“Kubo-Sensei tells us about them”: Tite Kubo May Be the Sole Reason Behind One of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War’s Greatest Accomplishments
Image
Tite Kubo is the legendary author of Bleach, a series that redefined shonen and action genres. With a masterful blend of fantastical myths and the simplicity of the hearts of high schoolers, Kubo crafts a ginormous web of connectivity and sees the scenes play out.

Ichigo Kurosaki | Credits: Studio Pierrot

The direct involvement in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has elevated the anime adaptation to incredible heights, unlike most anime, which have the animation studio refer to the source material and give their own rendition of it, whether it be fight scenes or background stories, Pierrot and Kubo seemed to have a collective determination to spread Bleach all over the world.

As the one who designed it, Tite Kubo is there one who is capable of blending the original manga elements with fresh scenes that not only seem canon but also fit perfectly into the story of the series. This hands-on...

Few anime characters stand a chance of defeating Satoru Gojo and his formidable power of Infinity, but a fair number could come close to challenging him. None of them have what it takes to finish the job, but they could still give Satoru Gojo a workout and push him harder than Jogo and the other curses in Mahito's squad ever could. Official One Piece Animator Claps Back Against AI Art Comment
Image
An official One Piece animator for Toei's hit anime has delivered the perfect comeback to the maker of a viral AI art thread belittling hard-working artists in the industry.

It all started when X user Óscar Bartolomé started a thread for his AI art creations made through Niji Journey, beginning with generated images of Saori Kido from Saint Seiya. However, the thread that went viral was one in which Bartolomé lamented over a different X user gaining popularity by using one of the former's Saori images. This is an ironic situation given the accusations of AI art programs stealing the works of professional artists without compensation and lacking copyright protection themselves, as stated in the Community Note of Bartolomé's post. Nonetheless, Bartolomé continued to showcase his AI art while continuously mocking those who were against AI-generated artwork.

The 20 Best Anime Series of 2023
Image
I am not sure if it has something to do with the release of another Miyazaki film this year, but the whole anime industry actually seems to experience another surge, with the titles of quality coming one after the other. That this level actually applies to series that continue, new ones, based on manga or original, remakes and relaunches, and the streaming ones is probably the most astonishing feat for 2023, in one of the best seasons in anime we have seen lately.

Without further ado, here are the best anime of 2023, in reverse order, in a list that includes titles whose season or the whole series ended in 2022.

Anime to Be Released Faster and More Cheaply With New "Light" Production
Image
One of the biggest production companies in Japan, Imagica Group, has reached a deal that will see the "full-scale production" of light anime -- a new, cheaper anime medium.

Yomiuri reports that Dai Nippon Printing and Imagica Group subsidiary Imagica Foss have entered into a business partnership for the joint production of light anime. They add that this is the first time a major Japanese company has attempted to produce light anime in earnest. Dai Nippon Printing will plan the anime while Imagica will produce them, with each series having between six and 12 episodes, each around 10 minutes in length. The first batch of light anime will air on TV and online distribution services in 2024. The president of Imagica Foss was bullish about the medium's potential, saying, "When an anime director directs the production and a popular voice actor provides the voice, the degree of perfection is surprisingly high."

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Beyblade recently promoted the lyric version of the anime's ending theme, "Zoom Zoom" by aespa. The ending credits explicitly reference the use of AI in the video, listing AI producer Arai Mono, AI director Daru, AI production managers Yutaro Mochizuki, Hiroaki Yabusaki and Cyokut, and AI artist Layris as collaborators. All of them come from the company AiHUB. Fans were quick to notice, slamming the company for the choice in what's becoming an increasingly intense ongoing AI debate.

Bleach Anime Director Makes Controversial AI Statements At The Worst Possible Time
Image
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War director Tomohisa Taguchi's comments on AI in anime are tone-deaf and in bad taste considering recent industry controversies. The comments made by Taguchi and Crayon Shin-chan director Keiichi Hara seem to make light of the issues surrounding Studio Mappa and its toxic work environment. The controversy raises the question of whether AI has a place in anime, but based on past examples, it seems that AI is not suitable for the medium.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War director Tomohisa Taguchi has decided to comment on AI as a creative tool, and his timing couldn’t be worse. Over the past few years, AI has been a highly contentious topic because of the fear of it replacing creatives and how willing executives have been to let it happen, with the recent SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes revolving heavily around limiting its use in media production.

‘Doesn’t Get Tired Or Sleep’: Veteran Anime Directors Call For AI To Replace ‘Lazy Animators’
Image
On one hand, while a number of animators and staff members from the anime industry have sternly spoken against the use of AI, anime directors Keiichi Hara and Tomohisa Taguchi, who are veterans in their own right, had an entirely different opinion regarding it.

As reported by Full Frontal, both Hara and Taguchi, who were talking at a panel at this year’s Annecy Festival, believed that AI, which doesn’t complain, get tired or sleep, could be a good tool to replace “lazy animators” and do the work in their place.

This opinion has stirred various sections of fandom, who believed that the directors shouldn’t have made such a comment in light of the recent developments.

Hara was talking about the difficulties of making animated feature films, when the topic shifted to lazy animators “who are being paid without putting in the work that’s expected of them.

Bleach Tybw Anime Director Says AI Can Replace "Lazy" Animators
Image
Two anime industry veterans, including the director of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, have stirred controversy over their recent comments regarding AI.

As reported by the animation blog Full Frontal, Bleach: Tybw director Tomohisa Taguchi and Keiichi Hara held a panel at the Annecy Film Festival, describing their filmmaking histories. As Hara spoke about his latest film, he took aim at animators in Japan who reportedly drove up the budget due to their laziness and incompetence, calling them "leeches." He also revealed a growing trend of talented animators getting paid before producing any work and allegedly not giving 100% to the project because of it.

Digimon's New Movie Changes The Original Series Forever
Image
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning reveals the true reason for the existence of DigiDestined in the Adventure continuity, showing that it was created by Ukkomon rather than occurring naturally. The concept of DigiDestined being artificially created devalues the friendships between humans and Digimon, as they are essentially compelled to bond with each other. Despite the dark twist, the main characters maintain that their friendships with Digimon are genuine and not contingent on Ukkomon's powers.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Digimon Adventure 02: The BeginningDigimon Adventure 02: The Beginning has been released, and it changes the original series forever. The Beginning is the latest story to explore the time between MaloMyotismon’s defeat in Digimon Adventure 02 and the epilogue that took place 25 years later. This story, in particular, focuses on the first DigiDestined in the Adventure continuity, so it was all but guaranteed to have a major impact on Adventure’s lore.

Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning Review: A Dark And Engrossing Chapter In The Popular Franchise
Image
"Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning" begins, like all good "Digimon" stories should, with Maurice Ravel's "Boléro." The track starts playing as a giant Digi-egg appears floating above Tokyo Tower. It quickly starts emitting an electromagnetic pulse that impacts every screen on the planet and declares "May everyone in the world have friends. May they each have a Digimon," in several languages. When the egg hatches, it spells chaos around the world, and it is up to the second-generation DigiDestined to stop it.

Except, there's not much in terms of fighting. There are no Dark Masters threatening to destroy the world. Compared to other "Digimon" movies, the action is barely there, but the film still offers a dark and engrossing story that brings "Digimon" to psychological and even body horror territory. It may not be the big "Digimon" event that fans of the emotionally devastating "Last Evolution Kizuna" may be expecting,...
