Finneas Is Hopelessly in Love With Kate Hudson in ‘2001’ Music Video
Image
Finneas is a lovestruck actor playing an astronaut on the big screen, while haplessly in love with his director off-screen. Directed by Claudia Sulewski, the singer-songwriter stars in his new music video for “2001” alongside Kate Hudson.

The infectious, yearning track begins with a nod to Pink Floyd as Finneas sings: “Stuck waitin’ for you on the dark side of the moon/With an unbeatable view at a table for two.” The video echos the lyrics through its otherworldly theme, as the camera cuts between scenes of Finneas filming against a green screen,...

Kate Hudson Stars as An Intergalactic Director in Finneas’ ‘2001’ Music Video
Image
Kate Hudson is the star in the music video for Finneas’s “2001,” which the superproducer released on Wednesday.

The music video sees the Finneas play an actor pining for Hudson’s love and attention as he stars in her intergalactic film. Throughout the clips, Finneas sings the lyrics to the track while chasing after Hudson, who doesn’t pay him much mind.

“Honey, what you runnin’ from? / When you comin’ back to bed? / Toss and turn it all night long with me instead / Honey, what you runnin’ from? / Where the hell you headed to? / Do you like the way I run after you?” he sings throughout the song.

While Hudson starred in the music video as a director, “2001” was actually helmed by Finneas’ girlfriend, Claudia Sulewski, who was inspired by the 1968 film of the same name, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

“When I first started conceptualizing this music video, I knew...

‘For Worse’ Review: Amy Landecker’s Thoughtful and Deeply Feminine Debut Celebrates New Beginnings at Any Age
Image
In life, things have to get a lot worse before they can get a little better. In “For Worse,” the versatile and immensely watchable “Transparent” star Amy Landecker’s good-natured narrative feature debut as a writer and director, life gets considerably chaotic for Lauren, a sober and recently divorced West Coast mom trying to give a different direction to her life with her newfound freedom.

It used to be that characters like Lauren — usually defined by that somewhat cringe-inducing and overused “women above a certain age” phrase — were a rarity in cinema. But these days — especially considering several terrific recent releases of all sizes like “Suze,” “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” “The Idea of You” and even “Babygirl” — we don’t seem to be living in that same cinematic world anymore, one that refused to acknowledge the existence, realities and complex sexual desires of women, well, above a certain age.

Rebecca Black Delights & Thirst-Traps in ‘Salvation’ Music Video
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Rebecca Black is such a remarkable talent and a dazzling entertainer.

Unless you checked out after her 2011 viral video and the mindless hate that she received, that isn’t new.

What is new is Rebecca’s new hyper-pop track, “Salvation.”

The song is a joy. So, too, is the music video, which features Rebecca living out a nearly universal dream: becoming a young, hot, rich widow, possibly by dubious means.

On Thursday, February 27, the incomparable Rebecca Black unleashed “Salvation.”

Part of a very well received seven-song album by the same name, “Salvation” tells — lyrically — the story of someone whose passionate sexual escapades are receiving external judgment.

Whether the judgy party is homophobic or merely a generic prude is open to interpretation,...

Exclusive: James Morosini, the actor-filmmaker known for projects like I Love My Dad and It’s What’s Inside, has signed with CAA.

This fall, Morosini will be seen starring in Greg Jardin’s horror thriller It’s What’s Inside, which Netflix swooped on for $17M after a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival, as we first reported. Premiering on the streamer on October 4, the film watches as a group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires, and grudges.

Over the summer, Morosini was tapped by Lionsgate to direct Mommy’s Home, a psychological horror thriller for which he also penned the script, as we were first to tell you. Following a young dad whose family life becomes terrifyingly unhinged when his 24-year-old mom is unfrozen decades after being cryogenically preserved, the...

I Love My Dad review – masterful cringe-comedy is almost too painful to watch
Patton Oswalt
Patton Oswalt devises an ill-advised plan to win over his son in an inspired film that plumbs new depths of embarrassment

An excruciatingly heartfelt performance from Patton Oswalt carries this high-concept indie picture from writer-director James Morosini. It’s a film that genuinely does take the comedy of embarrassment to a new level. Morosini says that it’s based on a real incident in his own life; I can believe it. You couldn’t make it up. There is a stranger-than-fiction authenticity to the whole horrifying mess, in which Morosini cleverly uses real home-movie footage of his own childhood. The final 15 minutes have to be watched through your fingers.

Oswalt plays a well-meaning but weak and foolish guy called Chuck who has been a terrible husband (he’s now divorced) and a terrible deadbeat dad, having let his son down all his life. The son is twentysomething Franklin, played by Morosini,...

