Marvel's Mightiest Heroes Travel Back In Time For Jms' 1776 Series Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary
Image
Ahead of America's 250th anniversary, Marvel Comics will pay tribute to the country's founding this November in 1776, a five-issue limited series written by legendary Amazing Spider-Man and Thor writer J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by superstar artists Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill.

The series presents a one-of-a-kind team-up as a band of Marvel superheroes travels to the dawn of the American Revolution, where they join forces with the real-life historical figures like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams to stop history from being rewritten.

In what Marvel Comics is billing as "an inspirational saga that blends superhero storytelling with America's revolutionary past," these heroes of yesterday and today must ensure pivotal moments remain intact to safeguard both America's legacy and their existence. Here's the official description of 1776:

Revolutionary Warriors, Assemble!

Spider-man: Brand New Day Set Photos/Videos Finally Reveal Spidey's New Mask And His Back Logo
Image
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shooting in Glasgow, Scotland, and we finally have a first look at the wall-crawler's new mask. Many fans had expressed a desire to see a design inspired by artists like Mark Bagley and Todd McFarlane, but this is 100% Steve Ditko/John Romita Sr.

With the new suit borrowing heavily from those worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home and their respective solo outings, it's not overly surprising that Peter #1's mask has remained largely the same (though the lenses do look larger in some shots).

While this homemade suit isn't outfitted with Stark Tech, we'd bet on those lenses still moving so that Tom Holland's web-slinger can express emotion. With a significantly bigger design, that might have been trickier to achieve in a believable way.

Whether we'll get to see characters like The Punisher and Scorpion on Spider-Man:...

Deadpool/Batman variant covers look as amazing as you would expect
Image
Marvel has revealed the variant covers for Deadpool/Batman, which goes on sale in November.

As you can see in the link above, one of the variant covers clearly parodies Todd McFarlane’s famous cover of The Incredible Hulk No. 340, which showed a snarling Wolverine with the Hulk’s reflection in his claws, but this time, we see a furious Batman with the reflection of Deadpool in his Batarangs. The excellent cover was drawn by Greg Capullo, and it will certainly be a fine addition to your collection.

Another one of the other variant covers, which was drawn by Skottie Young, shows a humorous encounter between Batman and Deadpool on the rooftops above Gotham City, while Mark Bagley provided a foil variant cover showing Batman and Deadpool racing towards the Joker in order to quash whatever evil scheme the Clown Prince of Crime has planned. And the excellent standard cover...

Only One Spider-Man Adaptation Has Gotten Mary Jane Watson Right
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Spider-Man is the most famous "nerd" superhero, so it's extra funny that Peter Parker has also had so many girlfriends. But there's one woman who always comes back: Mary Jane Watson. Mj's been part of Spider-Man's world since her first on-panel appearance in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #42, by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. It took a while for her and Peter to truly get together, but Mj's the girl Peter Parker eventually married, no matter what Marvel Comics editorial has been saying since the controversial arc "One More Day."

Mary Jane is so famous as the Spider-Man love interest that a lot of adaptations skip right to her, like the 1994 "Spider-Man" cartoon produced by John Semper, Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic reboot, and the Sam Raimi "Spider-Man" films, for instance. But to use...

Marvel Officially Unveils a New Battleworld Continuity, And MCU Fans Need to See This
Image
In a shock move, Marvel has revealed new series Battleworld, putting a new spin on the Avengers' Secret Wars concept. The series will hurl together fragments of different realities from across the multiverse, creating a new world where heroes and villains are locked in a series of battles for survival.

This series is a major clue as to how the MCU will handle multiple versions of reality smashing together in Secret Wars.

The concept is an echo of 1984's Secret Wars, where the all-powerful Beyonder created a Battleworld as the setting for a contest between Marvel's heroes and villains, with Doctor Doom accomplishing something similar in 2015's Secret Wars event. Now, a new Battleworld has been formed with its own heroes from across Marvel's past and present comics.

The new series will include multiversal characters including King Thor, the Maestro Hulk and the original Star Brand of the New Universe...

Marvel Comics Retitles Upcoming New Thunderbolts* Series New Avengers Following Movie's Release

Back in March, Marvel Comics announced that a new era for the Thunderbolts would begin this June with Sam Humphries and Ton Lima's New Thunderbolts* comic book series.

