Duane Davis, a former gang member known as Keffe D, was indicted on one count of murder with a deadly weapon by a Nevada grand jury Friday.

The victim: Tupac Shakur.

It’s a case that has made national headlines since 1996 when it took place and has been the subject of a multitude of documentaries and scripted projects.

Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes, one-time friend and one-time foe of Tupac’s, was the most high-profile recent series, having premiered in April. The series focuses on Tupac’s relationship with his mother Afeni, a Black Panther activist, rather than his death.

Hughes told Deadline that today was a “great day for the family.”

He revealed that when he was pitching the project around Hollywood, he had a different subtitle: This Is Not A Murder Investigation.

Just days after what would have been Tupac Shakur’s 52nd birthday, police have announced they issued a search warrant at a home in Henderson, Nevada, a city that sits under 20 miles outside of Las Vegas, where the rapper was gunned down in 1996.

According to Lt. Jason Johansson of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “The search warrant that we conducted is in connection with the Tupac Shakur case…It has been a while…It’s a case that’s gone unsolved and hopefully one day we can change that.” As per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the scene of the warrant appeared to be a tense one, with officers approaching the home with guns drawn. “There was a lot of information that was spilled in Unsolved that hasn’t been touched on,” Wavyy Jonez says of Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. in our latest installment of Next Generation TV. “You’ll get closure,” adds Marcc Rose of tonight’s finale of the USA Network series, on which he plays Tupac Shakur to Jonez’s Biggie. “And you have a few final testimonies,” he adds of the limited series that co-stars Jimmi Simpson, Bokeem Woodbine and Josh Duhamel.

Tonight, Season 1 of USA Network’s scripted true crime series “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” will end with an episode titled “Unsolved?” That sounds about right for creator Kyle Long, who believes it is actually pretty obvious what happened here. At least in the case of the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.

“I would say, in regards to the Tupac murder, I think it’s — you know — very clear what happened,” Long told TheWrap in an interview last week. “There’s elements of it that are questionable, but certainly Keffe D and the Southside Crips killed Tupac Shakur. And it is outrageous that Keffe D is not in jail. And that should be in the article.”

“In the [‘Unsolved’] finale, when you see why the whole Keffe D thing, how he had immunity and that — long story short, in real life and in the television show, he had immunity to make this confession to the task force,” Long said of the Southside Crips member and the late Orlando Anderson’s uncle, real name Duane Keith Davis. “When the task force fell apart he still had immunity.”

“But this guy, this year — no one is talking about this, but I guess people just don’t care about Tupac Shakur, a young black man — he, this guy goes on a documentary this year and tells a version of the same story, he tries to go all cute and say, ‘I don’t know who triggered there,'” Long said. “But he talked about being in the car with the Crips, they specifically went to hunt [Tupac] down and then Tupac gets shot, you just have to say who pulled the trigger.”

However, Long says it ultimately “doesn’t matter that he doesn’t say who pulled the trigger.”

“He went live on television and confessed to being an accessory to murder and the Las Vegas Pd, as far as I know, is doing nothing about it,” Long continued. “And I just think it’s outrageous. I just don’t understand it. It makes me upset. And it’s just crazy town to me. It is so wild that a guy can — and I don’t know what kind of lawyer he has telling him to go on this television show and talk about it, but you know, it’s crazy. So that’s my rant about Keffe D and the Tupac murder, like to me, that murder, you could go arrest someone for that right now.”

Long is referencing an episode of Bet’s “Death Row Chronicles” docuseries which aired in February and featured interviews with Davis and former Lapd detective Greg Kading about Shakur’s murder.

Kading, who wrote the book “Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations,” is one of the key characters in the show “Unsolved” (played by Josh Duhamel), as he led investigations into the murders of Shakur and Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls. He is also a co-executive producer on the USA series.

Multiple attempts by TheWrap to reach Davis for comment for this story were unsuccessful. All phone calls made to numbers associated with Davis went unreturned or led to disconnected lines. Emails sent to addresses associated with Davis and his relatives went unanswered. Both Bet and NBCUniversal did not have current contact information for Davis. Attempts to locate contact information for Davis through arrest records and to reach Wayne Higgins — an attorney who is listed in court documents as having previously represented Davis — were also unsuccessful.

For a show called (branded, really) “Unsolved,” the first season certainly drives toward a definitive ending. The new USA anthology series serves as a detailed, time-jumping, and exploratory journey into multiple, years-long investigations, but it isn’t a nuanced take on the criminal justice system (or nuanced at all, for that matter). Nor is “Unsolved” a human story meant to honor the victims or the men seeking justice for their deaths. It plays out like a mystery, and by the end of the seventh episode (out of 10 total), “The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” takes a stand behind one theory.

There have been a lot of shows featuring the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Most of them have been documentaries, and none of them have had the time devoted to them that Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. allows.

While I am a fan of true crime, I'm not a fan of rap music and found the history between the two men so complex it wasn't something I ever took the time to understand.

After watching the first seven hours of this impressive USA limited series, that's going to change.

If I knew little of the lives of Tupac and Biggie going into the series, I knew even less of what to expect of the production based on a book by Greg Kading, who is also one of the lead characters played by Josh Duhamel.

Four weeks ago, we brought you the news that Josh Duhamel (Transformers: The Last Knight), Bokeem Woodbine (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Westworld‘s Jimmi Simpson had all signed on, and now, Deadline is reporting that the network has added another three: Luke James, Aisha Hinds and Letoya Luckett (Ballers).

