Taylor Swift’s historic fourth Album of the Year win

After Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year win for “Midnights,” Noah claimed she was the first person to win Album of the Year four times. Why Is This Engineer-Mixer Among the Top 2024 Grammy Nominees?
Image
What do Usher’s Confessions, La Roux’s “In for the Kill,” and Taylor Swift’s Folklore have in common? They were all mixed by 45-time Grammy-nominated Serban Ghenea.

His first win was for Justin Timberlake’s Justified at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004, and he’s since gone on to mix every Swift record, beginning with 2012’s Red and including her four rerecordings (with the exception of 2020’s Evermore).

On last day of Grammys eligibility, Taylor Swift is the front-runner to win Album of the Year for the Fourth time
Image
The Grammys eligibility period came to an end on September 15, 2023, so we’ve now officially heard all the albums that qualify for consideration at the upcoming awards. But the front-runner to win Album of the Year according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users is a collection that came out at the very beginning of the season: Taylor Swift‘s “Midnights.” If we’re right, it would be an achievement unmatched by any artist in Grammy history.

Swift won Album of the Year for “Fearless” in 2010, “1989” in 2016 and “Folklore” in 2021. That’s the most wins ever in the category for a female artist, and it tied her as the most awarded artist of any gender. The only other performers with three Album of the Year trophies are Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. If Swift indeed wins a fourth she would stand alone among recording artists and tie engineers Tom Coyne,...

Three minutes and 47 seconds of sheer audio bliss, “Odyssey” is written, produced and performed by Beck and Phoenix, and mixed by Serban Ghenea. Beck and Thomas Mars nimbly trade lead vocals on the song’s verses, with the full cast joining to create the irresistible earworms of its choruses and each “Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah” singalong refrain. The result is two unmistakable sonic signatures combining to create something beyond the sum of its parts.

“Odyssey” is the spontaneous and perfect theme song for Beck and Phoenix’s eagerly anticipated co-headline Summer Odyssey tour. Produced by Live Nation, the 19-city run kicks off on Tuesday, August 1st in Seattle at Climate Pledge Arena,...

Ahead of their upcoming co-headlining “Summer Odyssey Tour,” Beck and Phoenix have shared a collaborative new single appropriately titled “Odyssey.” Check it out below.

“Odyssey” is a bubbly, über-electric track, where bass, synthesizers, and marimba combine for a vibrant summer theme song. Written and produced by Beck and Phoenix and mixed by Serban Ghenea, the track sees Beck and Thomas Mars trade verses before joining together for the chorus: “Somewhere/ We’ll fall into the ocean/ I’ll be there/ On an odyssey in the sun.”

The “Summer Odyssey Tour” begins August 1st and features support from Jenny Lewis, Sir Chloe, Japanese Breakfast, and Weyes Blood on select dates. Tickets are on sale here.

Phoenix’s last album was 2022’s Alpha Zulu, while earlier this year they shared a remix of the album cut “After Midnight” featuring Clairo. Back in February, Beck followed his 2019 album Hyperspace with the single “Thinking About You.

All the ways Taylor Swift could make Grammy history with ‘Midnights’
Image
It’s not an overstatement to say Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” is already one of the biggest albums of the 21st century. The album broke sales and streaming records, netting 1.57 million total album units in its first week based on its combined album sales, track sales, and online streams. That was actually Swift’s career-best first week despite being her 10th album. With that success, paired with the critical acclaim Swift’s been enjoying lately, it’s no wonder that the album is currently poised for some Grammy recognition, leading the odds right now on Gold Derby for Album of the Year, and being a heavy contender for other categories as well. And just like how the album broke sales records for Swift, it could break some Grammy records for her as well.

As of right now, “Midnights” is the obvious favorite to win Best Pop Vocal Album, especially considering...

Grammys 2024: Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ is the very, very, very early front-runner for Album of the Year
Image
The 2023 Grammys just took place on February 5, but the eligibility period for 2024 is already almost half over, so we launched our predictions for Album of the Year. There’s still a long way to go, but at this early stage things are looking good for Taylor Swift, whose “Midnights” is the early front-runner for the award, according to the combined predictions of hundreds of users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center so far. If it does win, it would set yet another record for the singer-songwriter.

“Midnights” has been a massive commercial success for Swift. It debuted with 1.5 million equivalent album units based on the combination of its traditional sales, individual track sales, and online streams. It made Swift the first artist ever to occupy all of the top 10 slots on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. And it will be promoted by an “Eras Tour” that...

Grammy Awards: Complete List of Winners

Beyoncé made the biggest news of the night Sunday at the 65th annual Grammy Awards.

The singer led the 2023 Grammy Awards nominations with a total of nine. Beyoncé’s career total of 88 nominations set a new record — one tied by her husband Jay-Z, who earned five noms this year. During the Premiere Ceremony, the pop star picked up two Grammys, breaking her 28-win tie with Quincy Jones. She also won best R&b song during the live broadcast, for “Cuff It,” tying late conductor Georg Solti’s 31-win record. She wasn’t there to accept that award, having experienced a very L.A. annoyance — being stuck in traffic — but arrived later during the ceremony, with host Trevor Noah presenting her the Grammy while she was seated in the audience. Later in the show, she won best dance/electronic album for Renaissance, beating Solti’s record, with a total of 32 career wins.

