Going to a religious retreat can be quite an experience for a teenager. From the holy tunes to the moral teachings, these retreats serve to instill unadulterated ethics in the young who are still navigating puberty and their own sexuality, which they are taught to view with shame. Karen Maine's feature film debut,Yes, God, Yes (2020), is a funny, coming-of-age film starring Stranger Things'Natalia Dyer, who plays Alice, a Catholic school teenager who has just discovered masturbation. It also delves into the strict purity culture of this small-town Catholic high school that doesn't necessarily practice what it preaches. From the beginning, Alice struggles to suppress this newfound desire as she is surrounded by her classmates, friends, and teachers who will shame her for feeling curious about her body. Maine perfectly captures the reality of what it's like to be slut-shamed over a false rumor and the judgment Alice faces...

Chris Columbus is well aware that his producer credit on Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has prompted a few double takes from the audience. One would assume that the filmmaker behind two Home Alone films, Mrs. Doubtfire and two Harry Potter pics would have little overlap with Eggers’ idiosyncratic approach to genre films. But one of the goals of Maiden Voyage, Chris and his daughter Eleanor’s production company, is to show that filmmakers contain multitudes.
The journey to father-daughter Columbus producing their third film for Eggers — and fourteenth overall under the Maiden Voyage banner — hinges on several different factors. The first is producorial philosophy, which Chris established during the course of making the film franchise-launching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). The filmmaker wasn’t completely satisfied with the Devil’s Snare sequence, so he requested some CG-related augmentations that an executive producer ultimately rebuffed.

American Cinematheque’s Proof Film Festival announced the Filmmaker Award winners at their second annual festival in Culver City on Sunday.
This year’s festival featured 46 official short film selections. Each one had to convey a proof of concept of how the filmmakers would develop their short into a full-length feature or series.
Liz Sargent’s “Take Me Home” took home the Grand Jury Award. Her short film follows two sisters, Anna and Emily, as they share a rocky reunion after their mother’s passing. The two navigate Anna’s cognitive disability as they rebuild their relationship. Along with the award, Sargent also received a $60,000 camera package, courtesy of Panavision, to assist her with fleshing out a larger project from their proof-of-concept submission.

Few things are more personal than one's religious beliefs and masturbation, representing opposing extremes of the sacred and the profane. Few things have been historically considered lower than self-pleasure, and few higher than the pursuit of God. Karen Maine's 2020 debut feature film Yes, God, Yes attempts to reconcile the two as valid facets of human nature, particularly of growing up. The trope of Catholic guilt is one that has been prominent in every form of media, especially in film. It can be seen in the gritty, bombastic bravado of Mean Streets, or in the irreverent magical realism of Dogma. However, where Yes, God Yes creates a unique niche for itself that doesn't retread past territory is in its specificity. The plot of the film can easily be described in a brief sentence without leaving out any necessary information: "A Catholic teenager discovers masturbation." Maine excels in brevity, yes (the...

For many, especially in the South, Christianity isn’t just a religion; it’s a way of life. In these communities, the Bible is interpreted literally, with rigid gender roles and customs that favor purity over all else. Modesty is taught to young girls early, with emphasis on their bodies being covered at all times. Long skirts, sweaters even when it’s hot, long hair, no make-up, a demure demeanor. For girls in these communities, life is about obeying their parents until the time comes for authority to hand power over to their husbands. But in the center of it all is the church: an all-knowing, all-seeing entity that must be feared and respected, with the penalty of being turned away at the gates of Heaven. Life on Earth is about the fate of one’s immortal soul. To want anything else is to be overtaken by the grip of Satan.

When "Stranger Things" launched in 2016, most of its cast were virtual unknowns. Aside from veteran stars like Winona Ryder, the show was the first leading role for many of its cast members, especially the younger kids. Part of what made the show work so well was the fact that all those young kids were supremely-talented. The Netflix hit asks a lot from its stars — lots of action, lots of emotion — and every member of the ever-growing ensemble is up to the task, which makes for a fun watch.
It's also a useful launching pad for further stardom. The series tends to take breaks between seasons — three years passed between Seasons 3 and 4 — leaving the cast free to pursue other acting opportunities. This raises their profiles, providing them a solid base from which to hopefully continue their careers after "Stranger Things" comes to an end with its fifth season. Unsurprisingly, a lot...