This is like a dream ... Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac co-starring on a TV show.  The actors playing the rap giants were on set this week in L.A. for the first day of taping "Unsolved" -- a USA Network show about the investigations into both their deaths. Newcomer Wavyy Jonez is playing Big and Marcc Rose is Pac ... same role he played in "Straight Outta Compton." Well timed by producers, with Thursday being the 20th...

USA has come up with a show, similar to Making a Murderer or American Crime Story: The People V. Oj Simpson, where they will explore unexplained deaths; a scripted true crime series. Unsolved, at least in the first season, will focus on the deaths of the great Tupac and Biggie Smalls. This hits home to me as I was affected by Tupac's death immensely. I never listened to Biggie until years later, and at that point I realized how tragic of a loss these two performers were.

It is still unclear who actually committed the murders of these two individuals, even though we Know -- we have no proof, and USA intends on exploring this.

Who will actually portray these roles is the big question that was answered today.

Marcc Rose will reprise the role he played as Tupac in Straight Outta Compton, and what a great pick this is.

USA has found its Biggie and Tupac: Wavvy Jonez and Marcc Rose have been cast as Christopher Wallace (aka Biggie Smalls aka the Notorious B.I.G.) and Tupac Shakur in the USA Network pilot “Unsolved: The Murders of Biggie and Tupac.”

Both are relative unknowns who bear a resemblance to the late hip-hop superstars they will portray.

Rose previously played Shakur in the Universal feature “Straight Outta Compton,” while this is the first acting role for Jonez.

Jonez, a rapper who recently released the mixtape “R.E.D. D.O.P.E.” (Real Everyday Drama Doing Over People’s Expectation), was found during a nationwide open casting call and chosen via video audition out of hundreds of entries.

It’s now been 20 years since Shakur and Wallace were both killed within six months of each other,...

After a long time in development and a lot of uncertainty, the Tupac Shakur biopic is finally coming to theaters. Morgan Creek Entertainment recently closed a deal with Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment, who are now going to be releasing All Eyez On me. As exciting as that is, even more exciting for fans of the late rapper is that the movie is coming out this summer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, All Eyez On Me is set to for release on June 16, which puts it right in the heart of the summer movie season. What makes that date even more interesting is that it will mark what would have been Tupac's 46th birthday. Morgan Creek's languishing Untitled Tupac Shakur Project has been given a new lease on life, with the studio hoping to get production started this year. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Benny Boom (Next Day Air) is in talks to direct, replacing Carl Franklin, who was attached to direct this summer. If principal photography doesn't start by the end of this year, Morgan Creek will lose Tupac Shakur's music rights, which will revert back to his mother, Afeni Shakur.

The production company has tried to get this Tupac biopic off the ground for several years, with Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer) set to direct back in 2011, then John Singleton coming aboard in February 2014. Welcome to Death Row, L. Leigh Savidge’s book and acclaimed documentary, could go on to become the sequel to box office sleeper hit Straight Outta Compton, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Savidge, who served as producer on the hit biopic about famed rap group N.W.A., is just one of the concepts currently being shopped around for the inevitable follow-up, with last week bringing word that Daz Dillinger was pushing ahead with a sequel to the breakout hit despite Universal denying that any progress has been made. Under the moniker Dogg Pound 4 Life, the sequel would carry on where we left off with Straight Outta Compton, picking up the story strands revolving around the likes of Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Suge Knigh.

After spending its first two weekends atop the box office charts, Universal Pictures has another certifiable hit on their hands with Straight Outta Compton. The N.W.A biopic has taken in over $111 million so far, and many fans are wondering if the studio has any plans for a sequel. Over the weekend, TMZ reported that a follow-up is in the works, which will feature Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and other West Coast rappers. But Entertainment Weekly says Universal Pictures isn't admitting to any current plans for a Straight Outta Compton sequel, with the following statement.

"At this time there are no plans for a Straight Outta Compton sequel."

As a lifelong fan of N.W.A., I walked into Straight Outta Compton expecting something of a sanitized story of the gangsta rap group comprised of '80s West Coast rap pioneers Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-e, Mc Ren and DJ Yella. One fear had to do with the fact Cube and Dre were producing the film while Eazy, the troubled group's frontman, passed away in 1995. Ren and Yella are onboard as "N.W.A. advisors" and Cube's son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., actually stars as his father in the movie. Given the circumstances it was hard to expect an entirely unbiased look at the lives these guys led, growing up in Compton, Calif. exploring the struggles they faced, the mistakes they made, the success they found, the discrimination, the infighting, the breakups, etc. Taking that into consideration, things are as they would be expected, the end result is a mixed bag.

I may not be a fan of today’s current hip-hop scene, but this reviewer has a soft spot for early gangsta rap. From Krs-One’s “Sound Of Da Police” to most of Snoop’s catalog, each song represents a cultural look into a world my safely-suburban-ass knows absolutely nothing about. The grooves are tight, the messages are blunt (the ghetto’s punk rock, if you will), and the performers are Real people (no frontin’), but someone had to first test the waters of society with such aggressive musical tastes. Those thuggish soldiers were known as N.W.A., a Compton “supergroup” who assaulted America with a bullish brand of street-wise entertainment that made them public enemy number one in conservative eyes – and smoldering stars to the rest of us.

Straight Outta Compton is no normal biopic though – it’s a revolution. It’s a statement in a time of social disconnect.
