Tim Gunn
With zero Emmy nominations, Bravo’s ‘Project Runway’ revamp may be more out than in, claims one report
Tim Gunn
After a shaky start, season 17 of the re-designed “Project Runway” settled into the groove earlier this year after returning to Bravo and mostly satisfied longtime fans on the Gold Derby site. Yes, they missed mentor Tim Gunn and host Heidi Klum, whose new Amazon web-only fashion series, “Making the Cut,” will premiere next year. But they especially warmed to Christian Siriano, winner of Season 4 in 2007, who expertly filled the avuncular Gunn’s fashionable shoes as a contestant advocate.

A poll revealed that 54% of the show’s fans appreciated how Siriano quickly settled into his role and proved to be an invaluable adviser to the designers. And 13% thought the final runway show featuring winning designer Sebastian Grey, Hester Sunshine and Garo Sparo was one of the best ever.

Therefore it is a bit disappointing to read a Page 6 report in the “Daily News” that “Project Runway” might be endangered, given its...

54% pick mentor Christian Siriano as the high point of Bravo’s revamped ‘Project Runway’ [Poll Results]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
‘Project Runway’ 17 might be history, now that Colombian designer Sebastian Grey handily won the season with his sophisticated and cohesive collection of wearable upscale outfits inspired by his homeland. But we wanted to know how fans felt about the changes to the reality show staple now that it has returned to Bravo.

Yes, more than a few long-time viewers — 12% of those who voted in our poll — found the changes to be somewhat jarring, especially the fact that mentor Tim Gunn and host Heidi Klum are gone. Here’s hoping that news of their collaboration with Amazon on a fashion series will arrive soon. But those who left comments had more positive than negative to say about the additions to the show.

A typical comment was shared by Victoria Ekholm, who wrote: “I did miss Tim Gunn, a fabulous mentor and teacher, but I thought Christian did great for a first-time mentor.

‘Project Runway’ video recap: The rebooted show deserves bravos, and Christian Siriano should take a bow!
Sebastian Grey in Projet Haute Couture (2004)
“Sebastian Grey was the winner of Season 17 of ‘Project Runway’ to the surprise of not many people, I would say,” notes Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery. “He was the frontrunner in our odds and I thought he had a really excellent collection – although not necessarily my favorite of the three. But I thought he was a deserving winner.”

His fellow senior editor Susan Wloszczyna also thought his win was pretty much inevitable, given that “he was the most consistent and sophisticated, and for once, he really didn’t second guess himself very much.”

What the other two contestants didn’t do was make a totally cohesive collection. But while runner-up Hester Sunshine’s kitschy-cute designs could not have come from anyone else, corset king and third-place finisher Garo Sparo seemed to tone down his trademark cinched-waists looks a bit. Or, as Daniel says, “I wanted more Garo in Garo’s collection.

'Project Runway' Finds the "American Dream" in Winner Sebastian Grey
Sebastian Grey in Projet Haute Couture (2004)
"Felicitaciones," murmured Elle magazine editor-in-chief Nina García to Sebastian Grey when he was announced as the winner of the rebooted 17th season of Project Runway last night on Bravo. "As a Latina, I am so proud of the story that you have told. You are the personification of the American dream," García told the Colombian émigré-turned-janitor-turned-competition winner. "You came to this country, you worked really hard and you are standing here as a winner on talent alone."

Grey bested finalists Hester Sunshine and Garo Sparo, who proved strong competition, both ...

Who Won Project Runway Season 17?
Sebastian Grey in Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Well, all we have to say is that the Project Runway judges made the right decision.  Sebastian Grey was just named the winner of season 17 of the reality competition in its first year back on Bravo, beating Hester Sunshine and Garo Sparo for that title after the three finalists showed their final collections.  Garo, with unfinished zippers and ill-fitting clothes (and after he got rid of the one dress the judges had really liked), wasn't even a part of the conversation in the end, and it didn't really sound like Hester had a chance, as the judges had critiques for her, but almost nothing to say about Sebastian's polished lineup.  Hester, however, will be fine, as she found herself...

‘Project Runway’ finale recap: Did the right designer win after ‘The Final Runway’? [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
It’s been three months, and the end is here! “Project Runway” concluded its 17th season on Thursday night with “The Final Runway.” It was an especially meaningful moment since this season marked the return of the series to Bravo after spending the last 10 years on Lifetime. It was also the first season without original host Heidi Klum and mentor Tim Gunn, who were replaced by Karlie Kloss and Christian Siriano, respectively. So how did the show wrap up? Did the right designer win? Scroll down for our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

Last week the judges sent home Bishme Cromartie, narrowing down the show to the final three: Hester Sunshine, Garo Sparo and Sebastian Grey. I was surprised by the judges’ choice in “One Elle of a Day” given how consistent Cromartie had been all season: only one low score and then one final...

