Despite Its Rotten Tomatoes Score, Tyler Perry's New Netflix Thriller Has Spent a Week at the Top of Their Charts
Image
Netflix debuted its new thriller film, Straw, on the platform last Friday, and the film has hit its stride with a legendary run of streaming success. Straw stars Taraji P. Henson and follows a single mother as she finds herself wandering down a path she never envisioned for herself, suddenly in the middle of suspicion in an indifferent world. Straw hit Netflix on June 6, and the film is still the most popular movie on the streamer, sitting at #1 at the time of writing. What makes this even more impressive is that the film has not been particularly well-received by critics or audiences. Straw currently sits at a “rotten” 50% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even the audience-driven Popcornmeter lands at a 74%.

Straw was written and directed by Tyler Perry, and it also stars Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Sinbad, Glynn Turman, and more. Perry will always be known for his work on the Madea franchise,...

All 8 Predator movies ranked, including Predator: Killer of Killers
Image
Editor's note: This article was originally published on August 6, 2022 following the release of Prey. It has been updated to include the new movie Predator: Killer of Killers.

With the release of Predator: Killer of Killers, it’s the perfect time to look back on one of Hollywood’s most iconic sci-fi horror franchises. There have been great Predator movies, there have been bad Predator movies, and there have been plenty of Predator movies somewhere in between. We’re going to go through all of them and rank ’em!

And before you ask: yes, we are including the Alien vs. Predator films in these rankings. More movies makes for more fun, and we have thoughts. That said, you can probably guess which film is going to land in the number seven spot…

8. Alien vs. Predator (2004)

The ‘Alien’ and ‘Predator’ Movies, Ranked Worst to Best
Image
No two horror movie villains ever seemed more ideally suited for one another than the Predator and the Alien, the cinema’s greatest hunter and cinema’s deadliest beast.

Created by very different filmmakers in totally different decades, the idea that these two creatures co-existed stems from a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter egg in “Predator 2,” which briefly showed the head of the iconic Alien inside of a Predator’s trophy case. In the years to come they would share top billing in comic books, video games and eventually a couple of movies, to the extent that the two franchises now feel indelibly linked, even when new installments of each monster’s movie makes no mention of the other.

Let’s take a look at both series, together, to see how the films stack up individually and as a unit.

15. “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007) 20th Century Fox

The 13 Best Netflix Original Horror Movies, Ranked
Image
It’s a cliché but it’s a cliché for a reason: Netflix puts out so many movies that most people never even hear about them. That sucks, because while they can’t all be bangers, a lot of those Netflix Originals deserve an audience. Especially their horror flicks, because believe it or not they’ve put out a lot of fantastic scary flicks for fans of all ages.

Let’s take a look at the best Netflix Original horror movies, shall we…?

Lucy Boynton in ‘I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House’ (Netflix) 13. ‘I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives Inside the House’ (2016)

Before his big, breakout hits “Longlegs” and “The Monkey,” Osgood Perkins lurked in Hollywood’s shadows, quietly gaining cinematic power with artsy, eerie sleepers like “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.” Ruth Wilson (“Luther”) stars as a nurse hired to live in an old,...

‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ Takes the Franchise to the Viking Era: Where (and When) Else Have Predators Gone?
Image
“Predator: Killer of Killers” arrives this summer on Hulu, the first animated film in the long-running franchise and one of two new “Predator” movies due out this year. “Killer of Killers” also finds the franchise headed to another era — actually, in this case, three.

The new animated film, directed by “Prey” filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg and set to release on June 6, 2025, will be an anthology story. In total, fans will get to experience a Predator story in the Viking era, feudal Japan, and WWII Europe, each with different heroes leading them. More details on that below.

But before we get there, let’s take stock of everywhere — and every time — the “Predator” franchise has been. It actually dates back pretty far.

Predator (1987) 20th Century Fox

The first “Predator” film, released back in 1987 — with the events of the film taking place the same year — stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch Schaefer, who is...

Extended Cut of Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder Confirmed; Longer Song to Song Rumored
Image
Terrence Malick’s status as a moving target––more accurately, a target who rushes towards us while seen through a wide-angled lens––makes it easy to lose track of odds and ends. Thus I sometimes forget our report from August 2023, based on a pair of rather reliable sources, about a longer cut of To the Wonder, à la The Tree of Life or The New World, which would possibly integrate footage from Eugene Edwards’ adjacent docufiction Thy Kingdom Come. (A great film in its own right and essential companion you can rent here.) When we’d first heard of this in 2019 it was deemed a major time-consumer, and with workflow later derailed by Covid it became uncertain when (or if) this project saw the light of day.

But now a major update comes courtesy Keith Fraase, one of that film’s five credited editors, who told podcast Writers on Film,...

