Season 2 of the smash HBO series The Last of Usis slated for release in April of this year. Catherine de Medici's story has ended on Starz. The cable channel has cancelled The Serpent Queen, so there won't be a third season. However, there is talk of a spin-off series starring Minnie Driver.
A period drama series, The Serpent Queen TV show stars Samantha Morton, Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Barry Atsma, Nicholas Burns, Danny Kirrane, Sennia Nanua, Beth Goddard, Antonia Clarke, and George Jaques. The story follows Catherine de Medici (Morton), who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant girl, Rahima (Nanua). At 14, the young, orphaned Catherine (Hill) marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement (Dance) negotiated a large dowry...

“The Serpent Queen” has been canceled after Season 2 at Starz.
A spinoff series focused on Queen Elizabeth The First is currently in development at the network as it looks to continue its partnership with “The Serpent Queen” executive producers Erwin Stoff and Justin Haythe.
The 1500s-set series starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici, the Queen of France, as she navigates political challenges as a teenager in order to seize control and rule the country for 30 years.
While no casting for the Queen Elizabeth spinoff has been revealed, Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Monarch in Season 2 of “The Serpent Queen.”
Based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” by Leonie Frieda, “The Serpent Queen” also starred Amrita Acharia, Barry Atsma, Enzo Cilenti, Sennia Nanua and Kiruna Stamell. The series used fourth-wall breaks and contemporary music to modernize the Renaissance-era story. The second season of the show,...

Exclusive: Starz is not proceeding with a third season of The Serpent Queen, starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. But it’s not all bad news for the cast of the historic drama series: I hear their options had been picked up so the actors will be paid for the unproduced Season 3 episodes.
There is also good news for the loyal fans of The Serpent Queen — a spinoff centering on Queen Elizabeth The First is in the works from the same creative team of writer/executive producer Justin Haythe and executive producer Erwin Stoff, sources said. No talent is currently attached, but Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Queen in Season 2 of Serpent Queen and is expected to reprise her role, I hear.

Minnie Driver steals the show as Queen Elizabeth I in the second season of The Serpent Queen, sparking talk of a potential spin-off series, which she would love. Season 2 delves into Catherine de Medici's relationship with her children, introducing conflict and drama alongside Driver's portrayal of Elizabeth I. Expect intense queen-on-queen drama with the emergence of a third powerful female character, played by Isobel Jesper Jones, threatening Catherine's rule.
Oscar-nominated muse Samantha Morton returns as Catherine de Medici in Starzs wickedly fun second season of The Serpent Queen. But keep your eyes on Minnie Driver this season, who winds up being the ultimate scene-stealer as Elizabeth I of England. She's so excellent in the role, and enjoyed it so much, that the idea of a stand-alone series or some kind of spin-off is already being discussed. From writer and executive producer Justin Haythe and director and executive producer Stacie Passon (based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda), Starz's latest period drama The Serpent Queen tells the story of one of history's most complex and complicated figures, Catherine de Medici, who ascends in power and status to become one of France's longest-serving rulers. As an orphan, Catherine (Liv Hill) marries into the French court at a young age, but quickly learns that she must counter — and in some instances, outmaneuver — her political opponents, many of whom would rather see her dead than on the throne. What makes the series even more intriguing is that it's Catherine herself (Samantha Morton) telling her own story, in her own words, to her newest maid and confidant Rahima (Sennia Nanua). The upcoming series also stars Colm Meaney, Ludivine Sagnier, Kiruna Stamell, Barry Atsma,...

Samantha Morton and Sennia Nanua are having a lot of fun this season as Catherine de Medici lures Rahima into her inner circle, gaining her trust while simultaneously educating her on the rules at court.
It's a psychological juxtaposition, to be sure.
Now, we've got an exclusive first look at The Serpent Queen Season 1 Episode 5, where Catherine entices Rahima into another mission on her behalf.
Rahima has come a long way from her first meeting with Catherine.
She has gone from a timid young woman chosen as the least likely to cause interference with the wicked queen to a trusted confidante.
What we cannot tell is how much of what Catherine shares with Rahima is true what she's saying merely to ensure that her objectives are met.
In this clip, Catherine and Rahima are strolling in the woods, far from Catherine's retinue.
Catherine is making a grave request of Rahima.