Project Runway Finale: Who Will Win Season 17? And Who Should Win?
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
With Bishme Croartie’s emotional elimination already a distant memory, only three talented designers remain in the running to win Project Runway Season 17.

Statistically speaking, all three competitors — Garo Sparo, Sebastian Grey and Hester Sunshine — have earned their place in the finale. Hester has won three individual competitions this season, while Garo and Sebastian have each won two. For the most part, they’ve also managed to avoid falling into the bottom two, save for Garo’s slip-up in Episode 10 and Hester’s in Episode 12. (Sebastian, meanwhile, has never been directly up for elimination.)

If the judges’ comments in the...

Is Sebastian Grey a lock to win ‘Project Runway’ or can Hester Sunshine or Garo Sparo surprise?
Sebastian Grey in Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Can anyone beat Sebastian Grey on “Project Runway”? Even when he doubted himself so much he was tempted to quit the show entirely, he has been one of the judges’ favorite designers, and now that the show is down to its final three contestants going into tonight’s season finale he seems stronger than ever. As of this writing he gets leading odds of 8/15, according to the combined forecasts of over a hundred “Runway” fans who have made their predictions here in our predictions center. Do Garo Sparo or Hester Sunshine stand a chance?

There was a surprise last week in the penultimate episode of the season. In a final challenge to decide which three designers would get to show their collections out of the four finalists, we assumed Sunshine was in trouble. Before the final four she had a couple of rough challenges that threatened to derail her progress.

Who are ‘Project Runway’ fans rooting for in tonight’s finale? They say the winner should be … [Poll Results]
Sebastian Grey in Projet Haute Couture (2004)
The “Project Runway” judges may have a tough time picking a winner in tonight’s season finale, but fans of the show sure don’t have a problem deciding. We asked our readers who they think should win the grand prize, and it was a landslide result: give the title to Sebastian Grey. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.

A whopping 82% of respondents think the Colombian designer should prevail, and he has come arguably the longest way. He opened two shops in his home country that shuttered, but you would never know he struggled from the quality of his work, which has been there since day one. He’s the only designer who never got a single low score from the judges, even in weeks when he thought he was a goner, like his confused streetwear look in “High Fashion to High Street” and his sculptural art installation...

‘Project Runway’ recap: The penultimate episode was ‘One Elle of a Day,’ full of blood, sweat and tears – literally!
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Last week “Project Runway” narrowed down season 17 to its four finalists: Bishme Cromartie, Sebastian Grey, Garo Sparo and Hester Sunshine. Those four will present their 10-look collections for a shot at the grand prize … Actually, scratch that. Only three of them will present their collections. After working for five months back home, the four returned to New York City for one final challenge to decide the top three. I, for one, am not a fan of sending only three designers to the finale at this point. It’s one thing to eliminate a designer, but it’s quite another to let them work for almost half a year on a collection and then eliminate them. Let’s consider each designer’s trials, tribulations and triumphs one by one below.

Project Runway Recap: Which Designers Are Going to the Season 17 Finale?
Garo Sparo
And then there were three. Thursday’s Project Runway, the first half of Season 17’s two-part finale, sent home one last contestant, setting the stage for next week’s three-way melee.

After receiving $10,000 to produce their 10-look collections, the four remaining designers — Bishme Cromartie, Garo Sparo, Hester Sunshine and Sebastian Grey — went their separate ways and immediately got down to business. And aside from Christian Siriano’s brief hometown visits, including a pilgrimage to the legendary gay island known as Fort Lauderdale, the contestants were mostly left to their own devices.

And just when the foursome started to get comfortable,...

No surprises here!  A whopping 65% of ‘Project Runway’ fashionistas covet a Sebastian Grey custom design [Poll Results]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
We aren’t saying that Sebastian Grey is the best designer of Season 17 of “Project Runway” and most likely to win. It is too early for that, what with two more episodes to go before a decision has been made. But there is a reason that the congenial Colombian-born transplant got the lion’s share of votes – 65% to be exact — from fans who would be very happy to have him whip up a custom ensemble for them.

The dude is consistent and can make a well-constructed design with a minimum of drama. It makes sense that most picked Sebastian, who has won two challenges, since he is the only designer who has never landed in the bottom with a bad critique. Coming in a distant second is corset king Garo Sparo with 15% preferring he would make their outfit. He also has won two challenges but has had a low score twice as well.

Now that ”Project Runway’ has its final 4, which designer would you want to make you a custom outfit? [Poll]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
‘Project Runway’ fans had to say ta-ta to minimalist maiden Tessa Clark last week. She somehow never quite took the judges’ comments to heart. Still, I will always be indebted to her for bringing the philosophy of wabi-sabi into my life — the art of leaving things like hems unfinished and incomplete. I might stop writing this item in her honor right now but I won’t.

But that got me thinking of who among the four designers would I choose to create a custom ensemble of my very own. Would it be the Colombian sultan of stitching Sebastian Grey, the only designer who never landed in the bottom group on a challenge? How about corset king Garo Sparo, one of the few contestants who won’t flinch when to clothe a curvier client?

