The 1990s were notorious for Hollywood studios releasing movies about the same thing around the same time: "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp," "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," and "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" are among the most high-profile examples. Before all that, the decade kicked off with one of the strangest double-ups based on the memoirs of Henry Hill, the real-life New York gangster who ended up in the Witness Protection Program after testifying against his old Mafia buddies. One movie was Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas," and the other was a sequel of sorts, though it hit theaters first: Herbert Ross' fish-out-of-water comedy "My Blue Heaven."
Remarkably, both films stemmed from the same source.

Happy September, fellow autumn lovers! We’re just a few weeks away from the end of summer, but the trappings of fall have already arrived for some. That means cool temperatures, sweaters, Halloween decorations in stores, and of course, football, football, and more football.
There’ll be a heavy presence of football on this week’s list of new shows and movies to watch this week, but we’ll also have plenty of TV shows and movies to offer viewers who don’t care about the gridiron.

Some landmarks you can find on a map. Others you have to feel in the bass. For decades, Magic City has been the latter, an Atlanta institution whose reputation precedes it like the roar of a V8 on Forsyth Street. The new Starz docuseries, Magic City: An American Fantasy, pulls back the velvet curtain on this legendary strip club, chronicling its nearly 40-year reign.
The series argues that this was never just a club; it was a cultural engine room for hip-hop, a clubhouse for sports royalty, and an unlikely political stage. At its center is the founder, Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney, the shrewd architect of a world built on flesh, fantasy, and the almighty dollar. The series promises a look at the grit beneath the glitter, a story inseparable from Atlanta itself.

Kurt Cobain wasn’t exactly known to shy away from dark subject matter in his songwriting. There was the one about the real-life abduction and torture of a teenage girl, the one about abortifacient tea, and oh, the one literally called “Rape Me.” He also liked to invoke wholesome elements of pop culture, like Teen Spirit deodorant, to juxtapose against those uglier topics. In that respect, it’s not as weird as it sounds that Nirvana recorded a song about being sexually assaulted, tortured and killed by characters from The Andy Griffith Show, but it does sound pretty freaking weird.
“Floyd the Barber” is the second song on Nirvana’s first album, Bleach, which was released in 1989, well before their early ‘90s breakthrough into the mainstream and anyone would care about their musical desecration of the residents of Mayberry. The song begins with the narrator entering Floyd’s barber shop,...

Atlanta holds a distinct place in the American cultural landscape. Beginning in the 1970s, it became a hub for the Black elite, and has only grown since then. Within Atlanta’s confines, Magic City, one of the most popular strip clubs in the country, has a distinct legacy touching several aspects of Black culture and music. Created by Cole Brown and executive produced by Brown, Aubrey “Drake” Graham and Jermaine Dupri, Starz’s new series, “Magic City: An American Fantasy,” chronicles the origins of the Black Studio 54 and its iconic rise. Fascinating and robust, “Magic City” allows audiences to go behind the veil surrounding the establishment, showcasing its history and lore from all angles.

A little over a decade ago, How I Met Your Mother concluded its run on the screens, and boy, was it a controversial ending. After that long and winding story that Josh Radnor’s Ted tells his kids about how he met their mother, the finale saw him ending up with Robin instead, after her divorce from Barney.
Yet, at least Barney’s (played by Neil Patrick Harris) ending left a smile on our faces. Well, yes, he does revert to his initial playboy ways after his divorce. But then one of his one-night stands results in a child, leading to the birth of his daughter, Ellie. This new turn in his life really changes him as Barney finds a new purpose in fatherhood.
In a way, the show implied that he is genuinely committed to being a good father, which does make for a heartwarming ending for him. X...

Amazon Prime’s spy thriller series, Butterfly, is adapted from Boom! Studios’ graphic novel of the same name, written by Arash Amel with Marguerite Bennett in art. As is the case with any comic-book adaptations, the series takes some major creative liberties. This results in deviation from not only the narrative standpoint but also in the thematic aspects as well. While some of those changes work well in the context of the message the series wants to convey, there are also some aspects that are done better in the source material. Let’s take a brief look at the major difference between the series and graphic novel to assess both. It should be mentioned that a discussion about source material will contain spoilers not only for this season; there might be major revelations about the future of the series as well.

