Horror films set in movie theatres have a long and diverse history, starting with old-school films like The Blob and The Tingler to supernatural films like Demons and Porno and slashers such as The Last Matinee and All About Evil. And even as the cinema becomes an endangered species, films like Ian Courtney’s (The Other Side of the Shadows) Movie Theater Massacre continue to get made.

Taking place during the final week of independent theatre Redford’s, before it’s scheduled to close, it opens with a discussion between Val and one of her fellow employees, Nick about streaming vs physical media framed in terms of buying Criterion Blu-rays as opposed to subscribing to The Criterion Channel. He never makes it home to see Dial M for Murder, as a...

Aaron Fradkin at "Val" premiere
Beezel review – impish jump-scare machine follows single house’s horrific history
Aaron Fradkin at "Val" premiere
Episodic tale spanning the decades from the 60s to the 00s is a little unoriginal but is delivered with toxic wit

Although there’s a fair amount of seasonally appropriate snow on display, this horror feature represents a stonking slice of counter-programming for the festive season, given there is nothing merry in the least about it. That said, there are sly flashes of tongue-in-cheek humour throughout from married co-writers Aaron Fradkin (also the film’s director) and Victoria Fratz Fradkin (one of the film’s leads). Consequently, Beezel is an impishly nasty machine for jump scares and creepy just-seen imagery using old-fashioned practical effects. It’s not a terribly original work but does create its own toxic, hypnagogic atmosphere.

Using a mini-museum’s worth of audiovisual recording technology to capture footage – starting with Super8 and advancing to recent digital cameras – the Fradkins create an episodic work that spans several decades.

‘Beezel’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Lejon Woods, Bob Gallagher, Nicolas Robin, Victoria Fratz Fradkin | Written by Victoria Fratz Fradkin | Directed by Aaron Fradkin

Beezel, the latest horror movie released under the “Dread” banner, is a chilling exploration of supernatural horror set in a cursed New England home that has endured decades of sinister occurrences. Directed by Aaron Fradkin and co-written with Victoria Fratz Fradkin, the film centres on the malevolent force of Beezel, a blind, ancient witch lurking beneath the house and tormenting its residents through multiple timelines.

From the outset, the movie wastes no time plunging into its eerie setup. At just 82 minutes long, it’s a tight, fast-paced experience that doesn’t linger on unnecessary exposition. Instead, it jumps between timelines, revealing the history of the house and the sinister force lurking beneath its floorboards. Each timeline brings a new layer of dread, and as the pieces fall into place, the full...

‘Replicator’ Review
Image
Stars: Brey Noelle, Brian Spangler, Jim Azelvandre, Kayla Royko, KateLynn E. Newberry, LeJon Woods | Written by Mark Andrew Hamer, Russ Lindway | Directed by Mark Andrew Hamer

Replicator, the new film from director Mark Andrew Hamer and co-writer Russ Lindway comes with a wonderfully comic book styled poster, a title that makes you think of the Resonator from Lovecraft’s From Beyond and a plot that recalls Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Darby Vincent is having a bad day. First, a judge let the abusive husband of the woman she was representing walk free thanks to the incompetence of Sheriff Williams’ the same married sheriff she’s having an affair with.

Then she comes home to find her father Ron, whom she reluctantly allowed to move in with her, getting it on with Gina. And then goes off on her for interrupting them. It’s obvious that terminal cancer hasn’t...

The Hangman Review: Potential Struggles Against Missteps in the Mountains
Image
Directed by Bruce Wemple and released in 2020, The Hangman tells the story of Leon, a salesman who takes his teenage son Jesse camping in rural West Virginia to repair their troubled relationship. But their trip into the Appalachian wilderness takes a dark turn when Jesse goes missing and Leon discovers the local cult has summoned a malicious demon known as The Hangman. Now Leon must battle not just to rescue his son but to defeat the murderous creatures standing in his way.

On the surface, The Hangman promises a thrilling tale, mixing demonic horror with deeper themes of fatherhood and racial tensions in America. And it does deliver flashes of this, with committed performances from leads LeJon Woods and Mar Cellus breathing empathy into the troubled father-son duo. But where it falls short is in juggling its multitude of moving parts. By the climax, the story has detoured through so...

