Reneé Rapp Plays Coy About Reason For ‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Exit: “Sometimes You Just Know”
Image
She’s signed a hundred NDAs, but Reneé Rapp still says something when asked about her departure from HBO Max‘s The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Although the Bite Me artist didn’t get into specifics about the reason for her 2023 exit from the Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble comedy-drama, she explained that she didn’t “think anybody cared” she left.

“It was just so fun. Like, it was so fun. It was awesome,” she said when broaching the topic on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “It was just so fun.”

“Did you sign an NDA?” asked host Alex Cooper, to which Rapp confirmed, “I’ve signed many, bro.”

She recalled that the cast and crew took it “totally fine” when she announced her departure.

“Sometimes you just know,” explained Rapp. “Also, nothing on a set is ever a secret. At least, it’s really hard to do that.

Reneé Rapp Explains Why She Called Out ‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ on New Album: ‘God Forbid a Girl Uses Wordplay’ | Video
Image
Reneé Rapp has finally explained why she called out her former show “Sex Lives of College Girls” on her latest album.

While on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, host Alex Cooper dug into her new album, “Bite Me,” and specifically Rapp calling out the HBO Max comedy that she left shortly after the start of Season 3 – which would also end up being the last season.

“The lyric in your new song says, quote, ‘I took my sex life with me. Now the show ain’t f–king,” Cooper said. “Did anyone try to stop you from putting that lyric in the song?”

Rapp said nobody put the brakes on the lyrics and Cooper applauded everyone around the singer for letting her write what she wants and not worry about the rest.

“God forbid I use wordplay,” Rapp said, laughing. “God forbid a girl uses wordplay. Look, similar to all the bulls–t,...

Craving more messy romance after 'Too Much'? Start here
Image
If you’re still not over Lena Dunham’s latest, these picks will ease the heartbreak.

Rom-coms are my go-to genre — always have been. There’s just something about falling in love with a show at the same time the characters are falling for each other. And when it ends? Total heartbreak. That’s the vibe with “Too Much,” Lena Dunham’s new series about a heartbroken American and a low-key London musician who find themselves tangled in a love story neither of them planned for. It’s quiet, honest, and a little awkward (in the best way), with the kind of emotional pull that sneaks up on you. So if that ending left you feeling adrift, here are a few more shows that might just fill the gap and get you back in love.

Too Much July 10, 2025

This canceled Max show wasn't saved for season 4 (but deserved to be)
Image
There's some bad news for fans of the Max comedy series The Sex Lives of College Girls, but it's news that fans have likely been processing for quite some time. After being canceled by Max after three seasons in March, Warner Bros. failed to find a new home for the series to continue with season 4. It's an unfortunate end to this story which held a lot of promise.

Following the show's cancellation, co-creator and showrunner Justin Noble shared that it wasn't the "outcome I saw coming," since the Mindy Kaling-produced series had maintained popularity on the streamer through its season 3 run. Even if Max wasn't able to keep the series around, fans probably expected other streamers to see the potential in the series enough to save it.

Unfortunately, in an expansive interview with Deadline chatting about the state of various series, Warner Bros. Television chairman and CEO Channing Dungey...

'We Were Very Much Hoping to Find a New Home': Max Series Officially Dead After 3 Seasons
Image
School's out for good for The Sex Lives of College Girls. Warner Bros Television Group CEO Channing Dungey recently revealed that the acclaimed teen comedy series had failed to find a new home in the month following its cancelation on Max.

The disappointing renewal update was shared during a wide-ranging interview with Deadline, who asked Dungey if she could see The Sex Lives of College Girls make the jump to Netflix, similar to how The Sandman spinoff Dead Boy Detectives moved from Max to Netflix during its production. "I don’t think so. We were very much hoping to find a new home for that one, and I think we’ve now come to the end of the road, which is disappointing, because it’s a show that we really love," Dungey stated. "I’m so proud of the three seasons that we did at Max but I don’t...

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Will Not Return for Season 4 After Failing to Find a New TV Home
Image
The Sex Lives of College Girls has been canceled after three seasons at Max, and it seems like hope for the show’s future has dwindled to the point of likely no return at all for the series, despite initial reports that it might find a different TV home. While fans awaited word surrounding a potential fourth season upon the show’s cancellation at Max in March 2025, it has since been reported that the hunt for a new home has yielded no results. Below, we’re breaking down everything we know about the cancellation and what might have happened if it had been saved by another platform. What had been said about The Sex Lives of College Girls‘ potential Season 4 renewal? Series co-creator and showrunner Justin Noble took to Instagram to acknowledge The Sex Lives of College Girls‘ cancellation at Max at the time, posting, “As creatives, we’re sort...