For Kaitlyn Dever, starring as the titular heroine in Hulu's "Rosaline" was a dream come true. She tells Popsugar that she first heard about the project - which reimagines "Romeo and Juliet" from the perspective of Romeo's first love and Juliet's cousin, Rosaline - years ago when she was 15. The actor, now 25, says that even when she read the script back then, "it was always something that was super special," adding, "I think society needs time to catch up with certain projects." The movie stayed in her head as an idea, and when screenwriter Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber called her up to ask if she wanted the lead part for real, she was thrilled.
During the film's production, she met two of her idols: Minnie Driver and Bradley Whitford, whom she calls "icons and literal legends." Dever admits she is a huge fan of the movie "Ella Enchanted,...

A modern twist on a centuries-old Shakespeare play? Well, Emmy nominee Kaitlyn Dever looked a little closer to home for her inspiration: Her mother.
Dever transformed into the titular jilted heroine for Hulu’s “Rosaline,” directed by Karen Maine and now streaming. The famed story of “Romeo & Juliet” is relived through the point of view of Rosaline, Romeo’s (Kyle Allen) ex and cousin to Juliet (Isabela Merced). It’s not necessarily a great love story when you’re Rosaline.
“I did realize I may have just been playing a heightened version of myself, and then Karen allowed me to just really go for it sometimes and be intense and see this stressful side of Rosaline,” Dever told IndieWire. “I also realize that there are a lot of little things that I specifically realized that my mom does that I do in this movie, which is really fun.”

Kaitlyn Dever may embody one of literature’s most overlooked characters in “Rosaline,” 20th Century Studios’ campy and modernized retelling of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” from the perspective of the forgotten Capulet, but the Emmy-nominated actress is anything but.

Before Romeo fell for Juliet, he lusted after her cousin, Rosaline. He exalted her beauty to his friends (“The all-seeing sun / ne’er saw her match since first the world begun”) and bemoaned her rejection (“She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / Do I live dead that live to tell it now”). To hoist the lovelorn Montague heir out of the depths of his dramatic doting, Romeo’s cousins encourage him to sneak into a Capulet supper. There he meets Juliet, and so begins their epic romance.
There have been attempts to nudge Rosaline out of the margins, to flesh a person out of a ghostly image. In some adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy, like Carlo Carlei’s Romeo & Juliet (2013), she gets more than a passing mention. In others, her presence is the point. Watching “Rosaline” one can’t help but think of the Shakespeare-inspired or period-set films aimed at teens in the late-’90s, like “10 Things I Hate About You” or “Ever After” to name just a couple. They are smart, often stridently feminist through their character’s actions not just their words, and they don’t talk down to their audience or feel the need to make the source material “hip.” Yet, somehow Karen Maine’s latest film, based on a young adult novel by Rebecca Serle, achieves none of those feats.

Rosaline is mentioned 10 times in William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” her name invoked at moments when it seems opportune to remind Romeo that, indeed, his heart did love before he set eyes on charming Juliet, and yes, his ability to drop face-first into ill-fated love affairs is kind of his thing. And while Rosaline lurks at the margins of Shakespeare’s play, she doesn’t get a single line to speak, instead reduced to jilted has-been and cautionary tale. But Romeo’s ex has not been forgotten in the intervening centuries, and her side of the story has been dramatized plenty, including the 1966 film “Juliet in Mantua,” the play “After Juliet,” the musical “& Juliet,” and the book and its adapted TV series “Still Star-Crossed” (in which she was played by rising star Lashana Lynch).