The Best Comedy Movies Of 2022, Ranked
Image
In recent years, the major Hollywood studios have been taking fewer chances on straight-up comedies, which is a bit of a bummer. The days of movies like "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Superbad," "Bridesmaids," and "The Hangover" making bank at the box office are behind us, and many comedies have been relegated to streaming services unless they happen to offer cross-genre laughs mixed with sci-fi, action, or horror. In fact, most of the highest-grossing comedies overall are animated movies geared toward the whole family. But many of the best comedies dabble in the naughtier side of humor and skew away from pleasing parents and their kids.

When it comes to 2022, many of the best comedies leaned toward adult laughs, but there are a few titles that managed to be quite clever without venturing into the realm of raunchier fare. Whether it's a boxy makeshift robot rebelling against his reclusive creator,...

Lil Rel Howery Interview: I Love My Dad Home Release
Image
Some parents will go to dangerous extremes to stay in their kids' lives, as seen in I Love My Dad. The film centers on an overbearing father who, in an attempt to reconnect with a son that's cut him out of his life, begins catfishing him on social media. Soon enough, his plan begins to backfire when his son wants to go on a road trip to meet the woman he thinks he's falling in love with.

Patton Oswalt and James Morosini, who also wrote and directed the film, lead the cast of I Love My Dad alongside Rachel Dratch, Claudia Sulewski, Lil Rel Howery, and Amy Landecker. Largely based on Morosini's own relationship with his father, the film is both a hilarious and cringeworthy look at the dangers that can come from unconditional love.

Patton Oswalt Interview: I Love My Dad Home Release
Image
Warning: This interview contains spoilers for the movie, I Love My Dad.Now available to watch on digital platforms, I Love My Dad is a cringe-comedy that will make viewers laugh and squirm in equal measure. The film could be interpreted as a crude take on the 1993 classic, Mrs. Doubtfire, but it undoubtedly targets a different audience. After being blocked on social media, Chuck creates a fake account to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin. Things take an uncomfortable, yet amusing turn when Franklin falls for the girl Chuck is pretending to be.

Rather than coming clean, Chuck seizes what he thinks is a bonding opportunity. However, it doesn't take long for the desperate father to realize that catfishing his son doesn't come without its complications. The main cast of the film includes Patton Oswalt, James Morosini, Claudia Sulewski, Lil Rel Howery, Amy Landecker, Ricky Velez, and Rachel Dratch.

How To Watch I Love My Dad At Home
Image
Have you ever catfished your own kid for love? As preposterous as the idea sounds, that's precisely at the heart of the Patton Oswalt film "I Love My Dad," which won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Award at this year's SXSW film festival.

Inspired by the real-life experience with writer/director/star James Morosini's own father, "I Love My Dad" sees Oswalt as a deadbeat dad named Chuck who has fallen out of touch with his son Franklin (Morosini) since divorcing his mother (Amy Landecker). Chuck's idea of "fatherhood" is building an empire of excuses, sad voicemails, and canceled plans, in addition to some phoned-in social media interactions. The situation is so grim, Franklin almost dies by suicide, but thankfully survives and is put in a rehabilitation center.

Upon release, Franklin feels empowered to set strict boundaries with his father, as the constant disappointment is at the core...

When I watch horror films, I always where a scarf. I wrap it around my neck tightly for comfort. As the time drags on, and the tension mounts through fright, I bring the scarf up further upon my face. To shield myself from the horrors, see, and to make sure I am not overcome from fright. If a horror film is truly exceptional, my face would be buried in garment, with only my eyes peaking from its refuge.

I speak about the scarf for I Love My Dad because I spent a lot of time hiding behind the fabric. For it may not be a horror, but it is no less horrifying.

Inspired by director, writer, and star James Morosini’s very true story, I Love My Dad revolves around Franklin, a young man who is struggling with his own mental health troubles. On the road to recovery, he blocks...

Then you'd have to do it a second time to try to find someone as kind, thoughtful and generous." I Love My Dad – Review
Image
One of the annoyances of social media is when your online friends inform you that you’ve been hacked (somebody claiming to be you) on the most popular ‘social network” website. So contacting your friend list or sending out a “blanket warning” is aggravating, but things could be much worse. Nighttime crime TV shows and daytime talk shows are filled with tales of “spoofed” profiles, often leading to money “scams” and sometimes even murder. And the movies have tackled it, most prominently in 2010 with Catfish which inspired an MTV docuseries a couple of years later and perhaps, added a new verb “catfishing”, creating a false identity to deceive someone online, into popular discussion, This week sees another feature film exploring that subject, but it’s not a documentary. Rather it’s a comedy that somehow is based on an actual incident that happened to the film’s star/writer/director.

