‘Awards Magnet’: Kathy vs. Britt, Noah vs. Adam, and all the drama over drama — including casting!
Image
The Awards Magnet team is back to dish all the drama over drama at the 2025 Emmys.

While senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson agree on who will win most categories, they fiercely clash on others like Best Drama Series (The Pitt vs. Severance), Best Drama Guest Actress (Merritt Wever vs. Kaitlyn Dever), and Best Drama Casting (The Pitt vs. The White Lotus). Oh, the humanity!

In the lead races, they debate the closely watched contests of Kathy Bates vs. Britt Lower for Best Drama Actress, and Noah Wyle vs. Adam Scott for Best Drama Actor. Does Bates have an uphill climb because she's the only Emmy nominee from her show, Matlock? Or could Lower take her down as part of a Severance sweep? They also note how Wyle submitted the season finale of The Pitt instead of his heralded breakdown episode, while Scott put forth the absolute best option he could have,...

Carrie Coon surprised fellow The White Lotus season 3 stars were snubbed
Image
When the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, July 15, there was a lot to celebrate for HBO's critically acclaimed, fan-favorite anthology series The White Lotus. Once again, the series proved its awards prowess by landing an astonishing and deserved 23 nominations, which tied the series for the third most-nominated series alongside Apple TV+'s freshman comedy The Studio.

Among The White Lotus season 3's 23 nominations was the expected but no less warranted Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nomination for Carrie Coon. In the category, she was joined by fellow season 3 stars Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, and Aimee Lou Wood, though Coon's scene partners Michelle Monaghan and Leslie Bibb didn't receive nominations.

Michelle Monaghan and Leslie Bibb snubbed by the Emmys

In a post-nomination interview with Variety, Coon reacted to her Emmy nomination for The White Lotus and lamented Bibb and Monaghan's snubs. The actress feels as though her...

‘The Last of Us’ earns 16 Emmy nominations — but has 3 shocking snubs
Image
Emmy voters are still infected with The Last of Us, rewarding the zombified series with 16 nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series. Notably, Season 2 of HBO's adaptation of the popular video-game series didn't get everything for which it submitted, and there are three notable snubs that are causing an uproar on social media: supporting actress Isabela Merced, and the standout episode "Through The Valley" in both directing and writing.

Here are the categories The Last of Us got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

It was never a question whether the fungal apocalypse drama would receive a series bid, since Season 1 scored 24 nominations and won eight trophies in 2023. The Last of Us ended up placing fourth in Gold Derby's Best Drama Series predictions by the time the nominations were announced. It finds itself nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

‘Squid Game’ skunked at the Emmys: Here are all the nominations it missed for Season 2 — including Lee Jung-jae and Choi Seung-hyun
Image
Sorry, Squid Game fans — it's game over at the Emmys.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, Netflix's most popular show was never expected to match the 14 Emmy nominations it earned in 2022, but nobody predicted Season 2 would get completely shut out. Just three years ago, Squid Game was nominated for Best Drama Series and brought home six awards: Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Directing, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee Yoo-mi, Best Production Design (“Kkanbu”), Best Stunt Performance (“Stick to the Team”), and Best Visual Effects (“VIPs”). Three years later, Squid Game's second season continued to captivate audiences, logging over 192 million views on Netflix — but totally flopped with Emmy voters.

Here are the categories the second missed.

Best Drama Series

With eight slots available for Best Drama, Squid Game was barely holding onto the eighth position. While the second season wasn’t as critically acclaimed as the first...

The 77th Emmy Awards nominees are a mixture of familiar and new, with Severance‘s second season topping the list with 27 nominations. Newbie The Studio scored 23 nominations, tying The Bear for the most Emmy nominations for a comedy series in a single year.

The Penguin received 24 nominations, and The White Lotus picked up 23. The Last Of Us earned 16 nominations, followed by Andor and Hacks with 14 each. Adolescence, The Bear, and The Pitt each received 13.