‘The Hangman’ Review
Image
Stars: Scott Callenberger, LeJon Woods, Mar Cellus, Ameerah Briggs, Kaitlyn Lunardi, Rob Cardazone, Lindsey Dresbach, Jefferson Cox, Daniel Martin Berkey, William Shuman | Written by Bruce Wemple, LeJon Woods | Directed by Bruce Wemple

The Hangman opens with a nod to Fulci’s The Beyond, as a title card informs us that there are seven known gateways to Hell. The one we’re concerned with here isn’t under a hotel in New Orleans, though, it’s somewhere in a nameless part of the mountains of West Virginia.

That’s followed by some cultists pulling something out of that portal, a creature we then see transform a couple of junkies from strung out to strung up. Meet The Hangman.

Oblivious to all of this, Leon and his son Jesse are going on a father and son weekend in the mountains. Unfortunately, the first night goes badly, ending in recriminations over the death...

‘Island Escape’ Review
Image
Stars: Chris Cimperman, Ariella Mastroianni, Michael L. Parker, LeJon Woods, Renee Gagner, James Liddell, Grant Schumacher, Michael L. Parker | Written and Directed by Bruce Wemple

Most of writer/director Bruce Wemple’s films fall into one of two categories. There are films about cryptids like Dawn of the Beast and The Retreat. And there are films dealing with abnormalities with time such as The Tomorrow Job and Lake Artifact.

Island Escape seems to be an attempt to bring the two themes together with this story of an accident at a research base on the Isle of Gran Manan. We know something is really wrong as the prologue shows a helicopter pilot being killed by what appears to be a bestial version of himself who then tries to fly off in the chopper only to have it explode in mid-air.

Meanwhile, after a barfight, Chase is approached by Alison who claims...

Louis Mandylor in Anti-Hero Action Film 'Bring Him Back Dead' Trailer
Gary Daniels in Misfire (2014)
"Where are the diamonds?!?!" Uncork'd Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an action crime thriller titled Bring Him Back Dead, another of these direct-to-video junk movies they're whipping out all the time. A violent gang of criminals is ordered, after a botched heist, to track down and eliminate the man who betrayed them and ran off with their loot. Action veteran Gary Daniels stars as the "anti-hero" of the film, while Louis Mandylor plays the leader of the gang, and Daniel Baldwin a man with mysterious motives. The distributor tries to hype this up: "Non-stop action, three bonafide action legends, and Mark Savage at the helm? A must-see for action fans!" The cast also includes Katie Keene, Ryan M. Shaw, LeJon Woods, Zhuzha Akova, and Chris Torem. This looks absolutely terrible, but sometimes I think that's the point. Who watches these awful films anyway? It's not worth even a 0.99 rental price.

‘Dawn of the Beast’ Review
Image
Stars: Adrian Burke, Ariella Mastroianni, Grant Schumacher, Anna Shields, Francesca Anderson, Chris Cimperman, Willard Morgan, LeJon Woods | Written by Anna Shields | Directed by Bruce Wemple

It would seem that the legend of Bigfoot just won’t go away, every decade seems to bring with a new sighting of the monster and a wealth of new films about the subject. And this decade is no different… In fact, Dawn of the Beast is not the first Bigfoot movie we’ve reviewed in the past year and undoubtedly won’t be the last.

Actually the reason this isn’t the first Bigfoot film we’ve reviewed in the past year is because about 8 months ago we covered a Bigfoot film called Monstrous, which was directed by Bruce Wemple and written by Anna Shields. And guess what? Dawn of the Beast is from the pair too! And they’ve thrown in the wendigos from Wemple’s other film,...

Old Fashioned movie review: how would Jesus date?
Old-fashioned is right. Like how the Taliban is old-fashioned. Behold some pretty despicable passive-aggressive othering of women in the name of “respect.” I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of “faith-based” movies

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

So, this is the film being offered up as the Christian alternative to Fifty Shades of Grey. Which turns out to be rather appropriate, for the “hero” of Old Fashioned is his own sort of controlling, demanding, and precisely, meticulously detailed about how women may and may not interact with him. He’s got a lot of rules that must be followed. It’s just that here, those rules come from Jesus in some nebulous, undefined way.

Clay (Rik Swartzwelder) “made a promise to never be alone with any women that’s not my wife,” he tells Amber (Elizabeth Ann Roberts), by...
