Mike Flanagan Loves This Brutal Horror Film—Now You Can Watch It for Free!
Image
Our distribution label Dread helped launch Art the Clown as a pop culture icon with the release of Terrifier. The success of the first feature paved the way for a franchise that’s showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the series’ third installment grossed roughly $90 million at the global box office, even claiming the top spot during its opening weekend. With a strong showing like that, it’s no surprise that the films have some high-profile fans. Among said fans is Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan.

Flanagan keeps a record of his favorite horror films on Letterboxd, and I’m pleased to report that Terrifier claims a coveted spot on that list. Flanagan came to prominence as an indie filmmaker and has often been supportive of other scrappy creators like Terrifier’s Damien Leone. As for what Flanagan digs about Terrifier, perhaps he’s taken with the visceral sendoffs,...

The Buildout Review: Meditative Mystery in the Mojave
Image
In The Buildout, Zeshaan Younus’s feature debut, a lean 64-minute indie unfolds as a hybrid of narrative drama and fragmentary found-footage realism. The format alternates between meticulously framed widescreen vistas and jittery camcorder segments (a style I might dub “docu-lyricism”), courtesy of GoPro helmet cams and a handheld consumer camera.

Against the Southern California desert’s bleached expanse, Cameron (Jenna Kanell) and Dylan (Hannah Alline) undertake one last desert trek toward a fledgling religious community. Both bear the aftermath of a shared loss—guilt-laden and aching for absolution.

Younus orchestrates a contemplative pulse, where long silences stretch like dunes, then snap into sudden, unsettling suggestion. The film’s rhythm recalls post-war pilgrim narratives—those seeking a new Eden amid dust and doubt. It even seems to echo Steinbeck’s dust-blown migrations: survivors gravitating toward the promise of renewal.

In this milieu, themes of rebirth and rupture entwine. Friendship is...

Catherine Corcoran Reflects on 'Terrifier's Sickening Hacksaw Death
Image
Art the Clown has become one of the most unexpected and shocking horror icons of modern cinema in the Terrifierfranchise. However, he was around long before he became the record-breaking masochistic killer audiences have come to love in his three movies, but a gut-wrenching moment involving actress Catherine Corcoran and a hacksaw turned him into one of the most unpredictable villains to have graced screens in years. Now, almost a decade after being murdered in the most brutal and graphic way possible, the actress has reflected on her part in making the unrated killer a worldwide phenomenon.

Corcoran is hosting the first episode of Shout! TV’s Double Take on March 21, which features two movies in honor of Women’s History Month, and ahead of that she spoke to ComingSoon about working on Damien Leonie’s Terrifer and how it became something so much more than it was ever meant to be.

‘Terrifier’ Slashes onto Glow-in-the-Dark Red VHS with New Artwork & Packaging
Image
Presented by Broke Horror Fan (that’s me!), Terrifier is now available on VHS from Witter Entertainment.

Written and directed by Damien Leone, the 2016 slasher stars David Howard Thornton, Jenna Kanell, Catherine Corcoran, and Samantha Scaffidi.

It returns to VHS with two new variants: a standard slipcase with new art by Neil Fraser for $30, and a book box edition featuring a gatefold cover and a glow-in-the-dark red tape, limited to 250, for $50.

A very small quantity of leftover variants from earlier pressings are also available while supplies last.

Expected to ship in June, each tape includes an exclusive introduction by Thornton plus an Art the Clown Makeup Time Lapse featurette after the film.

For optimal VHS viewing, the film has been cropped from its original aspect ratio to 4:3 full frame. It is officially licensed from Dread and Epic Pictures and approved by Leone.

'Terrifier' Fans Should Be Excited for the Divisive Slasher 'Screamboat'
Image
As David Howard Thornton continues to gain notoriety for his role as Art the Clown in the popular Terrifier movies, his fans and slasher movie fanatics should book a ticket for Screamboat, a new killer cruise-ride horror movie opening in the U.S. in April 2025. Thornton portrays a murderous version of Mickey Mouse in the subversive slasher movie, building on a new disturbing Disney horror trend after last year's The Mouse Trap.

With obvious nods to Jason Takes Manhattan, a classic slasher on a cruise ship stopping in New York, Screamboat turns a touristy ferry ride into a fiendish and ferocious course through hyperviolent hell. Yet, with Thornton leading the way, Screamboat is the perfect alternative and/or placeholder to keep fans busy until Art the Clown returns for a fourth Terrifier film. All aboard!

