Netflix has officially unveiled the first look at the upcoming My Oxford Year, and confirmed the rom-com will premiere on Aug. 1, per Tudum.

Both actors have proven their leading skills in previous Netflix titles. Their upcoming rom-com is an adaptation of Julia Whelan's 2018 novel of the same name. Autumn in New York's Allison Burnett and My Fault: London's Melissa Osborne adapted the screenplay for the upcoming rom-com,...

Sofia Carson's New Romantic Comedy Is Dominating Netflix's Top Charts
Image
A new romantic comedy is taking over the Netflix charts, despite some less than stellar reviews. The new film is written and directed by Adam Brooks, whose rom-com bonafides are not in question. The director has previously written and directed 2008's "Definitely, Maybe" and co-written "Wimbledon" (2004) and "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" (2004). This time, Brooks has adapted Lori Nelson Spielman's novel "The Life List" for Netflix, and audiences seem to be loving it.

The film stars Sofia Carson, who is fast becoming a Netflix rom-com queen having starred in 2022's "Purple Hearts" and recently appeared in the "Die Hard"-like Netflix Christmas thriller "Carry On." Carson plays Alex Rose, whose mother, Elizabeth (Connie Britton), passes away. Afterwards, Alex discovers that Elizabeth changed her will so that her daughter must complete certain tasks in order to get her inheritance. While this might sound like some sort of sadistic game orchestrated from beyond the grave,...

Netflix’s ‘The Life List’ Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happens To Alex Rose And Brad?
Image
Grief is a parasite that sits in a mourner’s chest until they actively release it into the ether. Ask anyone who has grieved a loved one, and most will tell you it never really leaves. This phenomenon plays out in films in different forms: in a thriller (Searching), the grief manifests itself in the protagonist’s frenzied search for a reason for their loss; in an action film (John Wick), it breeds a vengeance in the protagonist, who succumbs to violence to release their grief; and in a romance (P.S. I Love You), it becomes a silent spectator to the insurmountable change wrought in the lead who is left behind. Transformation, however, is an inevitable outcome that comes to define the grieving protagonist. In recent years of global uncertainty in the aftermath of the pandemic, shows like Ricky Gervais’s Afterlife, Dead to Me, and Fleabag have charted new...

Netflix's New Drama About a Mother-Daughter Bond Becomes a Hit Despite Poor Reviews
Image
Netflix has been focusing on big-budget productions, with action and visual effects-filled projects topping the charts. However, the streaming giant has proven an interest in rom-coms and dramas, as well.

In recent months, Netflix has released several memorable titles, whether shows like Kristen Bell and Adam Brody's Nobody Wants This and Kate Hudson's comedy Running Point, or romantic films like Scott Foley's Italian dream getaway La Dolce Villa. Although the streamer has seen a lot of interest in big-budget productions like The Electric State, the interest in dramas and rom-coms is obvious. That is now highlighted by its latest release, The Life List, which topped the charts the past week, per Tudum.

The Life List premiered on Netflix on Mar. 28, and it had two full days to make an impression on the week between Mar. 24 and 30. An impression it did because the romantic drama topped the charts...

Sofia Carson on The Life List, Connecting with Alex and Connie Britton
Image
Sometimes, moms really do know best. That’s true not only for Sofia Carson’s character in the upcoming film The Life List, but also in real life.

Shortly after Purple Hearts came out in 2022, Carson was in a meeting and received an email with the subject line “The Life List.” The actress and producer knew it was a script, but she didn’t have time to read it just then. A few minutes later, she got a text from her mom that said, “Stop whatever you’re doing and read this script.” She’s sure glad she did.

Carson soon poured herself into The Life List’s Alex Rose, a young woman who doesn’t know how to get out of the rut she’s stuck in. And the only person who can push her to become who she’s meant to be is the one she just lost — her mother,...

“The Life List”: Sofia Carson in a Journey of Self-Discovery
Image
Sofia Carson takes center stage in “The Life Lists,” a movie that aims to tug at the heartstrings from the get-go, focusing all its emotional power on Carson and her character’s personal journey.

“The Life List” falls into the category of self-discovery films that audiences tend to love and critics, as a rule, often tear apart without much mercy. Directed by Adam Brooks, who also penned the screenplay, “The Life List” is based on the novel of the same name by Lori Nelson Spielman. The film follows Alex Rose (Carson), a woman in her thirties who finds herself at a crossroads, forced to reassess the direction of her life when she inherits an unusual task from her late mother: completing a “life list” she wrote when she was 13 years old.

