Erykah Badu
Erykah Badu Crafted a New Version of Her Hit Song ‘Tyrone’ for Netflix’s ‘They Cloned Tyrone’ (Video)
Erykah Badu
Erykah Badu re-wrote and re-recorded her hit song “Tyrone” for Netflix’s new movie “They Cloned Tyrone,” per a request from the film’s director Juel Taylor.

“Everybody I’ve ever talked to, as soon as I told them the [movie’s] title, they were like, ‘So Erykah Badu doing the song?’ and I’m like, ‘Trust me, I’m trying.’” Taylor said, describing the early stages of developing “They Cloned Tyrone,” which is his feature film directorial debut and stars Teyonah Parris, John Boyega and Jamie Foxx. At the time, he hoped he would be able to include a reimagined version of the Grammy-winner’s song.

“You don’t really think it’s going to happen,” Taylor said. “Serendipitously enough, I was able to pitch it to her, and she responded immediately. Thank God for Erykah Badu.”

Getting Badu to sign on for the job was done with the help of...

Natascha McElhone Discovers Herself in 'Carmen' Official US Trailer
Image
"No one can blame you for falling in love." Good Deed Entertainment has revealed an official US trailer for the film Carmen, an empowering feminist drama from Malta starring Natascha McElhone. This just premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival and opens in theaters in September. Carmen is perhaps veteran director and accomplished actor Valerie Buhagiar's most joyous film outing yet. Set in a sun-dappled village in Malta in the 1980s, McElhone gives her career-best performance as a 50-year-old woman finding a new start in life through romance. In a small Maltese village, Carmen has looked after her brother, the local priest, for her entire life. When the Church abandons Carmen, she is mistaken for the new priest. Carmen begins to see the world, and herself, in a new light and find loves along the way. Also starring Michaela Farrugia, Steven Love, Richard Clarkin, and Henry Zammit Cordina. This looks a tad cheesy and obvious,...

Honey Bee (2018)
Honey Bee Review: Sex Trafficking Drama Shows a Path to Break the Cycle of Abuse
Honey Bee (2018)
It would be easy to dismiss Rama Rau’s first non-documentary feature Honey Bee as another melodramatically grim look at the consequences of sex trafficking in North America because it does utilize a lot of narrative convenience as far as driving the plot towards its endgame. Doing so, however, would discount the reason why Bonnie Fairweather and Kathleen Hepburn’s script works this way and why the resulting message is more important than the journey to get there. The whole point of portraying young Natalie’s (Julia Sarah Stone) plight is to provide an example for how the cycle of abuse can be broken. It’s not about piling on the tragedy or sweeping her trauma under the rug for some unrealistic rebirth in the aftermath. It’s about growing, healing, and hope.

The decision to therefore bookend the film with scenes at truck stops is crucial. We must witness...

Honey Bee (2018)
Official Trailer for 'Honey Bee' Human Trafficking Dramatic Thriller
Honey Bee (2018)
"Time is money, let's go." Syndicado has debuted the official US trailer for a Canadian film titled Honey Bee, the first feature from acclaimed doc filmmaker Rama Rau. This premiered at the Whistler Film Festival in 2018, and is getting a VOD release this month in the US. Honey Bee is an unpredictable tale of survival that follows the journey of quick-witted "Honey Bee", an underage truck stop sex worker ensnared by her ruthless Romeo-pimp boyfriend. Unwittingly, she is taken into foster care with her new family, Louise and Christian, in a remote rural area in Northern Canada where she discovers there might be more to life than the hand she's been dealt. Rau needed to tell this story as a fictionalized drama because to tell the real stories would put the lives of these girls at risk. Starring Julia Sarah Stone, Martha Plimpton, Peter Outerbridge, Steven Love, and Michelle McLeod.

Do Not See this Film Solo: A Movie Review
Director/writer: Isaac Cravit. Cast: Annie Clark, Daniel Kash, Richard Clarkin, Steven Love and Alyssa Capriotti. Solo is a backwoods thriller, which was released late in 2013. The film primarily focuses on one character, Gillian (Annie Clark), and her overnight stay on an isolated island. Events take on a psychological element, when a stranger appears on the island. Solo is an indie feature with only a few characters. Still, there is suspense and a little mystery here as first time director Isaac Cravit delivers a compelling feature. A little more horror could have been introduced in this film, but Solo does deliver enough tension to warrant film fans' time. The film begins and ends with the protagonist, Gillian. She has hopes of becoming a camp counsellour. However, she must pass an initiation rite, which leaves her alone on an island for two nights. The situation gets a little stranger when Gillian...
