Exclusive: Russell Crowe, Jacob Tremblay, Shailene Woodley and Annabelle Wallis have signed on to star in Unabom, a new thriller on domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski to be directed for Netflix and MRC by Janus Metz (Andor).
Inspired by true events, Unabom originated as a spec from Sam Chalsen & Nelson Greaves, the writers behind Radio Silence’s forthcoming Art Bell project, who have developed the film alongside 2.0 Entertainment since its inception. The pic follows Kaczynski’s (Tremblay) transformation from Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber, who carried out a nationwide bombing campaign in the U.S. from 1978-95, killing three people and injuring 23.
Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Crowe), Kaczynski’s troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller (Woodley), brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation.

On April 14, Deadline broke the news that, after a bidding war, Netflix had secured a new thriller series adaptation based on the book Dead Letters by Caite Dolan-Leach. Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) is set to star and executive produce the drama with Alex Cooper's (Call Her Daddy ) Unwell Productions and Aaron Laplan's Kaptial Entertainment.
The project took off because Lucy Hale loved reading the book. After talking to her manager, Leeds, they looped in Kaplan to collaborate on the thriller series. It's no surprise that Hale is set to play identical twins, Ava and Zelda. Her love for the story could prove crucial to the success of this upcoming Netflix show. Book adaptations can be tricky, but having a fan of the book star in and produce it sounds like a win.
Fans have seen Hale pull off a multitude of different characters throughout her career. I haven't read the book,...

Filming a multi-camera sitcom with a live studio audience is probably pretty fun, and when it comes to Chuck Lorre's hit CBS series "The Big Bang Theory," the cast has been pretty clear over the years that one (very good) episode in season 7 was particularly delightful to film.
In Jessica Radloff's 2022 book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," main cast members Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar and Mayim Bialik — who played Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, and Amy Farrah Fowler — fondly look back on filming the season 7 episode "The Scavenger Vortex," where Raj sets up a scavenger hunt for his friends and goes all out. So how did the episode even come into being?

Mel Novak, the great movie villain known for his slick turns as the sniper Stick in Bruce Lee’s Game of Death, the gangster Blue Eyes in Jim Kelly’s Black Belt Jones and the informant Tony Montoya in Chuck Norris’ An Eye for an Eye, has died. He was 90.
Novak died Wednesday of natural causes at a hospice facility in Granada Hills, his daughter Nikol Conant told The Hollywood Reporter.
In a career that spanned seven decades, the charismatic Novak did lots of his own stunts, as in The Ultimate Warrior (1975), starring Yul Brynner and Max von Sydow. That was one of the four films he made with Enter the Dragon director Robert Clouse.
In his death scene for that post-apocalyptic adventure, “They covered me with peanut butter and sunflower seeds and then put 40 live rats on me,” Novak recalled in a 2018 interview. “I told their trainer, ‘If one of them bites me,...

The U.S. celebrates Easter on Apr. 20, and, one weekend ahead of the cultural holiday, Angel Studios is releasing a new Christian film. This time, it will tell Jesus Christ's story as an animated film.
The King of Kings is loosely inspired by the children's book The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens, published several decades after the author's death. The animated film has the voices of many A-list actors, including Oscar Isaac as the voice of Jesus, and follows Charles Dickens as he narrates the story of Jesus Christ. Ahead of its release in theaters on Apr. 11, The King of Kings debuted with a positive score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The King of Kings' 76% score comes from 21 reviews. The score might fluctuate as more reviews come in, but the film is up to an enthusiastic start. Considering the animated movie is not yet in theaters, it doesn't have...

Cousins David (Jessie Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) Kaplan are brought together after the death of their Grandmother, who left them money in her will to embark on the trip of a lifetime. Leaving the USA to join a group tour in Poland, the pair are not only confronted with their Jewish roots and history but with the entirely real facets of each other.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the astute and acerbic Jessie Eisenberg already has a few films under his belt from behind the camera, but astonishingly, A Real Pain marks his directorial debut. It’s a triple-hander for the mind behind the movie, simultaneously writing, directing, and starring the narrative surrounding two cousins who couldn’t be further apart.