Jeremy Renner has reached a fresh accord with Marvel Studios to step back into Clint Barton’s boots for Hawkeye season 2, with cameras aiming for a fall 2025 start and a Disney+ launch pencilled for late 2026 or early 2027. Sources close to the talks say the new contract restores the actor’s first‑season salary after a half‑pay offer halted negotiations earlier this year.
Renner acknowledged the breakthrough during recent press duties, saying he is “physically ready” to draw the bow again following his 2023 snow‑plough accident and months of rehab. He added that fans deserve closure on Barton’s partnership with Kate Bishop, a sentiment that helped push both sides back to the table after he publicly called the earlier proposal an “insult offer” in May.
Plot whispers point to a six‑episode run inspired by The Raid, with Barton and Bishop battling Clint’s brother Barney, alias Trickshot, inside a single high‑rise setting.

Hawkeye season 2 just got a very surprising update from Marvel Cinematic Universe star Jeremy Renner. As MCU TV shows have been a crucial component of The Multiverse Saga, only a handful of projects have been able to score season renewals, while others have served as limited series. While the Phase 4 series left the door open for both Renner's Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop to continue, only the latter has been seen since Hawkeye's ending, appearing in The Marvels' mid-credits scene.
In a new interview with Empire, Renner, who had previously spoken about the MCU pay dispute that was preventing him from agreeing to do Hawkeye season 2, dropped a new update about the show potentially continuing. Feeling confident in the way his health has bounced back since his December 2023 snowplow accident, the star feels "my body's getting ready for something" like an MCU return. Renner stated...

In the year of our lord 2025, it isn't exactly news to say that some people find elements of the hit sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" (Himym) to be somewhat problematic. From Barney Stinson's (Neil Patrick Harris) frequent manipulation and sexual exploitation of innocent young women to the culture's reanalysis of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as a "nice guy" who is secretly a conceited jerk, there are plenty of holes you can poke into the beloved sitcom. Still, plenty of fans will happily revisit all nine seasons of the long-running CBS staple, especially with the introduction of "How We Made Your Mother," the rewatch podcast hosted by Radnor and series co-creator Craig Thomas.
There's plenty of room to be critical about the shows you love, but folks often take potshots at Himym that you can take at just about every sitcom that has ever aired on television. Try revisiting outdated...

To escape the aging problem of its cast members, Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie, the creators of How I Met Your Mother, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, shot all of their scenes in Season 2 itself. In an interview with TV Gal, Thomas commented on this decision, saying:
At the beginning of year two we realized these kids were aging. We knew what their piece of the puzzle at the very end game of the show would be and we knew we had to grab it and we did.
This may have been a long shot that was taken by the showrunners, as even one link left untethered would’ve brought all of it crashing down. Thankfully, the long-term storytelling paid off for them in the end.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “And Just Like That” Season 3, Episode 9.
“And Just Like That” just gave viewers a breakup that seemed inevitable, but is it really the end for this “Sex and the City” couple?
Episode 9, titled “Present Tense,” followed as Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett) dealt with lingering trust issues in their relationship which, after a season’s worth of compromises, finally pushed Carrie to call it quits. Her working relationship with Duncan (Jonathan Cake) had been making Aidan uncomfortable for some time now, but this week’s late notetaking session between him and Carrie led to the final argument.
Stuck in the past
Early in the episode, Carrie was surprised to find that Aidan and her neighbor were hanging out. The hangout made her uncomfortable since she had asked Aidan to stay away, assuring him that there was only a professional connection between the two authors.

In How I Met Your Mother, Barney Stinson had three true loves: suits, women, and Star Wars. The show played his obsession for laughs – especially when he judged potential partners based on whether they loved The Empire Strikes Back – but the writers weren’t just creating a quirky character trait.
For starters, Neil Patrick Harris himself is a massive fan of the galaxy far, far away, and the showrunners made that detail canon. Harris, famously a fan of all things Disney, even created epic Star Wars Halloween costumes for his family the year after Himym went off the air.
As for his on-screen character, under the surface of his cartoonish womanizing and Rulebook logic, Barney was a guy looking for connection. What better mirror than Star Wars, with its ongoing themes of family, destiny, and redemption?

