Showrunner David Stassen on why ‘Running Point’ is a slam dunk with viewers: It’s ‘a return to traditional comedy’
Image
If you find yourself laughing out loud while watching the new sports comedy Running Point, you're not alone. The Netflix hit is "a return to traditional comedy," showrunner-producer David Stassen tells Gold Derby, and it also provides viewers with that "big feel" they've been "craving."

Cocreated by Stassen, Elaine Ko, Mindy Kaling, and Ike Barinholtz, Running Point stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, a former party girl who becomes the president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team. The family-owned business includes older brother Cam (Justin Theroux), middle brother Ness (Scott MacArthur), and younger brother Sandy (Drew Tarver), plus surprise half-brother Jackie (Fabrizio Guido).

The 10-episode first season of Running Point dropped Feb. 27 on Netflix, and it was picked up for Season 2 days later. The series is eligible at the 2025 Emmys in the comedy categories.

Here is our full interview with Stassen, which includes spoilers for the full Season 1.

The 30 Best Movie Scores of the 2000s
Image
This article is part of IndieWire’s 2000s Week celebration. Click here for a whole lot more.

If the movies of the 2000s were defined by a period of violent transition (both onscreen and off), the music that was written for those movies captured the full sweep of that change — and the endless possibilities it allowed for in turn. The aughts were absent a single identifying element as strong to the decade as synths were to the ’80s or symphonic grandeur was to the ’90s, and to judge by our list of the period’s best scores it sounds like they might have been all the better for it.

On the one hand, the 2000s saw venerated masters like John Williams and Terence Blanchard deliver some of the greatest work of their careers, while journeyman like “Lord of the Rings” composer Howard Shore emerged into legendary status with a single...

Image
New York Mets infielder Jose Iglesias may soon reach a career crossroads – play baseball, or become a full-time pop music singer.

Iglesias, backed by his Mets teammates, performed his Omg song Friday night on the field after the Mets beat the Houston Astros.

Iglesias’s song has been playing at Citi Field after each Mets home run and in the clubhouse, but has previously not been commercially available. That changed Friday, when the song was finally released to streaming platforms.

The 34-year-old shouted “New York City! Let’s keep the party gooooooing!” as he took the field after the game. He was accompanied by dancers, and then the Mets team took the field, raising their arms at the chorus.

Iglesias the ballplayer has provided a spark to the Mets after being called up from the minors. The team is surging after a slow start, and is now over .500 for the...

15 Most Unpopular Netflix Stand-Up Specials
Image
In the world of streaming, Netflix still reigns supreme in producing stand-up comedy specials, some of which are considered the greatest of all time. However, much like everything else they distribute, they can't all be winners. Humor is subjective and while there isn't a comedian for every viewer, there is a viewer for every comedian.

Sometimes the best in the business falter in their latest project and other times, an individual's comedic talents aren't translated well to stand-up. Every so often, a comedy special will be so objectively unfunny, controversial, or downright offensive that nobody laughs.

Updated on January 15, 2024 by Hannah Grimes: We've revamped this article's angle to now be the most unpopular Netflix stand-up specials, updated it to fit current Cbr guidelines, and added a few more comedy specials to maybe avoid when you're looking for a few good laughs.

‘Toby’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Why Did Toby Kill Anand And His Men?
Image
Basil Alchalakkal’s latest action-thriller, Toby, chronicles the story of a mute man of the same name who practices a single religion: violence. Toby hails from a town that believes in taking care of the matter by whatever means necessary rather than involving the police. Not even the law enjoys any power in the region, as the place is a hotspot for all sorts of crime, including murder, robbery, and who knows what else. However, everything changes when Toby, the most vicious criminal of them all, adopts an ordinary girl named Jenny.

Spoilers Ahead

How Did Toby Find Jenny?

Father Iglesias stated that he’d met Toby when he was a teenager with violent tendencies, which was obvious given the years of abuse Toby had gone through. However, unlike others, the priest was sympathetic towards him and treated him with respect, something Toby had never experienced. Also, it was Iglesias...

A Mad Santa Is Coming For Tim Allen In The Santa Clauses Season 2 Trailer
Image
Even though we're not done with Halloween, Disney isn't wasting anytime digging back into the world of Santa Claus with a second season of the Disney+ original series "The Santa Clauses." Tim Allen is back as jolly old Saint Nick, and now he's focusing on turning all the happenings at the North Pole into a family business. Elizabeth Mitchell is still as supportive as ever as Mrs. Claus, Cal Calvin Claus (Austin Kane) is preparing to eventually become Santa Claus at some point with a little Santa training program, and Sandra Calvin Claus is helping out in the background by taking care of the reindeer and whatnot.

Of course, getting the North Pole in shape for Christmas isn't their biggest concern; there's trouble brewing in the form of another Santa Claus. Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family") is playing Magnus Antas or The Mad Santa. Apparently, he thinks Scott Calvin's version...

Unused Spider-Verse Villain Designs Prove 1 Deleted Scene Was A Mistake
Image
The unused villain designs for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should have been included in the film to showcase the expert craftsmanship of the animators and character designers. Including these cut villains in the third film would make the world of the Spider-Verse movie feel more lived in and build a fleshed-out universe, similar to the first two films. By including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's cut villains in Beyond the Spider-Verse, it would continue the vibrant and distinct feel of the universes visited while giving the fantastic designs their time in the spotlight.

An unused villain design for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proved that the film's cut villain scenes should have been left as part of the film. Initially, the first act of the Into the Spider-Verse sequel included a scene where Spot, the film's villain, entered Marvel Comics' The Bar With No Name. A safe haven...

The Women Who Became Human Barbies — And a Plastic Surgeon Who Wants to Make More of Them
Image
Created and marketed in 1959 as a teenage fashion doll alternative to baby dolls — and the star, of course, of the critically acclaimed box office blockbuster — Barbie has not only driven a cultural conversation on gender and feminism but also a desire to look like the doll itself. And now that’s more possible than ever (if not controversial), in almost every way except making human feet permanently arched.

Rachel Evans, a well-known Barbie lookalike in the U.K., has achieved her self-stated goal of being “a human doll … now I am Barbie 24/7,” as she states on her website, rachelevanstv.com, through 35 facial injection procedures. Wearing a pink and white plaid dress and hat akin to Barbie’s (Margot Robbie) traveling look in the movie, Evans explains her fixation in a Zoom interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying that she was bullied as a child, resulting in a broken nose: “I...