In director Barry Levinson's The Alto Knights, Robert De Niro plays not one, but two mob bosses. You'd think that with double the screen time, the mafia drama would be a big hit with fans and critics who have been following De Niro's career since the days of Mean Streets, but unfortunately that isn't the case here. The Alto Knights has landed with an echoing thud on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling that the two-hour movie is probably worth skipping this weekend in theaters.
Holding a rotten rating of just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, noted Canadian critic Richard Crouse says, "The Alto Knights is a slick movie, with nice period details, but the shallow look at the relationships of the protagonists and a repetitive, drawn-out script blunts the power of the story." Odie Henderson from The Boston Globe adds:

Exclusive: Brooke Shields is ready to revisit the setting that made her a global star in the 1980 movie The Blue Lagoon, with SNL alum David Spade joining her for the ride. Fox is developing Almost Paradise, a multi-camera sitcom from comedy veteran Danny Zuker (Modern Family) and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.
Written by Zuker, Almost Paradise is described as The Blue Lagoon meets Gilligan’s Island. Its logline reads: Just your everyday, normal married couple facing all the everyday, normal challenges of being stranded on a desert Island for decades. Think Blue Lagoon, the family sitcom.
The idea originated from a general meeting between Shields and Kaplan. The two then approached Spade, on whose NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me! Shields had guest starred and Zuker had worked for two seasons as consulting producer/co-executive producer.

The Vampire Diaries was a massive hit for The CW Network throughout its eight-season run. After a break from the supernatural genre, Paul Wesley, who played Stefan Salvatore in the series, is gearing up for a comeback.

Updated, with Trump comment: With less than two weeks before Donald Trump takes office, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg announced a series of changes to its content moderation practices on Facebook and Instagram, including ending fact-checking and other restrictions.
“The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards, once again, prioritizing speech,” Zuckerberg said in a video posted this morning. “So we’re going back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms.”
The changes are just the latest effort by Meta given that Trump and his allies have targeted the platform and Zuckerberg himself. Following Trump’s reelection, Zuckerberg met with the president-elect. Last week, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, Nick Clegg, announced his departure, to be replaced by Joel Kaplan, a Republican who has been sympathetic to claims that the platform has suppressed conservative voices.

The horror comedy series Shining Vale premiered on Starz back in March of 2022, then the second season reached the airwaves in October of 2023. Unfortunately, it was cancelled soon after, as it “did not find a large enough audience to continue.” But Starz went further than just cancelling this show, they also it from their archives, removing from the Starz streaming service at the end of 2023. A year later, Shining Vale has now resurfaced and is available to watch on the Max streaming service!
Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the first season of Shining Vale followed a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Patricia “Pat” Phelps, who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same. Pat is a...

Nick Clegg, who has led global affairs at Meta since 2018, is stepping down, to be succeeded by his deputy, Joel Kaplan.
The changes in Meta’s public policy and lobbying team come as corporations in general are prepping their shops for the incoming Donald Trump administration and Republican majority.
Kaplan, VP of global public policy, was deputy chief of staff for policy under President George W. Bush, and previously served as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. He joined Facebook in 2011. In 2020, The Washington Post reported that Kaplan argued against some content moderation measures, arguing that they would disproportionately harm conservative voices.
Clegg, the former deputy prime minister of the UK and leader of the Liberal Democrats, wrote on Facebook, “As a new year begins, I have come to the view that this is the right time for me to move on from my role as President,...

The Animation Guild has ratified its contract with the major studios, despite concerns from some about protections against artificial intelligence.
The guild announced that 76.1% of the members voted in favor of the deal.
“This agreement is the next step forward in our goal to create the strongest contract for our members,” said Steve Kaplan, the business representative of the union, in a statement.
The three-year contract includes raises of 7%, 4%, and 3.5% across the board, as well as higher gains for specific crafts. Among them is a provision requiring “pay equity” for color designers, which has been traditionally female dominated, and a staffing minimum for TV animation writers.
The deal did not include most of the negotiators’ more ambitious demands, such as a provision allowing members to opt out of using AI in their jobs, and to opt out of having their work used to train AI systems. The Alliance of Motion...

