Osamu Nishi, the author of Ichi the Witch manga, recently disclosed her inspirations for representing magic as living creatures, known as Majiks, in the series.
In an interview, which was published as a part of MangaPlus’s sixth anniversary celebration, Nishii cited Card Captor Sakura and Pokémon as key influences in shaping the way her series handles both “hunting” magic and partnering with it.
Nishi explained that Cardcaptor Sakura involves the protagonist collecting scattered magic, which appealed to her interest in collecting things.
Similarly, the concept in Pokémon of collecting creatures that become partners and growing stronger together resonated with her.
These influences led her to portray magic in Ichi the Witch as living beings called Majiks, which serve both as adversaries for the main character, Ichi, to hunt and as reliable partners after being hunted.
The series is a collaborative work between Nishi and artist Shiro Usazaki. In the same interview,...

Official Blue Lock series artist Yusuke Nomura has taken to social media to hype up a brand-new manga coming to Weekly Shonen Jump, calling it and its own artist -- a well-known acquaintance of his -- 'scary.'
Embers is a new soccer-focused manga set to debut in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #10, written by Kei Kurumazagi and illustrated by Soutarou Nishii. The story will center on Haitani, a delinquent who is very good at fighting, and his introduction to soccer. Manga fans have been showing growing excitement for the title, as it is reminiscent of classics like Slam Dunk. Nomura, seeing some strong competition for Blue Lock in the newcomer, has joked that Nishii is "out to crush" Blue Lock. His good-natured support isn't all that surprising, given that Nishii was originally a staff member of Blue Lock's manga team and was responsible for many of the dynamic backgrounds.

Veteran animator Terumi Nishii has taken to social media to express her frustration with what she perceives as unreasonable demands for political correctness in anime production.
Nishii Terumi, has worked as an animation director on various anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures, and Death Note, among others.
In a series of tweets, Terumi recounted an incident, where an overseas client had requested that black characters in her work be given defined noses to distinguish them properly from other characters, who typically lack detailed nostrils.
This request, she argued, would disrupt the visual balance of the characters and create an inconsistent level of realism within the same series.
“None of the other characters even had nostrils, so if just the black characters had a different level of realism, it would look unbalanced. That kind of thing is just… yeah. In the end, it turned into a conversation...

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 chief animation director Nishii Terumi says the Japanese government is selling out the country and its creators over its A.I. stance, following ChatGPT developer OpenAI's launch of a new Japanese office.
OpenAI's expansion in Japan was criticized this week, intensifying after comments made by the vice president of external relations Anna Makanju. She cited the Japanese government's lax stance on A.I. as a motivation for its decision to launch OpenAI Japan, praising it, "They have adopted a consistent approach of not aiming for strict A.I. regulations." Nishii responded to this, stating, "They steal all they want because we're a content powerhouse -- this is what 'Cool Japan' is really about. They never protect the industry or creators. It was a field where we were winning. The Ldp [Liberal Democratic Party] has been in decline for 30 years. They are thoroughly selling out this country." Cool...

While recent events have made fans more aware of poor animator conditions, anime staff more generally are suffering, with a new report by the Nippon Anime Film Culture Association (Nafca) revealing average hourly payments of just $7.
Nafca surveyed 323 anime staff, of which 191 (59%) were animators, with 44 unit directors (13.6%), the latter responsible for a divisible unit of production, such as an opening or ending song, or an entire episode/part of a film. The number also included 35 production staff (10.8%), 27 character/mechanical designers (8.4%), 23 voice actors (7.1%), 20 directors, 15 working in coloring, 14 in art, 14 in cinematography, 11 in CG, 10 in sound and 4 screenwriters. Nafca's data concluded that the overall median hourly wage was 1,111 yen (US$7.33 per hour), with 14% making around only $5.23 hourly. The income report excluded voice actors for this segment, adding that how voice actors work in the anime industry sets them apart from other professions. The report organizers plan a future survey specific to voice actors in the future.

An anime insider has slammed the culture of discrimination in the industry, blasting Japan's prejudice against animators subcontracted from China in a now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) thread.
In the archived posts, the animator slammed an unnamed anime studio that he had been working for, adding that the studio in question had been "under fire for the last two years." He revealed his astonishment at their amateur skill, concerned at how they kept hiring inexperienced people, and lamented how older animators are not/cannot pass down their skills to younger creators. He added that this incompetence was present at the main Japanese animation studio and not the subcontracted companies in China, and that the foreign studios "can do it better than the main contractors now." He continued, "And when I'm making animation with Chinese people, I feel the industry's disregard for Chinese people. I've never seen a Japanese animation that...

A recent survey finds that a shocking proportion of workers involved in creating anime have developed mental health illnesses.
Nhk reported on a survey by the Japan Animator and Director Association, which found that 17% of those involved in anime production currently suffer or have suffered from mental illnesses such as depression. 429 people were consulted with 73 admitting mental struggles; additionally, 291 people (68%) said they felt mentally fatigued and 285 (66%) felt physically fatigued. "I continue to work as an animator because I find it rewarding," she added, "but I have seen many people suffering from mental illness up close.