‘Project Runway’: Top 4 reasons Bishme Cromartie could win season 17
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Bishme Cromartie is in the final four on “Project Runway,” but he doesn’t call as much attention to himself as his three rivals. He doesn’t have the outlandish, instantly identifiable aesthetics of corset king Garo Sparo or candy-colored Hester Sunshine. And he’s not as fretful in the workroom as Sebastian Grey. But going into the final challenge of the season, I can’t shake the feeling that he might peak at exactly the right time and win the whole thing. Here are my top four reasons why.

He has the most artistic range — In “The Art of Fashion,” guest judge Linda Fargo praised Cromartie for his wide variety of looks. That will come in handy when putting together his 10-look final collection. He has perhaps the greatest potential to wow the judges with a wide array of looks.

‘Project Runway’ video recap: The Top 5 designers get more than a little antsy over being arty [Watch]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Season 17 of “Project Runway” is winding down and the 12th episode that aired on May 30, “The Art of Fashion,” not only found the Top 5 contestants — Garo Sparo, Sebastian Grey, Bishme Cromartie, Hester Sunshine and Tessa Clark — having to come up with a bigger and bolder outfit than ever before, but also conjuring thematic art installation to complement their design. The stakes were especially high since the outcome of the challenge would determine which four would make it to the finale and get to show their own fashion line. Not only that, rapper Cardi B was in the house — or, in this case, warehouse.

“This was another one of those weird, kind of conceptual challenges,” notes Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery. “It was a mixed bag in the workroom. It looked like everyone was a mess. Everyone was an emotional wreck. They were freaking out. They hated the work they were doing.

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘The Art of Fashion’ and the science of deciding the final four [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Five went in, but how many came out? In episode 12 of “Project Runway,” titled “The Art of Fashion,” Garo Sparo, Hester Sunshine, Bishme Cromartie, Tessa Clark and Sebastian Grey competed for spots in the final four. So who will get to show their collections in the finale, and who flunked their final art class? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

This was another odd challenge for the designers to wrap their heads around. Their task was to create “experiential” looks that would be displayed as part of art installations at the Riverside Warehouse. Such an unusual, conceptual challenge meant the designers had to think outside of the box even as their designs would end up displayed in dioramas inside of boxes. That sounded like an ideal challenge for contestants like Garo and Hester, whose designs are conceptually adventurous even on normal days,...

Is Tessa toast on ‘Project Runway’? Fans say she’ll be eliminated in 5th place
Tessa Clark was a rock star on “Project Runway” at the start of the season, winning the very first challenge in the premiere episode. But it has been a rough few weeks for the minimalist designer, and it actually started when she had to design for a rock star in “The Stitch is Back.” Now with only five designers left in the competition it’s not looking too good for her. We think she’s about to be eliminated.

As of this writing Clark gets leading odds of 31/20 of being sent home. Those odds are calculated from the combined predictions of “Runway” fans we’ve polled every week here in our predictions center, and the vast majority of them say Clark’s days are numbered. It was smooth sailing for her through the first eight challenges, but the judges thought she played it too safe with her Elton John performance outfit in “Stitch is Back.

Garo Sparo moves up in our ‘Project Runway’ odds, so is he now Sebastian’s biggest threat?
Garo Sparo
For weeks our “Project Runway” odds have indicated a two-way race between the consistent polish of Sebastian Grey and the adventurous eccentricity of Hester Sunshine. However, with only five designers left in the competition, Sunshine has plummeted, while Garo Sparo has moved up. Now we’re predicting an all-male top three. Do you agree with this sudden shift? Make or update your own predictions here before Thursday night’s new episode.

Our odds are calculated by combining the predictions of “Runway” fans we poll every week in our predictions center, and this week they’re still high on Grey’s chances. In last week’s 11th challenge, “New York City of Dreams,” he had to create a look for an NYC civic employee that pushed its creativity to its limits. His client wanted a vintage Disney princess feel, which Grey had to translate into a look that felt modern and also true to his aesthetic.

Does ‘Project Runway’s’ experiential challenge sound confusing? Wait until you hear about Hester’s bondage picnic! [Video]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Last week’s “Project Runway” had a very precise and easy-to-grasp challenge for the six remaining designers: Make a custom dream dress for a hard-working female civic worker who keeps New York City up and running. Jamall Osterholm was sent away when his ill-fitting design did his curvy ferry dock worker few favors.

But, judging from the preview at the end of the episode, I hadn’t any idea of what an experiential fashion show actually means. Thank goodness, the folks at Bravo provided two clips to give the unhip among us a clue what to expect this week.

In the video below, host Karlie Kloss greets the Top 5 contestants — Sebastian Grey, Garo Sparo, Bishme Cromartie, Hester Sunshine and Tessa Clark — and reminds them that the end of the competition is near. But first, she explains what they will be doing this week.