“In a year when the industry has continued to evolve—creatively, structurally, and economically—one thing remains clear: powerful performances and compelling stories still cut through. Emmy voters took notice this year as more members voted in the competition than ever before,” stated Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “It’s a reminder of the impact incredible television and exceptional artists have on all of us. Image
While The White Lotus didn’t sweep the Supporting Actor/Actresses in a Drama Series category, as was at times predicted, the HBO powerhouse did match its Season 2 Emmy nomination tally with 23 this year, bringing its to-date total to 66 with 15 overall wins — with more potentially in store at the ceremony to be held Sept. 14.

Once again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, performers Jason Isaacs, Scott Glenn and Aimee Lou Wood scored their first-ever Emmy nominations this year.

For Supporting Actress in a Drama, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Natasha Rothwell were also honored, with the latter seeing a repeat nomination for her role as Belinda, which she originated back in Season 1. Julianne Nicholson dances her way to the top of the Comedy Guest Actress Emmy predictions for ‘Hacks’
Image
Looks like Dance Mom will boogie all the way to the Emmy podium.

Julianne Nicholson, who played the joyous (and drug-addicted) character on Hacks Season 4, now leads the Best Comedy Guest Actress race, taking down longtime frontrunner Jamie Lee Curtis for The Bear, who won last year. Nicholson's Dance Mom, aka Mary Alice, was recruited by Paul W. Downs' Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla to appear on Late Night With Deborah Vance as a way for the talk show-within-a-show to gain a younger audience. At first, Jean Smart's Deborah was hesitant to let the untested woman take the stage, until she realized it would annoy Hannah Einbinder's Ava, and then all bets were off.

There's a new Hacks tonight, but I have not yet recovered from Julianne Nicholson dancing to Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" as Dance Mom in last week's episode. pic.twitter.com/SH3OPittFI

The 2025 Emmys Writing Contenders — Severance & Andor Battle in Drama, Hacks versus the World in Comedy
Image
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of predicting the Emmys has long been the writing categories. Not only are they wildly variable, but they require impeccable strategy from the campaigns in question. Does the team behind a show know they can grab two nominations? Or are they trying to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks? Many shows have attempted to only run one episode, but what happens if you choose the wrong ones? Below, we try to make sense of the madness with the categories reaching the minimum submissions to keep a consistent nomination count.

The 2025 Emmys Writing Contenders – Comedy, Drama, Limited Series/TV Movie, and Variety

Just a quick reminder before we get into the discussion. Unlike other categories, where a performer chooses their “submission” episode after the nomination, the writing categories choose their submissions before nominations. The predictions we have below are based on the episodes...

‘Severance’ star Tramell Tillman could make Emmy history as the first Black Best Drama Supporting Actor winner
Image
In 2015, Viola Davis won the Best Drama Actress Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder, becoming the category's first Black winner. That left one acting category that had yet to produce a Black champ: Best Drama Supporting Actor. Ten years later, that remains the case — even the short form acting categories, which were created in 2016 and consolidated into one in 2024, have awarded Black performers — but that could finally change in September with Severance star Tramell Tillman.

Tillman is currently in third place in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actor odds, trailing Walton Goggins (The White Lotus) and Severance costar John Turturro. Tillman is the only Black performer in the top seven. Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus) round out the predicted field.

Tillman was not nominated for the first season in 2022, not surprising for an...

Jason Statham's 14-Year-Old Hidden Masterpiece Action Movie Is Now on Peacock
Image
Peacock subscribers who are fans of Jason Statham are in luck. The actor's 2011 action hit The Mechanic is now streaming on the platform.

Released in 2011, the action thriller stars Statham as Arthur Bishop, a professional assassin or 'mechanic,' who specializes in making his hits look like accidents, suicides, and petty criminals' acts. The movie, a remake of the Charles Bronson-led film of the same name from 1972, was a modest box office hit, grossing over $76 million worldwide, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, although Statham's performance and the action sequences were praised.