Adele
Adele vs Beyonce – the rematch! Our predictions for this year’s Grammy Awards
Adele
The 65th Grammy Awards take place on Sunday 5 February, with music fans preparing for the rematch of the century: Adele vs Beyoncé.

Both artists are up for Album of the Year, six years after Adele took home the top prize for her third record, 25. The win over Beyoncé’s critically adored surprise album Lemonade was highly controversial; Adele herself famously declared that Beyoncé deserved the prize during her acceptance speech.

This year, the British singer is competing with her record-obliterating fourth album, 30, released in 2021. A four-star review in The Independent praised the songs as “handsomely crafted ballads about love and its various agonies”, with Adele’s voice, as ever, the main draw. “Adele possesses that perfectly imperfect voice, gargantuan and frail all at once,” critic Annabel Nugent wrote. “It’s epic without resorting to showy, melismatic affectations. It yawns into unexpected shapes and makes intonation fun.”

Beyoncé, meanwhile, surprised fans...

6 Grammy records and milestones achieved in 2022
Image
The 2022 Grammys were filled with quite a number of surprising wins, though still a lot of predictable ones. But much like every year, a lot of stars managed to earn their place in Grammy history with fascinating and record-breaking wins. Let’s take a look at a few.

SEETop 4 lessons we learned from Grammys 2022 “Leave The Door Open”

Songwriter and producer Dernst Emile II, also known as D’Mile, made history as the first person to win Song of the Year back-to-back. Emile won last year for his contributions to H.E.R.’s “I Can’t Breathe,” a win that was quickly followed by an Oscar for another H.E.R. collaboration: “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.” This year D’Mile won for his work on Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open,” for which he also took home a Record of the Year Grammy as a producer...

Jon Batiste
2022 Grammy Awards: Jon Batiste Wins Album of the Year for ‘We Are’ (Complete Winners List)
Jon Batiste
The 2022 Grammy Awards broadcast wrapped up with an upset victory of sorts, with Jon Batiste beating out the likes of Taylor Swift and Kanye west to take home Album of the Year for his excellent “We Are.”

That was his fifth win of the night, following four wins during the “Premiere Ceremony,” where all of the awards not deemed cool enough for television were handed out, hosted by the always wonderful Levar Burton.

Batiste also accomplished a rather ignominious milestone for the Grammy Awards themselves: He’s the first Black artist to win Album of the Year since Herbie Hancock back in 2008. You read that right: It’s literally been 14 years and 3 presidents since the Academy recognized the work of Black artists with this honor. And in case you’re wondering, the only nonwhite artist to win Best Album during that time was Bruno Mars in 2018.

Speaking of Mars, Batiste...

5 artists who could make Grammys history in 2022: Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga …
Image
With the Grammy eligibility period for the 2022 ceremony more than halfway done already, let’s consider which artists are looking for more than just an award. This year we saw Beyoncé break the all-time record for most Grammy wins by a female artist, Taylor Swift nab a record-breaking third Album of the Year win, and key noms and wins for Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, and Jacob Collier. Who’s poised to break more records and make more history next year?

SEE2022 Grammy predictions: Song of the Year Bruno Mars’s general field dominance again?

With his highly anticipated album alongside Anderson Paak as the super duo Silk Sonic, Bruno Mars could make history in a couple of ways. First off, an Album of the Year win for “An Evening With Silk Sonic” would be Mars’ third Album of the Year win (he previously won as a producer on Adele...

Taylor Swift Finally Reveals the Identity of Her Folklore Collaborator, William Bowery
Image
The release of Taylor Swift's album Folklore in July caused a lot of chatter about her introspective lyrics, but it also sparked a new mystery: who is William Bowery?

On Swift's Instagram announcement prior to releasing Folklore, she credited several people who helped make it happen. For the most part, it was recognizable names: Aaron Dessner, Bon Iver, and Jack Antonoff, plus the sound team of Laura Sisk, Jon Low, and Serban Ghenea, and photographer Beth Garrabrant. Among those names, though, she also dedicated a line to "William Bowery (who co-wrote two [songs] with me)." Interestingly enough, he's not the only name who doesn't have a tagged Instagram account in Swift's post - Sisk, Low, and Ghenea also are all untagged.

While many fans theorized who it could be following the album's release, Swift put all the rumors to rest when she released her new Disney+ film, Folklore: the Long Pond Studio Sessions,...

Taylor Swift’s New ‘folklore’ Album Is Scoring Legendary Sales In Its Early Run
Image
Update: Taylor Swift’s new folklore album has had a fabled sales beginning.

Since its Thursday release, the album surpassed 1.3 million global sales in its first twenty-four hours, according to her Republic Records label.

Beyond that, folklore also dominated on the global streaming platforms. Spotify said Swift’s total of 79.4 million streams is a new record for an album by a female artist. Apple Music’s total of 35.47 million is a new high for a pop album.

That means the album will easily debut at No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart, and will have the best showing since Swift’s Lover album came out in 2019.

Final first-week numbers will not be available until a week from Monday.

Earlier: In a perfect world, Taylor Swift would be out on the road doing a stadium tour this summer. As we all know, it’s not a perfect world.

But sometimes when things don’t go as planned,...