'The Life List' Review: Rom-Com Enchants Despite Shaky Execution
Image
Family secrets, a love triangle, and self-discovery are just part of the creative tapestry in The Life List, an endearing tale full of “aw shucks” that’s designed to warm hearts. It will, even though the film struggles to land in any one genre. It’s a rom-com, it's a tragic family drama, it’s a mission-driven story with a goal in mind, it’s a coming-of-age story, it’s a "yas queen" girlboss flick, it's… not quite sure what it is. It’s all that and filled with attractive actors, so there's great eye candy all around. And there’s Connie Britton, playing a matriarch determined to make sure her daughter gets her life on track. This film is loaded with warm fuzzies, and the ever-reliable Britton is a believable emotional boost, adding an extra touch of warmth in a story already overflowing with it.

The Life List Review – Love, Loss, and a List: A Heartwarming, if Imperfect, Drama
Image
While I try to go into everything with an open mind, I will admit that The Life List was not exactly something I was looking forward to. The gimmicky premise and mid-level production value gave the impression that this would be yet another forgettable, aggressively mediocre Netflix rom com to add to the disturbingly large pile of them produced by the streamer.

The actual movie is thankfully not that. To even call The Life List a romantic comedy would be something of a misnomer, as it’s closer to a comedy drama than anything else and it performs admirably at being exactly that. Yet at the same time, it still feels like it’s missing something to truly elevate it from good to great.

The plot

After her mother’s death, Alex Rose, played by Sofia Carson, is given a decidedly unconventional form of inheritance: a mission to complete every...

The Life List Ending Explained: Sofia Carson, Connie Britton on their Life-Affirming Rom-Dram
Image
The Life List finds Alex Rose (Sofia Carson) embarking on a slightly unconventional mission for a grown woman: In order to gain access to a mystery inheritance left by her mom, she has to complete a list of life goals she cooked up in bubbly handwriting when she was a 13-year-old girl.

Let’s back up. When Alex’s mom Elizabeth (Connie Britton), terminally ill with cancer, grows concerned that Alex has settled and given up on her dreams, she sets out to ensure that this won’t continue after she dies. In her will, Elizabeth stipulates that only afterAlex has completed her childhood life list can she earn what she’s been bequeathed — and she only has until the new year to do so.

Thus begins Alex’s at times funny, at times painful, quest of checking off the list: teaching young students at a women’s shelter, getting a tattoo,...

'The Life List' Actors Get Romantic About Sofia Carson
Image
Netflix is about to have another romantic hit on its hands with The Life List, which premieres March 28, 2025, and seems to tick all the boxes that viewers love. It's also a surprisingly authentic movie with some great characters, led by Sofia Carson as Alex Rose, a woman adrift in a pre-mid-life crisis of sorts. When her mother (played by Connie Britton) dies, she leads Alex on an existential scavenger hunt of sorts, pushing her to complete a list of goals the young woman set for herself when she was 13. Along the way, she develops feelings for the lawyer tasked with her mother's will and a doctor she meets at her new job. MovieWeb spoke with Allen and de Souza about the film and their shared love interest, Sofia Carson's Alex Rose.

Netflix is adding 8 movies and series this week
Image
Netflix is taking it easy on us this week, as they're only adding eight new shows this week. Maybe the old adage is right after all: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a made-for-streaming rom-com. I'm pretty sure that's it.

Reality shows, true crime stories, stand-up comedy - they're all standard fare for your favorite streaming service. Unless they're paying top dollar for someone like Dave Chapelle, all of these shows cost quite a bit less than, say, a $320 million critical disaster that viewers love. For what it's worth, I think the critics were primed to hate the movie before they saw the first minute.

So that's exactly what we're getting this week. There's also a new Harlan Coben adaptation, a light and semi-breezy rom-com, and a new show that Bridgerton fans will absolutely want to check out. Best of all - at least to me...

The Life List looks like delicious and quirky fun on Netflix
Image
Sofia Carson is becoming a Netflix star. After being brilliant in 2024's thriller, Carry-On, she will now turn lead in a new Netflix movie called The Life List. The story revolves around a woman who is set on a journey by her mother to re-access her life. The twist is that Carson's character (Alex Rose) is given a new DVD each time she goes about completing tasks on her bucket list.

Mind you, at least some of the bucket list was created when Alex was a child, so some of what she has to do might be something she would never do as an adult. The list includes participating in an open mic night, playing basketball in a one-on-one game, and teaching at a women's shelter. The truth is that the film is not a series of episodes of Alex working her way down the list.

This is more about...

Bone Lake Review: Never Trust an Airbnb Booking Error #FantasticFest
Bone Lake isn’t just a fun name. For this slow-burn psychological thriller, it’s a promise. Following two couples stuck together in a lavish rental home after a booking error, the husbands jokingly argue whether the lake is named after a local Urban Legend about a serial killer or a guarantee that everyone who stays gets laid. But Bone Lake director Mercedes Bryce-Morgan (Spoonful of Sugar) thankfully asks: Why not both?

Directing from a screenplay by Joshua Friedlander (Holly Slept Over), Mercedes Bryce Morgan’s new thriller deals with the messy, complicated issues that sour long term relationships.