Marvel's Thunderbolts Isn't Really A Thunderbolts Movie (And That's Disappointing)
Image
This post contains spoilers for Marvel's "Thunderbolts*."

After several years of wondering what Marvel's newest team was going to look like, we need no longer wonder as "Thunderbolts*" is in theaters as we speak. Director Jake Schreier has brought the team to life on the big screen to bring Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a close ... kind of. What did that asterisk in the film's title mean, exactly? While this may be a bit of an oversimplification, it essentially meant we weren't watching a movie about the Thunderbolts at all.

As we come to learn by the end of "Thunderbolts*," that asterisk existed because the team in the movie was actually introduced to the world as the New Avengers. That's right! Marvel pulled a fast one on us. The team consisting of Yelena Belova, Ghost, John Walker, Red Guardian, and Bucky Barnes is the New Avengers and not the Thunderbolts.

Thunderbolts* review: A hilarious and unusual superhero film, but an ensemble it isn’t
Image
What happens when a bunch of baddies with red in their ledger get thrown together to save the world? You get Thunderbolts*. The Marvel Cinematic Universe film is not your average fare — yes, there are action scenes, and fights, and plenty of banter, but Thunderbolts* goes beyond that to look at the dark side of being a superhero. The stakes are high, but the stakes are also personal.

The film closes out Phase 5 of the MCU, and takes place after the events of Captain America: Brave New World, all while carrying on plot threads from both Black Widow and Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Thunderbolts* ponders the question: in a world that no longer has the Avengers, who does humanity turn to in their hour of need?

Who are the Thunderbolts*?

Jake Schreier makes his MCU directing debut with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo.

Fantastic Four to Cross Over With Gargoyles
Image
As the Fantastic Four prepare themselves for their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in July, they have been having a bigger presence in the overall comic book zeitgeist, and a major example of this will be first teased on Free Comic Book Day, as Dynamite will be releasing aGargoyles/Fantastic Four crossover special in October, with the project teased in Dynamite's offering for this year's Free Comic Book Day on May 3, Gargoyles: Demona #0.

Based on the classic 1990s animated series, Gargoyles was the first title in Dynamite's popular series of Disney-related comic books, and now Dynamite is celebrating the success of that series by having the Manhattan Clan of the Gargoyles team up with Another family, in this case, Marvel's most famous family, the Fantastic Four, in a special one-shot crossover issue in October, written by Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman, artist George Kambadais, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry, the original...

Neil Patrick Harris Voiced Spider-Man In A Forgotten Animated MTV Series
Image
"Spider-Man" is one of the most popular superheroes of all time, and one that is quite versatile when it comes to adaptations. We've had several "Spider-Man" shows and movies, from live-action to animation and video games, each with a unique take, visual style, and tone. Tom Holland's boyish Peter Parker is vastly different from Jake Johnson's jaded Peter B. Parker and Tobey Maguire's tragic, mopey version of the character (which audiences voted as the single best live-action Peter Parker).

Even in animation, we've seen many different interpretations from voice actors across games, TV, and film, portraying Peter as an older man, a newcomer just getting started with his powers, or an established hero. Though there have been many animated "Spider-Man" TV shows, each with their own fans and defenders, one show is usually left out of the conversation — MTV's "Spider-Man: The New Animated Series."

This was a wild experiment.

Why Gwen Stacy Died In Marvel's Spider-Man Comics, Explained
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It's been said that everyone dies twice: the second is when someone says your name for the last time. Gwen Stacy has never died that second death. Since "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" ran in "The Amazing Spider-Man" issues #121-122 back in 1973, Marvel will not let Peter Parker (or their readers) forget about his lost love, taken from him by Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin.

For the recent 52nd anniversary of Gwen's murder, Marvel shared an animated short (produced by Wild Comet Media and Apus Studio) re-enacting the story:

Jeff Trammell, creator of "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man," has also confirmed that Gwen will be coming in the show's in-production second season. That news has Spidey fans tingling with excitement. What doesn't is the news that Marvel apparently plans to resurrect Gwen Stacy.

Godzilla's rampage across the Marvel Universe kicks off next week in Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 by Ryan North and John Romita Jr., the first of six one-shots pitting the King of the Monsters against Marvel's most iconic superheroes.

