Image
One of 2024's best horror novels is getting the film treatment, and seems to be on the fast track to development after recently casting its young lead. Written by Josh Malerman (Bird Box), Incidents Around the House is set to be retitled to Other Mommy when it hits the big screen in 2026 thanks to Universal and Atomic Monster, the same company behind 2021's Mortal Kombat and its upcoming sequel.

Per Deadline, eight-year-old Arabella Olivia Clark (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) has snagged the lead in Other Mommy, taking on the role of Bela, the novel's protagonist. Directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Nathan Elston, she joins previously announced cast members Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass and Dichen Lachman.

Other Mommy | What’s Host director Rob Savage’s next film about?
Image
Rob Savage’s next horror film will hit cinemas in May 2026. But what’s Other Mommy about? We’re glad you asked…

Featured image: The Boogeyman (2023)

If you were scared senseless by Rob Savage’s Covid-era screamfest Host, you’ve likely been keeping tabs on the British director. Blumhouse also noticed his talents after Host and offered him a three-picture deal, keeping the filmmaker well and truly busy after his transition from indie films to Hollywood.

The first of those films was 2021’s somewhat controversial Dashcam. But 2026 will see the release of the second film Savage has made with Blumhouse. Titled Other Mommy, it sounds like an interesting companion movie to Savage’s 2023 horror, The Boogeyman.

This writer is keen on seeing what else Savage has in store for us, and we’re betting you are, too. With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about Other Mommy.

The 15 Best Horror Movies On Hulu
Image
When you think about the best streamers for movie-lovers, it's possible that Hulu might not rise to the top of your list. It has a deceptively deep library, though, as its affiliation with Disney and (what used to be) 20th Century Fox sees a lot of catalog titles making a temporary home there. Like Netflix, the streamer still focuses on relatively newer releases, but there are gems both old and new to be found if you dig through its offerings.

That's true across the board, but for our purposes here, it's also true when looking for good horror movies. The films below aren't ranked, but they're all very good to great examples of the varied tones, styles, and subgenres that horror has to offer. Monsters, killers, devils, and more await -- most will want to kill you, some want to make you laugh (before killing you), and all of them want to scare,...

Incidents Around the House: Dichen Lachman joins Jessica Chastain and Jay Duplass in horror film
Dichen Lachman
Dichen Lachman has had roles in Jurassic World: Dominion and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and may be best known for playing Ms. Casey on the Apple TV+ series Severance. Now, it has been announced that Lachman has joined Jessica Chastain (It Chapter Two) and Jay Duplass (Dying for Sex) in the supernatural horror film that The Boogeyman director Rob Savage is making for Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. Although this project is based on Bird Box author Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, it doesn’t currently have an official title. In fact, it’s being referred to as the Untiled Rob Savage Supernatural Horror Film. I think they should just stick with Incidents Around the House.

Details on the character Lachman will be playing in the film have not been revealed. The story revolves around a haunting told from the perspective of a young girl...

Pendulum: Jacki Weaver joins Darren Aronofsky-produced horror film

Darren Aronofsky and Mark Heyman have worked together several times over the years. Heyman was Aronofsky’s assistant when he made The Fountain, then he was the co-producer on The Wrestler, a writer on Black Swan, and an executive producer on Mother! So now that Heyman is set to make his feature directorial debut with the horror film Pendulum, it’s good to see that Aronofsky is there to back him up, producing the film through his company Protozoa. ‘Cut Outs’ – Twisty Sci-Fi Thriller on the Way from ‘Companion’ Producers
Raphael Margules
J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the producing duo behind BoulderLight Pictures whose credits include Companion and Barbarian, are looking to deliver another twisty sci-fi thriller in Cut Outs, Deadline reports today.

Cut Outs is an original sci-fi thriller spec script by writer Isaac Louis García.

Naturally, plot details are under wraps at this time, but the expectation is that it’ll follow in the same unpredictable vein as BoulderLight’s recent genre hits. Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, was released in January after a mysterious marketing campaign that kept things close to the vest. Zach Cregger’s feature debut, Barbarian, took a similar approach in preserving its narrative surprises before release.