Crazy Bear (2023)
Borderline (2025) Movie Ending Explained: Does Paul Duerson Marry Sofia?
Crazy Bear (2023)
From the writer of “Cocaine Bear” (2023), Jimmy Warden, comes a wacky genre-melting pot in the form of “Borderline” (2025), a horror comedy thriller directed by Warden, focusing on the stalker and pop star dynamic and pushing that premise to an absolute breaking point.

Borderline (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis Who is Paul Duerson?

The movie begins at the end—Paul Duerson (Ray Nicholson) finally marrying his favorite pop star and the love of his life, Sofia (Samara Weaving), before Paul’s voiceover takes us back to the beginning. That would be his first attempt at marrying Sofia. Duerson’s fandom, as it turned out, is quite well known, especially to everyone within Sofia’s vicinity. In Duerson’s imagination, he and Sofia had been together for quite a while, and now asking the question was inevitable.

But this highly active imagination blurred Paul’s reality, whereby he would forget whether he had...

“It’s just not depicted very often”: Sandra Bullock Was Onboard to Fight 1 Prejudice in ‘Bird Box’ That Hollywood Treated Like Taboo
Image
Sandra Bullock was known for her roles as a bubbly and funny rom-com lead (with a few exceptions) in the ‘90s and 2000s before she had a turn in films like Bird Box and The Unforgivable. The former, especially, created a huge impact on Netflix at the time of release and became the most-watched film on the platform in 28 days.

In many ways, Bullock played against type in the horror-survival film. Directed by Academy Award-winning Dutch filmmaker Susanne Bier, Bird Box subverted several tropes in terms of action-horror films and also the way a female protagonist was often depicted. One specific scene broke a taboo that Hollywood was more accepting of with male action stars.

“That was a f—king waste of time”: Sandra Bullock’s ‘Bird Box’ Conquered Netflix, but Trent Reznor Absolutely Hated ‘Phony’ Experience
Image
Bird Box is easily one of the most significant films in Netflix’s history. With its excellent cast full of actors like Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Sarah Paulson, and even Machine Gun Kelly, the record-breaking film became a cultural phenomenon upon its release.

A still from Bird Box | Credit: Netflix

One would assume, considering its success, that everyone on the project had the time of their lives when they were making the film. However, it would seem that one part of the production was tirelessly unrewarding.

Even though the movie’s soundtrack was made by two members of the legendary band Nine Inch Nails, the experience was very frustrating for the two musicians.

Bird Box, Nine Inch Nails, and a very big roadblock

A movie is a lot more than the actors that star in it. Several important aspects of production can be the difference between a memorable and a forgettable project.

The Predator (2018) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Horror Action Movie?
Image
A Predator movie directed by Shane Black, written by him and the director of The Monster Squad. This sounded like the recipe for an awesome sci-fi action horror film, but what Black delivered was one of the least popular films in the Predator franchise, with a third act that was completely different from what was originally written and a variety of bad ideas being filmed as potential endings. Critics were unimpressed. Fans were disappointed. And now, we’re going to dig into what happened to The Predator.

1987 was a huge year for Shane Black. His original screenplay Lethal Weapon was turned into an action classic by director Richard Donner. His friend, director Fred Dekker, brought their script for the creature feature The Monster Squad to the screen, creating a film that is now considered to be a cult classic. And he was cast alongside the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers,...

Recasting Black Panther For The MCU After Recent Reports: 10 Actors Who Could Play T'Challa
Image
Following a major Black Panther report, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is seemingly getting ready to bring back T'Challa, and there are a few talented stars who could take on such a prestigious role. Chadwick Boseman was one of the McU's most beloved actors. His death after a battle with colon cancer was incredibly tragic, and Marvel chose to honor the actor by making Black Panther: Wakanda Forever a beautiful study on mourning and healing from the pain, becoming one of the McU's best movies.

The emotional film showed how strong Letitia Wright's Shuri was, making her Marvel's new Black Panther. Three years since the movie was released, a new Black Panther report claims Marvel is recasting T'Challa. According to the rumors, an actor has already passed on the role, as Boseman's shoes would be too big to fill. Only a few actors have the necessary skills to lead the...

10 Horror Movies To Watch If You Loved A Quiet Place
Image
John Krasinski made a major splash in 2018 with his debut horror feature, A Quiet Place. Along with co-writing and directing, Krasinski also starred in the film opposite Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt (his real-life wife). The thrilling film takes place in the near future, after Earth has been overtaken by violent aliens that hunt by sound. The audience is put in the shoes of a family who struggles to survive in a world in which making noise could result in certain death.

A Quiet Place was not only a hit in the horror community, but actually gained a massive audience around the world, as it ended up appealing to many people who wouldn't typically enjoy horror. Part of this is due to the way the film relies more heavily on suspense, as opposed to things like gore and excessive jump scares. The inclusion of a clever, captivating plot and several...