In July of 2023, New York Judge Lewis Kaplan issued a clarification in the civil cases brought by author E. Jean Carroll against President-elect Donald Trump. A New York jury had ruled in May of that year that Trump was liable for sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll. According to New York criminal law, “rape” is narrowly defined as non-consenual vaginal penetration by a penis, and all other forceful acts of sexual assault are referred to as “sexual abuse.”

This is our final round-up before the end of 2024, and it’s a good one. There are plenty of gift ideas lurking here––some choices to enjoy during time off, too. Note also that The Film Stage Holiday Gift Guide includes a list of my favorite cinema books from the last 12 months. One of those picks kicks off this column, and it is written by none other than the great Al Pacino.
Sonny Boy by Al Pacino (Penguin Press)
Al Pacino’s memoir, Sonny Boy, is easily one of the most eagerly awaited books of 2024. And for me, this look at the actor’s life and career more than lives up to the hype. Many highlights have already earned some social-media chatter––most notably young Al’s penis trauma (!), a near-death experience after a recent bout with Covid, and the reasons behind his decision to do Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill.

Agatha All Along is responsible for introducing some particularly powerful new MCU characters, including one exciting replacement for the Scarlet Witch. Wanda Maximoff ostensibly died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though doubt has been cast on the permanence of her death on multiple occasions. This was reignited in Agatha All Along episode 7 when Agatha responded with "Yes. No. Maybe?" when asked by Billy Maximoff/Kaplan if Wanda Maximoff is really dead.
Still, while her departure may have removed a significant player among the McU's most powerful characters, Agatha All Along has started to fill the void she left behind. For one thing, Lilia Calderu's precognitive powers are not to be sniffed at, though she is also ostensibly dead following the end of Agatha All Along episode 7. In the first episode of the fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Dos Cerritos," D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) is still living among her fellow Orion pirates, commanding her own vessel and regularly going on plundering excursions. Although Tendi is a capable fighter, she is mild-mannered at heart, trying to rein in the ultra-violent, murder-forward ethos of her crew. Not-so-secretly, Tendi longs to return to the U.S.S. Cerritos, where she can happily be a junior office; medical science, her friends, and gentle service interest her more than looting and violence. Luckily, Tendi's sister D'Erica has offered a deal; salvage a crashed 300-year-old Orion vessel from a distant planet, and Tendi will be allowed to leave Orion again to pursue her Starfleet dreams.
A snag: when Tendi arrives at the location of the downed Orion vessel, there are others eager to salvage it for themselves. Tendi...

Following Wednesday's episode of Agatha All Along, we now know the truth about how Billy Maximoff survived the events of WandaVision.
The 10-year-old's soul inhabited the body of 13-year-old Willam Kaplan, but was left with no real memories of either life...beyond having a brother named Tommy. Lilia Calderu put the sigil on William before he came Billy and showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained how all that works in an interview with The Wrap.
"Yeah, it works on the witch who cast it, so once Lilia casts it, she can’t remember him," the writer and director tells the trade. "But the reason that Billy doesn’t remember Lilia is because he was William Kaplan at that time. And then the reason that he doesn’t remember Alice is because he was unconscious."
Schaeffer also shared details on a deleted scene involving Alice Wu-Gulliver and the car crash that killed William...

Agatha All Along is the newest addition to the MCU, exploring the magical and supernatural aspects of the cinematic universe that were only lightly addressed in earlier projects.
The series introduces a host of new characters and mysteries, including Alice Wu, a protective witch.
Alice’s backstory is quite tragic. Her mother, a witch, struggled with an ancient curse that threatened both her life and Alice’s. This curse impacted Alice throughout her life.
Lorna died in a hotel fire linked to the curse, and many mistakenly believed she was killed on “The Witches Road.” Although Alice never fully embraced the idea of magic, she sensed that something unusual was happening, especially as she struggled to maintain stable employment.
In the second episode of Agatha All Along, Alice loses her job as a mall security guard when Agatha tries to recruit her into her coven; prior to that, she had...

