Netflix Sets Australian Series Adaptation of ‘My Brilliant Career’
Image
Netflix has commenced production on a series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s seminal Australian novel “My Brilliant Career,” with filming underway at Adelaide Studios and various South Australian locations.

The streaming giant is partnering with Jungle Entertainment on the period drama, which marks a fresh take on Franklin’s 1901 coming-of-age tale that captured the aspirations of young Australian women seeking independence and self-determination.

Set in rural Australia at the turn of the 20th century, the series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a spirited and ambitious young woman who dreams of literary fame and refuses to conform to the limited expectations placed upon women of her era. Born into a struggling farming family, Sybylla must navigate the constraints of her social circumstances while pursuing her artistic ambitions and grappling with questions of love, duty, and personal fulfillment. Her journey becomes a bold assertion of female independence in a society that offers few options beyond marriage and motherhood.

The Moogai Review — Thought-Provoking, Evocative, Yet Predictable
Image
As a self-proclaimed supporter and fan of Australian cinema, The Moogai falls just short for me. From the emotional wrecking ball of a film, Babyteeth, to the powerful crime drama Lantana, to the haunting Picnic at Hanging Rock, the Aussies know how to stir a wide range of emotions that linger long after the credits roll.

With The Moogai, the film explores haunting Australian history through the horror-thriller lens of colonialism, a force that has profoundly shaped the country’s past. The voices and stories emerging from this region of cinema are genuinely unique on the world stage.

Director of photography Sean Ryan excels at building tension and delivering horror thrills by stitching together a wide range of subjective camera techniques — from extreme close-ups to an effective wide-angle tracking shot over a desolate, eerie landscape — leaving the viewer unsettled and uncertain about where the story is heading.

The Moogai’s...

Miranda Tapsell & Gwilym Lee On ‘Top End Bub’, The Follow-Up To Rom-Com Hit ‘Top End Wedding’ And “What Happens After Happily Ever After?”
Image
Top End Wedding was a rom-com road trip that ended with the nuptials of Lauren and Ned. The series follow-up to the hit Australian movie picks up the couple’s story as they unexpectedly become parents.

“I thought there was more to Lauren and Ned, we only saw them within the very few stressful days leading up to their wedding,” says Miranda Tapsell who plays Lauren and co-wrote the movie and series with Joshua Tyler. “Josh and I always entertained the idea of what happens after happily ever after?”

It turns out what happens is parenthood. The couple assume parental duties for Taya (Gladys-May Kelly), aka the Bub of the title. Her mother, Lauren’s cousin, has died unexpectedly.

Lauren, a dynamic Indigenous lawyer ticking off life goals and Ned, her British husband, move back to the Top End (where the outback meets the tropics) to raise Bub. As they...

The Moogai review – Stolen Generations trauma feeds a haunting horror film
The Moogai (2024)
Jon Bell’s bold and daring film about a mother who is stalked by a child-stealing bogeyman is a little underdeveloped

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

Horror movies directed by Indigenous Australians are a largely rare category of cinema, immediately making Jon Bell’s Stolen Generations-themed spook-fest The Moogai a work of cultural significance. Even if the film – while unquestionably bold and daring – feels a little underdeveloped. Bell, The Moogai’s writer and director, expanding a short film of the same name from 2020, deploys creepy images that feel broadly familiar; it is steeped in familiar codes and conventions, while belonging to a very different political and ideological context to the standard genre fare.

Bell’s narrative centers around a heavily-pregnant Aboriginal lawyer Sarah (Shari Sebbens), who’s married to a carpenter, Fergus (Meyne Wyatt), with whom she has a six-year-old daughter, Chloe (Jahdeana Mary). Sarah has an uneasy relationship with her biological mother,...

The Office Australia Smashes Prime Video Records, Despite Negative Reviews
Image
The new Australian reboot of The Office has become a smash hit for Prime Video, despite some intense backlash from the sitcom's die-hard fan base. Starring Felicity Ward, the new series takes place at the Aussie packaging company, Finley Craddick, who are trying to bounce back after the Covid pandemic forced everyone to work from home. The new show stars a female lead (which fans are way more upset about than they have any right to be), and Australian counterparts for all your favorite Dunder Mifflin employees.

According to statistics released by Amazon, The Office Au has shattered international viewing figures for Prime Video. The reboot shot to the number one spot in its resident country of Australia, and has held the coveted position since its release on October 18, 2024. The show also reached the Top 10 in over 100 countries, including New Zealand and Singapore. While the new reboot has been a...

The Office (Australia)
Image
Streaming on: Prime Video

Episodes viewed: 8 of 8

Well, here we go again. The Office — the still-influential mockumentary sitcom created in 2001 by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant — returns in yet another regional guise. Like any good expanding business looking for mass market penetration, this series has had international branches in almost every time zone: there’s been Le Bureau in France, Konttori in Finland, Os Aspones in Brazil. But The Office, Australian edition, is significant for being only the third English-language take, after the original British vintage and the all-conquering American version, which ran for nine seasons and remains one of the most streamed shows of all time.