There were several reasons for this, ranging from its excellent premise to its impressive cast. The addition of Machine Gun Kelly was certainly surprising; it was the presence of Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich, and Lil Rel Howery that had audiences turning heads.

However, it would seem that there was one specific actor who Bullock needed to be in the film. In fact, she ended up threatening to leave if he was not cast in the role.

Bird Box (2018) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Sometimes books are mega hits and get turned into movies that take off. There’s just something that captures the zeitgeist and it’s destined to be. Harry Potter came out of nowhere and then turned into a franchise of books, video games, Lego sets, and of course movies. Other times, authors release something that will undoubtedly get picked up as the track record for success is already there. This is the Stephen King special or even Michael Crichton when he was still active. Adaptations can come from cases of re-adaptations like Dracula, Frankenstein, and other classics that get recycled over and over again, especially of they fall into the public domain. There’s the rare case, though, that an unknown author has a manuscript pop and movie studios jump at the chance to create something new. The journey and strange tale of the author of Bird Box falls under that last category.

Bird Box's Ending, Explained
Image
Bird Box ends on a hopeful note, but despite its optimistic ending, it still leaves many unanswered questions. Malorie went on an emotional journey and finally opened her heart to her family. The world of Bird Box still needs to give humanity a fighting chance.

Bird Box quickly rose to prominence when it came out in 2018, and while the movie's suspenseful atmosphere had fans on the edge of their seats, the ending left a lot of questions unanswered. The true horror of the plot lay in the fact that the film's monsters were not something that could be fought, only avoided. Humanity is forced to hide from these unseen villains and hope that this was enough to stay safe. Given how the events of the movie played out, however, even the safest of places often feel like they are living on borrowed time.

Ranking The ‘A Quiet Place’ Movies and the Ripoffs Its Inspired
Image
One of the most surprising franchises in recent years, A Quiet Place: Day One brings the franchise back to theaters. The third film inside a decade, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, and now Lupita N’yongo, has proven it’s got staying power. There’s a lot to like about the franchise, so much so that a few similar movies and shows have reached for similar material. A few of these movies existed or were in production alongside A Quiet Place. Yet their similarity speaks to Hollywood’s never-ending willingness to push out movies with similar themes and ideas simultaneously.

Why Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight Is An LGBTQ+ Movie Masterpiece
Image
In one of Moonlight's most iconic shots, Mahershala Ali's Juan holds Alex Hibbert's Little on the surface of the ocean, his hands gently cradling the boy's head and legs. Tyler Perry’s New Movie Makes Up For Sistas Season 7’s Most Jarring Character Recast

Tyler Perry's legal thriller Mea Culpa helps reconcile a recasting decision in the BET drama series Sistas. Fans were upset with Perry's series Sistas for abruptly recasting Sean Sagar's character Jordan for season 7. Sean Sagar's exit from Sistas led to big roles in Mea Culpa and NCIS: Sydney.

Tyler Perry's new legal thriller Mea Culpa helps to reconcile an abrupt recasting decision within the production of his BET drama series, Sistas. Perry teamed with Netflix for the nail-biter Mea Culpa, an original film that follows a criminal defense attorney who takes on a murder case that becomes much more than it seems on the surface. Following the film's debut, Mea Culpa continues to stave off heavy criticism of Perry's absurd and hollow approach to what could have been an intriguing plot line, but be that as it may, the movie still has some, albeit a few, redeeming qualities.

A Spicy New Crime Drama Is Reigning Over Netflix's Top 10
Image
A new Tyler Perry legal thriller, "Mea Culpa," has quickly climbed up the Netflix global Top 10 charts despite being poorly received by critics. There's an absurdist streak in the story where almost nothing makes much sense, leaning hard into exaggerated and predictable plot progressions that feel unrealistic from start to finish. Perhaps this willful absurdity contributes to the guilty pleasure of it all, shooting "Mea Culpa" to the top of the streaming charts, where it's sitting at number one as of this writing.

Part sleazy erotic thriller, part relationship drama, "Mea Culpa" centers on criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), who needs to take on a case involving artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes) and his deceased girlfriend Hydie (María Gabriela González). Although there are reasons to believe that Zyair is guilty of murdering Hydie, Mea's increasing attraction to her client further complicates matters, despite her dedication to uncovering the truth.

Tyler Perry's New Netflix Movie Destroys His Most Optimistic Rotten Tomatoes Streak 5 Years In The Making
Image
Mea Culpa broke Tyler Perry's promising Rotten Tomatoes streak, marking a step back for the filmmaker. A Madea Family Funeral and A Jazzman's Blues improved Perry's scores prior to Mea Culpa's disappointment. Perry's next film, Six Triple Eight, offers redemption with a diverse cast and unique World War II story.

Tyler Perry’s movies are a hit or miss with critics, and his latest Netflix project has now destroyed his most optimistic Rotten Tomatoes streak that had been building up in the last five years.