‘Project Runway’ video recap: We dream a dream where Tessa does what she is told and Jamall can actually sew!
Daniel Montgomery
Whenever “Project Runway” designers are tasked to make an outfit to please a real woman, it is often one of the hardest challenges of the season. For one, they have to fulfill their client’s wishes while also keeping true to their aesthetic in order to please the judges. Plus, they have to deal with shapes and sizes that don’t usually don’t walk down runways.

As Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery points out, “The challenge involved designing a dream dress for the hard-working women of New York City.” Namely, a cop, an Emt, a postal worker, a sanitation worker, a school teacher and a ferry deckhand. As he says, “It was like the Village People of New York City infrastructure.” The six contestants left on the show — Sebastian Grey, Tessa Clark, Garo Sparo, Jamall Osterholm, Bishme Cromartie and Hester Sunshine — had to make a fancy dress that...

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘New York City of Dreams’ celebrated civic workers, but which dream turned into a nightmare? [Updating Live Blog]
A cop, an Emt, a postal worker, a sanitation worker, a school teacher and a ferry deckhand walk into a bar. The cop says, “What are we doing in this bar? We’ve got a runway to get to!” … Okay, so my comedy needs work, but the work that really matters in NYC is done by the public employees “Project Runway” celebrated with this week’s challenge. In “New York City of Dreams,” the six remaining designers had to create dream dresses for the hard-working women who keep the city running. So whose dreams came true, and whose dreams turned into nightmares? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

The six designers who went into this week’s episode were Colombian craftsman Sebastian Grey, minimalist maven Tessa Clark, corset-crazed Garo Sparo, urban puffer king Jamall Osterholm, Baltimore’s favorite son Bishme Cromartie and eccentric extraordinaire Hester Sunshine.

Are we underestimating Bishme on ‘Project Runway’? He may be a threat to win the season after 2 challenge victories
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
After 10 weeks of competition on “Project Runway” there are only two designers who have won multiple design challenges. Hester Sunshine has prevailed three times, and according to our odds, she and Sebastian Grey are battling it out for front-runner status. Meanwhile, Bishme Cromartie just won his second challenge last week, but he’s stuck in fourth place in our odds. I think we may be underestimating him.

Cromartie flew under the radar early on, getting nothing but safe scores for the first four weeks. But the “High Fashion to High Street” challenge in week five put him on the judges’ radar. He won that episode with a dramatically structured jacket that paid tribute to his neighborhood in Baltimore. A couple of weeks later he was nearly eliminated for an “Elegance is the New Black” design that had too many ideas for its own good, but that turned out to be a momentary lapse.

‘Project Runway’ 17 preview clips: Designer Tessa Clark is in deep denial over her black obsession
For Tessa Clark, there is no new black. Only the original will do. That is why she goes back again and again to the pitch-dark hue for her designs for “Project Runway.” However, in the clip below from Thursday’s upcoming episode, “New York City of Dreams,” Clark, a Ohio native with her own line of womenswear whose only win was on the very first episode, is in a bit of denial over her over-reliance on the color.

Leave it to Hester Sunshine, who is at the top with three wins so far this season, to call out the only other female contestant left on the show. This week’s challenge is to design a dream dress for women who are civic workers in the Big Apple — cop, Emt worker, postal worker, firefighter, etc. Tessa says to her fellow designers about how bright the runway show will be this week.

‘Project Runway’ video recap: Designs that make fashion statements and support a cause while fitting to a T
As Season 17 of “Project Runway” begins to wind down with four more episodes to go in its return to Bravo, episode 10 that aired on May 16 proved to be one of the more passionate and satisfying shows yet. That’s because the challenge — to make an outfit that represents a cause ranging from Lbgt issues and racial equality to the endangered status of bees and the #MeToo movement — inspired designs that proved to be more personal than usual.

That didn’t mean that a few of the remaining seven contestants still fell short in accomplishing their assignment, which included making a logo T-shirt that complimented the main ensemble that they themselves wore down the runway. As usual, Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna got right down in discussing the worst and the best of the night in the video above.

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘What Do You Care About?’ asked designers to take a stand, but who stood out the most? [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
“Project Runway” is down to the cream of the crop. In tonight’s 10th episode, “What Do You Care About?,” the final seven designers were asked to take a stand. This challenge demanded looks inspired by a cause they believed in, so whose statement piece was the most outstanding, and who stood out in all the wrong ways? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

This week the designers were mentored by Elaine Welteroth, who helped turn Teen Vogue from simply a fashion magazine into a political voice for the younger generation. So this task required the contestants to dig deep, get emotional and get personal. And it wasn’t just the looks on their models that had to be personal. This episode put the designers themselves on display since they also had to create looks for themselves to wear.