The BoulderLight team is also behind Cregger’s follow-up, Weapons, releasing this summer, as well as Jaume Collet-Serra’s Play Dead and Rob Savage’s Molepeople. Not only does this signal that BoulderLight is keeping busy with their genre slate,...

New Line Lands Hot Sci-Fi Thriller Spec ‘Cut Outs’ From Isaac Louis García; BoulderLight To Produce

Exclusive: New Line has preemptively acquired Cut Outs, an original sci-fi thriller spec by Isaac Louis García.

J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the duo behind buzzy genre outfit BoulderLight Pictures, are set to produce via their first-look deal with the studio. Plot details are under wraps, but in line with the company’s past work — including the recent sci-fi thriller Companion and their horror thriller breakout Barbarian — you can expect that this will be another fun, fresh, twisty piece of material. Tracy Rosenblum is set to oversee the project for the company.

An alum of the AFI Conservatory, García has worked in multiple writers’ rooms, the most recent being for Duster, the crime thriller series reuniting Lost‘s J.J. Abrams and Josh Hollowya, which premieres on Max May 15. Previously, he’s also been a part of Angelyne at Peacock and Alan Ball’s HBO series Here and Now, placing in...

Le Croque-mitaine (2023)
Last week, we learned that The Boogeyman director Rob Savage, Succession writer Nathan Elston, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye Oscar winner Jessica Chastain are teaming up for a film adaptation of Bird Box author Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Malerman adaptation is in the works, as “rising screenwriter” Jenna Mattison has been hired to write a screenplay based on Malerman’s novella Decorum at the Deathbed – a story that was released exclusively as an Audible Original that has a runtime of 73 minutes.

Jenna Mattison Adapting Josh Malerman’s ‘Decorum At The Deathbed’ For ‘Bird Box’ Scribe’s Spin A Black Yarn
Image
Exclusive: Rising screenwriter Jenna Mattison has been tapped to script an adaptation of Decorum at the Deathbed, the 2021 novella from Bird Box‘s Josh Malerman, for the New York Times bestseller’s production house Spin a Black Yarn.

Released exclusively as an Audible Original, Decorum at the Deathbed follows a grieving widow that starts a twisted affair with the detective investigating the mutilated deer that keep appearing in the forest behind her house. But as the relationship deepens he begins to wonder if she’s truly a victim or a sociopathic killer. A disturbing and terrifying tale unearthing the dark shadows of the mind and finding redemption in the most unexpected of places.

Josh Malerman

The story is described as an elevated psychological thriller — Body Heat meets Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart. The search for a director is underway, with Malerman and his producing partner Ryan Lewis set to produce for Spin a Black Yarn.

Mattison is no stranger to bestselling authors, having adapted novels by James Patterson and Sophie Kinsella, as well as being brought on in 2024 to adapt Dying to Be Me, the New York Times bestselling cancer memoir by Anita Moorjani. Currently, she’s serving as writer and executive producer on a TV series in development at Universal based on an international bestseller from Patterson. She’s also in pre-pro on Haunted, another of her films to be shot in Thailand with the Sundance and Independent Spirit Award-nominated Rosemary Rodriguez directing. Previously, Mattison wrote, directed and produced The Sound, a psychological thriller released theatrically by Orion and Samuel Goldwn.

Malerman is best known for his New York Times bestseller Bird Box, the post-apocalyptic horror thriller adapted into Netflix’s 2018 film of the same name. Directed by Susanne Bier and starring Sandra Bullock, the feature take stood for a time as the most popular film in the streamer’s history, currently sitting at #5 on Netflix’s most popular films list. A spin-off sequel, Bird Box: Barcelona, on which Malerman was an EP, premiered on Netflix in 2023.

Just recently, Malerman set up a feature adaptation of his horror novel Incidents Around the House at Universal, with Jessica Chastain to star and Rob Savage directing, as we were first to report. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse will produce in association with Spin a Black Yarn, with pre-production underway.

