Manage Your Expecations for ‘Mountainhead’ as a Follow-Up to ‘Succession’: TV Review
Image
Following up “Succession” is a daunting feat — so much so that it’s best to think of the HBO film “Mountainhead” as more of a palate-cleanser than a next act. Written and directed by “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong, “Mountainhead” may share a milieu (the ultra-rich) and a comic rhythm with the lavishly acclaimed drama, but it’s much less ambitious by design. Armstrong wrote the script in a matter of weeks, and most of the action is confined, playlike, to the namesake alpine retreat. As if to send a message to the audience, “Mountainhead” even takes that least prestigious of forms: the made-for-tv movie, airing on the very last day of this year’s Emmy eligibility window — like a student handing in their homework right at the deadline.

If one receives that message and sets expectations accordingly, then “Mountainhead” has plenty to offer. Yes, its 109 minutes may be a way...

Jennifer Garner, Chelsea Handler, Scooter Braun Share ‘Borrowed Spotlight’ With Holocaust Survivors
Image
Yetta Kane, a 92-year-old Holocaust survivor, steps onto the set of a Hollywood photoshoot. It’s August 2023 and sticky hot in Los Angeles. Kane is dressed in a knee-length skirt and matching jacket, a Star of David pendant affixed to her lapel. Her hair is a sweeping crest of pale blonde, her eyes the same hue as the cloudless L.A. sky. Kane’s granddaughter, Emily Kane Miller, pregnant with her third child, is also in tow, and they take a seat in the studio’s waiting area. Yetta opens her purse, pulls out a make-up compact and applies lipstick, and it’s at that moment I think back to a conversation I’d once had with another Holocaust survivor decades earlier.

“Did you dream about anything when you were here?” I’d asked the woman. We were standing alongside the train tracks at Auschwitz, where I’d gone on...

Mark Zuckerberg Launches All-Out Effort to Silence Sarah Wynn-Williams’ Explosive Meta Tell-All
Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg and Meta have reportedly launched an all-out effort to discredit and suppress a tell-all memoir written by former executive Sarah Wynn-Williams, despite many of the book’s explosive claims already circulating. The tech giant’s attempts to silence Wynn-Williams have included legal action and a coordinated PR campaign, according to a recent report by the Washington Post.

Two weeks ago, Meta secured an emergency ruling to temporarily halt Wynn-Williams from promoting or distributing her book, “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism,” citing her eight-year-old separation agreement. However, the 400-page memoir has already climbed to the No. 3 spot on Amazon’s bestseller list.

Mark Zuckerberg Launches All-Out Effort to Silence Sarah Wynn-Williams’ Explosive Meta Tell-All

The Washington Post report details Meta’s behind-the-scenes efforts to discredit Wynn-Williams, who was fired as Facebook’s director of global policy in 2017. These efforts included preemptive negative...

11 Wtf Moments from the Facebook Memoir Mark Zuckerberg Doesn’t Want You to Read
Image
Anyone miserable in their jobs will take some solace from Careless People, a blistering new memoir by Sarah Wynn-Williams, former global public policy director at Facebook (since rebranded as Meta). This tale of her years at the company, from her idealistic pitch for an international role in 2011 to her firing in 2017, charts a descent into the swamp of Silicon Valley’s narcissistic greed and frigid amorality, offering personal indictments of several executives to whom she answered, including Joel Kaplan, Sheryl Sandberg, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

In the book, Wynn-Williams details...

‘October 8’ Review: Somber Doc Tracks Recent Rise of Antisemitism on College Campuses
Image
“Wars today,” we hear early in “October 8,” are fought “not only in battlefields but also on different media outlets. It’s very challenging: the war of the narrative, and sometimes even the war over truth.”

It has become increasingly arduous to determine objective truth in the modern era, particularly on subjects as fraught and ideologically riven as the Middle East. But documentarian Wendy Sachs (“Surge”) narrows her focus, and sets her sights closer to home. She aims, in this passionate and timely documentary, to explore how a culture war has unfolded across U.S. universities since the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.