All of which begs the question: why would we need another one? Surely by now, most people in Australia will have already seen this workplace comedy in either its British or American iteration? Not to mention the fact that, post-pandemic, the physical bricks-and-mortar...

Image

The eight-part series is created, executive produced and written by Miranda Tapsell and Joshua Tyler and produced by Goalpost Pictures, and follows on from the events of Top End Wedding. Tapsell also plays Indigenous lawyer Lauren, one of the stars of the franchise.

When we last saw Lauren in Top End Wedding, she had married her British boyfriend Ned (Gwilym Lee) in her hometown of Darwin, despite some hiccups and familial drama along the way. Top End Bub sees Lauren and Ned head back up north when they discover that Lauren’s eight-year-old niece Bub has been orphaned. The couple decide to leave behind their life of comfort down south to look out for Bub,...

The Office Remake Sees Stark Divide Between Audiences & Critics
Image
The Australian remake of The Office has bombed on review site Rotten Tomatoes mere days after the full first season was released on streaming. Based on the hit British mockumentary sitcom of the same name, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office 2024 is the second international iteration of the show, following the hugely successful NBC adaptation starring Steve Carrell as Michael Scott, which aired from 2005 to 2012. The new reboot of The Office stars an ensemble cast, including Felicity Ward, Shari Sebbens, and Steen Raskopoulos, and debuted on Prime Video on October 18.

Unlike its predecessors, the show has not been particularly well received, and according to review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the show has received poor audience reviews, but, interestingly, has received positive reviews from critics. At the time of writing, the show has posted an audience score of 32% from more than 50 reviews, showing that the show has...

The Office Remake's Female Lead Offers Surprising Response to Toxic Backlash
Image
The latest remake of beloved sitcom The Office features its first female lead, with Felicity Ward starring as the new boss, Hannah Howard. The idea of another remake, and a female-led one at that, has led to certain section of society (otherwise known as sexists) flat-out rejecting the series, as well as resulting in a lot of backlash online. As is sadly the way these days. Now, in an interview with THR, Ward has responded directly to the negative reaction directed at both the show and her in the lead role, saying, Ive been a stand-up comedian for 16 years. Ive had this sh*t before, like that just exists.

I mean, its like everyones asking me Do you feel the pressure? And Ive heard that 40 times in the last week. Are you feeling pressure, Felicity? Are you getting the pressure? What do you think of the pressure? Hows the pressure getting to you?...

How The Office Remake Compares To British & American Versions Explained By Star
Image
The Office remake star Felicity Ward explains how her version of the series is different from the American and British versions. Ward plays Hannah Howard in the Australian version of The Office, which released on Prime Video in Australia and multiple other nations today. In addition to Ward, Australia's The Office features a leading cast including Edith Poor, Steen Raskopoulos, Shari Sebbens, Jonny Brugh, Josh Thomson, Raj Labade, and Susan Lin Young. It does not yet have a release date for the Prime Video launch in the United States.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ward speaks on how the Australian version of The Office compares with the previous version. According to the actor, "Hannah is more similar to Michael Scott" than David Brent if one compares the Australian show with both the UK and US versions. She also mentions that "the show itself has more space," comparing it to the...

The Office Remake Star Addresses Gender Swap Backlash: "Of Course They're Gonna Come For Me"
Image
The Office remake star Felicity Ward comments on the backlash towards her gender-swapped manager character, Hannah Howard. Based on the hit BBC show created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the American version of The Office aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013, with Steve Carell's Michael Scott serving as the centerpiece of the show. Now, in addition to a reboot of The Office, an Australian remake of the show has now arrived on Prime Video, following Howard as she manages a struggling branch of Flinley Craddick.

In a recent interview with THR, Ward addresses the backlash to the Australian remake of The Office, and her character, in particular. Ward ultimately isn't fazed by the vitriol, revealing that, as a female stand up comedian, she's been dealing with situations like this for years. She also, however, reveals that she understands why some feel the need to lash out, sympathizing with what...

‘The Office’ Australia Star on Being Franchise’s First Female Boss and Online Backlash: “Of Course They’re Going to Come for Me”
Image
“New Office. New Aussie boss.”

That’s the tagline for the new Australian version of The Office, that launches Oct. 18 on Amazon Prime Video everywhere, except the U.S. The latest iteration — the thirteenth different country version of the BBC workplace sitcom created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant that incredibly first hit screens in 2001 — has garnered a lot of chatter on social media, YouTube and in the global press, not least because it is another accessible English-language adaptation that follows the beloved British and U.S. versions, but also because it is the first adaptation that features a female boss.