‘Project Runway’ video recap: ‘The Stitch is Back’ in an Elton John bling binge and so is Mood mascot Swatch! [Watch]
Elton John
Yowsa! Gorgeous male models in the work room and Swatch the Mood mascot finally getting the cameo we have been longing for on episode 9 of “Project Runway’s” return on Bravo. This week, the final eight designers were tasked with what was probably the most fun challenge so far on Season 17 — making outlandish performance costumes fit for Sir Elton John circa ’70s and ’80s, whose life is the basis of the upcoming movie “Rocketman.”

As Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery notes, “First of all, I love the menswear challenges. Not just because of male models, but because it’s fun to watch the show and imagine myself in the clothes. I suppose I could wear one of those long ball gowns and really channel my inner Billy Porter at the Oscars, but menswear challenges are still more up my alley.”

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘The Stitch is Back’ in Elton John challenge, and boy-crazy designers were thirsty for male models [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
As a man who enjoys fashion and costumes, I’m always excited when “Project Runway” does menswear, but I probably wasn’t as excited as the designers were for their Elton John challenge in “The Stitch is Back.” Bravo previewed just how thirsty the designers were for their hunky models. But did that keep them from getting their work done? By the end of the episode, who was “Still Standing,” and who said “Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

On paper, an Elton John challenge sounded ideal for avant garde menswear designer Jamall Osterholm, who desperately needed another comeback after getting stuck at the bottom of the heap during last week’s “Blame it on Rio” team challenge when he had immunity. Garo Sparo‘s extravagant, corseted club looks also seemed like they would be a perfect fit — literally and figuratively.

Third time’s the charm: Our ‘Project Runway’ odds say Hester is Finally the front-runner after 3 challenge wins
Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Jesse Eisenberg, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Jemaine Clement, Will.i.am, and Francisco Ramos in Rio (2011)
Hester Sunshine is the only “Project Runway” designer this season so far who has won more than one challenge, and now she has won three: “All the Rage,” “Power Play” and “Blame it on Rio.” For weeks “Runway” fans who have made their predictions here in our predictions center have been skeptical about Sunshine’s chances, but not anymore. She has skyrocketed to the top of of our odds this week. Do you agree? You can contribute to our racetrack odds by placing your bets here.

As far as our readers are concerned, “Runway” is now a two-way race between Sunshine and the so-far consistent Sebastian Grey. Going into last week’s “Rio” episode we thought Grey would duke it out with Renee Hill to win the whole series, but then Hill was shockingly eliminated in another fraught team challenge — death to team challenges! Justice for Kate! ‘Project Runway’s’ unluckiest model keeps getting tragic outfits because designers don’t like curvy women
Fashion is fickle, so “Project Runway” always has its ups and downs, but throughout this season the person I feel has gotten the short end of the stick isn’t one of the designers, it’s one of the models. Kate has been subjected to one bad outfit after another, and it’s not because she’s incapable of wearing clothes. It’s because the designers seem incapable of dressing full-figured women.

This season’s models have diverse sizes, shapes, races and even gender identities (Mimi is the show’s first transgender model), but it has been a recurring theme all season: the designers are scared to death of curvy women. In the season premiere Kate was dressed by Frankie Lewis and ended up in an infamous blue body suit that was practically falling apart.

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘Blame it on Rio,’ or blame it on those damn team challenges? [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
“Project Runway” is down to its final nine contestants … hey, nine is divisible by three, so why not have another team challenge? In “Blame it on Rio,” the designers split up into three teams to design mini-collections for celebrity client Morena Baccarin‘s Rio de Janeiro vacation. So who had a fantastic voyage, and who booked a flight back home? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

The last team challenge was back in episode two, “The Future is Here,” when there were still 15 designers in the competition. The results were, shall we say, mixed. Tessa Clark, Sebastian Grey and Afa Ah Loo wowed the judges with their futuristic designs highlighting sci-fi body modifications, but Hester Sunshine drove her team crazy with her fabric madness, and the trio of Renee Hill, Frankie Lewis and Kovid Kapoor couldn’t communicate and ended up at the bottom,...

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘Elegance is the New Black,’ but one designer had a total fashion blackout [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Episode seven of “Project Runway” was all about elegance. I guess you could say that every episode of “Project Runway” is supposed to be about elegance, but in this case the designers were tasked with a unique interpretation of elegance that would also compete for audience votes in a flash sale challenge. So who proved that “Elegance is the New Black,” and whose look was a fashion blackout? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

It looked like Jamall Osterholm was in trouble coming into this week’s show. He was in the bottom three for the last two weeks, and no one this season has survived three trips to the bottom of the judges’ scores (Kovid Kapoor and Rakan Shams Aldeen were all out on their third strike). Every challenge is a clean slate, but the “Project Runway” fans we polled...

‘Project Runway’ 17 video recap: Which designers powered up and who fell short in a femme-forward gaming challenge [Watch]
Le Jeu de la puissance (1978)
Over-sexed video-game vixens are out. Strong yet chic female heroines are in. That is what we learned while watching “Power Play,” the sixth episode of the 17th season of “Project Runway.” Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery, who is wise in the ways of current gaming culture, and Susan Wloszczyna, whose last video-game experience was probably “Donkey Kong,” debate the outcome of which designers powered up and who was out of lives in the fashion game.