Under ordinary circumstances, it might feel uncontroversial to make a film about the recent rise of antisemitism on college campuses. There was, we learn, a 140% increase in antisemitic incidents in 2023, the highest on record. Surely this is a trajectory worthy of concern and exploration. But as the movie makes clear,...

How New Documentary ‘October 8’ Is a Touchstone for People Worried About Antisemitism
Image
The past 18 months have marked an extraordinarily turbulent period for Jews worldwide, with a pogrom launched against communities in southern Israel soon yielding a major spike in antisemitic incidents. Veteran documentary filmmaker Wendy Sachs says she watched what transpired and began chronicling and connecting dots.

Sachs’ new film October 8 begins with the unprecedented Hamas attack a day earlier, then tracks the fallout over the course of the ensuing Gaza war, examining global anti-Israel protests along with increases in anti-Jewish rhetoric and violence.

The doc, which opened this past weekend, features a host of prominent figures, including advocates (the Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt), academics (George Washington University’s Lorenzo Vidino), executives (Sheryl Sandberg), podcasters (Dan Senor), politicians (Ritchie Torres) and actor-activists Debra Messing (who executive produced the film) and the Israeli-American Noa Tishby (In Treatment, Nip/Tuck). Together they build an argument that what we are witnessing is simply old...

‘October 8’ Review: Disturbing Documentary Surveys Surge in Antisemitism After Hamas Attacks
Image
October 7, 2023, marked the largest massacre of Jews to take place since the Holocaust, with 251 hostages taken by Hamas as well. Wendy Sachs’ documentary isn’t about that horrific event, although it includes disturbing footage from the infamous day and harrowing testimony by survivors. Rather, it concerns what happened immediately afterward, namely the precipitous rise in antisemitism that manifested itself in demonstrations on college campuses, on the streets and in social media. For those concerned about this growing problem — and everyone should be — October 8 is mandatory viewing.

There is certainly a strong case to be made against Israel’s longstanding mistreatment of Palestinians, as well as against the morality and legality of its ongoing military response in Gaza. But there was something truly perverse about the way in which anti-Israel sentiment came to a fever pitch in the immediate aftermath of the massacre, and the manner in which it morphed into antisemitism.

“Shameful”: Joe Biden Slams Meta & Mark Zuckerberg For Dropping Fact Checking In What Could Be Outgoing Potus’ Last Press Conference
Image
The outgoing Potus took to the bully pulpit Friday while the CEO of Meta went on Joe Rogan today with different takes on facts and the truth.

“Telling the truth matters,” Joe Biden said today in a critical presidential response to Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta pulling the plug on fact checking in what is widely seen as more sucking up to Donald Trump.

In what may be his final press conference at president, Biden spoke on a wide range of topics after giving brief remarks on his economic legacy. With a rare back and forth with the White House press corps, Biden touched on whether he could have beaten his now predecessor and successor in last year’s election, if VP Kamala Harris should run again in 2028 (“That would be a decision for her to make”), the war in Ukraine, pardons and domestic terrorism.

However, it was the news made...

“Everyone Wanted To Keep This Brand Alive”: Boss Of Israeli Streamer Izzy Talks Coming Aboard The ‘Shtisel’ Prequel & 2025 Expansion Plans
Image
Exclusive: Fans of Israeli TV were handed an early Chanukah gift on Wednesday when broadcaster Yes and Fremantle revealed they had cooked up a prequel to hit drama series Shtisel.

Just as crucial a cog in the Kugel machine is Izzy, an Israeli streaming platform that has taken rights to the prequel and will air the show from early next year outside of Israel.

“Everyone wanted to keep this brand alive,” said Nati Dinnar, an Israeli TV vet who founded Izzy in 2020 and has since landed global rights to both Kugel and Shtisel.