Mattison is repped by Gersh, manager Geoff Silverman of Evoke Entertainment, and Cohen & Gardner; Malerman by Ryan Lewis of Spin a Black Yarn, Kristin Nelson of Nelson Literary Agency, and Wayne Alexander of Alexander Lawrence Frumes & Labowitz.

Well, it looks like supernatural horror movies are her thing because her upcoming project Incidents Around the House looks to be of the same genre.

Adaptation of Horror Comic ‘Dungeon’ in the Works from ‘Late Night with the Devil’ Producers
Image
Idw Entertainment is teaming up with Steven Schneider and Roy Lee’s Spooky Pictures (Late Night with the Devil) to adapt the horror comic Dungeon by Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman, THR reports today.

The serial killer tale ran as a five-issue comic miniseries in 2023 and 2024.

Dungeon begins “when a family moves from the Big Apple to upstate New York to escape the hustle and bustle. However, their father’s dream of a quiet rural life is shattered when he discovers a dungeon underneath their land, filled with torture devices, weapons, and a threatening message on the wall that reads, ‘Tell No One.’ The discovery sets up a paranoid serial kidnapping mystery where no one, not even the father’s child, is safe, and not even the FBI agent assigned to the case can help.”

Schneider and Lee will produce the adaptation along with Daniel Kendrick of Idw Entertainment, the screen arm of Idw Publishing.

‘Late Night with the Devil’ Producers Tackling Adaptation of Scott Snyder Comic ‘Dungeon’ (Exclusive)

Schneider and Lee will produce the adaptation along with Daniel Kendrick of Idw Entertainment, the screen arm of Idw Publishing.

10 PG-13 Horror Movies That Would Have Benefited From An R-Rating
Image
Plenty of great horror movies would have been even more frightening, unnerving, and effective had they received the strict adult-only R-rating. While PG-13 movies have the potential to explore some gruesome and terrifying concepts, filmmakers are limited in how much gore they show or how depraved the psychological torment their characters experience can be. Although all these horror movies had their scary moments, an R rating would have allowed them to take extra steps in the realm of overwhelming terror.

While it’s understandable that film studios often wish to pursue a PG-13 rating wherever possible, as this allows for tickets to be purchased by more consumers, horror movies are often more effective with an R-rating. Whether it's through more intense visuals or a deeper adult-oriented exploration of characters, R-rated horrors represent some of the best scary movies ever made. Although all these horror movies have value, it’s hard...

'Heretic's Sophie Thatcher Elevated This Stephen King Horror Movie From Scary to Deeply Devastating
Image
While it's wonderful that the horror genre is constantly trying out new ideas and concepts, sometimes all you need is a classic creature feature. After all, It's films like these that first put the genre on the map. Nothing scares as consistently as putting a cast of characters up against a horrific beast thirsty for their blood. It's a premise that audiences find in Rob Savage's The Boogeyman, an adaptation of the short story by Stephen King with a script from Heretic directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The 2023 movie follows the Harper family reeling from not only the death of their mother and wife but also the shadowy beast that has begun to stalk their every move.

‘Heretic’ Filmmakers on Their Thought-Provoking Ending and “Battle Campaign” to Cast Hugh Grant in Villain Role
Image
[This story contains some mild spoilers for Heretic.]

The heavens have smiled on Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ Heretic.

Critics and audiences are of the belief that their fourth outing as writer-directors is their finest work yet, and it’s been a long time coming considering the Iowa natives’ thought-provoking religious horror movie was conceived before they broke out as the co-writers and originators of A Quiet Place (2018). The film is largely a three-hander between two Mormon missionaries, Sisters Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East), and a potential convert named Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Upon entering the Englishman’s home in order to peddle the wares of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the two missionaries soon realize they’ve been ensnared in a terrifying game of wits that is meant to test and contradict their faith.

Knowing that Barnes and Paxton had knocked on the door of a religious scholar, the childhood best...