“It was good news for Hester Sunshine,” Daniel noted of the designer who probably has the most playful aesthetic. “She won the challenge — her second win of the season. But bad news for Rakan Aldeen, who once again landed in the bottom three and was this time eliminated.”

‘Project Runway’ 17: Are you shocked by Hester Sunshine’s rise to the top? And did she deserve her 2nd win? [Poll]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
This week on “Project Runway,” the harshest and most senior judge on the show, “Elle’ magazine’s editor-in-chief Nina Garcia, revealed that she has developed an itch for contestant Hester Sunshine‘s kitsch, and that bodes well for the 34-year-old Santa Fe-based designer. Her unique — dare we say kooky — sensibility was a bit of a liability in the early episodes. Also holding Hester back was her lack of confidence in her own vision, a fall-out from being kicked out of the Parsons School of Design in her junior year there.

On the premiere, Hester seemed to be flailing after she regretted choosing plastic organza as her fabric, especially after she tried to iron it. She was partly responsible for her three-person team’s less-than-successful outfits for episode 2’s futuristic challenge. Mentor Christian Siriano damned the blue ensembles as being too bridesmaid. Still, Hester squeaked by both times as part of the “in” crowd of designers,...

‘Project Runway’ Episode 6 recap: Designers had to make a ‘Power Play’ with a strong video-game vixen — but who hears ‘game over’?
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Last week on ‘Project Runway,’ luxury streetwear proved to be embullient Kovid Kapoor‘s downfall but Bishme Cromartie was inspired by his Baltimore roots to make an urban outfit whose standout piece was a sparkly blue bomber jacket (head to Nineteenth Admendment to buy a copy for $300 if you wish). Others earning high scores were Venny Etienne, whose cool outfit was inspired by a sneaker, and Garo Sparo (loved his cinched corset). But among the bottom dwellers were Jamall Osterholm, who didn’t even finish sewing his design, and Rakan Shams Aldeen, who didn’t really meet the requirements of the challenge. Let’s see if these two redeem themselves on our episode 6 recap of Season 17, “Power Play.” All times are Eastern.

‘Project Runway’: We dish on which designers took a wrong turn with luxury streetwear and how to solve a problem like Kovid [Watch Video Recap]
Daniel Montgomery
Luxury streetwear might sound like an oxymoron, but not on “Project Runway” episode 5 that bore the title “High Fashion to High Street.” Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna got down to the nitty gritty quickly when it came to the designers who struggled with the challenge — especially since they were given only 11 hours to complete their outfit. They did save some time since their fabric choices were on display in their workspace area. But no buying of material meant no sign of Swatch, Mood’s Boston Terrier mascot yet again on season 17.

Ok. let’s focus on the designer who will be leaving our midst. “Sadly, my beloved Kovid Kapoor, who seems like a delightful, joyous, ball of sunshine human, was eliminated,” says Daniel with sadness. He notes that he and Susan might disagree on this issue. “You thought the judges were spot on. I didn’t...

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘High Fashion to High Street’ brought Dapper designs to urban looks [Updating Live Blog]
Dapper Dan
The “Project Runway” designers came in out of the cold in episode five, “High Fashion to High Street.” After last week’s unconventional materials challenge in the woods the dozen remaining contestants stepped up … to the streets. So who finished the challenge on easy street, and who was told to hit the bricks? Find out below in our live blog for all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

“High Street” introduced the designers to Dapper Dan, a Harlem fashion icon who brought together the worlds of sophisticated design and casual streetwear. And that was the challenge: to create their own interpretations of luxury streetwear. But that wasn’t the most difficult part. The designers also had an even bigger time crunch than usual: they only had until midnight that night to finish their looks.

Will ‘Project Runway’ designers Bishme and Jamall finally get their first judges’ critiques?
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Sometimes no news is good news. After four weeks of competition “Project Runway” designers Bishme Cromartie and Jamall Osterholm are the only two remaining who haven’t gotten a single critique from the judges yet. That’s good news in the sense that neither designer has gotten a low score thus far, but it also means that neither of them has stood out enough to get a high score. Are they due for recognition — or a tongue-lashing — in week five?

Flying under the radar in the middle of the pack is better than only being singled out for your mistakes. That has been the case for Garo Sparo and Sonia Kasparian, whose only critiques thus far have been negative. And poor Kovid Kapoor has been on an emotional roller coaster, landing in the bottom two, then the top three, then back to the bottom two over the last three weeks.