The set-up to the Aussie Office follows the tried and tested franchise formula: the mockumentary style, the boredom, the assortment of odd ball characters, the will-they-won’t-they office romance, and of course the overconfident, delusional boss lacking in self awareness. Australian standup comedian and actress Felicity Ward heads the cast of the Aussie Office,...

The Office Australia Remake Reviews Are Decidedly Mixed
Image
No! God! No! God! Please! No! Yes, The Office has been remade once again, this time in Australia. Prime Video is at the helm of the latest take, transporting audiences to a new office with a new boss in Felicity Wards Hannah Howard, who gets word that her branch will be shut down to work remotely. The idea of another remake of the hit sitcom was not met well by fans, and the reviews are now in, so how does The Office Australia fare against both the award-winning British original and its beloved U.S. counterpart?

We begin with a scathing review from Luke Buckmaster of The Guardian, who gives the remake just 1/5 and calls the series an edgeless reboot doomed for the shredder.

The Office Australia is so lacking in distinctive flavour, and so adherent to such a generic format, that it feels like it belongs to nowhere. Perhaps even nowhen,...

The Office | Trailer released for Australian version on Prime Video
Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s The Office has been remade once again, this time in Australia. Here’s the trailer.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s original version of The Office launched on the BBC in 2001. It introduced the world to boss from hell David Brent (Gervais) as he attempted to look good in front of the cameras documenting his workplace, paper merchants Wernham Hogg, alongside staff including Tim (Martin Freeman) Gareth (Mackenzie Crook) and Dawn (Lucy Davis).

All while trying to stay onside with bullying best mate Chris Finch (Ralph Ineson) and, in the second series, his new boss from the Swindon branch, Neil (Patrick Baladi).

Gervais and Merchant took cringe comedy to the extreme, with Brent becoming a byword for social awkwardness and inappropriate behaviour.

Since then, there have been 13 international versions, with Greg Daniels’ American version starring Steve Carrell being far and away the most successful,...

'Who Approved This?' The Office Fans React to Australian Reboot Trailer

The days of Michael Scott serving as the boss of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company's Scranton branch are long over, but The Office continues to expand its franchise with more spinoffs. The next one will imagine office life in Australia, and a sneak peek has been reavealed by way of a new trailer.

Shared by Prime Video ahead of the show's Oct. 18 premiere, the trailer introduces Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard, marking the first time a female actor has led an Office series. Hannah works as the managing director of a packaging company that's not so different from Dunder Mifflin, as she's even joined by several characters who may feel reminiscent of those from the well-known UK and United States versions of The Office. The Office Female-Led Remake Gets First Trailer From Prime Video
Image
Prime Video has released the first trailer for the female-led, Australian version of The Office. Starring Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard (the Australian equivalent of Michael Scott), the series puts a more modern spin on the now well-worn workplace mockumentary sitcom. Set in the present day, the series follows the employees of Finley Craddick as they're forced back into the office full-time, following the Covid pandemic.

The new trailer gives audiences the best look yet at the show's zany cast of characters. No office manager would be complete without their own Dwight Schrute, and Hannah's comes in the form of productivity manager Lizzie (Edith Poor). Finley Craddick even has its own Jim and Pam stand-ins in Nick (Steen Raskopoulos) and Greta (Shari Sebbens). The trailer features much of the same cringy, awkward humor that defined both the U.K. and U.S. versions of the show. Check out the trailer below:

Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and B.J. Novak in The Office (2005)
Prime Video has launched the trailer for the Australian version comedy series ‘The Office.’

On October 18, Amazon Prime Video will launch a new version of “The Office” set in Australia. The popular mockumentary series was created in the UK by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and adapted for US audiences. This latest iteration will be available worldwide on Amazon’s streaming service.

Image
The Office is back! Well, a version of it.

Amazon Prime Video has released the first trailer to the Australian adaptation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s enduring classic comedy series The Office, and we finally get a proper glimpse at the Aussie variants of Brent, Tim, Dawn, Gareth and more.

With NBC’s follow-up to the U.S. adaptation of The Office still in development, global fans of the franchise can sate themselves in the meantime with an Aussie attempt at the mockumentary-style comedy.

Just one (big) catch, though: The Office Australia will be available on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide from Oct. 18, except, that is, in the U.S. That’s nothing a Vpn can’t fix, however, if you’re really keen.

In the clip released Wednesday, we see Hannah Howard (Felicity Ward), the managing director of Sydney-based packaging company Flinley Craddick, trying and...

Amazon MGM Studios’ Sarah Christie Updates On ‘The Office Australia,’ ‘Deadloch’ & Jacob Elordi In ‘The Narrow Road To The Deep North’
Image
Exclusive: Many people decided the office was no longer for them after the Covid-19 pandemic, but not so Felicity Ward, or her new alter-ego, Hannah Howard. Comedian and actress Ward is starring in The Office Australia, one of the most hotly anticipated series outside of the U.S., marking the first time a woman has played the iconic (mis)manager role that Ricky Gervais first made famous on the BBC.