'Screamboat's Premise, Explained

Steven Lamorte directed Screamboat from a screenplay he co-wrote with Matthew Garcia-Dunne.

Horror Highlights: Zombie Date Night 2, The Buildout, Joe Bob Goes To The Drive-in
Image
Zombie Date Night 2:

Roses are red…

Blood is too.

And the undead are even hungrier

In Zombie Date Night 2!

Ready For The Second Date?

"From the clearly rotted mind of Steve Urena comes the sequel to the critically acclaimed zombie romance comedy, Zombie Date Night!

Still recovering from the awkwardness of their first Zombie Date Night, main characters Jack and Ginger have reached the scariest place to be…the friend zone.

When their survival group realizes they’re running out of food, the enthusiastic and outgoing Ginger leads the charge with a very reluctant Jack to find sustenance before the zombaes (zombies who can only survive with a mate) eat them first. Will the second date be better than the first or will this situationship be food for the undead?

Returning for the sequel is the original team behind the first Zombie Date Night. Incredible art drawn by Sergi Domènech.

Dwayne Johnson Reacts to Not Having a Private and Normal Life Due To WWE and Movie Fame
Image
Dwayne Johnson is not a star that anyone would miss walking down the street, and that is not just because of his wide-as-a-house, tall-as-a-mountain frame. The man, the myth, the legend that is “The Rock” has not only been a fixture of the wrestling ring for decades, but has also been a huge presence on cinema screens for over 25 years. But when asked if he gets tired of the fame…it seems The Rock is still very invested in letting everyone smell what is simmering in his pot.

Johnson is as busy as he has ever been, with a mix of movies and WWE appearances planned for this year, the larger-than-life star is not about to take a back seat. This means that there is little chance of him ever being able to lead a quiet life away from the public eye, but according to the man himself, that is perfectly fine.

'So Many Times I Laughed': Dwayne Johnson Explains How Chris Evans Made Filming Red One Difficult
Image
Red One brings out several big names to spread some Christmas cheer to audiences during the holiday season with a relatively unique premise. Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Evans is one of those names, with co-star Dwayne Johnson praising the sense of humor he brought to the film.

Speaking with People during Red One's recent world premiere in Berlin, Johnson hailed Evans for his comedy chops in the action-packed film, suggesting they played off each other well while on set. According to the wrestler-turned-actor, Evans made it difficult for him to keep a straight face throughout production. "'Cause I'm a pro," he said initially before admitting, "No, so many times I laughed. I am notorious for ruining takes. I laugh; it's just what happens." Johnson added, "I thought earlier that maybe me and Chris might have some good chemistry. So did he. [And] we did."

Dwayne Johnson's Red One Gets Good and Bad News Amid Box Office Struggles
Image
Red One has two more achievements to stuff in its stockings this holiday season. However, the Dwayne Johnson-led Christmas blockbuster looks even more unlikely to make back its hefty budget.

Via Collider, Red One made $12.8 million in North American cinemas during Thanksgiving weekend, bringing its domestic total to $76 million. Combine that tally with the $72 million Red One has earned in overseas territories, and the action comedy now stands at $148 million globally, bringing it closer to the $150 million mark. Along with that feat, Red One is now one of the top 25 highest-grossing movies of 2024, nipping The Beekeeper, the film led by Johnson's Hobbs & Shaw co-star Jason Statham, to make the list. These achievements add to a recent career box-office mark Johnson reached thanks to the film.

Terrifier (2016) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Art the Clown. He’s a homicidal maniac. He’s a supernatural being. He’s disgusting. He’s amusing. He’s the latest cinematic madman to be added to the ranks of genre icons. And he’s been around longer than you might realize. He’s been lurking around for a couple of decades. His breakthrough moment came with the 2016 movie Terrifier – and we’re going to examine that film… and the bad clown at the heart of it all… with this episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie?

Writer/director Damien Leone first brought Art the Clown into the world with a short film called The 9th Circle, which was shot in 2006.The story centers on a young woman who’s creeped out by a strange clown in a train station. The clown ends up attacking her, delivering her to a coven of witches that are in direct contact with Satan himself.

The Real Myth Behind 'Red One's Grýla, Explained
Image
Red One made its debut quite early this Christmas season, premiering in theaters worldwide on November 15, 2024. However, the early release is justified, given that the film was initially set to release in December 2023 and was delayed due to the Saf-aftra strikes. The film joins a genre which has been gaining increasing popularity in recent times; the Christmas action film genre.

