American Cinematheque’s Proof Film Festival announced the Filmmaker Award winners at their second annual festival in Culver City on Sunday.

This year’s festival featured 46 official short film selections. Each one had to convey a proof of concept of how the filmmakers would develop their short into a full-length feature or series.

Liz Sargent’s “Take Me Home” took home the Grand Jury Award. Her short film follows two sisters, Anna and Emily, as they share a rocky reunion after their mother’s passing. The two navigate Anna’s cognitive disability as they rebuild their relationship. Along with the award, Sargent also received a $60,000 camera package, courtesy of Panavision, to assist her with fleshing out a larger project from their proof-of-concept submission.

The American Cinematheque has announced the schedule of events and list of speakers for this year’s Proof Film Festival, which will take place from Oct. 18-20 at the Culver Theater. The festival will feature 46 official selections in addition to industry panels, special screenings, centerpiece conversations and the Proof Pitch Deck Show & Tell.

For girls in these communities, life is about obeying their parents until the time comes for authority to hand power over to their husbands. When "Stranger Things" launched in 2016, most of its cast were virtual unknowns. Aside from veteran stars like Winona Ryder, the show was the first leading role for many of its cast members, especially the younger kids. Before Romeo fell for Juliet, he lusted after her cousin, Rosaline. He exalted her beauty to his friends (“The all-seeing sun / ne’er saw her match since first the world begun”) and bemoaned her rejection (“She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / Do I live dead that live to tell it now”). To hoist the lovelorn Montague heir out of the depths of his dramatic doting, Romeo’s cousins encourage him to sneak into a Capulet supper. There he meets Juliet, and so begins their epic romance.

There have been attempts to nudge Rosaline out of the margins, to flesh a person out of a ghostly image. In some adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy, like Carlo Carlei’s Romeo & Juliet (2013), she gets more than a passing mention. In others, her presence is the point. Rosaline, which premieres on Hulu on Oct.

Watching “Rosaline” one can’t help but think of the Shakespeare-inspired or period-set films aimed at teens in the late-’90s, like “10 Things I Hate About You” or “Ever After” to name just a couple. They are smart, often stridently feminist through their character’s actions not just their words, and they don’t talk down to their audience or feel the need to make the source material “hip.” Yet, somehow Karen Maine’s latest film, based on a young adult novel by Rebecca Serle, achieves none of those feats.

Rosaline is mentioned 10 times in William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” her name invoked at moments when it seems opportune to remind Romeo that, indeed, his heart did love before he set eyes on charming Juliet, and yes, his ability to drop face-first into ill-fated love affairs is kind of his thing. And while Rosaline lurks at the margins of Shakespeare’s play, she doesn’t get a single line to speak, instead reduced to jilted has-been and cautionary tale. But Romeo’s ex has not been forgotten in the intervening centuries, and her side of the story has been dramatized plenty, including the 1966 film “Juliet in Mantua,” the play “After Juliet,” the musical “& Juliet,” and the book and its adapted TV series “Still Star-Crossed” (in which she was played by rising star Lashana Lynch).

The only problem is that few are really successful at this gambit, with most leaning too hard on the novelty of seeing corset-clad women and chainmail-wearing men spout trendy slang. Unfortunately, "Rosaline," the comedic twist on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," but told from the perspective of Romeo's spurned former lover as she desperately tries to win him back, falls in the latter category.

Simply by invoking the name Juliet, Hulu’s Rosaline, a comic retelling of Shakespeare from the perspective of Juliet’s jilted cousin, is working in a crowded field. On the sliding scale of loose literary adaptations, Rosaline lands within the territory of the purely enjoyable modernizations – Clueless, She’s the Man, 10 Things I Hate About You. In the realm of anachronistic period comedies, it’s working in a similar lane to Autumn de Wilde’s biting Emma, Lena Dunham’s delightfully profane Catherine Called Birdy or the ahistorical feminism of the Apple TV series Dickinson. It’s certainly better than this summer’s Persuasion, Netflix’s Fleabag-inspired Jane Austen spin which flattened the novel’s abundant wit into a slangy, fourth wall-smashing drag.

Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, but what about Romeo’s spurned lover, Rosaline? She’s been pushed to the side and forgotten about…until now. The new trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Rosaline tells the story of Romeo and Juliet from Rosaline’s point of view.

The trailer shows poor Rosaline is upset that her boyfriend is using the same lovely words to woo Juliet that he used on her just three days prior. Rosaline’s the one who’s supposed to be Romeo’s great love and future wife, yet Romeo doesn’t seem to care one iota that he’s so easily replaced her with her very own cousin. Damn the man.

The prequel story to William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” play is reimagined with the first set of star-crossed lovers to meet a heartbreaking end, as reimagined by novelist Rebecca Serle in the 2010 YA book “When You Were Mine.”

Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the duo behind adaptations for “The Fault in Our Stars,” “The Disaster Artist,” and the upcoming series “Daisy Jones and the Six,” penned the screenplay for the Hulu film “Rosaline” based on Serle’s novel. The film premieres October 14 on the streaming platform.

Kaitlyn Dever stars as the titular character previously unseen and only referenced in Shakespeare’s play. The film is described as a fresh comedic twist on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in which the classic love story is told from the perspective of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline…who just happens to be Romeo’s ex-girlfriend.

20th Century Studios has unveiled first-look photos for its Romeo & Juliet reimagining Rosaline, starring 2022 Emmy nominee Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick), at the same time announcing that the film will stream October 14 as a Hulu Original in the U.S., on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories.

The film directed by Karen Maine is a romantic comedy told from the perspective of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline (Dever), who also happens to be Romeo’s recent love interest. Heartbroken when Romeo (Kyle Allen) meets Juliet (Isabela Merced) and begins to pursue her, Rosaline schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy.

Sean Teale (Skins), Minnie Driver (Speechless) and Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale) also star in the pic, which 500 Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber adapted from the novel When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle.

Exclusive: Jacob Batalon, Alana Boden, Adain Bradley and Avantika have been cast as the leads in Screen Gems and Alloy Entertainment’s Horrorscope, based on Alloy’s same-name novel, written by Nicholas Adams. Humberly González and Wolfgang Novogratz have also joined the cast.

Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen wrote the script and will make their feature film directorial debut. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton are producing through Alloy, along with Scott Glassgold of Ground Control. Cohen & Halberg are also on board to executive produce.

The story follows a group of college friends who after getting their horoscopes read, begin dying in ways connected to their fortunes. Are their fates fatal or can they change what’s written in the stars? The pic is set for a fall start and is being overseen by Scott Strauss, Michael Bitar and Lariah Perara at Screen Gems.

“Prey,” which is set in the “Predator” universe — with an Indigenous woman as its lead — will stream on Hulu in the United States in summer 2022. In some international markets, it will stream on Disney Plus under the Star brand, and in Latin America, it will premiere on Star Plus.

Reports about the existence of a “Predator” reboot were out there, but its first look, title and the timing of its release were officially announced on Friday as part of its Disney Plus Day promotional event. “Prey” is produced by Jhane Myers, and is one of a slate of films from 20th Century Studios.
