VidCon’s new owner says it’s “the Super Bowl for creators,” but doesn’t have concrete plans to pump it up
Image
When the Green brothers founded VidCon in 2010, there was no other event like it. Now, the creator industry is a $250 billion business that spans dozens of platforms and monetization machines, with millions of creators making their living from posting content; then, it was a collection of creatives who were doing cool stuff online, with no real expectation that their YouTube videos would turn into a career. VidCon was one of the only places for creators and fans to meet up, and was a hallmark annual social event.

But as our space evolved, more events popped up, most of them (like VidSummit and Creator Economy Live) biz dev-focused and more about getting creators face time with potential management, marketing, and merchandising partners than about arranging fan meet-and-greets.

This has left VidCon in kind of a weird spot, especially after its 2018 sale to Viacom. It tried flexing to embrace the TikTok era,...

VidCon’s New Owner Has Big Plans for the Creator Economy’s Flagship Convention
Image
In a video posted to his YouTube channel in 2009, the popular YouTube creator Hank Green had a big announcement to make.

“A couple of months ago, [my brother] John and I decided that we were really interested in the possibility of getting a real life online video conference happening, in order to get all of the best online video creators together in one place,” Green said, explaining why he thought an online video conference made sense. “Online video is a really huge deal now, we have people on YouTube that have a bigger audience than Oprah or Anderson Cooper.”

The first VidCon was held in the summer of 2010 in Century City, with speakers that included the Green brothers, Shane Dawson, Autotune the News, and Philip DeFranco, among others.

It may have been ahead of its time.

While everyone could see the vibrant communities forming through online video, the creator economy was still...

Have you heard? Alix Earle’s haircare hack, DrLupo’s chess cheat, and the VidCon Hall of Fame
Image
Each week, we handpick a selection of stories to give you a snapshot of trends, updates, business moves, and more from around the creator industry. This week, one creator turned a bathroom find into a brand campaign, another interviewed the NBA commissioner, and nine more became part of an inaugural hall-of-fame class.

The biz

Alix Earle made expired shampoo cool. The it-girl influencer sparked a viral trend when she praised the effectiveness of an expired Pantene shampoo bottle she found in her family’s bathroom. Now she’s the star of a campaign that comes with a simple proposition: If Pantene works beyond its expiration date, imagine how good it is when it’s not expired.

Kalen Gorman, Producer of Behind-the-Scenes Content for ‘Glee,’ Dies at 59
Image
Kalen Gorman, who produced interviews and other behind-the-scenes content for Ryan Murphy’s Glee, entertainment that generated hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and other platforms, has died. She was 59.

Gorman died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a battle with breast cancer, a publicist announced.

The Tribeca Festival wants to deepen its relationship with creators
Image
The 2025 edition of the Tribeca Festival will include a new piece of programming that will bring more independent artists into the fold. The annual gathering put on by production house Tribeca Film has announced a Creators Forum that will include talks, roundtables, and networking opportunities for and by the rising class of influencer filmmakers.

The Creators Forum will span multiple days during the 2025 Tribeca Festival, which will run from June 4 to June 15 in the namesake Manhattan neighborhood. A press release from Tribeca claims that the “broader filmmaking community” will be served by the new forum.

Industry leaders, indie hitmakers, and innovators will spearhead discussions on topics that bridge the gap between the social media world and Hollywood. One point of emphasis will be festival strategy and distribution — a logical focus given the Forum’s setting.

Comcast Pulls Plug On G4 TV, Ending Comeback Try For Gamer-Focused Network
Image
Exclusive: Comcast’s Spectacor division is pulling the plug on video game-centric network G4 TV, whose early incarnation in the 2000s remains a cultural touchstone for many millennials, just a year after its relaunch.

In a memo set to be sent out to all employees, Spectacor CEO Dave Scott explained that the company’s investment and efforts to revive the network just didn’t gain traction.

A few dozen employees and contract workers are affected by the shutdown. Comcast said it will assist them with outplacement and consider some for internal opportunities.

The departure over the summer of Russell Arons, an experienced digital media exec who had come aboard as G4’s president in 2021, was a precursor to today’s news. Her duties were added to the portfolio of Joe Marsh, a Comcast Spectacor vet who has been CEO of T1, an international esports joint venture with Korea’s Sk Telecom.

G4 TV President Russell Arons Exits Revived Network; Gaming Vet Joe Marsh Expands Duties At Comcast Spectacor
Attack of the Show! (2005)
Exclusive: Russell Arons, an experienced digital executive who joined G4 TV last September as president, has exited the recently revived network.

Arons, who has previously held senior-level positions at Warner Bros, Machinima and Electronic Arts, left her G4 post in July, multiple insiders confirmed to Deadline. Her departure came less than a year after her arrival was announced, and the exact circumstances remain unclear. Arons and Comcast Spectacor, the Philadelphia-based entertainment and sports division of Comcast that runs G4, both declined to comment.

Joe Marsh, an executive with extensive gaming-related experience at Comcast Spectacor, is expanding his role to encompass many of Arons’ former duties, according to a person familiar with the transition. Marsh is currently serving as CEO of T1, an international esports joint venture between Comcast Spectacor and Korea’s Sk Telecom. Marsh was previously chief business officer for the Philadelphia Fusion, an esports team formed by Comcast...

Even Top Creators Find That Star Power Is Fleeting

VidCon, the marquee gathering for creators and influencers, was poised for a triumphant return to Anaheim after its two-year Covid-19 hiatus. And this year, TikTok — the once upstart platform that skyrocketed during the pandemic to more than 1-billion plus active users — was taking over YouTube’s spot as the conference’s title sponsor, promising the presence of top TikTok creators and an injection of new energy into the 12-year-old conference.