A sequel, titled The Mechanic: Resurrection, followed in 2016. The follow-up, which was a streaming hit on Max earlier this year, saw Statham return to the role of Bishop, who had foolishly thought he had been able to put his murderous past behind him. However, when his most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life, he is...

'The Most Irritating Voice': Jason Isaacs Talks Coming Up With The White Lotus and Harry Potter Accents
Image
Throughout his career, Jason Isaacs had many impressive roles, including roles in franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, and even becoming Cary Grant in Archie. However, one of his most popular roles was in Harry Potter, and now the hit HBO series The White Lotus.

The role of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and The White Lotus' Timothy Ratliff were vastly different, and not just because of the magical element from the fantasy series, but also because of the accents. Lucius was from the UK, while Tim was a successful businessman from North Carolina. During a new appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Isaacs explained how he managed his spot-on Southern accent, and how he shocked Harry Potter director Chris Columbus with his initial take on Lucius.

"The internet was concerned with two things," Isaacs explained about his The White Lotus role. "My penis and my accent.

Jessica Capshaw has her eyes set on another hit show following her time on Grey’s Anatomy.

The actress, who played Dr. Arizona Robbins on the long-running medical drama for 10 seasons, recently shared on her and Camilla Luddington’s Call It What It Is podcast that she auditioned for season three of The White Lotus, but that Leslie Bibb ultimately landed the role.

“I auditioned for Leslie Bibb’s part, and I remember getting to the audition and being like — I mean, I’m just such a huge fan of the show, so I was giddy with excitement,” she said about auditioning for the role of Kate.

Capshaw continued, “It’s always so fun to put together an audition and see where it goes, and then see it come to fruition. Because what’s unbelievably remarkable and wild about the casting process — and I guess not shocking — is we’re all very different,...

Jessica Capshaw Plans To “Keep Auditioning” For ‘The White Lotus’ After Losing Part To Leslie Bibb
Image
Following her tenure at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Jessica Capshaw is hoping to join another iconic TV ensemble.

The Grey’s Anatomy actress recently recounted auditioning for the part of Kate Bohr on Season 3 of The White Lotus, which ultimately went to Leslie Bibb, whose performance she praised as “fantastic.”

“I auditioned for Leslie Bibb’s part, and I remember getting to the audition and being like — I mean, I’m just such a huge fan of the show, so I was giddy with excitement,” she told Grey’s co-star Camilla Luddington on their Call It What It Is podcast.

“It’s always so fun to put together an audition and see where it goes, and then see it come to fruition,” added Capshaw. “Because what’s unbelievably remarkable and wild about the casting process is we’re all very different, we all have a very different take on it.”

Image
Many know Mike White as the brilliant genius behind The White Lotus. But you might be surprised to learn that he was also a standout player in Survivor. Yes, the reality show that is famous for its intense puzzles and the grand $1 million prize.

Throughout the years, the CBS hit has seen many participants making their way to the island, but only a few left the kind of mark Mike White did. Interestingly, he not only took part in the show, but he nearly won the whole thing.

But just when it seemed like he might take the Sole Survivor crown, a rather emotionally charged story sealed his fate on the show, and he lost the title.

The White Lotus’ big finale twist pays homage to an iconic Star Wars moment
Image
It’s time to check out from another season of The White Lotus, and before the final credits rolled on the latest edition of Mike White’s decadent dark comedy anthology, the shadow of death loomed large in Thailand. While season 1 saw the tragic demise of Murray Bartlett’s Armond and season 2 was a veritable bloodbath that had us waving goodbye to Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid and ‘the gays,’ the bodies were again piled high in season 3.

As with any season of The White Lotus, it was anyone’s guess who’d be leaving in a body bag. I'm just thankful that Parker Posey’s Victoria Ratliff will live to fight another day (she has to be the new Coolidge for season 4). While Lochlan Ratliff (Sam Nivola) survived a brush with death at the wrong end of a poison shake, it was the end of the road for Walton...