When How I Met Your Mother aired in 2005, no one could have predicted that it would run for 9 seasons and become a cultural touchstone. One of them was star Neil Patrick Harris, who portrayed the womanizer Barney Stinson in the show. In a 2022 interview, he admitted that he thought the show wouldn’t move past the pilot. Harris’s skepticism was due to one thing- the long, mouthy title.
Today, How I Met Your Mother is now known for its heartfelt moments, quirky but relatable characters, and an intriguing narrative structure. More than that, its title has become iconic in itself. After all, in a world where popular shows have titles with two or three words like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, etc., here was a show that didn’t mystify what it was about. But why exactly did Neil Patrick Harris think the show wouldn’t work?

Barney Stinson has become a beloved character in pop culture. Mainly because of Neil Patrick Harris' portrayal of the character. But the staple of How I Met Your Motherhad some pretty surprising influences. One being that of a beloved franchise. Throughout the run of the show, Barney and Ted (Josh Radnor) would talk about nerdy things and Barney's theory on girls who love Star Wars: Return of the Jediwas probably based on the fact that Barney himself has a connection to Darth Vader. On a new episode of the podcast How We Made Your Mother, co-creator Craig Thomas and episode writer Chris Harris broke down Season 1, Episode 15, titled “Game Night,” and how Barney was inspired by Darth Vader.

Mayberry, North Carolina was full of colorful characters. Aside from the core four of Sheriff Andy Taylor, his son Opie, his Aunt Bee and his deputy Barney Fife, viewers were charmed by the antics of absentminded Floyd the Barber, local idiots Gomer and Goober and Otis Campbell, whose primary personality trait was being drunk.

Anxiety has always existed on television. It just didn’t always go by that name. In the early days of TV, anxious characters were often exaggerated for laughs: the nosy neighbor, the twitchy sidekick, the boss who cracked under pressure.
We didn’t talk about mental health in those terms yet, so their panic and insecurity were written off as quirks, cowardice, or comic relief. But whether we were laughing with them or at them, those characters reflected something real.
As TV storytelling evolved, so did its portrayal of anxiety. What was once played for laughs is now handled with empathy, nuance, and in many cases, remarkable honesty. From slapstick sitcoms to prestige dramas, characters with anxiety are no longer caricatures. They’re us.

Back when TV was all about the laugh track, anxiety didn’t come with a diagnosis.

If you're anything like me, you can't watch a TV show without wondering how much money the main characters are making. This question is naturally followed by wondering how much their apartment costs, how much their parents must be funding their lifestyles, and whether any of this is realistic at all, especially with shows taking place in New York City or Los Angeles.
Of all the major sitcoms of the past 30 years, "How I Met Your Mother" might be one of the least realistic. At least "Friends" explained that Monica's luxurious apartment was rent-controlled and illegally sublet from her grandmother, but "Himym" never explains how Ted and Marshall (the latter of whom is still a student for the first two seasons) can afford that beautiful Upper West Side apartment. Combine this with the silliness of Barney's career (he makes "16 craploads" a year doing basically nothing) and Robin's teen popstar background,...

Every career has to start somewhere, but it's hard to imagine anyone ending up with a truly brilliant career when their first film appearance was in the truly terrible 2000 comedy prequel "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas." Somehow, Brian Levant's critically panned 1994 film adaptation of the 1960s animated series "The Flintstones" was a box office hit for Universal, and it ended up making a prequel that came out six years later. Not only was it an unwanted, bizarre film, but it didn't even have the stars from the original, as apparently John Goodman, who played Fred Flintstone, begged producer Stephen Spielberg to keep him out of any future "Flintstones" films.
Starring Mark Addy as Fred Flintstone and Stephen Baldwin as Barney Rubble (replacing Rick Moranis), "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas" tells the story of Fred and Barney meeting and falling in love with their future wives, Wilma (Kristen Johnston...

