CNN president Jeff Zucker, who helped the news outlet become the dominant name in cable news, intends to leave the media organization at the end of the year.

“This organization has been through a lot. I’d like to be here to get us all back to a new normal, one that feels much more like it once did around here,” Zucker said in a Thursday call with CNN producers that was obtained by Variety. “So, as a result, I am going to stay and finish my current contract — which, as I said, will keep me here until the end of this year. President Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate today after a five-month impeachment process.

The acquittal on both articles of impeachment was not a surprise, as few expected enough Republicans to break ranks and reach the 67 vote threshold needed to convict and remove Trump from office.

But still it was dramatic and historic, covered across broadcast and cable networks. This was the third time in American history that a president has been impeached — and the third time that there has been an acquittal after a Senate trial.

The vote on Article I, for abuse of power, was 52-48 to acquit, and it was 53-47 on Article II, for obstruction of Congress.

One element of suspense was whether any senators would cross party lines. Just hours before the vote, Mitt Romney gave a speech on the Senate floor in which he said that he would vote to remove Trump from office.

When the House Intelligence Committee launches its first public hearing of the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump on Wednesday, it’s likely that the first hours might matter more than anything else.

Throughout the day, the hearings will draw across-the-board coverage on broadcast networks, streaming platforms and cable news channels, not to mention the river of comments and clips that will proliferate on Twitter and Facebook.

During a recent trip north to Santa Barbara, I escaped the rain in a used bookstore and struck up a conversation about America with the clerk. Paul Manafort was found guilty Tuesday on eight of 18 counts in his financial fraud trial, with a mistrial declared on ten other counts.

Manafort, former manager of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, was convicted on one count of failure to disclose a foreign bank account, two counts of bank fraud, and five counts of tax fraud.

He will begin a second criminal trial in Washington, D.C. in September on charges that include obstruction of justice, failure to register as a foreign agent and money laundering.

“Mr. Manafort is disappointed of not getting acquittals all the way through, or a complete hung jury on all counts,” Manafort’s attorney said in a press statement shortly after the verdict was delivered. “However, he would like to thank Judge Eillis for granting him a fair trial, and thank the jury for their very long hard fought deliberations.”

One year after the gathering of Nazi sympathizers and white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., left civil rights activist Heather Heyer dead, Clarke appeared on Showtime’s “Who Is America?” and didn’t condemn fascism. But he did condemn anti-fascists.

Sacha Baron Cohen asked David Clarke to run down the trouble with anti-fascist protesters on “Who Is America,” and agreed with the former Alabama sheriff that “you don’t want to take sides” when talking about Germany in the 1930s.

Clarke joined Baron Cohen during a segment in which the comedian played his character OMGWhizzboyOMG, a viral YouTube star from Denmark who does “unboxing” videos of toys called Shopkins. The video setup is clearly aimed at children, but the gag is that the right-leaning Whizzboy talks about “issues” with guests while opening toys.

“Let’s talk bout the dangerous people who marched in Charlottesville, or as they’re called, Antifa,” Baron Cohen’s Whizzboy said to Clarke as the segment begain. “What are they like?”

Now in its fifth episode, Sacha Baron Cohen continues his crusade to dupe unsuspecting victims on his Showtime series Who Is America? This week’s episode didn’t include the much-anticipated interview with Sarah Palin, but it did feature interviews with former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, former Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, and pro-gun advocate Dan Roberts.

Cohen donned his pro-Trump conspiracy theorist Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr. PhD persona to chat with Lewandowski and opened a whole can of worms when it came to Trump’s stance on race.
