Crime dramas typically do everything they can to throw the audience off the trail of the story's mystery, and sometimes supernatural or surreal elements come into play because of this. Making the audience question what's real and what's imagined is a great way to build unreliable narrators and a sense of dread throughout the episodes. Sometimes, these aspects of the plot can get so outlandish that the series becomes almost absurdist. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing since this distinguishes the show from the competition. There is no shortage of supernatural series and crime dramas out there.
There are many underrated recent detective TV shows that use these elements to make their stories unforgettable since a surreal tone sets apart a thriller series. One of the most underappreciated aspects of filmmaking is the casting process. Its not as simple as slapping a big-name actor into a random story. An ensemble cast can absolutely make or break a film. Its incredibly important for filmmakers to pick the right people for the job.
In 2026, the Academy Awards will finally recognize this vital part of Hollywood with its own award category. Taking a look back, many films of the past decade deserve to be recognized for their incredible achievements in casting.

Like Qasim Basir’s last feature, “A Boy. A Girl. A Dream,” his new “To Live & Die and Live” is a questing mood piece whose characters roam a city’s highlife in a fruitless search for inner peace. Here the setting is Detroit, but the protagonist a successful filmmaker taking a forced yet needed sabbatical from the pressures of that prior film’s Los Angeles. The issues he’s dragged with him are hardly alleviated by this return to home turf, however.
As before, the writer-director’s elliptical narrative approach leaves a lot of unanswered questions. But the frustration they generate is again outweighed by the insight afforded into upwardly mobile (and in this case Muslim) African American communities, as well as the melancholy poetical drift of his cinematic style.
Burly, bearded Muhammad Abdullah (Amin Joseph) is a prodigal son whose return to Motor City should be a victory lap.

"In the end, defend." Orion Pictures has released the first trailer for a horror film titled The Domestics, which seems to borrow plenty from The Purge. Here's the pitch for this one: in a terrifying post-apocalyptic world inhabited by gangs divided into deadly factions, a husband & wife race desperately across the country in search of safety. Kate Bosworth and Tyler Hoechlin star, with Sonoya Mizuno, Lance Reddick, David Dastmalchian, Dana Gourrier, Laura Cayouette, Lance E. Nichols, and Jeff Chase. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm a bit tired of these brutal horror films where everyone is out to murder and torture each other. Give me something more original than that, please. If that is your thing, have at it. Here's the first official trailer (+ new poster) for Mike P. Nelson's The Domestics, direct from YouTube: In a terrifying post-apocalyptic world inhabited by gangs divided into deadly factions,...

MGM is re-launching Orion Classics and has named Mike P. Nelson’s thriller The Domestics starring Kate Bosworth and Tyler Hoechlin (Everybody Wants Some!!) as its first release as the studio says it will focus on multiplatform and specialized releases and acquisitions. The label that is rising from the ashes will release eight to 10 films per year across genres, with The Domestics hitting theaters June 28 and then going to VOD and digital the following day.
The move follows last year’s resurrection of the Orion label and naming of John Hegeman as its president. Orion Classics will be run day to day by Sam Wollman, MGM’s Svp Acquisitions; he will work in conjunction with Hegeman and MGM President of Worldwide Television and Acquisitions Chris Ottinger. Orion Pictures’ first film, Every Day, was released into theaters in February and grossed $6.1M.

"As long as my son is in that car, I will not stop! Wherever you go, I will be right behind you!" Another new trailer has debuted for the kidnapping action thriller titled Kidnap. The film stars Halle Berry as a passionate mother who stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son. This movie was originally supposed to open last December, but got pushed back with the Relativity fiasco. Now it's finally opening in August of this year for those still curious. This new trailer is a rehash of the first trailer with most of the same footage, but different edits. Also starring Sage Correa, Lew Temple, Dana Gourrier, Christopher Berry, and Chris McGinn. I like the intensity of these trailers, it's a good sell, I just hope the movie is worth the wait. "You took the wrong kid!" Holy crap! Relativity Studios has debuted a wild trailer for the kidnapper thriller titled – yes, this straightforward – Kidnap. The film stars Halle Berry as a passionate mother who stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son. This is an odd trailer because it spends so much time setting up the first act of the film, then flashes a few glimpses of what happens later, but relies mostly on the fear and intense emotions of having a child taken. Will it be any good? Hard to tell. Also starring Sage Correa, Lew Temple, Dana Gourrier, Christopher Berry and Chris McGinn. I'm not sure about this - take a look. Did Quentin Tarantino stumble this time out? His tale of western killers sharing a snowbound cabin builds almost zero suspense, and the verbal excess and violent grossness lack Tarantino's usual clever, wickedly funny edge. And 70mm cooped up in a dim interior? It's A Long Day's Journey into Lincoln Logs. Totally dig Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ennio Morricone, though. While Warner Bros. is expected to dominate the box office with their superhero adventure Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opening on March 25, they also have another movie debuting one week earlier, the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special. Warner Bros. released a new trailer today, which showcases the ensemble cast including Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver and Sam Shepard. Midnight Special is the latest from writer-director Jeff Nichols, who earned critical acclaim for his films Take Shelter and Mud.
Midnight Special is a provocative, genre-defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human, following a father, Roy (Michael Shannon), who goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), a boy with mysterious powers that even Roy himself cannot comprehend. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government.