The film puts its own creative spin on the genre, with the narrative of Red One following a rescue mission after Father Christmas is kidnapped by a fearsome winter witch who is also able to shape-shift. Giving the Christmas film an almost CIA-like quality, Red One has organizations with the most interesting acronyms, code words, high-tech equipment and talented hackers. Supported by a star-studded cast, including Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu and J. K. Simmon, Red One offers all that you can expect from a Christmas action film.

'Red One' Star J.K. Simmons Made Children Cry When Playing a Mall Santa Before Dwayne Johnson Action Movie
Image
Before he played a beefed-up Santa in the new Christmas movie Red One, J.K. Simmons has revealed that he played jolly old Saint Nick many years ago in a shopping mall. The beloved actor has played many memorable roles, most notably that of Spider-Mans J. Jonah Jameson in several Marvel movies, but his latest appearance alongside Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans is not the first time he has experienced the role of Santa Claus.

While many fans will be aware that he previously voiced the one-night-a-year worker (nice job if you can get it) in the animated movie Klaus, the actor revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that he has a much older affinity with Father Christmas from his day as a mall Santa, although he was possibly not the best fit for the wholesome role. He explained:

Red One Dashes to Major Box Office Milestone, But Faces Tough Sledding to Make a Profit
Image
Red One decks the box-office halls by achieving its first major milestone since its release earlier this month. However, the Dwayne Johnson-led Christmas movie may not receive many more gifts during its theatrical run as it faces stiff competition from new and upcoming blockbusters.

Via Collider, Red One is expected to cross the $100 million mark at the global box office on Nov. 22, with $55 million coming from overseas territories. The news is encouraging considering Red One endured tough sledding with an underwhelming opening weekend in North American cinemas, making $32.1 million over its first three days. The film's early tally also helped Johnson cross the $14 billion mark for his career as he searches for his first major commercial hit since Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.

While Red One Received Poor Critics' Reviews, Audiences Are Loving Dwayne Johnson & Chris Evans' New 2024 Holiday Movie On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Red One has already earned some redemption from its dire initial reviews from critics. Starring Dwayne Johnson (Callum Drift) and Chris Evans (Jack O'Malley), the movie is an action flick that follows the kidnapping of Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons). It had an enormous $250 million budget and was released in theaters on November 15 for domestic audiences. Amazon MGM has not yet confirmed when Red One will head to streaming platforms.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the holiday movie has proven to be extremely divisive. It debuted with a Rotten 32% Tomatometer score from critics. Top critics were even more negative, assigning just a 25% score. The audience, however, has been kinder. It currently sits at an 88% Popcornmeter score, which is enough to earn a Hot designation. It has over 100 reviews from critics and over 500 verified ratings from general viewers at the time of writing.

Where To Watch Red One: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans' Christmas action movie underwent a few changes regarding the options for where to watch Red One. The combination of the two major movie stars was enough to get Amazon MGM to back the original action title that reunited The Rock with his Jumanji franchise director, Jake Kasdan. With Dwayne Johnson's box office track record and Chris Evans' notoriety after playing Captain America, the movie became a promising opportunity for them to unite and deliver either a major box office or streaming hit - or possibly both - although that was before Red One's reviews.

Amazon MGM originally had planned for Red One to release in Christmas 2023, but the film ultimately was kept away from audiences until November 2024. The twist came with the studio deciding that the way audiences first get to see the movie will also be different once it arrives. This is because...

Red One Review: Dwayne Johnson's Joyless Dud Is An Epic Christmess That Takes Itself Way Too Seriously
Image
It might not be the holidays yet, but Amazon MGM want you to hang up your stockings early for Red One, the high-concept caper starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, and Jk Simmons. Johnson plays the role he was born for: a hulking head of security to Simmons' Santa Claus, who is disillusioned with humanity's lack of goodness, and one day from retirement.

Like Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, which Johnson collaborated on with Red One director Jake Kasdan, the festive adventure aims for action comedy. When Santa is kidnapped, Johnson's inexplicably immortal Callum Drift teams up with Level 4 Naughty Lister Jack O'Malley (Evans), who is a master thief, hacker, and somehow has had the superpower of being able to find people or things since childhood. Don't worry, that's not really important enough to be explained beyond it helping the plot lurch forward.

Baywatch is one of the most famous TV shows of all time and has since reached cult classic status. In 2017, the TV show was turned into a film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron, and it was one of Johnson's most disappointing projects.

