Bill Nighy (“Living”) is among the stars recruited to join Prime Video’s upcoming action-adventure series starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham. That show also now has a title — “Ride or Die” — while Matt Miller (“Lethal Weapon”) has joined as showrunner and Peyton Reed (“Ant-Man”) has been tapped to direct the first two episodes.

Ashley Elston’s first adult book First Lie Wins was not only optioned for an adaptation before it published, but when it published, it was a Reese’s Book Club selection for January 2024.

Elston spoke to Deadline on Day 2 of Hello Sunshine’s 2024 Shine Away event reflecting on the time since First Lie Wins came out and what the adaptation process has taught her. Amazon MGM Studios boss Jennifer Salke, Octavia Spencer and Priyanka Chopra Jonas were among the big names lauding the role of women in TV and film at a Prime Video event today.

“Women are at the core of our business – from our incredible actors, our inventive producers and our executive teams,” said Salke, at the Trailblazers event in Central London. The event saw multiple stars, producers and directors touching on issues such as pay parity and production, with several trailers and first looks also unveiled.

During a conversation with Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer, Salke said the pitch for The Help star’s untitled comedy thriller series opposite Hannah Waddingham was among the best she had heard in her career.

“I have heard thousands of pitches, maybe tens of thousands, and it was a top three — the relationship of two women at the center with action, humor and heart,” she said.

Based on an original idea by exec producer Tessa Coates, Skydance Television is behind the show, along with Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s Double Dream shingle and Spencer’s Orit Entertainment. The untitled series will produce eight episodes for Prime Video across the world.

It’s been a huge year for West End star Hannah Waddingham.

Award-winning feel good comedy drama Ted Lasso, in which she starred alongside Jason Sudeikis, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brenda’s Hunt and Phil Dunster, came to an end earlier this year after a hugely successful three season run.

Waddingham can also currently be seen in her Christmas special Hannah Waddingham: Home For Christmas on Apple TV, which sees her put on a concert at the London Coliseum.

An unashamed throwback to variety specials of yesteryear, Waddingham is joined by a variety of guests including several of her Ted Lasso co-stars, Leslie Odom Jr., Luke Evans, Sam Ryder and many more.

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (Truth Be Told) and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) are set to star in and executive produce a new comedy series from creator Tessa Coates (Feel Good). In a highly competitive situation with multiple bidders, the as-yet-untitled series from Skydance Television has landed at Prime Video with a straight-to-series order.

The 8-episode series, based on an original pitch from Coates, follows two best friends, Judith (Waddingham) and Debbie (Spencer), who know everything about each other—or do they? Unbeknownst to Debbie, Judith has been living a double life as a highly trained assassin. When a hit goes horribly wrong, the pair must go on the run together and work to repair their broken friendship—all while being targeted by a mysterious enemy who wants them dead.

Amazon, following an intensive bidding war, has landed the action-adventure show starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer with an eight-episode, straight-to-series order.

The untitled show is based on an original idea from Tessa Coates (Feel Good) that was taken out to six of the major streamers, four of which bought the show while in the room and with the others also making offers before Amazon emerged the victor, prompting the pitch to the seventh streamer to be canceled. The series was one of few new original scripted ideas that generated multiple offers in what many Hollywood insiders say has been an unusually quiet marketplace after the writers strike.