As promised, I’m back writing again about filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s eighth cinematic outing this week. Whenever a new movie of his opens, it’s really an event, so this is no exception. Of late, Tarantino has been getting the attention of the Academy, so this is definitely a high profile release. Buzz had been steadily building for months now, with folks especially excited for the 70mm roadshow version being unveiled in select theaters. I’ve seen and dug the flick a great deal, so it’s a pleasure to be able to speak more about how good this film is. I praised Bruce Dern’s work in it a few days ago, but now I’m gushing over the whole thing, as well as speculating about its Oscar prospects. Once again, this is Tarantino’s eight film, centering on a group of less than savory characters convening on a single location,...

On behalf of The Weinstein Company, we are excited to share a new featurette on Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), from their highly anticipated film, The Hateful Eight. Director Quentin Tarantino continues his long relationship with the actor, which started in 1994, when the pair first came together for Pulp Fiction. Samuel L. Jackson and Quentin Tarantino have gone onto make six films together. And this may be their most ambitious work to date.
Set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as "The Hangman," will bring Domergue to justice. There are many, many things to like about Quentin Tarantino’s new film The Hateful Eight. A great deal of them are being talked about all throughout the industry by various writers, but one aspect of Tarantino’s eighth outing is being woefully neglected. What is that? Well, the supporting turn by Bruce Dern, of course. Is it the flashiest in the movie? No, but that’s not the point. Dern is one of the great character actors of the last half century, and seeing him really get to dive into a role like this and work with Tarantino is something special. In a flick that’s rarely understated, they manage something fairly subtle, so I figured that was worth appreciating a bit today. The film opens this week, so it makes perfect sense. For those unaware, this is, ironically enough, Tarantino film number eight, and centers around a group...

For a Few Hours More: Tarantino’s Flamboyant Style Stamped onto a Salami Western
Quentin Tarantino returns with his latest feature, The Hateful Eight, another retro re-hash of period following the revenge fantasies of WWII set Inglourious Basterds (2009) and the pre-Civil War American Deep South in Django Unchained (2012). Returning to the inspirational pool of the Spaghetti Western for his latest concoction, Tarantino showcases another tale of violence, greed, and betrayal amongst marauders and peripheral bounty hunters in post-Civil War Wyoming. Utilizing his particular brand of characterization, a fine borderline of catchy kitsch and inspired homage, Tarantino resurrects 70mm Panavision, a film stock twice as wide as 35mm stock, and the title represents the widest theatrical release the format has seen in over twenty years. The presentation alone is enough to inspire interest for cineastes, but it arrives with a high bar of comparison considering titles like Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and...

Nicolas Cage! *The Internet cheers*. Alright, now we have that over and done with, let’s get down to the review…
In the aftermath of the Bp oil spill, an idealistic but imperfect New Orleans politician (Nicolas Cage) finds his plans of restoration unravelling as his own life becomes contaminated with corruption, scandal and deceit.
I am going to leap right into the meat of it here and say that The Runner is not a happy film. If you’re one of those people who like a happy ending and for everything to be wrapped up at least a little bit by the end, you definitely shouldn’t go for this film. It has quite a dark and depressing finish.

On Christmas Day, director Quentin Tarantino will roll out his eighth feature film, The Hateful Eight, in a limited "roadshow" presentation in 70mm. Fans will have two weeks to see this revenge Western in 70mm, before it debuts nationwide with digital projection on January 8. Fandango has released a seven-minute featurette that explains the importance of this 70mm presentation, and offers some history on the roadshow format, which hasn't been used for years.
One advantage of seeing the 70 mm roadshow is fans will get a longer cut of the movie than they'd see in the nationwide release. Quentin Tarantino revealed last month that the 70mm version will include six minutes of extra footage, a trademark of classic roadshow presentations such as Gone With the Wind, Ben-Hur and many more. We also hear from Samuel L. Jackson, who explains that the 70mm presentation gives viewers an image that is twice as large as a traditional movie.

Earlier today, a new poster was released from this revenge Western, and now we have even more details about the film's soundtrack. Film Music Reporter is reporting that Decca Records is releasing the soundtrack on December 18, with 28 tracks that includes music from composer Ennio Morricone and songs from The White Stripes, Roy Orbison and David Hess.
The soundtrack will include David Hess' Now You're All Alone from The Last House on the Left soundtrack, The White Stripes song Apple Blossom and Roy Orbison's There Won't Be Many Coming Home, which is from the 1967 movie The Fastest Guitar Alive, where the singer made his first and only film appearance.

The Weinstein Company has just released a brand new poster for their highly anticipated film, The Hateful Eight , written and directed by Quentin Tarantino! And in true Tarantino form, this latest theatrical one-sheet pays homage to the 70s thrillers and disaster films that the director loves. The top half of the poster shows us a scene from the climactic ending, with Samuel L. Jackson walking into a gun fight, weapons drawn. While the bottom half shows us images of each actor in this all-star cast. This was the typical style utilized in the 70s for any epic that held multiple marquee names. It's a fun throwback that everyone, including the Police, might enjoy!

The third trailer for The Hateful Eight arrives amidst much controversy, following anti-police statements made by Quentin Tarantino, which resulted in a boycott against the director, his movies, and the upcoming release of his latest Western. This new full-length sneak peek offers every incentive as to why you should still seek out his thrilling Old West tale, in select theaters this Christmas. It also teases the growing rivalry between characters played by Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell as they are locked up with strangers during a freezing blizzard.