However, Baywatch has just hit Netflix and found new success on the streaming service, climbing up to No. 8 on the global charts for the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 3. Red One Review | A Surprisingly Clever Christmas Action-Comedy
Image
What if Santa Claus wasn't rotund and tinkering with toys in a quaint North Pole, but an absolutely jacked presidential figure running a glimmering, high-tech frozen metropolis? Red One offers a surprisingly clever take on Christmas mythology. The big-budget action-comedy delivers the requisite popcorn entertainment with visual splendor, but also succeeds in building its own new universe with truly memorable characters. Actors Dwayne Johnson and a hilarious Chris Evans play well off each other when the narrative runs sluggish during overextended scenes.

We're first introduced to a young Jack O'Malley (Wyatt Hunt) at his family's Christmas party. He's the product of a broken home, already has a sarcastic disposition, and doesn't believe in Santa Claus. He brands the other kids chumps for believing such a ridiculous fable. How can one guy travel around the world in one night and sneak into billions of homes undetected with a reindeer-powered sled? What...

Catherine Corcoran of Terrifier to star in thriller Jackalope
Image
Catherine Corcoran’s character Dawn was at the center of one of the most famous moments in the slasher movie Terrifier (a scene she reflected on a while back) – but Terrifier wasn’t her first credit in a genre movie, and she has gone on to work on several more genre movies since the release of that killer clown movie, including Faceless After Dark, which reunited her with Terrifier co-star Jenna Kanell. The Terrifier Franchise Doesn't Offer Anything Beyond Sheer Violence
Image
First appearing in 2016 and the latest installment hitting theaters this year, the Terrifier franchise has been a success among horror fans with its scenes of unrelenting violence and chief antagonist, Art the Clown. The series is a saving grace for many fans who have been craving the type of escapism and macabre awe that seems to have been missing from the slasher genre. Up until recently, many fans voiced their discontent regarding many offerings that are tame in comparison and lack the operatic levels of violence that the Terrifier franchise is so unapologetic in depicting.

On the one hand, the series deserves praise for its use of practical effects and carnage that have reportedly traumatized some members of the viewing audience. The Terrifier franchise has found a fan base who crave violence and enjoy the feeling of being shocked. Beyond this surface level of visceral imagery and attempted transgression, there exists little else.

Terrifier: Who Plays Art the Clown?
Image
Thanks to a lackluster response to “Joker: Folie a Deux,” the unrated horror film “Terrifier 3” opened in the no. 1 position in theaters this weekend — allowing a different clown to take down the more famous one. The movie, which was released in 2,514 theaters, earned $8.1 million on opening day.

Fans of the film have a renewed interest in its villain Art the Clown, who was first featured in the 2013 movie “All Hallows’ Eve.”

What is “Terrifier”?

“Terrifier” is a 2016 horror film written and directed by Damien Leone. The movie is about two sisters — played by Jenna Kanell and Samantha Scaffidi — who become the target of a serial killer known as Art the Clown.

Along with his early appearance in “All Hallows’ Eve,” the original “Terrifier” film has now spawned the sequels “Terrifier 2” and “Terrifier 3.”

Terrifier 3 Director Defends the Horror Trilogy From 'Misogyny' Complaints
Image
Terrifier 3 is building up Terrifier 2's final girl as the Laurie Strode of the series. It's not the Halloween franchise yet, but director Damien Leone teased big plans for Sienna Shaw, the Terrifier sequel's strong female protagonist.

Director Damien Leone said he's amused at comments that his Terrifier films are misogynistic. He told IndieWire that Terrifier instead champions women by leaning heavily on the Final Girl trope. "I don't think it's a funny matter, but it's so not me that I do find it kind of hilarious," he asserted. "It's also a trope that I grew up loving. The Final Girl is such a powerful element to these movies, and I don't think it's as impactful if it's a Final Man. Men are just more reprehensible in general, and you're already used to seeing them die [in other genres]."

Fans Express Disappointment Over Chris Evans’ Latest Film, Questioning His Career Direction

Chris Evans’ journey as Captain America in the MCU, from his debut in a stand-alone film to becoming one of the franchise’s most iconic characters before retiring in Endgame to live with Peggy in the past, has been immensely popular. Fans have grown to love both the actor and the character.

However, his upcoming project, Red One, has sparked disappointment among fans, who feel it falls below his talent level. Some have voiced their frustration, comparing Evans to fellow MCU star Ryan Reynolds, whose career choices have also been criticized as trivial and overly comedic.