‘Agatha All Along’ is the latest addition to the MCU. The show focuses on a magical and supernatural side of the cinematic universe, something which was barely touched upon in previous projects.
The show also introduced plenty of characters and mysteries, and one of the new additions is the protection witch – Alice Wu.
Alice’s backstory is kind of tragic. Her mother was a witch suffering from an old curse that threatened to derail both her life and the life of her daughter. Throughout her life, Alice was affected by the said curse.
Lorna was killed in a hotel fire, from the effects of the curse, everyone mistakenly believed that she was killed on “The Witches Road.” Alice never exactly believed in magic, but she was aware that something had to be going on since she was seemingly unable to hold down a job.

This week’s episode of Agatha All Along finally shed light on Billy’s motives and why he sought out Agatha in the first place. It turns out Billy had some awareness of his true origins all along and was cleverly manipulating Agatha, though she would never admit it.
Billy wasn’t after power. After his conversation with Ralph Bohner, he realized his twin brother was still out there, and his best chance of finding him was through Agatha—one of the last people to see his family alive.
Billy reveals that he can sense Tommy somewhere along the Witches’ Road, but he’s unable to pinpoint his location. There’s strong speculation that both Billy (Wiccan) and Tommy (Speed) will have significant roles in the MCU’s future, particularly with the Young Avengers storyline. But what are the chances of seeing Tommy in Agatha All Along?

This week’s episode of ‘Agatha All Along’ finally cleared up what Billy was up to and why he searched for Agatha in the first place. As it turns out Billy was kind of aware of his origin all along, and he was actually quite masterfully playing Agatha, although she would never admit it.

The following contains spoilers from Agatha All Along Episode 6, "Familiar by Thy Side," now streaming on Disney+.
After ending on a dramatic cliffhanger in last week's episode, Agatha All Along went back in time to reveal the origins of William Kaplan A.K.A. Billy Maximoff A.K.A. Teen. Just as Monica Rambeau's backstory arrived in the middle of WandaVision, Billy's survival of the Hex is (kind of) explained. The miniseries' sixth episode revisits a character from the previous series and shows audiences the other side of Agatha's, er Detective Agnes O'Connor's, scenes from the premiere. One could call "Familiar by Thy Side" a "filler" episode, but only because it fills in the blanks and narrative gaps.
While the sixth episode ends the second act of the nine-episode Agatha All Along, it may not be entirely satisfying to fans. The previous episode, "Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power," ended with Teen revealing his magic,...

Just like the red-colored lunch box that is used as a pivotal story-telling tool in Sunflower Girl, the story itself is packed full, except with a bunch of different themes and emotions. That’s particularly remarkable given Sunflower Girl just happens to be a short that clocks in at a mere thirteen minutes. However, that proves to be enough for director Holly M. Kaplan to convey what she was set out to.
The story here is rather simple. Rosie, a Chinese-American teenager, is asked by her mother to pick up her kid sister Amy from school. Her mother hands over to her the red tiffin box, packed with snacks for Amy. Rosie sets out to run the errand for her mother on her skateboard. High school sitcoms have always been a mixed bag, largely because the issues kids are dealing with at that age beg for a more nuanced take than the half-hour format can provide. Godawful shows like "Saved by the Bell," "Head of the Class" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" are the low standard a high school sitcom has to clear nowadays, so we need to count our blessings when something as wonderful as Mike O'Brien's "A.P. Bio" and the currently airing Brian Jordan Alvarez's "English Teacher" arrives.
Before those two sitcoms, the bar was set reasonably high by Gabe Kaplan's "Welcome Back, Kotter." Based in part on Kaplan's sitcom act, the comedian stars as Gabe Kotter, a former underachiever who returns to his old Bensonhurst Brooklyn neighborhood to teach at the high school that used to seem like a prison to him. He's now in charge of a new batch of knuckleheads,...