The one-shots are said to be just the beginning of an exciting new collaboration between Marvel Comics and Toho International, the Japanese studio's U.S.-based subsidiary that has brought global sensation Godzilla to life, and will conclude in July with Godzilla vs. Thor #1 by legendary Thor scribe Jason Aaron and acclaimed artist Aaron Kuder.

These stories take place across various eras of both Marvel Comics and Godzilla storytelling, starting with Marvel's First Family in the Silver Age before Godzilla takes on the Jade Giant in a '70s-inspired slugfest with the strongest there is in the pages of Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 by Gerry Duggan and Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Godzilla vs. Thor Is Coming, Marking Marvel's Next Kaiju Crossover

The Marvel Universe is about to feature one of its most electrifying battles to date. Marvel has officially announced Godzilla vs. Thor #1, a climactic entry in the Godzilla vs. Marvel series, written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Aaron Kuder. Following massive clashes with Marvel’s greatest heroes, Godzilla is now facing his most powerful opponent yet.

The issue will see Godzilla imbued with the ancient power of The Beast—a terrifying force granted by The Hand. With Midgard at risk, Thor must confront the kaiju in what looks to be one of Marvel’s most shocking showdowns yet.

‘Godzilla vs. Thor’ #1 Thunders Into Comic Shops This July: Featuring 5 Covers
Image
Comic fans, get ready for something big. On July 2, a wild showdown hits the shelves with ‘Godzilla vs. Thor’ #1. This isn’t just any crossover—it’s the final piece of the Godzilla vs. Marvel series, wrapping up a run that’s already pitted the King of the Monsters against Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Avengers.

This time, Thor, the God of Thunder, steps up to face a Godzilla powered up by The Hand. They’ve turned the iconic beast into something even fiercer, calling it ‘The Beast.’ Picture this—massive claws, white eyes glowing, and a hammer-wielding god trying to protect Midgard from total chaos. It’s going to be loud, and it’s going to be messy.

The creative team behind this is no joke. Jason Aaron, who’s been writing Thor for years, teams up with artist Aaron Kuder, known for his work on ‘Daredevil.’ They...

Ahead of Their MCU Debut, Marvel Is Relaunching Thunderbolts* In a Big Way
Image
A new line-up of Thunderbolts* is getting ready to team up ahead of their highly anticipated MCU debut, revamping the roster in a big way with shocking additions. The Winter Soldier and Black Widow are forming a new team of anti-heroes and former villains to take on a dangerous threat, and this cast is sure to pack a serious punch as the series kicks off later this year.

Marvel Comics has just announced New Thunderbolts*, an exciting new comic that re-invents the chaotic crew with an unexpected cast of characters. Written by Sam Humphries with art by Ton Lima, this series will see the Thunderbolts joining forces to face off against seemingly unbeatable copies of the Illuminati.

The updated roster features the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Wolverine, Carnage, Clea, Namor, and the Hulk. While this line-up is definitely an unlikely one, these powerhouses will need to work together if they...

Thunderbolts*: Marvel Breaks Out Some Big Guns For Its New Comic Book Line-Up
Image
Ahead of the release of Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* movie this May, Marvel Comics has announced a new ongoing series from writer Sam Humphries and artist Ton Lima, and they've really called in some big guns to pad out this roster.

Though the comic title has kept the movie's mysterious (though maybe not quite some much after the last trailer) asterisk, Bucky Barnes is the only character who will appear on the MCU team. The rest of the squad consists of Black Widow, Carnage, The Hulk, Clea, Wolverine, and Namor.

Yeah... If we're a supervillain, we are not rushing to tangle with this team.

According to Marvel.com's synopsis, the new series "kicks off when Bucky Barnes and Black Widow discover a monumental threat to the Marvel Universe and recruit a group of individuals who will Hold Nothing Back! It’s a radical lineup—even by Thunderbolts standards—that ushers in...

New Thunderbolts Assemble: Marvel’s Deadliest Team Just Got Even Wilder!
Image
This June, Marvel is launching a brand-new Thunderbolts comic series. Written by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Ton Lima, New Thunderbolts will feature some of the most powerful and unpredictable characters in the Marvel Universe.