'The Sex Lives of College Girls' Won't Be Coming Back After Shock Cancellation
Image
It’s an abstinence-only ending for The Sex Lives of College Girls, after efforts to resurrect the canceled Max series have proved futile. Back in March, the network told the comedy drama to get off (not in a good way), axing it after a three-season run. Since then, Warner Bros. Television, the folks behind the project, started working hard to secure another set of episodes that would carry on the story of the young group of friends. Unfortunately, the Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble co-created title just can’t seem to seal the deal with any other prospective buyers, making this the end of the road.

In a statement released with the heartbreaking announcement, Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. TV Group chairman told Deadline,

“We were very much hoping to find a new home for that one, and I think we’ve now come to the end of the road, which is disappointing,...

The hit college comedy series was sadly canceled after three hilarious seasons, leaving fans heartbroken and mourning one of the last great young adult comedy series on television.

That's a silver lining at least!

Beyond addressing the show's current fate, Noble shared his gratitude for his collaborator, co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling, along with Warner Bros. and Max, the cast, writers, crew, and most of all the fans.

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Canceled After Three Seasons at Max
Image
The Sex Lives of College Girls has been canceled after three seasons at Max, but production company Warner Bros. Television is exploring finding a new home for the series, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The Mindy Kaling co-created coming-of-age comedy’s most recent season wrapped in January and saw the departure of original castmember Reneé Rapp, who left two episodes into the latest run.

Sex Lives ran a mostly cliffhanger-free third-season finale leading some viewers to wonder if this was the end of the show, even though the characters were only midway through their sophomore year and the series was pretty consistently near the top of Max’s top 10 list of most-viewed shows (though that didn’t translate to making Nielsen’s wider top 10 streaming charts).

Co-showrunner Justin Noble, who oversaw the show with Kaling, insisted at the time that the episode wasn’t meant to wrap up the series.

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Canceled at Max After 3 Seasons
Image
“The Sex Lives of College Girls” is not moving forward for a fourth season at Max.

The college-set series, which was co-created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, was canceled at Max after three seasons, TheWrap learned Tuesday. The news came less than two months after “The Sex Lives of College Girls” debuted its Season 3 finale in late January, which saw an unexpected coming out story for Amrit Kaur’s Bela, as well as an emotional moment for transfer student Kacey (Gracie Lawrence).

Despite the cancellation at Max, Noble is hoping to find a new home for the Warner Bros. TV series, and shared on social media the show is “in discussions with some potential new homes for the show.”

“Unfortunately, Max has decided not to order a fourth season,” Noble wrote in a social media post Tuesday. “We are currently in discussions with some new potential homes for the show,...

The series aired for three seasons at the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service. Season 3 of the show debuted in November, with the season finale airing on Jan. 25. The show itself originally premiered on Max in 2021.

Mindy Kaling co-created the series with Justin Noble under her overall deal with studio Warner Bros. Television. Per the official logline, it “follows a group of college students at New England’s prestigious Essex College.”

Reps for Wbtv declined to comment, but according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the studio is currently shopping the show to other outlets.

The cast for Season 3 included Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Renika Williams, Gracie Lawrence, and Mia Rodgers. Reneé Rapp was a series regular for the first two seasons, but only recurred in Season 3 and...

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Done At Max After 3 Seasons, Exploring New Home For Season 4
Image
Exclusive: Essex College is closing its doors at Max as the streamer has canceled The Sex Lives Of College Girls after three seasons. But all is not lost for the ensemble comedy co-created and executive produced by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble. I hear producing studio Warner Bros. Television has been looking for ways to keep the show going, with Netflix, where Kaling has a longstanding relationship, believed to be a long-shot new home prospect given the complexities of a potential move. A rep for Wbtv declined comment.

It’s been almost two months since Season 3 of The Sex Lives Of College Girls ended its run on Max. The writing had been on the wall — possibly impacted by the departure of original cast member Reneé Rapp a few episodes in, the comedy’s third season could not match the critical and fan response as well as the viewership of the first two,...

‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Actress Gracie Lawrence on Her Character’s Confidence and Insecurities: “We’ve Uncovered the Tip of the Iceberg”
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the third season, including the finale “Essex Strong,” of The Sex Lives of College Girls.]

Gracie Lawrence’s Kacey joined Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls in the third episode of the show’s third season as a transfer student assigned to a four-person suite with Bela (Amrit Kaur), Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) after Reneé Rapp’s Leighton transferred to MIT.

