The Mummy Is Ready to Twist What We Know About the Universal Monsters With Its Big Comeback
Image
The Universal Monsters are back in comics in full force, thanks to Skybound Entertainment, and the publisher’s next entry takes readers back to ancient Egypt with The Mummy. The latest in a line that has included new Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein miniseries, Skybound’s latest monster title focuses on Prince Imhotep, taking a look at the famous story from an entirely new perspective.

First shared by Skybound on Instagram, the preview for The Mummy #1 – written and illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks – makes it clear that the story takes place concurrently with the original 1932 film, this time told from the perspective of Helen Grosvenor.

View this post on InstagramA post shared by Skybound Entertainment (@skyboundent)

Played by Zita Johann in The Mummy, Grosvenor was a British/Egyptian woman who found herself embroiled in a centuries-old love story, as the revived Prince Imhotep became convinced she...

The Mummy Walks Again In Skybound's Next Universal Horror Comic Revival [Exclusive]
Image
/Film can confirm that "Universal Monsters: The Mummy" — a reimagining of 1932's "The Mummy" starring Boris Karloff — is rising up and shambling into comic shops next year.

This new mini-series is the fourth and latest horror comic partnership between Skybound Entertainment & Image Comics and Universal Products and Experiences. Since 2023, Skybound has been publishing a "Universal Monsters" thematic series that lets horror comic superstars reimagine the Universal Monsters across four issue mini-series. In keeping with the branding, the stories and monsters are styled specifically after the original 1930s Universal Horror iterations.

The first Skybound "Universal Monsters" comic was "Dracula" by writer James Tynion IV and artist Martin Simmonds. Next was "The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives" by Dan Watters, Ram V, and artist Matthew Roberts." "Frankenstein" (written and drawn by Michael Walsh) wrapped up this past November and so "The Mummy" is the logical next choice.

Captain America's New Era Officially Begins, As Marvel Celebrates Sam Wilson with Ultimate Tribute to the Hero's Most Iconic Moments
Image
As Captain America: Brave New World soon approaches theaters, Marvel Comics has debuted a new line of variant covers that celebrate Sam Wilsons Captain America while paying homage to Steve Rogers before him. Starting next January, Marvel is releasing five unique variant covers, each calling back to an iconic Captain America comic, until the films release next February. These classic covers are sure to impress Cap fans, new and old.

Starting with Avengers #22, Marvel salutes over sixty years of Rogerss tenure as Captain America while embracing Sam Wilsons ownership of the title. Wilson has been Captain America for nearly a decade but still finds himself having to prove his worthiness of the title.

Whether it be by skeptics both on and off the page, Wilson has continuously been held to a high standard that anyone wearing the Stars and Stripes should be held to, albeit with more scrutiny than Rogers ever faced.

David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
10 Weirdest Comic Book Crossovers of All Time
David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
Since the Golden Age, the comic book industry has thrived on weird and creative ideas, which can be found in classic series like Superman and Green Lantern. One of the best places to see the industry's strangest and wackiest ideas is through team-ups and crossovers. The best of these combine completely unrelated or seemingly-mismatched universes, having heroes team up with characters who couldn't be more different -- and sending them on equally bizarre adventures.

Comic book crossovers offer readers the chance to see some of their favorite characters and properties interact, sometimes even seeing them fight. These stories can answer classic comic fan questions like who would win in a grudge match, which character is more powerful or whether some heroes would actually work better in another world. With creators turning in some excellent and strange scripts to make these team-ups great, these stories stand out as some of the best gems in print.

Clint Eastwood and Melora Hardin in Les pleins pouvoirs (1997)
The six best new comic books of the week (August 28)
Clint Eastwood and Melora Hardin in Les pleins pouvoirs (1997)
It's the final new comic book week of the month and sometimes companies save the best for last. It appears to be the case with this week’s new releases.

You’ll see more changes in Absolute Power after learning about Amanda Waller’s first outing with Task Force X. Both X-Men comic books on this list are crucial if you’re following From the Ashes or a fan of mutants. There’s also more going on in Skybound/Image Comics Energon Universe during a very emotional issue of Void Rivals.

Normally, this list is only five comics. But this week was too heavy with good issues not to add an extra one. Let’s get right to it with the best comic book of the week.

Something is Killing the Children #40Writer: James Tynion IVArtist: Werther Dell’Edera

No one creates emotionally brutal moments like James Tynion IV. This issue...

For Paterson’s husband and writing partner, Marshall, the project has taken on particular resonance of late, having just been diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer.

Translated into 50 languages, with over 16 million copies sold, Frankl’s riveting account of his time in the Nazi concentration camps, and his exploration of the human will to find meaning in spite of unspeakable adversity, has offered solace and guidance to generations of readers since it was first published in 1946. At the heart of his work is the conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but rather the pursuit of meaning.

Creepshow: Joe Hill’s Wolverton Station comic book coming in March
Image
Being one of Stephen King‘s children, author Joe Hill has a connection to the Creepshow franchise that goes back to its very beginning – in fact, Hill was in the original, classic 1982 film (watch it Here) that was written by King and directed by George A. Romero. He’s the kid in the wraparound segments. Decades later, Hill’s stories By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain, Twittering from the Circus of the Dead, and Mums were brought to the screen in episodes of the Creepshow TV series on the Shudder streaming service. And now another one of his stories, Wolverton Station, is getting the Creepshow comic book treatment. The one shot comic book Creepshow: Joe Hill’s Wolverton Station is set to reach store shelves (and digital stores) on Wednesday, March 27th.

Comics Beat reports that Hill teamed up with Jason Ciaramella (C is for Cthulu) and Michael Walsh...

First Ever ‘Hometown Haunts & Hops’ Brings a Horror Convention to a Brewery [Event Report]
Image
From its autumnal aesthetic to its haunted history, Massachusetts is always a great place to spend the Halloween season, but horror fans were particularly spoiled this year. In addition to the usual festivities in Salem and repertory programming at Boston theaters, we had no less than four horror conventions throughout the state in the span of two months: Silver Scream Con, Terror Con, MonstahXpo, and Hometown Haunts & Hops.

Many convention memories are made in hotel bars, so why not set one in a brewery? The inaugural Hometown Haunts & Hops took place at Mayflower Brewing in Plymouth on October 28, providing a fun environment on the unseasonably warm Saturday before Halloween. Curated by America’s Hometown Horror podcast and Inebri-Art, both based in Plymouth, the event is poised to become an annual occurrence.

Lively but low-key, Hometown Haunts & Hops is a refreshingly intimate alternative to the often overwhelming convention experience. There were no shortage of activities,...