Kugel has already launched locally on Yes and yet the majority of its global fanbase and industry only learned of its existence 48 hours ago. Set several years earlier than Shtisel, Kugel moves to Antwerp, Belgium, where Shulem Shtisel’s brother Nuchem and his daughter Libi are making their way in life, with plenty bumps along the way.

Image
Exclusive: Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the documentary October H8te, the explosive Oscar-contending film directed by Wendy Sachs.

Briarcliff plans a theatrical release in the first quarter of 2025 for the film, which documents the sharp rise in antisemitism and anti-Israel demonstrations that immediately followed the devastating October 7 Hamas sneak attack on Israel and have continued since. It devotes particular attention to anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests that erupted on college campuses in the U.S., leading to instances of harassment of Jewish students and defenders of Israel.

Debra Messing on November 18, 2024 in New York City

Actress Debra Messing, one of the few Hollywood stars to speak out ardently and publicly against acts of hate against Jewish and pro-Israel individuals, serves as an executive producer of October H8te and appears on camera in the documentary.

Great Biopics That Stretched The Truth (A Lot)
Image
Everyone loves a good, especially if the person has lived an exciting life. The big problem is that some people don’t. So, to tell a compelling story on the big screen, filmmakers feel the need to tweak the truth slightly for dramatic effect. Maybe a tiny white lie here and there. When overdone, the film goes from a record of history to a completely made-up story. It turns out biopics have been lying to us for a long time. Who can you believe?

Braveheart (1995)

A great story of an ordinary man who stood up to the sprawling empire of Britain and who inspired the people around him to take up arms to protect their land. Except this movie has been listed as one of the most historically inaccurate of all modern film. Historians have stated that the William Wallace presented in the movie never existed. The real Willam Wallace...

‘Even The Walls Cry’: On Anniversary Of October 7, Oscar-Nominee Dror Moreh & Producer Uri Shinar Reveal Feature Doc Made By Dozens Of Volunteers
Image
Exclusive: In the immediate aftermath of October 7, Oscar-nominee Dror Moreh and producer Uri Shinar started working on a documentary that would show how everyday Israelis were transformed into “a collage of heroes” in the space of just a few hours.

On the anniversary of that fateful day, Deadline can reveal Even the Walls Cry, a feature almost solely created by volunteers that Fremantle has backed and will be selling at next month’s MIPCOM Cannes.

October 7 was one of the deadliest days of fighting ever in Israel, with around 1,200 people killed after Hamas launched its attack and 250 taken hostage – many of whom have either died in captivity or not yet released. By October 9, Shinar had “asked myself where I should be” and headed to a headquarters for hostages’ families, which had been set up by some friends.

Telling the ordinary stories of those who faced “crimes against humanity,” according to Shinar,...

“F*** These Trump-Loving Techies”: Hollywood Takes on Silicon Valley in an Epic Presidential Brawl
Image
If you were to stick a pin in a timeline at the exact moment Silicon Valley declared war on Hollywood, it would likely land on Aug. 29, 1997. That’s the date Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph got together in Scotts Valley, about an hour south of San Francisco, and started a little DVD delivery company called Netflix.

The rest is history: Within just a couple of decades, all the traditional pillars of the old entertainment order started to crumble. Linear television, cable TV, theatrical box office — nothing was left standing, at least not as tall as it once had. This we all know, all too well.

But here’s what’s new. Very recently, just over the past several weeks, there have been signs that Southern California once again is rising — or trying to, at any rate. This time, though, the civil war with the north isn’t over digital platform...

Exclusive: A new documentary will tell the harrowing story of 10 youngsters who fled the Nova Music Festival on October 7. They were subsequently attacked as they took cover in a bunker and had to hide under the bodies of those who had been killed to survive.