The creator economy has skyrocketed in the past few years, with the market size for consumers spending money on creators projected to grow from 9.8 billion to more than 18 billion, according to an October 2021 report from UTA. And with that growth has come sizable budgets from brands inking lucrative deals with talent and sustained interest from burgeoning creators seeking to monetize their followings and turn their content into a business. For Rooster Teeth, “video podcasts” aren’t necessarily videos — or podcasts
Image
The podcast industry has evolved considerably since the last in-person VidCon in 2019. U.S. podcasting is now a 2 billion business, and one organization that has taken advantage of that shift in consumer attention is Rooster Teeth. Through its audio network The Roost, the Austin-based media company distributes podcasts from renowned creators, including Anthony Padilla, Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart, and some of its own homegrown talent. These shows have collectively pulled in 87 million video views, according to The Roost's website.

Given how heavily Rooster Teeth has prioritized podcasting, I was curious to see how the company's execs would define "video podcasts" at a June 24 VidCon panel. The result was unexpected: Rooster Teeth co-founder Geoff Ramsey and podcasting head A.J. Feliciano claimed that a video podcast doesn't need to incorporate video at all, and some consumers won't even think of those videos as podcasts.

"A video podcast is neither a video...

G4 Sets Date For Return To Linear TV On Verizon Fios, Cox, Xfinity TV & Philo
Image
Reanimated video game culture hub G4 will return to linear TV on November 16, with carriage deals in place on Verizon FiOS, Cox, Xfinity TV and Philo.

In announcing its return, the network also said it will also have a multi-year promotional and commercial partnership with Twitch. It also plans to continue putting out channel-specific content on social media and YouTube.

G4 originally launched in 2002 and was created by former Disney TV exec Charles Hirschhorn, who saw it as a successor to MTV in its ability to tap into youth culture. A number of notable personalities appeared on the network as hosts, among them Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick, Kevin Pereira and Grace Helbig. G4 went dark in 2014 as its place on the dial was taken over by the Esquire Network, which would prove to be a short-lived branding exercise. Streamys Announces Host-Less Ceremony In Lieu Of ‘Collaborators’ Brandon Rogers, Mark Rober, Emma Chamberlain, Hannah Stocking, And More
This year’s Streamy Awards, co-produced by Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter, are set to ditch the traditional singular host format, in favor of a faction of creators who will head up this year’s ceremony as so-called "collaborators.”

Past Streamys have featured The Try Guys, Jon Cozart, King Bach, Grace Helbig, Tyler Oakley, and Hannah Hart as masters of ceremonies. Instead, this year’s show will feature a number of creator-led segments that the Streamys says serve to emphasize the diversity of the space, including Emma Chamberlain, Mr. Kate, Rosanna Pansino, Mark Rober, Brandon Rogers, Patrick Starrr, and Hannah Stocking. All told, these collaborators count more than 100 million followers across multiple verticals including beauty, comedy, food, and education.

“Collaboration is a hallmark of YouTube culture -- so this year we're working with multiple creators to further showcase the diverse and robust range of creative talent within the digital community worldwide,...

Patreon Founder Jack Conte Launches ‘Super Patron’ Endowment That Will Give Creators A Yearly Salary
Jack Conte, the co-founder of Patreon, is launching a new endowment fund that will give creators -- of any following size or location -- what amounts to a year’s salary, so that they can focus on the act of creation full-time.

Cheekily dubbed Super Patron: A Creator Arts Endowment F*ck Yeah!, the initiative was inspired by author Harper Lee -- who received a gift of a year's wages from friends telling her to write whatever she wanted, which ultimately became To Kill A Mockingbird -- and was started with $1 million worth of Patreon’s stock. That said, Super Patron is a separate initiative from Patreon itself, and is a 501c3 non-profit.

Applications are open now, and the recipient of the first grant -- for $50,000 -- will be announced in December. Recipients will be selected by a committee consisting of comedian and Patreon investor Hannibal Burress, veteran YouTuber Grace Helbig,...

Lilly Singh
TV Review: ‘A Little Late with Lilly Singh’
Lilly Singh
Lilly Singh is well aware of her unique place in late night. After kicking off her first episode with a rap dedicated to the fact that she is not, unlike every other network late-night host, a straight white man, Singh walks out onto her own stage and addresses it with her audience directly. “I get it…I’m not your traditional talk show host,” she says, grinning in a bright red suit. “The media’s mentioned that I’m a ‘bisexual woman of color’ so much that I feel like I should just change my name.” At this point, the graphic above her shoulder shifts from “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” to “A Little Late with Bisexual Woman of Color.”

It’s a fair shot. Singh’s inauguration as the latest comedian to take a stab at hosting a network late night show has led to many emphasizing those...

Grace Helbig And Mamrie Hart Turn To Patreon For ‘This Might Get Weird’ Podcast
Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart are the latest YouTube stars to hop on the Patreon bandwagon in a bid to find financial backing for their axed YouTube series-turned-podcast This Might Get Weird.

The longtime collaborators explained in an announcement video (below) that they are seeking fan support after This Might Get was cancelled by Studio71, and they no longer have the production support of a major digital network. Therefore, the two comedians and BFFs want to foster a fan-based community around the new podcast, which comprises unfiltered weekly catch-up sessions.

“Grace and I have been doing YouTube for a long-ass time," Hart says, "and the people who have been watching us for a while have grown up, too. We don't want to only talk about things that just seem appropriate to a YouTube algorithm.”