All the Rage (1999)
‘Project Runway’ recap: Designers had to ‘Survive in Style’ or die trying in unconventional materials challenge [Updating Live Blog]
All the Rage (1999)
After futuristic body modifications and full-body prints, it was time for the “Project Runway” designers to tackle the dreaded unconventional materials challenge in tonight’s episode, “Survive in Style.” And there was yet another twist: this challenge would take place entirely outdoors, including the sewing, sleeping and even the runway show itself. So how did they do? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

One of the big questions entering this week’s challenge was the fate of Hester Sunshine. After two weeks of seeming disorganized and unsure of herself and her fabric choices, she redeemed herself by winning “All the Rage” with a playful, polished look in a red and white print that was like Red Riding Hood at a Parisian picnic. But was that win just a fluke or would she be able to follow it up with another success...

She had it coming: A week after ‘Project Runway’ fans sided with Nadine, they’re glad she was eliminated [Poll Results]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
One day you’re in, and the next you’re out. Nowhere was that “Project Runway” catchphrase more evident than in the rise and fall of Nadine Ralliford, who was one of the front-runners to win the season early on according to our users, but who was eliminated last week in 14th place. We asked fans what they thought of that outcome, and they overwhelmingly agreed with the judges’ decision to send her home, even though the week before our readers thought she was on the right side of a heated conflict. Scroll down for our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.

Ralliford seemed irritated for most of her time on “Runway,” but our readers thought her frustration was justified in “The Future is Here,” during which she was assigned to a team with Hester Sunshine. Ralliford’s design was compromised by Sunshine’s demands for a particular fabric,...

Battle of the sexes: 64% say a male designer will have the ‘Project Runway’ 17 win all sewn up, but who will it be? [Poll]
Those longtime devotees of “Project Runway” know that more women than men have won the fashion-forward reality competition show since it first aired in 2004 – 9 vs. 7.

But after three episodes of the show’s much-touted return to Bravo, it feels as if the male contestants have the edge over the female seamstresses. Consider this: The three eliminated players so far – Cavanagh Baker, Frankie Lewis and Nadine Ralliford — were all women. That is only partly mitigated by the fact that female designers were declared the winners on episodes 1 and 3, Tessa Clark and Hester Sunshine, while Sebastian Grey (above) won the futuristic challenge on episode 2.

Also consider, however, that six women have been ranked among the least favorite looks while three men have been in the bottom. The fate of contestants can shift from week to week depending on the challenge and whether it plays to their strengths. Hester struggled in Week 2 with...

‘Project Runway’ recap: Whose looks were ‘All the Rage,’ and who just enraged the judges? [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Nothing says drama like more than a dozen designers in a tight workroom. “Project Runway” season 17 has been full of conflict and controversy, and that’s just after two weeks. Were there any more fireworks in episode three, “All the Rage”? From that episode title, how could there not be? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

“All the Rage” tasked designers with creating complete head-to-toe looks with one pattern. Easy, right? All you need to find is one fabric when shopping at Mood. Then again, that increases the pressure to find just the right fabric. Choose poorly and your challenge could be over before it begins.

Sunset for Hester Sunshine? Our ‘Project Runway’ odds say she’s the next to go
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Hester Sunshine certainly stands out from the crowd after the first two episodes of “Project Runway,” but not always in a good way. Her exuberant attitude clashed with her teammates Garo Sparo and Nadine Ralliford last week in “The Future is Here,” and she has a tendency to pick fabrics she regrets. Despite the drama, she was safe in both previous challenges, but our readers suspect her time is up. Is the sun about to set on Sunshine?

According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Sunshine is the likeliest to be eliminated tonight in episode three. She gets leading odds of 39/20 as of this writing. But since the team challenge is behind her, if anything does her in it might be another fabric mishap. When shopping for fabrics at Mood in the season premiere she foolishly chose plastic organza that she had never even worked with before. And...

‘Project Runway’ fans are on Team Nadine: They say Hester was a fool for tulle in ‘The Future is Here’ [Poll Results]
Garo Sparo
Some people just don’t work well with others. Hester Sunshine has made a quick impression in the first two weeks of “Project Runway” season 17 with her exuberant personality, eccentric style and blue hair. But as she admitted last week in “The Future is Here,” teamwork isn’t her strong suit. She almost did her team in by forcing them to work around her obsession with tulle fabric. Her teammate Nadine Ralliford was fit to be tied, and the “Runway” fans we polled were decidedly on Team Nadine. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.

When Sunshine was assigned to work with Garo Sparo and Ralliford to create looks inspired by futuristic sci-fi body augmentations, even Garo Sparo was worried about the group dynamic given Sunshine’s high-strung personality, and his fear was well founded. Sunshine spent a large portion of their design budget on tulle. Then halfway through...

Garo Sparo and Renee rise in our ‘Project Runway’ odds despite team turmoil, but why not Tessa and Sebastian?
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
“Project Runway” enters its third week of competition following two episodes of tears, tension and team turmoil that had multiple designers at their wits’ end. But a couple of contestants who were at the center of the drama weathered the storm and have actually risen in our predictions for who will win the entire competition: Garo Sparo and Renee Hill.