'Probably The Most Profound:" Patrick Schwarzenegger Reflects on The White Lotus Season 3 Finale
Image
The White Lotusstar Patrick Schwarzenegger has nothing but praise for his time on the popular HBO series. According to the actor, it presented him with "probably the most profound" moment of his acting career.

Speaking to Deadline, Schwarzenegger discussed the relative face-turn his The White Lotus character, Saxon, undergoes throughout the hit series' third season. Referring to one scene in particular in which Saxon watches Aimee Lou Wood's Chelsea walk away from him in disappointment, he said, "Well, that... it was actually my first week filming… but it's probably the most profound moment of my acting career."

Schwarzenegger went on to explain that the scene was "just kind of this internalizing moment," for series creator and writer-director Mike White. "He wants to have the audience left with... 'Will Saxon change?' Then you have him with the book on the boat. That's his full, full-circle moment. Although Chelsea's gone,...

'White Lotus' Season 3 Star Discloses the Word Their Character Said Upon Dying That Was Cut!
Image
Spoilers ahead if you have not seen the final episode of The White Lotus season three.

One of the victims this season was Jim Hollinger, played by Scott Glenn, who ended up being Rick’s dad.

Rick (Walton Goggins) shot him at the hotel after they had two previous run-ins, not knowing he was his real father.

Now, Scott is revealing that they filmed one take of the shooting scene where Jim muttered one final word before dying.

Keep reading to find out more…

Scott told THR of the shooting scene, “We shot it different ways. There’s part one version that I died slinking into his arms saying one last word, that they left out. The way it is now, I’m just lying back there. So conceivably, Thailand’s a great medical country. Maybe I could go through a bunch of operations and survive. Who knows! But it...

Image

A Minecraft Movie' Debuts With Unimpressive Rotten Tomatoes Score Amid Lukewarm Critic Reception
Image
A Minecraft Movie is set to enter theaters this week, but it was unable to craft its perfect Rotten Tomatoes debut. As the reviews for the video game feature slowly roll in, it seems like the movie was unable to meet critics' expectations. It will be interesting to see how the audience reacts once it comes out.

According to the film's Rotten Tomatoes page, A Minecraft Movie received a mediocre critics' score of 55% but leans towards the rotten side. Critics were mixed regarding what the film offered, hence its score. In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted with a 46% critics' score when it was released in 2023. However, when the Nintendo feature was released to the public, it was highly praised by fans and became the 2nd highest-grossing film of 2023, just under Barbie by $100 million. Only time will tell if A Minecraft Movie will receive the same results.

A Minecraft...

‘Hell of a Summer’ Review: Finn Wolfhard’s Directorial Debut Is Occasionally Amusing but Mostly Empty
Image
When you hear the phrase “gateway horror,” what comes to mind? The phrase is frequently thrown around when discussing modern cinema, serving as a perhaps gentle way of saying something doesn’t cut all that deep but could lead to discovering other better genre films that do. Typically used to describe the audience’s journey, it ought to also be used to discuss filmmakers who are figuring out their own path into a genre.

In “Hell of a Summer,” the lightly humorous yet oddly undercooked feature debut of co-writers, -directors and -stars Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) and Billy Bryk, every element feels like it’s a gateway to what could be a solid enough film. Alas, despite it trying to take parts of better horror films (including its John Carpenter-esque score), it never arrives there in one piece. The familiar premise, which involves a group of young counselors being...

“He Needs Resolution”: ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Guest Star Explains That Massive Confrontation With Walton Goggins
Image
We’ve waited six episodes to meet the mysterious man at the heart of Rick’s (Walton Goggins) darkest obsession—and when he finally appeared, he did not disappoint. In the penultimate episode of The White Lotus Season 3, Rick finally comes face-to-face with the man his mother told him murdered his father. That man is Jim Hollinger, a powerful expat and founder of the White Lotus hotel chain, played by HBO veteran Scott Glenn, who is best known to audiences these days as Kevin Garvey Sr. from The Leftovers.