The group in the film managed to exit the festival quickly and hoped they had found safety by sheltering in one of the many bunkers on the edge of Gaza. In the subsequent eight hours, however, they were subject to machine gun and grenade attacks. Sheryl Sandberg in The Daily Show (1996)
In Sheryl Sandberg’s ‘Screams Before Silence’ Doc, Survivors of Oct. 7 Sexual Violence Speak: ‘Mom, They’re Going to Rape Me Now’
Sheryl Sandberg in The Daily Show (1996)
“Screams Before Silence,” a documentary from Israeli production company Kastina Communications (“Fauda”), begins with a note that viewer discretion is advised. As trigger warnings go, this one is exceptionally understated. Though the film runs just 60 minutes, it’s often so challenging to watch that it seems to last twice as long.

To be clear, that’s not a criticism of the work itself — director Anat Stalinsky has done an immensely powerful job bringing us back to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, which ignited the region’s still-raging war.

Stalinsky’s particular and unapologetically narrow focus is on Hamas’ use of sexual violence as a tool of combat. She starts by taking us into burned-out homes, which are shot by cinematographer Sasha Gavrikov with an eerie, devastatingly stark beauty that resembles nothing so much as a horror film — which is, in its way, what this is. Note that any review...

Why Facebook Watch Was Scrapped: Keeping Netflix Happy, Lawsuit Says
Image
A newly unsealed document in a potential class-action lawsuit alleges that Facebook shut down Facebook Watch to keep Netflix among its top advertisers — and to keep ads for Netflix series and films off of emerging competitors like Snapchat, a person with knowledge of the lawsuit tells IndieWire. And along the way, the two traded lots and lots of your data — allegedly.

The suit, filed by attorney Brian J. Dunne on behalf of other Facebook advertisers, seeks billions in damages. If they win at trial or settle, the exact dollar amount would come down to a percentage of Facebook’s overall advertising revenue from 2016-2019.

Before Facebook launched streaming-video platform Facebook Watch in August 2017, Netflix spent about $40 million per year on Facebook ads, per the letter from Dunne to a Judge Donato. Shortly after Mark Zuckerberg doomed Facebook Watch by decimating its budget in 2018, the spend increased to $150 million; two years later,...

‘I’m a big believer in pain being an adhesive’: Jon Bernthal on ‘walking through fire’ for Ava DuVernay
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in Origin (2023)
The actor’s new film Origin sees him star as the husband of Pulitzer-winner Isabel Wilkerson. He reflects on the fight for social justice and avoiding the new film seeming like a ‘woke agenda’

As Jon Bernthal’s face pings on to the screen from his California home, I’m peering in to his giant living room, looking for his three pit bull terriers. While he was, for a long time, mainly thought of as the square-jawed beefcake Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead, and later as the iron-pecced Punisher in two eponymous series and various episodes of Daredevil, the 47-year-old has become more associated with social conscience, on screen and off.

He has a podcast, Real Ones, where he talks to people on the frontlines of big issues – police officers, gang members, doctors, soldiers. He runs a community empowerment Ngo, Drops Fill Buckets, with his brother Nick, an orthopaedic...

Meta, Google top executives rake in big bonuses amid company-wide layoffs
Image
San Francisco, April 25 (Ians) As tech giants like Meta and Google lay off thousands of employees and more job cuts are on the way, top executives took home hefty bonuses and compensation.

Meta workers grilled CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a virtual Q&a session about the six-figure bonuses given to senior executives amid layoffs, reports Entrepreneur.

According to Meta’s filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released last week, C-suite executives like chief financial officer Susan Li received $575,613 in bonuses; chief product officer Chris Cox $940,214; chief operating officer Javier Olivan; chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth; Strategy Officer (Cso) David Whener $712,284 and former COO Sheryl Sandberg $298,385.

“Why did the entire executive team get Ee/Ge ratings (top-tier performance reviews at Meta) when they are also directly responsible for the choices that led to us needing to lay off 20+ per cent of the company? Where is the accountability?” one employee asked Zuckerberg,...