Garo Sparo was assigned to a wholly incompatible team last week with the excitable Hester Sunshine and the no-nonsense Nadine Ralliford. It seemed like they were destined for the bottom of the judges’ scores, but they made it through safely. However, only one of them got a bump in our predictions. According to the combined forecasts of Gold Derby users, Garo Sparo is now the front-runner to win the season with leading odds of 12/5 as of this writing. He knocks Ralliford down to second place; perhaps our readers think his...

Judging from this ‘Project Runway’ preview clip, a demanding Nadine angles to be the next Cavanagh [Watch Video]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Has Nadine Ralliford inherited eliminated designer Cavanagh Baker‘s “rhymes with itch” mantle on Bravo’s “Project Runway” 17? The preview below of this week’s episode suggests that might be the case. For a challenge that requires an outfit that is head-to-toe print that involves Beyonce‘s stylist Marni Senofonte, Nadine has one of the curvier models to attire. Even my untrained eyes can see there are definite fit issues. The top is too loose and the pant legs are way too tight.

She ignores these facts and instead is critical about the person wearing it. “Looking at my model, the outfit is not totally what I wanted.” She says she can cinch the wrap-around top to be tighter. But then she confesses, “I love this outfit. I just don’t like it on my model.” Let’s just say the cut and the print does nothing for her model...

I pity the tulle: Was ‘Project Runway’s’ Nadine too hard on Hester for her fabric obsession? [Poll]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
“I am not a team player,” said Hester Sunshine in “The Future is Here,” the second episode of “Project Runway” season 17. That’s not an encouraging thing to say after you’ve been assigned to a team for your latest challenge. Indeed, Sunshine turned into Sunburn as she clashed with her teammates Garo Sparo and Nadine Ralliford. The biggest source of tension: Sunshine’s obsession with tulle. But was Ralliford too hard on her? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

The “Future” challenge was to design forward-thinking looks that would highlight body modification details on their models. Garo Sparo, Ralliford and Sunshine had to create their cohesive mini collection for a woman with shoulder horns — weird, I know. Unfortunately for her team, Sunshine’s idea of cohesion was to use tulle, tulle and more tulle. When they went over-budget buying their fabrics at Mood,...

‘Project Runway’ recap: ‘The Future is Here,’ but was it a fashion utopia or a tragic dystopia? [Updating Live Blog]
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
There was plenty of excitement in the season 17 premiere of “Project Runway” with the show’s return to Bravo, a new host and mentor, new judges and a new crop of 16 designers vying for a prize package worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. So did things settle down as the 15 remaining contestants settled into the workroom in episode two, “The Future is Here,” or did the drama intensify? Find out below in our minute-by-minute blog with all the developments as they happen.

The season premiere had a controversial ending when Cavanagh Baker was eliminated for a bland black look instead of Frankie Lewis, whose bodysuit made of blue straps was practically falling off her model. New host Karlie Kloss and new judges Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth made a bad “First Impression” on some fans by eliminating the more competently constructed look. ‘Project Runway’ season 17 premiere recap: What were our ‘First Impressions’ of the new designers, judges and host? [Updating Live Blog]
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
After more than a decade on Lifetime “Project Runway” returned to Bravo on Thursday night, March 14, for a 17th season that once again brings together 16 designers from around the world to compete for fashion supremacy. So who made the best first impressions in “First Impressions”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

“Runway” spent its first five seasons on Bravo before moving to Lifetime. But the fallout from the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein resulted in Lifetime dropping the series, which was produced by the Weinstein Company. Then Bravo picked it back up. But the network switch isn’t the only big change for the show this year.

‘Project Runway’ season 17 predictions: Who’s the early front-runner to win? Cavanagh, Garo Sparo, Nadine …?
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
Season 17 of “Project Runway” has its long-awaited premiere tonight on Bravo. In addition to a brand new host (model Karlie Kloss), a new mentor (Christian Siriano) and new judges (Elaine Welteroth and Brandon Maxwell), there’s a brand new crop of 16 designers competing for a prize package of hundreds of thousands of dollars. So who’s the early front-runner? We’ve been asking our readers to boldly stick their necks out with their early forecasts here in our predictions center.

They made it work! Find out exactly when ‘Project Runway’ returns to Bravo for long-awaited season 17
Projet Haute Couture (2004)
“Project Runway” fans have been in limbo since season 16 aired in the fall of 2017. The series was produced by the Weinstein Company and thus became a casualty of the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. After years on Lifetime (which is currently airing its final season of “Project Runway All Stars“), the show was picked back up by its original network Bravo, but without its hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. They’re making it work, however: season 17 of the long-running fashion competition premieres Thursday, March 14, at 8:00pm.

Stepping in for Klum as host is Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss. And taking over Gunn’s mentoring duties is a man who understands full well how it feels to be a contestant on the series: season four “Runway” champ Christian Siriano. But they’ve got big shoes to fill. Klum and Gunn were perennial nominees at the Emmys for their hosting duties,...