The Thunderbolts have always been a team of unlikely allies—reformed villains, antiheroes, and mercenaries who take on dangerous missions that others won’t. Now, Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier) and Black Widow are putting together a new squad to face a massive threat.

The new team includes The Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Carnage, The Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Wolverine. Each of them is a dangerous loner, but they must work together to stop evil duplicates of the Illuminati. These copies are just as powerful as the originals, and if they succeed, the world is in serious trouble.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 Casts A Stranger Things Star – Let's Guess Which Marvel Character She's Playing
Image
Deadline reports that Sadie Sink has joined the cast of Tom Holland's upcoming fourth Spider-Man film. Sink is a rising star, having broke out with her role as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things." She's since gone on to make notable appearances in the "Fear Street" films and play a supporting part in Darren Aronofsky's Brendan Fraser comeback vehicle, "The Whale."

The report does not say which character Sink is playing, and it may be more complicated than it appears. Now, Sink's red hair should set off all of your spider-senses. The obvious conclusion is that she'll be playing Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's famously red-haired girlfriend. But doesn't Tom Holland's Peter already have an Mj?

In the Jon Watts-directed "Spider-Man" trilogy, Holland's Peter Parker got together with Michelle "Mj" Jones (Zendaya). Now, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" ended with Mj losing her memories of Peter, and he...

15 comic books to read if you're loving Invincible
Image
One of the best superheroes shows going on right now is Invincible. The animated Prime Video series is based on Robert Kirkman’s Image Comics series, focusing on Mark Grayson, the son of Omni-Man, the world’s greatest hero. When he comes into his own superpowers, Mark is happy to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

That joy ends when Mark discovers his father’s dark secret: he was paving the way for an alien conquest of Earth. After a brutal fight with his dad, Mark tries to be a hero while handling the usual teenage angst.

The show nails the comic’s tone in shifting from typical superhero adventures to some shockingly dark and violent moments to surprisingly grounded family drama. There are a lot of comics about teen heroes, yet few as crazy as Invincible. If you’re a fan of the show, these 15 comics may be just...

Marvel is missing an opportunity with 'Thunderbolts' original concept
Image
As the build begins for Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, the question is whether the company is making the wrong move with the team.

After a rough 2023, the MCU took time off to regroup, pushed on by the Hollywood strikes. They are trying to bounce back with Deadpool & Wolverine and Captain America: Brave New World. Their big summer entry is Thunderbolts* (the asterisk is intentional), which looks fun.

The plotline has several supporting characters from previous Marvel movies pushed into a team: Bucky/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

The trailer hints at some wild action and comedy, unlike Guardians of the Galaxy or DC’s Suicide Squad. Yet that seems to be a missed opportunity for the movie version of the Thunderbolts to replicate the comics.

“Heroes” in disguise

The Marvel Comic That Combined Two Of Spider-Man's Greatest Enemies
Image
Sony Pictures' woebegotten Spider-Man Universe (no Spider-Man included) kicked off in 2018 with the surprise hit of "Venom," and now has seemingly ended with the disastrous "Kraven The Hunter." Spider-Man has some of the best villains in Marvel Comics, but making them into their own independent characters instead of bad guys? It just wasn't a compelling hook.

With "Venom: The Last Dance" closing the door on Tom Hardy's iteration, will we see a new Venom pop up in a Marvel Studios movie, facing down Tom Holland's Spider-Man? There's plenty of room to keep Venom fresh, since the comic book Venom symbiote has had many hosts besides Eddie Brock. It was introduced clinging to Spider-Man himself as his new black costume, only revealing itself to be a sentient, alien lifeform several issues later. After Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3" featured an underwhelming (and studio-mandated) Venom, Marvel fans have longed...

Every 'Thunderbolts' Member, Their Powers, and How They're Connected
Image
One of the most intriguing Marvel releases of 2025 is Thunderbolts*, a thriller that boasts an assembly of the franchise's anti-heroes. Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, John Walker, Ghost, Taskmaster, and Valentina de Fontaine form a group not unlike the Suicide Squad, and new addition Sentry gets roped into the plot as well. Each of these characters has history in the comics that the film may explore, most of which is tied to Soviet spy networks Hydra and the Red Room. The movies have changed some characters more than others, but this is par for the course for comic book adaptations, and could lead to clever new interpretations in this film.