‘Succession’: Shiv Roy’s Thirsty Fan Army Is Taking Over the Internet
Image
There’s a lot to admire about Sarah Snook’s performance of Shiv Roy, the icy, relentlessly striving middle child of the Roy family on Succession. She’s poised and quick-witted, effortlessly eviscerating her doofus husband and brothers with an élan that only a multibillion-dollar trust fund and a top-tier Miss Porter’s education can buy. And she’s stylish, swanning around Tuscan villas and boardrooms in a series of immaculately tailored, curve-hugging écru sheaths.

But when it comes to Shiv herself, it’s hard to make the argument that...

John Carmack steps down as consulting Cto for VR at Meta
Image
San Francisco, Dec 17 (Ians) John Carmack, known for his work on virtual reality as well as classic games like Doom and Quake, has stepped down from his role as consulting Cto for VR at Meta, the media reported.

He had worked at the company for more than eight years.

According to The New York Times, Carmack, 52, criticised his employer in an internal post written by him.

While Meta is in the process of transitioning from a social networking company to one focused on the metaverse, he said the company is running at “half its effectiveness” and has “a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort”.

“It has been a struggle for me. I have a voice at the highest levels here, so it feels like I should be able to move things, but I’m evidently not persuasive enough,” Carmack was quoted as saying.

Bloomberg’s Emily Chang Tackles New Technology Assignment
Image
Emily Chang may be able to do for technology what Anthony Bourdain did for cuisine.

The longtime Bloomberg TV correspondent is leaving her assignment as the anchor of the daily Bloomberg show “Bloomberg Technology” after 12 years in order to devote her attention to developing a suite of programs that explore the intersection of technology, business and culture.

“Studio 1.0,” a show Chang has led that features in-depth interviews, will run as a weekly program in which the anchor uses sit-down conversations and field segments to explore issues tied to technology and to meet CEOs, entrepreneurs and influencers. She might explore topics such as the hype around cryptocurrency, for example, or the impact of Tik Tok on popular culture.

Chang will also develop new limited series that dig deeper on specific topics.

She won’t be absent from Bloomberg’s regular coverage. She will still conduct interviews with big newsmakers and contribute...

Meta building more paid features across its family of apps
Image
San Francisco, Sep 1 (Ians) Hurt by falling revenue in its ad business after Apple iOS privacy changes on App Store, Meta is setting up a new team to identify and build more paid features for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

According to The Verge, the new division is Meta’s “first serious foray into building paid features across its main social apps”.

The group ‘New Monetisation Experiences’ will be headed by Pratiti Raychoudhury, former Meta’s head of research, the report said late on Wednesday.

The new monetisation drive is happening at Meta after the company reported loss in revenue in the June quarter for the first time since going public in 2007, predicting that growth in the third quarter could fall even more.

Facebook reported a 1 per cent drop in revenue to 28.8 billion, a 1 per cent decrease from 29.07 billion in the second quarter of 2021.

Overall, Meta’s profit fell 36 per cent to 6.7 billion in the quarter.

Zuckerberg, Sandberg not to depose in Cambridge Analytica scandal lawsuit
Image
San Francisco, Aug 27 (Ians) In a relief for Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, the top Meta executives will not depose in a lawsuit about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, after the social network reached an out-of-court settlement with the plaintiffs.

The depositions were set to happen sometime before September 20 where Zuckerberg was to answer questions for up to six hours, while Sandberg could face up to five hours of deposition.

The deposition came as part of a lawsuit filed in a California court on behalf of Facebook users impacted by Meta’s partnership with Cambridge Analytica.

According to The Verge, Meta and the plaintiffs have now reached an agreement and requested a stay of 60 days to finalise their written agreement.

The lawsuit had alleged that Facebook illegally shared user data with third parties.

In the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook gained access to the private data of 67 million Facebook users, which was used to profile voters.

Outgoing Meta chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg married former NBC News producer Tom Bernthal on Saturday.

The pair, who got engaged in February 2020 after starting their relationship the year prior, appropriately took to Instagram to announce the news. They each posted the same photo of themselves holding hands in the woods, with Sandberg succinctly captioning it, “Married,” adding a string of heart emojis.