Sarah Christie, Senior Development Executive at Amazon MGM Studios in Australia, which is working on The Office for the Prime Video streaming service, is aware of the weight of expectation and the need to try something new. “It is huge, iconic IP,” she told Deadline. With NBC’s Michael Scott joining Gervais’ David Brent in the annals of TV comedy history, and other incarnations in countries as wide apart as Germany and Chile, the challenge is sizeable.

Filming Underway On New Alan Partridge BBC Series

Filming is underway on new Alan Partridge mockumentary And Did Those Feet. Deadline revealed the BBC series several months back and cameras have rolled on the latest Steve Coogan conception. The mockumentary follows the beloved comedy creation settling into life back in his Norfolk home after a year working in Saudi Arabia, but the adjustment has left him with a deep sense of unease. Over six episodes he will unpack what is missing in his life, explore why the nation is in such a funk and find out what it might take to keep a person funk-free. “This look into the state of the nation (and Alan’s own psyche) through a unique lens – that of Alan Partridge – promises to further bolster the already iconic repertoire of the most legendary comedy character in the UK,” said BBC comedy boss Jon Petrie. SXSW 2024 Review: The Moogai, An Examination Of Indigenous Trauma Let Down By Flaccid Script
Image
An Aboriginal demon steps in for the real-life enduring trauma of Australia’s “Stolen Generations” in Jon Bell’s debut feature, The Moogai. Government sponsored assimilation programs ripped tens of thousands of Aboriginal children from their families to be placed with white families in Australia in the first half of the 20th century, leading to widespread decimation of cultural identities among the indigenous population. The Moogai substitutes a child-stealing demon for the government in what could have been a powerful examination of the tragedy and its lingering effects on Aboriginal people, but instead falls flat as it forgoes tension while ultimately spending too much effort saying the quiet part loud. Sarah Bishop (Shari Sebbens) is a successful woman, an attorney on the brink of superstardom with her...

‘The Moogai’ Review: A Limp Australian Horror Film Made of Colonial Metaphors
Image
Stories of Australia’s “Stolen Generations” — Aboriginal children forcibly removed from their families by a white government — fuel the central metaphor in “The Moogai,” Jon Bell’s Sundance horror movie based on his 2020 short film. Unfortunately, this well-meaning metaphorical approach defines the strict boundaries of Bell’s feature debut, a brief but languid thriller rife with reminders of meaning that fail to coalesce into something thrilling or moving.

A riveting prologue, set decades in the past, orients the viewer within Australia’s torrid history, as white men in suits attempt to chase down and kidnap Black children on an Aboriginal reserve. Two of these kids, a pair of young sisters, evade this fate of ethnic cleansing and forced assimilation, though one of them ends up taken by a supernatural force hiding in the shadows: the Moogai, a folkloric boogeyman who snatches children with its sickly, talon-like fingers.

The main story,...

The Moogai (2024)
Sundance Review: The Moogai Offers a New Spin on an Old, Old Ghost Story
The Moogai (2024)
It seems these days the devil’s designs have strayed from virginal teen girls to kindergarteners. Whether stuffing them in animatronic suits or isolating them in apocalyptic cabins, the worst thing an au courant horror villain can do is harm children. The second-worst sin is to disbelieve a mother. The Moogai, Jon Bell’s feature debut based on his short film of the same name, wears these trends like a badge of honor. But while The Moogai comes by its earnest messaging honestly––the real horrors stem from Australian colonialism––it just feels like a different take on old tropes.

At the center of the action is Sarah (Shari Sebbens), a new mom in the middle of her own Rosemary’s Baby-like conspiracy. Newly pregnant Sarah is trying to cold-shoulder her biological mom, Ruth (Tessa Rose), and the Aboriginal culture she’s eager to share, but her daughter, Chloe (Jahdeana Mary), and husband,...

‘The Moogai’ Sundance Review – The Monster is a Metaphor (Again)
Image
Over the course of six decades (1910-1970), tens of thousands of Australian Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their homes due to the assimilation policies that were in place at the time. These policies claimed that the lives of First Nations people would be improved if they became part of white society, and an effort to breed out color from the Aboriginal population was carried out. Unsurprisingly, the lives of the removed children were not improved, with studies showing that many of them developed adverse reactions to their removal like mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, among others. These children became known as The Stolen Generation, and their experiences left a black mark in Australia’s history.

Writer/director Jon Bell, adapting his award-winning 2021 short film of the same name, taps into this unsavory event with The Moogai, yet another monster-as-a-metaphor horror drama that mostly succeeds when it acts as a drama,...
