Brown made his move to coaching football after his eight season run as a player in the NFL. He made his coaching debut with the as the offensive coordinator for the Williamsport Are High School team and then spent six years coaching at the collegiate level for Lycoming College, Susquehanna University, and Rutgers University. In 2009 Gary joined the Cleveland Browns as the running backs coach, where he guided record setting backfield units. In his first season in Cleveland, Brown coached leading rusher Jerome Harris he led the club with 862 rushing yards, more than double what he had amassed in his prior three seasons combined. During Brown's 2010 season in Cleveland he oversaw the backfield led by Peyton Hillis who joined the Browns Hall of Fame as one of the only Cleveland players to record 11 or more rushing touchdowns in a single season. Gary Brown's success in Cleveland caught the eye of the Dallas Cowboys who brought him into the organization in 2013. Since arriving in Dallas, Brown has led the Cowboys to finish in the top 10 in rushing yards while also averaging at least 4.5 yards per carry each season. Brown has coached skilled running backs with the Cowboys such as DeMarco Murray, Darren McFadden, and Ezekiel Elliot, all of whom have topped 1,000 rushing yards during a season. Brown's skillful guidance of the Dallas running game that now includes powerhouse Ezekiel Elliot serving as the teams lead back, has solidified the Dallas offensive as a formidable opponent for years to come.