Initially in a long-term relationship with Calvin (Tyler Barnhardt), with the pair ostensibly saving themselves for marriage, promise rings and all, Kacey quickly discovers that Calvin is cheating on her. As she gets involved with the school’s drama department, she meets Cooper (Roby Attal), who she ends up losing her virginity to in the penultimate episode of the season before he breaks up with her in the season finale, saying their relationship is moving too fast.

The heartbreak leads to an emotional breakdown for the seemingly confident character, with her roommates...

After That Ending, ‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Doesn’t Need a Season 4
Image
Editor's Note: Spoilers ahead for Season 3 of 'The Sex Lives of College Girls'The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 finale wasn’t intended to be the series finale, but if you watched the final episode thinking the show had just come to an end, you wouldn’t be the only one. As series co-creator Justin Noble recently told TV Line, the episode wasn’t written with the show’s potential cancellation in mind, but more so with the intention of avoiding cliffhangers by giving the girls a positive, joyful end to the season. It's true Bela (Amrit Kaur), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) went through a lot this season, dealing with breakups, academic hurdles, and mental health struggles, so it’s nice to see them end the season on a high note.

“I originally pitched it as a Disney song”: The Undisputed, Greatest Scene of Brooklyn 99 Almost Never Happened, But ‘The Backstreet Boys’ Came to Rescue
Image
Brooklyn 99 is one of the finest pieces of work to have ever come out of television, and that’s a fact that many have found hard to debate. Not only did it perfectly deliver all the laughs at just the right moments, but it even earned such a special place in fans’ hearts and continues to hold it, even years after it stopped airing.

Brooklyn 99 | Credit: Fox

That said, while the rest of the series holds a charm of its own, there’s one particular and especially undisputed greatest scene of the entire show that almost never happened. But as iconic and fan-favorite as that one scene went on to become, it almost didn’t come into existence before The Backstreet Boys came to the rescue.

‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Boss Insists Season 3 Finale Wasn’t Meant to Wrap Up Series
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the third season, including the finale “Essex Strong,” of Max’s Sex Lives of College Girls.]

If Sex Lives of College Girls fans are worried that that season three finale, which ended with the series’ main characters looking happy as they relaxed together in their dorm suite, was meant to be a series finale or a signal that their beloved show could end part-way through sophomore year, co-showrunner Justin Noble insists that wasn’t the intention.

“No one told us to, like, wrap up the show or anything like that,” he said, explaining that his approach to ending the season was more about his personal preference than any sort of dictate.

“I think just me as a creator, I’m losing interest in cliffhangers,” Noble told The Hollywood Reporter about the mostly cliffhanger-free finale. “I think it’s longer than ever between seasons for logistical reasons within the industry, and frankly, I don’t think audiences like cliffhangers the way that they used to. I think intrinsically,...

‘The Sex Lives Of College Girls’ Boss Justin Noble Unpacks “Symphony” Of Season 3 Finale “That Chooses Joy”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post spoils the finale of The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3.

Another semester at Essex College has come to an end in the finale of Season 3 of The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Showruner Justin Noble directed the Season 3 finale, which ends on a very different note compared to the Season 2 finale which had some tension brewing between Pauline Chalamet’s Kimberly and Alyah Chanelle Scott’s Whitney as well as some uncertainty for Amrit Kaur’s Bela.

“Very intentionally, this is a finale that chooses joy. These girls have come into their sophomore year of school. They’ve been challenged severely, and it felt only right that we should show the wins for all these young women who succeed in all these different ways,” Noble told Deadline. “The title for this episode was in the works for a while, it’s called ‘Essex Strong,’ and...

Every Mindy Kaling Production, Ranked
Image
Ask the average pop culture fan about Mindy Kaling and they’ll likely respond about her career as a writer, actor, and general celebrity. They’ll probably credit her, to varying degrees, for a range of projects she’s been on or behind the scenes of since “The Office,” but maybe not the specifics of her work as producer.

Kaling became a producer on “The Office,” but in 2012 founded Kaling International at the same time that she launched her own sitcom, “The Mindy Project.” Since then, the company has produced original titles across film and television, from the aforementioned single-cam sitcom to recent hits like “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” which concluded its third season on Max. To celebrate another season, we decided to revisit every Kaling International title as a primer or refresher for those interested in her work.

As a producer, Kaling has also championed projects that...

The Sex Lives of College Girls season 4 might not be necessary after season 3 ending
Image
Another semester has come to an end for our favorite college girls with The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 finale hitting Max on Jan. 23. It's been a challenging season for Kimberly, Whitney, and Bela as they said goodbye to their friend and roommate Leighton, who went off to Boston, and said hello to their much different new roommate Kacey.