Historical figure Catherine de Medici gets the period-drama-with-a-twist treatment in Starz’s “The Serpent Queen,” as the show finds a unique way to tell the story of the Italian-born French queen, who influenced the politics of her adopted nation for decades.
Starring Samantha Morton as the grown-up queen, Catherine tells her story to a young woman employed in the kitchen at her court – Rahima (Sennia Nanua) – explaining to her (and the audience) how she’s survived, found agency and even thrived in a court initially unfriendly to a young Catherine (played by Liv Hill), and always dangerous. But while breaking the fourth wall, or at least turning and talking to camera, which often stands in for Rahima, may feel fresh for a television series, it is inspired by classic theater works.
“Direct address, it’s been around since the ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, but it makes something incredibly urgent,” executive producer Justin Haythe told TheWrap.

If you were to see the trailer or basically any promotional material for “The Serpent Queen,” Starz’s new series about the infamous life of one Catherine de Medici, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a showcase for Samantha Morton in a historical drama with modern touches, following in the footsteps of her recent turn in “Harlots.” Even its arresting opening credits sequence, which sees Morton stride to a throne to a heavy guitar lick as snakes slither out and toward her, suggests a show preoccupied with being Edgy and Different — a show that would consider itself to be not like Starz’s many other historical drama girls, as it were.
However: as adapted from Leonie Frieda’s biography by Justin Haythe, this perception proves to be only somewhat the case. In fact, the first few episodes of “The Serpent Queen” — which premieres Sunday, Sept. 11 — feature Morton sparingly,...

Catherine de Medici is one of the lesser known Queens despite how her family has impacted popular culture centuries later.
It's high time this misunderstood woman, the longest-reigning monarch in France's history, gets a rich and entertaining adaption of her life.
A historical drama with an edge, based in part on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda and brought to life by writer and showrunner Justin Haythe, The Serpent Queen puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici's (Samantha Morton) rise to power.
Catherine's role in history may be as an evil queen, but in the series premiere, "Medici Bitch," Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant confident, Rahima (Sennia Nanua).

The upcoming series also stars Colm Meaney, Ludivine Sagnier, Kiruna Stamell, Barry Atsma, Alex Heath,...

Starz has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming historical drama “The Serpent Queen” starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. The wicked new drama series will premiere on Sunday, September 11th.

Halloween is just over a week away, but there’s still enough time to catch up on your favorite zombie content. From “The Walking Dead” to “Army of the Dead,” and even the popular “Resident Evil” gaming franchise, zombies are huge right now, and we’re not just talking about popular movies and TV shows.
The Center for Disease Control created an online campaign to make sure that you’re prepared in the event of a zombie apocalypse (as if a global pandemic wasn’t scary enough). Elsewhere on the internet, anti-vaxxers have been using films like “I Am Legend” (which you can stream on HBO Max) to spread false conspiracy theories about the covid vaccine.

Exclusive: After a worldwide talent search, Sennia Nanua has been cast as a lead opposite Samantha Morton in Starz’s The Serpent Queen, an eight-part period drama about Catherine de Medici, from writer and executive producer Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road), Francis Lawrence & Erwin Stoff. Production is underway in France.
Based on Leonie Frieda’s book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. The Serpent Queen is described as “a cunning account of one of the most influential women ever to wear a crown. Considered an immigrant, common and plain, Catherine de Medici (Morton) is married into the 16th century French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring a fortune in dowry and produce many heirs, only to discover that her husband is in love with an older woman, her dowry is unpaid and she’s unable to conceive. Family gatherings are always a rich vein to tap for drama. Populated by the shadows and echos of every interaction past and made exciting by the risk that one of the many things best left unsaid will come spilling from careless lips.
Unfolding across a single dawdling day, Frankie is just such a story. The family matriarch, Frankie (Isabelle Huppert) has brought her thoroughly modern family – of stepdaughter and son, husbands present and ex and one beloved friend – together in beautiful Sintra, Portugal because it pleases her to do so. They have all obliged because pleasing Frankie is just what they do.
Even in the relative seclusion of Sintra, Frankie cannot pass unrecognised. To the world at large, she is film and television star Françoise Crémont and she seemingly carries a touch of divaish petulance into her personal life too. Every member of the clan has a moment to discreetly...

Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, which makes sense because gory and gruesome storylines never seem to get old. Regardless of how much we’ve grown to love watching our favorite movies on streaming platforms, there’s no shame in adding a few new Blu-Rays to your collection, and with summer and spring pushing more people outside, the films below are great for a spooky movie night under the stars. Even though Halloween is usually sanctioned for zombie and other horror movies, you can obviously watch these movies all year long.

With the first of the big year-end holidays less than a week away, those anxieties about huge family gatherings start to kick in. You know, the old conflicts, the scandals, past injustices. We’d repeat that old phrase, “Save the drama for your mama”, but she’s right in the thick of it. Or in the case of this new film, she’s the orchestrator. Like the ensemble cast holiday flicks, she’s setting the stage for some pre-July Fourth fireworks. But in this one, it’s not a major holiday, and it’s far from the old family home and hearth. So, there’s that “travelogue” element to the tale. Literally this family and a couple of friends come from different ends of the Earth at the request (more than a whim) of the matriarch named Frankie.

Isabelle Huppert works her unique magic on Frankie, a film whose insistence on staying in a minor key robs it of the chance to achieve major dimension. Huppert and a stellar cast do their best for Memphis-born director Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On, Little Men, Forty Shades of Blue) by offering tone-perfect performances to compliment his efforts to create an American version of a European art film.

"People seldom say 'no' to Frankie." Sony Classics has debuted the new full-length trailer for Frankie, the latest film from acclaimed American indie filmmaker Ira Sachs. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and they originally put out a teaser trailer just before that festival to build up some buzz. Frankie is set in the lovely town of Sintra, Portugal outside of Lisbon, where a number of palaces and castles are nestled on a hillside. The story follows three generations grappling with a life-changing experience during one day of a vacation. Starring Isabelle Huppert, along with Brendan Gleeson, Marisa Tomei, Greg Kinnear, Jérémie Renier, Vinette Robinson, with Carloto Cotta, Ariyon Bakare, and Sennia Nanua. I very much like the way this film looks and feels, so light and fresh yet it's so deeply moving and tough in its heart. This one is worth a watch. Here's the...

As a filmmaker, Ira Sachs, the director of “Love Is Strange,” “Little Men,” and (his masterpiece) “Keep the Lights On,” is like a flower that keeps sprouting new tendrils, growing ever more beautiful and complicated and delicate. His new movie, “Frankie,” may the closest that anyone has come to making an American version of an Eric Rohmer film. I say that having long compared Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” and its sequels to Rohmer (and make no mistake: all three of the “Before” films are marvelous). But “Frankie,” even more exactingly, re-creates the deceptively casual and meandering but pinpoint Rohmeresque sensation of a small handful of characters wandering around, not doing much of anything but revealing, through conversation and (occasionally) through action, who they are and how, almost imperceptibly, over the course of one movie, they might change.

Hynes’s debut as writer and director is an engaging story about a woman facing her daughter’s fears – and her own – in the ring
Everybody remembers being bullied at school, but nobody remembers being a bully. That maxim occurred to me during this stark, sober, flawed movie with which Jessica Hynes makes her worthwhile debut as writer-director. It feels like a very personal film, well acted by the A-list cast that Hynes has assembled: a cathartic meditation on the need to heal, the need to confront those who do wrong and to confront yourself when you’ve done wrong.
Hynes stars as Tina, a care-home nurse with an unhappy relationship with her elderly parents, strongly and sympathetically played by Anita Dobson and Christopher Fairbank; Shaun Parkes gives a warm and likable performance as Tina’s partner, Mick. Their sensitive daughter Emma (Sennia Nanua) is being bullied at school by...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Approaching the Apocalypse as an essential self deprecating act of survival in ‘The Girl With All The Gifts’ and ‘Planet of the Apes.’
Curiosity killed the cat. But what about Schrodinger’s feline? In Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All The Gifts, the kitty facing extinction is a young girl stumbling into an inherited wasteland where she must answer the classical thought experiment forced upon her by scientists desperate to cling on to the last dregs of humanity. Like that cat in the box, the film also attempts to exist in two states of being. It is certainly a traditional zombie film ripe with brain chomping ghouls, but The Girl With All The Girts also reaches for the moral high ground of The Twilight Zone with a climax that proudly extends a middle finger to its audience.
