Interestingly, Abhishek Bachchan’s film, directed by Remo D’Souza, opened better in its debut week despite mixed responses compared to Boman Irani’s film, which earned rave reviews.

This seems to be the week of honourable but adventurous remakes. While Advait Chandan’s Loveyapa is that slurpy healthy fast food that doesn’t trivialize the palate of the original, Mrs, directed by debutante Aarti Kadav, cracks the adaptive code without any mishap.

Ms Kadav has Sanya Malhotra’s stout support from first to last frame, just as director Jeo Baby had Nimisha Sajan in the original Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen.

This may sound shocking to the purists. But I actually “enjoyed” Mrs more than The Great Indian Kitchen, which is not to say that the original was a lesser film. It was probably a much more accomplished work. But heck, Mrs is just so much more immersive. Part of it comes from Malhotra, who captures the horror of a newly married woman trapped in the kitchen with a seamless spontaneity.

Baby John has sold 93K tickets via advance booking for the opening day. The figures should have ideally been better, given the pre-release buzz was favorable. The Australian Centre for Indian Cinema is set to launch the National Indian Film Festival of Australia (Niffa) across seven cities from Feb. 13-16, 2025, marking the country’s first nationwide celebration of Indian cinema.

The festival has secured partnerships with exhibitor Dendy Cinemas, Indian media giant Ndtv, and cinema advertising firm Val Morgan. Filmmaker Anupam Sharma will head the initiative, with industry veteran Peter Castaldi serving as festival director.

Niffa will host screenings in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Darwin, and Hobart.