Going into the season finale, the girls had each been tested in their own way. Kimberly continued to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of her future goals and how her current actions could have an impact. Whitney struggled with her status as a college athlete and her mental health. Kacey grappled with the loss of her virginity, and Bela pushed against conventions to accept her sexuality.

But after watching The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 finale, fans might be wondering whether the Max original series will be back for season 4. No spoilers yet,...

‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Season 3 Ending Explained: Showrunner Breaks Down Bela’s Big Reveal
Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” Season 3, Episode 10.

“The Sex Lives of College” wrapped up Season 3 with an unexpected reveal: A coming out story for Amrit Kaur’s Bela.

Despite only dating guys throughout her time at Essex, Bela’s romantic interest is piqued by Hailey (Melinda Belle Adams), the host of the storytelling show she joined in last week’s episode. After kissing Hailey at a party, Bela officially comes out as bisexual to her roommates — a twist showrunner Justin Noble said hasn’t been in the works since Season 1, but one that doesn’t surprise him.

“Bela has always been this character who’s down to try anything, do anything,” Noble told TheWrap, adding that many sheltered teens like herself have “massive discovery journeys” in college. “I wanted Bella to be a counterbalance to the story we did with Leighton (Reneé Rapp...

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Boss on Tackling Virginity in the Season 3 Finale and Open Relationships in a Potential Season 4: ‘Am I Making the Show Too Queer?’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”

For once, the sex lives of the college girls in “The Sex Lives of College Girls” are going all right.

Bela (Amrit Kaur) has the most surprising evolution of the quartet: In the finale, after three seasons of maximally obsessing over sex with men, she spontaneously kisses her new friend Haley (Belle Adams), then gleefully comes out as bisexual to all of her friends the next day. There’s a slight hiccup when her mom (Kavi Ramachandran Ladnier) shows up to a comedy show at which she planned to publicly announce her queerness. But later, she holds hands with Haley in front of her mom, who reacts with nothing but love and acceptance.

After Essex police officers break up a peaceful protest about an offensive speaker appearing on campus, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) leads...

‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Star Gracie Lawrence on Weirdest Self-Tape Locations, Auditioning to Play Kacey and Juggling Music and Acting
Image
Though “Sex Lives of College Girls” fans know Gracie Lawrence as Kacey, a theater nerd and the new fourth roommate in Season 3, things could have been much different.

“She was a finalist to play Kimberly in Season 1,” co-creator and executive producer Justin Noble says, adding that Lawrence was in the final three under consideration for the role, which eventually went to Pauline Chalamet. But two seasons later, as the minds behind “Sex Lives of College Girls” conceptualized Kacey for the small screen, Lawrence’s audition once again stood out.

“She’s so funny and charming,” Noble says, comparing Lawrence’s take on Kacey to a “cute little Reese Witherspoon character” who rounds out the rest of the cast.

Lawrence, a singer-songwriter and actor also known for her band, Lawrence, which she co-leads with her brother Clyde, had previous credits on Showtime’s series “Billions” and the Netflix film “Moxie.”

Rapp left the hit Max series to focus more on her growing music career, leaving a room open in the gang's suite, which was later filled by newcomer Gracie Lawrence as Kacey. Mia Rodgers also joined the main cast as Taylor.

After a season full of ups and downs (more downs than ups depending on which fan you might ask), The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 will soon be ending with its highly anticipated season finale. When does...

10 Actors Who Shockingly Quit Hit TV Shows
Image
Saying goodbye to one's favorite TV character is rarely an easy feat, and it's made all the more difficult when the exit of a fan-favorite character appears to come out of nowhere. It seems obvious that having a successful TV show would make it difficult to walk away, but actors like Steve Carell and Jim Parsons prove otherwise. Actors have varying reasons for wanting to leave their popular TV series, such as difficult filming schedules, relentless conflict with fellow co-stars, or the simple desire to switch things up and try something new.

Regardless of each actor's reasons, audiences were taken aback by the decisions as it didn't feel like the right time for actors to walk away from series such as Grey's Anatomy and That '70s Show. Still, as difficult as it was for fans to accept these goodbyes when they first occurred, hindsight reveals that everything worked out fine in the end.

Reneé Rapp, an actress and musician, is leaving her breakthrough role as Leighton Murray in HBO Max’s comedy series The Sex Lives of College Girls. Her character’s emotional farewell takes place in the second episode of Season 3, marking a watershed moment for both the show and its loyal fans.

This well-designed exit celebrates Leighton’s personal development and self-acceptance.

Co-showrunner Justin Noble addressed Leighton’s departure, citing it as the natural conclusion of her character development. Leighton Murray has never lost or relinquished anything in her life. So the only way she’d quit is if it was a clear victory for herself,” Noble told Variety. The...