After Deadpool & Wolverine, Chris Evans’ next project is the holiday action-comedy Red One, where he plays a character named Jack O’Malley, a hacker and bounty hunter.

Chris Evans’s MCU journey as Captain America, who made his film debut in a stand-alone film and went on to become one of the MCU’s most significant characters until retiring in Endgame and choosing to stay with Peggy in past, was an extremely popular one and the fans are now loving both the actor and the character.

And while Chris Evans’ MCU career is more or less over, at least in the capacity it was, the fans still have a lot of respect for him and are following his career passionately.

In light of that, the fans have been commenting on Chris Evan’s upcoming project, Red One, which they deem to be below his acting level; some of the fans are bitterly disappointed and are comparing Evans to fellow MCU actor Ryan Reynolds, whose choices have also often been criticized for being trivial and silly.

‘Faceless After Dark’ Review
Image
Stars: Jenna Kanell, Danielle Lyn, Danny Kang, Max Calder, Michael Aaron Milligan, Kathrine Barnes, Catherine Corcoran, Erin Day, Alexis Louder | Written by Jenna Kanell, Todd Jacobs | Directed by Raymond Wood

Faceless After Dark opens with a warning about the film’s use of strobing lights, and immediately we see Bowie sitting staring at the camera as neon purple lights flash on her face as the image grows progressively smaller and unintelligible voices babble louder and louder. That and several long, eye-straining montages scattered through the film make the warning more than justified

Next we see her armed with a machete making her way through a human butcher shop, only to be confronted by the killer clown responsible for the carnage. And then mid-fight, she stops and complains about having to deliver the line, “Haven’t you heard, the circus left town bitch!”

Bowie is an actress, and that role has...

The Smartest Horror Movie Heroes, Ranked
Image
Horror movies often meet criticism for their protagonists and the usual point of contention lies within the main characters' lack of resourcefulness. In short, horror movie characters aren't known to be the brightest. While many jokes and parodies have made fun of this critique, especially in the Scary Movie franchise, it does not ring true for all horror heroes.

The cream of the crop of horror protagonists makes the best out of the worst situation. Whether it is a character using cotton to drown out the chimes of a hypnotic teacup to a sleep-deprived girl booby-trapping her house, these horror characters make sure to fight back with all their might. The smartest horror heroes of them all not only fight back but overcome their foes by assessing their situation, thinking on their feet, and remaining calm in the most dire of situations.

Salem Horror Fest 2024 Kicks Off With Scream Queen Linnea Quigley and ‘The People’s Joker’ [Event Report]
Image
From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.

After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.

But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

‘Faceless After Dark’ Review – ‘Terrifier’ Star Jenna Kanell Slashes Toxic Fandom in Meta Horror Movie
Image
In the wake of Terrifier‘s breakout success, star Jenna Kanell has gone on to book supporting roles in the likes of Renfield, WandaVision, The Bye Bye Man, and NCIS: New Orleans — but Art the Clown casts a long shadow. Kanell reconciles her unconventional journey while holding a mirror up to the industry in Faceless After Dark, which she co-wrote with Todd Jacobs for director Raymond Wood, both frequent collaborators.

Kanell stars as Bowie Davidson, an actress struggling to break out from the shackles of B-horror after starring in a killer clown movie. She’s no stranger to fandom — peddling herself at conventions, recording Cameo videos, combating social media harassment — but when an obsessive fanatic in a clown mask breaks into her house, Bowie assumes the role of the final girl to fight back against her oppressors.

The home invasion is ostensibly propelling toward a tense game of cat-and-mouse between Bowie and her stalker,...

Screambox Serves Up a Holiday Feast With ‘Secret Santa’, ‘Night of the Missing’, ‘Santastein’ and More!
Image
Tis the season to be scary and Screambox has got you covered with a trio of brand-spanking-new Christmas-themed horror movies that go perfectly with cookies and milk in front of a warm fire.

Now streaming on Screambox from the director of Jason Goes to Hell is Secret Santa and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.

That’s not all! Just in time for Christmas break, Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent on Dec. 19.

Since Black Christmas, holiday films have been a refreshing sub-genre within horror. These films offer a much-needed contrast to the “all is well” narrative that is so often depicted in seasonal films. The angst and anxiety of holiday horror offer a cathartic release because for many the holidays are not perfect, and we don’t see ourselves in the yuletide rom-coms.

In fact, Screambox has more than stocking stuffers, with...