In a new interview with Variety, Glenn opened up about his explosive scene with Goggins, the long arc of Jim’s history, and his compelling theory about who came up with the name The White Lotus. In the episode, Rick invades Jim’s home armed with a pistol and decades of rage, convinced the man before him is his father’s killer.

Did ‘The White Lotus’ Just Reference This Season’s ‘Simpsons’ Parody?
Image
Despite the fact that it’s clearly the most cursed tourist destination since Jurassic Park, people just keep checking into The White Lotus.

The third season of Mike White’s acclaimed HBO show boasts an impressive cast — including Parker Posey, Carrie Coon and Walton Goggins — as the newest batch of existential crises-riddled wealthy vacationers.

A few months before the latest installment of The White Lotus premiered, the series was parodied by The Simpsons in the appropriately titled episode “The Yellow Lotus.”

Not much of what happened in “The Yellow Lotus” has been reflected in Season Three of The White Lotus so far. Like, there have been no fatal sea otter attacks, and Sideshow Bob has yet to make a single appearance. But, oddly enough, both shows share one specific thing in common: Barbra Streisand.

As longtime Simpsons writer and producer Al Jean pointed out on social media, the cartoon included...

Emmy shakeup: Sam Rockwell must compete as supporting, not guest, actor for ‘The White Lotus’
Image
When Sam Rockwell popped up in last week's fifth episode of The White Lotus and delivered an instantly classic monologue, Emmy pundits assumed the actor would be a frontrunner to win the Best Drama Guest Actor category. But there's one problem with that assumption: the Emmys have quirky rules.

Because of a regulation enacted in 2015, and recertified in 2024, only performers who appear in fewer than 50 percent of a show's episodes are eligible to contend as a guest star. If someone appears in 50 percent or more, they must submit in supporting or lead. Gold Derby has confirmed that Rockwell appears in Episodes 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the eight-episode season, meaning he cannot be nominated as a guest star.

HBO has declined to comment.

Here is the 2024 version of the ruling:

Guest Performers are defined as appearing in less than 50% of all eligible series episodes. To ensure that a guest performer's role is significant to the episode being submitted,...

Who Killed Tanya in The White Lotus (& Why It Was So Controversial)
Image
Quick LinksIs Tanya in The White Lotus Season 3?Tanya Accidentally Dies After Tripping and Falling Off A YachtDid Greg Try to Get Tanya Killed in The White Lotus?Greg is Secretly The White Lotus' Main Character

Tanya is one of the most fascinating characters in The White Lotus and her controversial death is still the target of heated debates among fans. The HBO show focuses on the chaotic -- and often deadly -- interactions between employees and guests of the luxurious White Lotus Hotel. Every season takes place in a different location: Season 1 was set in Hawaii, Season 2 in Italy, and Season 3 takes the audience to Thailand. In addition, the main cast changes with each season, and a murder mystery is hinted at the beginning of every season premiere.

This compelling formula makes for a great anthology series of the 2020s, but every season of The White Lotus features a returning character.

A Ridiculous Fan Theory May Have Already Confirmed White Lotus Season 3's Killer (& It Actually Makes Perfect Sense)
Image
Quick LinksA Monkey Gets a Hold of a Gun on The White LotusWhy It's More Likely for the Killer to Be a Monkey, Not a Human

The following contains spoilers for The White Lotus Season 3, Episode 3, "The Meaning of Dreams," which premiered Sunday, March 2 on HBO.

While it's still too early to determine who is wielding the gun by the end of The White Lotus Season 3, the first three episodes have established some pretty likely candidates for the position. Rick and Timothy are battling for the number one spot, with Rick harboring intense feelings of revenge that may or may not be directed at Sritala Hollinger's husband and Timothy at risk of going to prison and losing his fortune. Greg (who is going by "Gary" this season) is also a frontrunner now that Belinda is onto him.

Despite these strong candidates, perhaps everyone is looking in the wrong place. It...
