Why does the well-qualified Kalki Koechlin always play such surly actors? She plays characters who will always find a way to make herself unhappy. She doesn’t disappoint, although it doesn’t help much that she looks nothing like Deepti Naval’s daughter in Goldfish, an oddly satisfying film about fractured lives looking for closure.

Since the film is set in London (though not shot with any touristic flourishes), the Indian characters don’t have to behave like they would if they were placed in the same situation back home. This is not to say that they are not shackled by their cultural heritage. But I am pretty sure the mother and daughter, played with powerful predilection by Naval and Koechlin, would never be allowed to behave the way they were in Ludhiana.

Sarvnik Kaur’s documentary Against The Tide has won the top prize, the Golden Gateway Award, at the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival.

The documentary, which world premiered at Sundance, follows two fishers and friends from Mumbai’s Koli community pursuing their livelihoods by different means.

Lockdown drama Bahadur - The Brave by Diwa Shah, which played in San Sebastian’s New Directors strand this year, won the Silver Gateway Award.

Kanu Behl’s drama Agra, which world premiered in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight this year, won the special jury award.

Sarvnik Kaur’s documentary “Against the Tide” has won the Golden Gateway Award at the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival. The film previously won awards at Sundance, Sydney and Seattle and best documentary at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards on the same evening as Mumbai.

Diwa Shah’s San Sebastian winner “Bahadur: The Brave” received Mumbai’s Silver Gateway Award. The festival’s Gender Sensitivity Award, for a film that challenges gender stereotypes and norms, which is decided by India’s Film Critics Guild, was won by Leesa Gazi’s “Barir Naam Shahana” (“A House Named Shahana”). At a recent event in Mumbai, Jim has shed light on his unique approach to acting. He said: “I don’t think it is easy. Like any other job, preparation is key, and without it you haven’t got anything. The better prepared you are, the more spontaneous you can be on set.”

Foreword

Web series on streaming platforms have warranted a far more emotional investment both for actors in the cast and from the viewers who would try and get involved in the characters. Their sequels, however, are rarely as engrossing as the original first season of episodic developments. And for the same reason, I, for one, am a tad sceptical about watching successive seasons with as much enthusiasm as I am for the preceding ones. Unless it is ‘Made In Heaven’.

Made in Heaven Season 2

This series is a compelling watch and though there isn’t anything spectacularly novel about its storyline, the production values, immaculate writing and superb acting by the entire cast makes it riveting. It represents what present-day India is all about. Conservative on the one hand and modern in many ways with progressive mindsets of traditional people who face conflicting ideas to deal with at every step.