‘I Love My Dad’ Star James Morosini on Making Out With Patton Oswalt: ‘He’s a Phenomenal Kisser’
Image
“I Love My Dad” director, writer and star James Morosini kiss and tells about how he prepared for his bizarre makeout scenes with co-star Patton Oswalt.

“We made out a lot ahead of time,” Morosini, who plays Oswalt’s son Franklin, told Variety jokingly at the premiere of “I Love My Dad” at the Largo at the Coronet on Thursday night. “He’s a phenomenal kisser. I hope everyone has the opportunity to make out with Patton Oswalt.”

Based on Morosini’s own true experience of being catfished by his dad, the new indie comedy stars Patton Oswalt as Chuck, a father who desperately tries to stay connected with his estranged son by posing as a woman online named Becca (Claudia Sulewski). During a scene where Franklin (Morosini) asks “Becca” if he can pretend to kiss her through their messages, Chuck pictures the disturbing scenario of his son actually making...

‘I Love My Dad’ Cast on Creating Cringe Comedy: “This Is Either Going to Be a Success or It’ll Be a Fiasco”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

On paper, the premise for I Love My Dad is not only ambitious but outright cringe. Inspired by a real experience from writer, director and star James Morosini, the film follows a desperate father (Patton Oswalt) who accidentally pulls off the catfish of the century, as he pretends to be someone else online in order to check in and be close to his estranged son Franklin (Morosini).

“I’m going to be honest with you, I didn’t know if this would work until I actually saw it in front of an audience,” Oswalt told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Thursday. “I liked watching it by myself, but it’s not until you get in front of a group of people and [can] listen to people. Yes, they laugh, but then also, [they] kind of grimace and cringe, and...

The Letterboxd Story: A Site For Film Lovers & Film Listers Giving Indie Distributors A Hand – Specialty Preview
Image
A New Zealand-based platform where fans track, review and share lists of movies old and new is an increasingly influential marketing tool for specialty film with budgets tight and audiences harder to reach.

Letterboxd, founded as a passion project by Auckland tech entrepreneurs Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow just over a decade ago, recently passed 6.5 million members, with 40-50 in North America followed by the U.K., Europe and breakout markets including Brazil, India, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It has 4.4 million monthly visitors and 800 million monthly page views.

Since launch, users have logged a whopping 1 billion films they’ve seen, put 300 million films on watchlists and posted 76.8 million reviews. Average time spent per visitor per month across web and app is about 40 minutes.

Letterboxd has been profitable since 2019, which is “source of immense pride,” Buchanan tells Deadline. The founders early on declined venture capital backing, he said, to...

‘I Love My Dad’ Film Review: Patton Oswalt Catfishing Saga Flirts With Comedy and Tragedy
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
If an episode of “Seinfeld” got struck by gamma radiation, hulked out and wandered into the world by its tragic, bizarre self, it might look a little like writer-director James Morosini’s “I Love My Dad.”

It’s a film about someone who, for perhaps sympathetic reasons, does an apocalyptically wrong thing and then can’t stop doing it. Because revealing you’re a liar is very hard, and living a horrible lie seems ever so slightly easier.

Patton Oswalt stars as Chuck, a divorced dad who, instead of being part of his son’s life, spends years making excuses for not showing up. We hear a lot of these excuses over the opening credits, but we don’t see the impact it has on his son, Franklin (Morosini), until just after the end of the titles, where we find Franklin in group therapy for people who have attempted to kill themselves.

How James Morosini Turned Being Catfished by His Father Into New Film ‘I Love My Dad’
Image
James Morosini really does love his dad, and he proves it when his father calls in the midst of our conversation. Morosini takes the call and explains he’s on an interview. “I’ll call you back,” the younger Morosini says before adding: “Love you.”

The complicated father-son relationship inspired Morosini’s acclaimed new film, “I Love My Dad,” which hits theaters this week and arrives on VOD Aug. 12 after winning both the grand jury prize and audience award at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. Patton Oswalt stars as Chuck, a man who is cut off by his son Franklin (played by Morosini) and creates a social media profile based on a waitress he knows, Becca (Claudia Sulewski.) Though Chuck is just trying to connect with Franklin, his son ends up falling hard for Becca – and Chuck goes to increasingly elaborate lengths to keep up the ruse.

