If you’re a fan of spooky stories, you might have heard of Dear David, the viral Twitter thread that chronicled the alleged haunting of a New York apartment by a child ghost. Now, the online phenomenon has been adapted into a feature film by Lionsgate, and it promises to deliver even more chills and thrills.

Back in 2017, BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis wrote out a ghost story (which he swears is completely true) on Twitter, and that story caught so much attention that there was soon talk of a movie adaptation. The project, titled Dear David, was first set up at New Line Cinema in 2018, then made its way over to Lionsgate. Now Lionsgate has announced that they’ll be giving Dear David a theatrical, digital, and VOD release on October 13th – and along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can watch in the embed above.

Lionsgate and BuzzFeed are bringing the creepy viral story Dear David to the big screen with a brand new horror movie, and the official trailer has been released this afternoon.

The supernatural thriller was originally set up at New Line with Dan Lin producing but we can reveal that the project is now set as the next production on Lionsgate and BuzzFeed’s feature slate.

BuzzFeed is revamping its studio business by putting Cindy Vanegas-Gesuale, its current head of programming at BuzzFeed News, in charge of its TV and film operations, according to a company memo.

Vanegas-Gesuale replaces Lauren Dolgen, who last month left the company to join the Paramount Network. She’s expected to jumpstart its studio business, which has struggled to create projects that gain much traction since its launch in 2014.

Hollywood loves its horror films and New Line Cinema won a bidding war for a new one called Dear David. The movie is based on an online ghost story from former BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis and It producer Dan Lin has jumped on board to help develop the film.

The Dear David movie is officially happening at New Line. The studio won a bidding war for social media ghost story from former BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis. Late last summer, Ellis started his unique ghost story on Twitter about the ghost of a dead child that had been haunting his apartment and trying to kill him. Ellis added to the story multiple times a week and it quickly went viral, earning the writer over a million followers in social media in just a few months.

Back in June, BuzzFeed Studios partnered with It producer Dan Lin, and now New Line will distribute the horror film, which may or may not be entitled Dead David when all is said and done. Mike van Waes is writing the script based on the story and BuzzFeed Studios' Lauren Dolgen and Hieu Ho are also on board to produce the horror movie, based on a viral Twitter thread.

New Line Cinema has snapped up the rights to Dear David, the first urban legend ghost story that unfolded on social media from BuzzFeed contributor Adam Ellis.

Mike Van Waes is attached as the writer, based on a story by Van Waes and Evan Turner. The feature film is described as being a high concept horror-thriller, with all other details under wraps.

Ellis’ ghost story first appeared in August 2017 as a series of social media posts which he then re-wrote as an ongoing BuzzFeed post, “Dear David,” which went viral. Ellis amassed more than 1M Twitter followers as the story grew between Aug. 7 and Dec. 12, 2017.

Adam Ellis, the former BuzzFeed writer who just scored a movie deal for his viral social media ghost story, “Dear David,” has answered everyone’s most pressing question: Is it real?

“I’ve never been interested in convincing anyone that ghosts are real — I just wanted to tell my story,” Ellis told TheWrap. “If it was all fiction, I probably would’ve updated more than once every couple weeks.”