Pretty much everything is funnier when a baby does it.
Think about it, when’s the last time you watched a reel of adults just laughing? Or smashing a cake with abandon? Hopefully never, because such things sound obnoxious and cringe when an adult does them. But a baby explaining the plot of Star Wars? Hilarious.
The general hilariousness of babies is also why they’re frequently featured on sitcoms, either as a reliable source of “aw” moments like baby Lily from Modern Family or to deliver snarky, funny lines like Michelle Tanner in Full House (even if she’s unrealistically clever for a toddler).
But there’s yet another infant trope endemic to sitcoms: the violent baby. These babies’ cutesy moments are juxtaposed with acts of terrible violence, making for the very best — and least predictable — type of sitcom babies.
Here are five such babies who deliver laughs by inflicting pain…...

The history of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is loaded with fun facts. The show simply gets funnier when you learn that the Waitress (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) is actually married to Charlie in real life, or that the actors for Mac and Dee (Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson) fell in love behind the scenes and got married around the premiere of season 4.
A lesser known trivia fact is that the real-life wife of Glenn Howerton (who plays beloved psychopath Dennis Reynolds) shows up in a famous season 5 episode "The D.E.N.N.I.S. System." Jill Latiano, who married Howerton around 2009, plays an attractive pharmacist named Caylee. Dennis sets his sights on her, and seduces her in a particularly disturbing way.

The latest in our series of writers recommending their go-to comfort watches is an ode to Paul Feig’s 2015 comedy starring a never-better Melissa McCarthy
It has a plot and a cast that seem cooked up during a hallucinatory fever dream. It shouldn’t work, but it does – and so splendidly, too. In Paul Feig’s comedy Spy, Melissa McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a timid CIA desk agent who gets sent out into the field by her fearsome boss (Alison Janney) after the death of her slick Bond-like colleague, Bradley Fine. The cast is full of delightful surprises. Rose Bryne is a stiletto-clad Oxford-educated villainess with quips so brutal that she makes Regina George look like Barney. Peter Serafinowicz does a game turn as an – admittedly very pre-#MeToo – cringey Italian pervert figure named Aldo (“like the shoe store found in American malls”).

Long before the debate raged over which was better between "Friends" and "How I Met Your Mother," another show tried to encroach on the iconic group of twentysomethings, housing two stars who would explode after it was cancelled. Beginning in 1998, "Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place" starred Traylor Howard, Ryan Reynolds, and Richard Ruccolo as the titular trio, with Reynolds unsurprisingly stealing the show as the sarcastic, smart-mouthed member of the group, Michael "Berg" Bergen.
Very much filling the Chandler/Barney gap in the group, Reynolds possessed the biggest presence on the show that after two seasons changed its name to "Two Guys and a Girl" dropping the "Pizza Place" entirely when Berg, along with Pete (Ruccolo) and Sharon (Howard) continued to head off into careers of their respective fields, while still dealing with the standard early adult issues of growing up and finding romance. It's great news that Rick Moranis will be returning to acting for a "Spaceballs" theatrical sequel. Even if the material turns out to be stale, Moranis won't be, as he's been semi-retired from acting since 2008 to spend more time rainsing his kids as a single dad. The "Ghostbusters" franchise may not have been able to bring him back, but those movies are getting pretty crowded, anyway, and the lure of the Schwartz is strong. We're mostly used to Moranis playing likable, relatable characters, but it's his most famous villain role of Dark Helmet that we have to thank for what may (and should) be a full-on Moranissance.
Considering how beloved the comedic actor is, readers might be surprised to know that his filmography is relatively short. Eliminate the occasional outright dud, and there are barely a dozen great movies left. Naturally, we're ranking them. Here is our countdown of the 12 best Rick Moranis movies.