Bernthal, the founder of consulting firm Kelton Global and brother to actor Jon Bernthal, included a lengthier caption in his post. His message alluded to the 2015 death of Sandberg’s previous husband, former Yahoo executive Dave Sandberg, in addition to his own divorce.

“After both experiencing loss, @sherylsandberg and I weren’t sure we would ever find love again,” Bernthal wrote. “Over the last three years, we’ve merged our lives and blended our families. Our wedding today was a dream come true.

Sun Valley Scene: Biz’s Gathering Storm, Twitter M&a Drama Keeps Moguls in Stealth Mode
Image
Sun Valley, Idaho — As the sun is about to set on another Sun Valley conference, this year’s four-day Allen & Co. event has been notable for the low profile kept by the most high-wattage attendees, to the frustration of the business, media and tech sectors obsessed with the activity of billionaires and CEOs.

Before the moguls pack up and leave the exclusive Sun Valley Lodge — at least those who haven’t booked it to their private jets already, like Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav, who left Thursday night — Tesla boss and maybe-soon-to-be-Twitter-owner Elon Musk (who snuck in through the back entrance Thursday evening) will take the stage for the gathering’s big closing chat Saturday. That coveted slot has previously been given to other high-profile guests of honor, including Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, both of whom were back in attendance this year.

True to his affable form,...

Sun Valley Scene Day 2: Elon Musk Watch Begins, Rupert Murdoch and Mark Zuckerberg Lay Low
Image
Sun Valley, Idaho — The Elon Musk watch is on.

The first full day of Allen & Co.’s exclusive conference and retreat for the wealthy and well-connected concluded Wednesday at the luxe Sun Valley resort. Even among the assembled 1-ers, there was anticipation for the arrival of the maverick leader of Tesla and SpaceX, who is expected to make an appearance at the annual meeting of moguls and C-suite titans.

Following Tuesday’s many arrivals and some solo morning time, during which Verizon chief Hans Vestberg went for a run around the resort in the 6 a.m. hour, the agenda kicked off with an outdoor breakfast held for the business, media and tech moguls and their guests in a shaded area behind the lodge.

After the catered affair, the day was filled with private meetings and well-guarded guest speaker sessions, which usually focus on heady global economic and public policy topics.

Sun Valley Scene: David Zaslav, Sheryl Sandberg, Bob Chapek, Ted Sarandos Make the Rounds

Sun Valley, Idaho — The moguls have arrived.

On Tuesday, dozens of titans of the business, media and tech worlds came out to play at the Sun Valley Lodge in Idaho for the start of Allen & Co.’s annual meeting of movers and shakers.

The invitation-only conference will include three days of seminars and meetings that are held away from the prying eyes of the public, which kick off Wednesday morning. So today was all about meeting and greeting each other at the posh retreat in Idaho’s picturesque Sawtooth Mountains.

Arrivals began at the Sun Valley Lodge around 11 a.m. local time, with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Comcast chief Brian Roberts, Imagine’s Brian Grazer, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell, Paramount Global chairman Shari Redstone and investor Jeffrey Katzenberg among the first to check in, receive their agenda briefing books and strap on a mask before receiving a Covid test.

Sun Valley Beckons Moguls Amid Storm Clouds in the Deals Sky
Image
Click here to read the full article.

First, July 4. Then, Sun Valley. Right after Independence Day, media and technology titans will once again jet to the Idaho resort to mingle at the annual gathering of investment bank Allen & Co., which has been nicknamed “summer camp for moguls.”

The secretive and exclusive gathering of media, tech and other power brokers traditionally mixes presentations, discussions and such social activities as hiking, rafting and golf. And deals talk, whether first contact about a potential merger, discussions of pending or completed transactions or meetings that lead to M&a conversations down the line. has long been a hallmark of the invite-only Allen event.

This year is unlikely to be different, even if the tone may be different from last year. For example, as CEO of Discovery, David Zaslav has long been one of the media moguls attending the annual gathering and one who has been...
