Ghosts of the Ozarks review – shrewd Twin Peaksy allegory that musters dark forces
Matt Glass
This supernatural thriller digs deep into the underbelly of a weird backwoods idyll

Developed from a 2016 short, Matt Glass and Jordan Wayne Long’s post-us Civil War supernatural thriller isn’t just atmospheric and characterful, it’s an often shrewd allegory of the US self-image as the shining “city on a hill”. Thomas Hobson plays James McCune, a black doctor and war veteran nurturing physical and psychological wounds, who is summoned by his Uncle Matthew (Phil Morris) to a post in Norfolk, a walled town sequestered deep in the Ozark forest. When he arrives, he is shocked to encounter a biracial paradise where, as the preachy saloon murals have it, “To each their purpose”. But there are strict rules, imposed by Matthew, about venturing beyond the palisade where horned ghosts are apt to emerge from banks of red fog with a particular hunger for local troublemakers. As another mural counsels,...

Set shortly after the Civil War, Ghosts of the Ozarks is an expanded version of the 2016 short of the same name, and with some of the same cast. James ‘Doc’ McCune (Thomas Hobson; I’ll Be Watching) has been invited by his uncle Matthew to come to the town of Norfolk, Arkansas. He says it’s a wonderful place to live, a veritable Utopia, and they need a doctor.

But on his way there something spooks his horse and it runs off. Then he’s attacked in the woods by Micah (Scott Dean; 12 Hour Shift) who is fixing to kill him before something unseen pulls him into a strange red mist. He soon finds out...

“You Cannot Kill David Arquette” Is A Fascinating Documentary About The Actor Tackling Wrestling Once Again
David Arquette
David Arquette is known for a few things. He’s best recognized as Deputy Dewey Riley in the Scream franchise of films, of course. However, he’s also famous, or perhaps infamous, for being an actor who cameoed for a time in World Championship Wrestling (better known as WCW). Not only did he get in the ring, but a storyline had him win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, something that wrestling fans hated with a vicious passion. Not only did this halt whatever wrestling career the passionate fan of the sport had, it torpedoed his ascent in Hollywood, as well. The new documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette not just tackles this bit of his history, but his recent decision to try and wrestle again, all in an effort to get some measure of respect. If it sounds silly, it’s actually surprisingly empathetic and emotional. The movie is a documentary about,...

Watch: New Fun Size Horror Short Film 'Loop' Directed by Mali Elfman
Many filmmakers have hidden metaphors about the challenges and struggles as a filmmaker in their work. Loop is a clever little horror short film made by Mali Elfman, daughter of composer Danny Elfman, who has been making movies for the past few years - primarily for the site Fun Size Horror. Her latest film is a metaphorical tale about her own experiences trying to become a filmmaker. It will all make sense when you watch it. Nothing groundbreaking, but it is a intriguing short that does say more when you understand the metaphorical angst being expressed. This also features some great music composed by Matt Glass. Enjoy. Description from YouTube: "a metaphorical [story that the director] describes as what it feels like trying to become a filmmaker." Loop is written & directed by producer-filmmaker-actress Mali Elfman (find her on Twitter @malielfman), who first started out writing about movies on a blog and is now making them.