Patton Oswalt Knew ‘I Love My Dad’ Could Have Been ‘a Fiasco’
Patton Oswalt
Patton Oswalt knew early on that his latest movie “I Love My Dad,” which involves him playing a father who inadvertently catfishes his estranged son, had the potential to not “just be a bad movie,” but to be “a fiasco.”

“We’re going to shoot for something, and it’s going to either completely work or… wow,” the comedian told TheWrap in a recent interview. “This movie had a script that had so many scenes in it that when I read them, I was like, how are they going to pull that [off]? This could go wrong in so many ways. I’ve never seen anything like this in a film that they’re attempting this.”

Fortunately for Oswalt and director and writer James Morosini, the cringey yet comedic film won the top prize at the SXSW Film Festival, where Oswalt got the chance to simply watch “people crawl out of their skin.

Oh, to have a boo — and to be in Paris. On Friday, Finneas dropped the phone-recorded music video for his new song “Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa,” an ode to his girlfriend Claudia Sulewski — and we’re going to admit it: we’re lowkey jealous of how cute these two are.

“She could be the Mona Lisa/If the Mona Lisa had a prettier face,” Finneas sings in the chorus. “This could be heaven/If heaven was an actual place.” The video follows the adorable couple as they take really cute...

Patton Oswalt Catfishes His Son in First Trailer for I Love My Dad
James Morosini
Written, directed, and led by James Morosini based on his own experiences, I Love My Dad was a cringe comedy hit at SXSW earlier this year and now it’s set to arrive in next month. Also starring Patton Oswalt, he plays a hopelessly estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin (Morosini), eventually leading him to an inadvertent catfishing adventure. Ahead of a release, the first trailer has now arrived.

John Fink said in his review, “Along the way I Love You Dad strikes a unique tone that is at times hilariously cringe-inducing, while also building some empathy for the psychopathic tendencies of Chuck. Franklin is played with extreme vulnerability by Morosini, who in the credits swears this is a true story his father doesn’t want you to know is a true story. Sulewski is radiant as the imaginary manic pixie dream girl tailor-made...

Patton Oswalt in Extra Awkward Comedy 'I Love My Dad' Full Trailer
I Love My Dad (2022)
"Keep your expectations low - she could be, like mean, or a scammer, or... your Dad?!?!" Magnolia has released the full-length main trailer for I Love My Dad, a totally nuts new comedy from filmmaker / actor James Morosini. This premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, where it won both the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award. The concept alone is hilarious, but seeing how far they take it in this trailer is what makes it a winner. Or a loser...? Based on an actual true story. After Franklin blocks his father Chuck on social media, Chuck "catfishes" his son by pretending to be a girl named Becca online. He then agrees to drive Franklin to Maine to meet Becca, knowing that it might be the last straw in their father-son relationship. Starring Patton Oswalt, James Morosini, Claudia Sulewski, with Lil Rel Howery and Amy Landecker. This is such a cheesy trailer,...

‘I Love My Dad’ Trailer: Patton Oswalt Catfishes His Son in Deeply Uncomfortable Comedy
Image
Well, this is a doozy of a take on “How I Met Your Father.”

SXSW Grand Jury Prize winner “I Love My Dad” stars Patton Oswalt as Chuck, a desperate father looking to reconnect with his estranged son Franklin, played by writer/director James Morosini. Chuck impersonates a waitress (Claudia Sulewski) online to strike up a relationship with a depressive Franklin, who has blocked Chuck on all forms of social media. The only issue? Well, Franklin metaphorically swiped right on Chuck’s alter ego.

Per an official synopsis, “Things begin to spiral when Franklin falls for this imaginary girl and wants nothing more than to meet her in person, as Chuck has inadvertently catfished his own son.”

“The Sex Lives of College Girls” and “American Horror Story” alum Morosini wrote the screenplay based on his own real family experience.

Rachel Dratch, Lil Rel Howry, and Amy Landecker also star in the dramedy,...

I Love My Dad (2022)
Patton Oswalt Catfishes His Son in Trailer for SXSW Winner ‘I Love My Dad’ (Video)
I Love My Dad (2022)
The cringiest comedy of the year may be “I Love My Dad,” a film in which Patton Oswalt plays an estranged dad who catfishes his own son in order to desperately reconnect with him. And stranger yet is the fact that the story is based on something that really happened to the film’s writer, director and star.

“I Love My Dad” was written, directed and stars James Morosini, who in the film plays Franklin, a 20-something coping with his own mental health who takes the step of blocking his father’s contact after years of being absent and broken promises.

But his father Chuck (Oswalt) still has good intentions and comes up with the idea to impersonate a waitress online in order to stay in touch, only to inadvertently start a romantic online relationship with him.