References are integral to Rick and Morty. Across the eight seasons of the show, it has made a ridiculous number of references, ranging from television shows and films to politics and controversial subjects. If it can be made fun of, it is more than likely that the series has already done it.
While it strays away from making indirect references to shows in a similar space, like South Park, the series does manage to sneak in some small mentions here and there. One unexpected sitcom that the show referenced might have slipped past everyone’s radar.
Rick and Morty loves to hide references
When trying to count the number of pop culture references in a single episode of Rick and Morty, a list is often necessary, as the jokes are delivered at such a rapid pace. Thankfully, Vice made a breakdown for the third season of the series, and it...

How I Met Your Mother was always, at its heart, a laugh riot, even with all the heartbreaks, breakups, and life lessons. Ted Mosby’s winding journey toward finding “the one” gave fans a reason to tune in every week—but let’s be honest, it was the chaos, the inside jokes, the utterly ridiculous Barney-isms, and the lovable gang of five that really made it shine.
Over nine seasons and 208 episodes, the show delivered plenty of belly laughs. But some episodes? They hit that rare sweet spot between hilariously funny and absolutely fantastic. So, let us take you on a little trip down memory lane by shining the spotlight on some of the show’s most hilarious episodes that truly captured the wild, weird, and wonderful Himym energy.

"How I Met Your Mother," which ran for nine seasons, focuses on a central group of five best friends living and loving in New York City. But — with the utmost due respect to Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel, who played Ted Mosby, Robin Scherbatsky, Lily Aldrin, and Marshall Eriksen, respectively — Barney Stinson may just be the most memorable series lead. Played with wit and charm by Neil Patrick Harris, Barney is a lothario who uses increasingly deranged and outlandish tactics to get women into his bed, and while some of the jokes about his womanizing ways don't always hold up, a lot of it is still pretty funny.
Harris played Barney from the show's very first episode, which aired in 2005, all the way through the series finale in 2014. Across 208 episodes, we learn quite a lot about Barney's history, the fact that he actually has a really big heart,...

When "How I Met Your Mother" premiered in 2005, the CBS series earned some positive murmurs amongst sitom fans. Though the story of young adults dating and falling in love in New York City is not new territory for television, the unique thing about this show was framing it as a father recounting the story of how he and his friends eventually met the mother of his children.
But by the time the second season rolled around, the series starring Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, and Neil Patrick Harris had entered the zeitgeist and captured the attention of many viewers. Phrases made popular by Harris' Barney Stinson like "Challenge accepted!" and "Legen... wait for it... Dary!" entered the modern lexicon and were repeated by people across many demographics. And the conversation about Craig Thomas and Carter Bays' creation would continue for the duration of the show's run, even...

When sitcoms began in the 1950s, they were shot in a multi-camera setup on black-and-white film. Nowadays, of course, they’re all in full color and most have embraced single-camera or mockumentary formats. Laugh tracks were also standard for half a century, but for the last two decades, they’ve generally been considered too cheesy for TV.
But when you rewatch any old sitcom, none of these things will remind you of just how dated a show really is like the characters who appeared in them. This is especially true of the “ladies man,” who, in the bright lights of 2025, now just comes off as a complete creep.
1 Sam Malone in ‘Cheers’
There’s really no way that Sam Malone (Ted Danson) wouldn’t get sued for sexual harassment today. Besides the fact that he immediately cozies up to every attractive woman who enters his bar, when Diane Chambers (Shelley Long) becomes an employee,...

After an interesting season finale of Your Friends & Neighbors on Apple TV+, the show is now moving full steam, towards its second season. Season 2 of the show is expected to delve deeper into the evolving dynamics of Andrew Cooper’s personal and professional life.

According to South Park co-creator Trey Parker, The Lyons Group once offered him a buttload of money to direct a long-forgotten Barney movie if he could only fit his sense of humor under a G rating. That’s like if an NBA team tried to pay Michael Jordan millions of dollars to play basketball without jumping.
Even before South Park premiered on Comedy Central back in late 1997, the entertainment industry understood that Parker and his creative part Matt Stone were destined to be massively successful, and all of Hollywood was clamoring to capitalize on their talent. The two stop-motion short films that originated the characters and style of South Park, both titled The Spirit of Christmas, were cult hits in entertainment circles, as was Parker and Stone’s black comedy live-action film Cannibal!