According to Marvel 101, Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley created the comic that first featured the Thunderbolts, an issue of The Incredible Hulk. Baron Zemo gathered a team of villains including Beetle, Moonstone, and Songbird, to pose as a rising band of heroes.

In the preview for What If...? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen (2025) #1 – written by Kalinda Vazquez, with art by Daniel Picciotto – a Gwen Stacy variant comes to the aid of a herald of Galactus, and is subsequently enlisted by Galactus and granted the power cosmic as the new herald of the World-Devourer.

Gwen's issue is the final one in this What If? one-shot series, and there are still some fascinating things that stand out; in particular, Spider-Gwen using a web shield with her new super-webbing, and even fighting a dragon,...

Spider-Carnage Cosplay Resurrects the 90s' Most Terrifying Symbiote
Image
Marvel was a wild place for comics in the ‘90s, with Spider-Man getting his fair share of events that were amped up to eleven thanks to the decade’s inherently over-the-top and extreme nature, mainly stemming from his infamous Clone Saga and the unexpected debut of Peter Parker’s double, Ben Reilly, as Spider-Man. Thanks to the talent of the cosplay community, Ben Reilly’s brush with the Carnage symbiote has been given the live-action treatment in a way that begs to be explored on the silver screen.

Recently resurrecting this Spider-Man x Carnage character on Instagram, Christian (@christianperera_) is a creative talent who has run the gamut dressing as some of the most popular characters across nerdom, dabbling in the worlds of comics, video games, television, and anime to great effect.

Phil Coulson Returned to Marvel Continuity in 2024, Replacing a Major Marvel God
Image
2024 was the biggest year for Marvel's Phil Coulson since his death in 2012's The Avengers. That's not just because he was resurrection from death, but because he gained immense cosmic power, literally replacing a god in Marvel canon. Nobody guessed that 2024 would transform Phil Coulson, let alone make him the godlike leader of Marvel's most powerful team.

2024 saw a major upheaval in the lore surrounding the Infinity Stones, as Thanos revealed he had created a new 'Death Stone.' However, things really changed when the Stone escaped its creator, resurrecting and empowering former Shield agent Phil Coulson. Not only did this give Coulson major new powers, but it forced him to replace Death, becoming Marvel's new Grim Reaper.

The Death Stone was created when Thanos bound the entity known as Death (and often manifesting as his cosmic love 'Lady Death') to an artificial Infinity Stone. Now that the...

Marvel Officially Introduces Eighth Infinity Stone, But This One Breaks All the Rules
Image
Marvel recently introduced its new seventh Infinity Stone, with Phil Coulson taking possession of the Death Stone - which only makes it all the more surprising that there is now an eighth Infinity Stone in Marvel's reality. However, rather than embodying a new fundamental force of the universe, this Stone is an aberration that just rewrote the rules of Marvel's most powerful artifacts, even removing their biggest weakness.

In the pages of Derek Landy, Ruairí Coleman, Scott Hannah, Brian Reber, Erick Arciniega and Cory Petit's Infinity Watch #1, Phil Couls meets Avery Zavala. Currently, Coulson is trying to shape the current Infinity Stone bearers into a team, leading them into battle against new villains the Apeiron. However, the team are quickly overpowered, and are only saved from death when Zavala steps in to help.

Avery Zavala reveals that he's a previously unknown Infinity Stone bearer, wielding his own Infinity Stone outside of the natural seven.

It's Time Marvel Revisited Deadpool's Most Underrated Reboot
Image
Deadpool is one of the most iconic Marvel Comics characters to date, and while that has a lot to do with the popularity of his MCU franchise, Wade Wilson has been one of my favorite characters since his debut - and I’m certainly not alone there. So it should come as no surprise that Deadpool has seen a reboot or two throughout his Marvel Comics career, including one in particular that I’ve always found incredibly interesting. And it’s time that version of the Merc with a Mouth makes a comeback (sort of).

Marvel Comics’ original Ultimate Universe of Earth-1610 introduced an all-new Deadpool in Ultimate Spider-Man #91-94 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. This Deadpool wasn’t like the classic mutate fans know and love from Earth-616, but a cybernetically enhanced member of the Reavers who was driven by one thing and one thing only: hating mutants.