Hollywood sure does love a feminist revisionist retelling. It's an easy sell: take a much-adapted story and give it a contemporary, self-aware spin — maybe with a post-post feminist heroine and a topical message thrown in. The only problem is that few are really successful at this gambit, with most leaning too hard on the novelty of seeing corset-clad women and chainmail-wearing men spout trendy slang. Unfortunately, "Rosaline," the comedic twist on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," but told from the perspective of Romeo's spurned former lover as she desperately tries to win him back, falls in the latter category.
Directed by Karen Maine, "Rosaline" is the unfortunate result of when two men ("500 Days of Summer" scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber) attempt to write a feminist retelling. The romantic comedy is painfully self-aware but rarely clever, instead falling back on rom-com tropes that were creaky back in the modern...

The Booksmart star excels in a winning anachronistic retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy from the perspective of Romeo’s ex and Juliet’s jilted cousin
Simply by invoking the name Juliet, Hulu’s Rosaline, a comic retelling of Shakespeare from the perspective of Juliet’s jilted cousin, is working in a crowded field. On the sliding scale of loose literary adaptations, Rosaline lands within the territory of the purely enjoyable modernizations – Clueless, She’s the Man, 10 Things I Hate About You. In the realm of anachronistic period comedies, it’s working in a similar lane to Autumn de Wilde’s biting Emma, Lena Dunham’s delightfully profane Catherine Called Birdy or the ahistorical feminism of the Apple TV series Dickinson. It’s certainly better than this summer’s Persuasion, Netflix’s Fleabag-inspired Jane Austen spin which flattened the novel’s abundant wit into a slangy, fourth wall-smashing drag.

Avid Shakespeare buffs might already be familiar with Rosaline. She’s not technically in “Romeo and Juliet,” but her name is briefly mentioned in the Bard’s tragedy all the same as an early romantic interest of Romeo Montague. Remember the original lover he follows into a party thrown by his family’s notorious adversaries, the Capulets, only to be struck by the sight of her cousin Juliet? Charming and witty despite being tidily formulaic and a little too tame, Karen Maine’s “Rosaline” delightfully assumes the unsung cousin’s perspective in Renaissance Italy, invading the era with a contemporary tongue and attitude amplified by stringy covers of modern tunes like “All by Myself” and “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love).”

The tale of the young, star-crossed lovers known as "Romeo & Juliet" has been told and retold for centuries, but Hulu and 20th Century Studios have a whole new perspective to bring to the table. In a comedic twist on William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedy, the tale of "Romeo & Juliet" is being retold through the lens of Rosaline, the gal Romeo was exclusively dating before he ran into Juliet at a party and completely turned his entire life (and family) upside down. Rosaline is devastated when she learns that her boyfriend has left her for someone new, and goes on a mission to break the two of them up and win back the man of her dreams.
"Rosaline" looks to be taking the anachronistic approach of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and inverting it, with classic period garb and set dressings injected with contemporary language and sensibilities.

Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, but what about Romeo’s spurned lover, Rosaline? She’s been pushed to the side and forgotten about…until now. The new trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Rosaline tells the story of Romeo and Juliet from Rosaline’s point of view.
The trailer shows poor Rosaline is upset that her boyfriend is using the same lovely words to woo Juliet that he used on her just three days prior. Rosaline’s the one who’s supposed to be Romeo’s great love and future wife, yet Romeo doesn’t seem to care one iota that he’s so easily replaced her with her very own cousin. Damn the man.
Emmy Award nominee Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick) stars as the titular character and serves as an executive producer. The cast also includes Sean Teale (Little Voice) as Dario, Minnie Driver (Speechless) as The Nurse,...

Before Romeo and Juliet, there was Romeo and Rosaline.
The prequel story to William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” play is reimagined with the first set of star-crossed lovers to meet a heartbreaking end, as reimagined by novelist Rebecca Serle in the 2010 YA book “When You Were Mine.”
Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the duo behind adaptations for “The Fault in Our Stars,” “The Disaster Artist,” and the upcoming series “Daisy Jones and the Six,” penned the screenplay for the Hulu film “Rosaline” based on Serle’s novel. The film premieres October 14 on the streaming platform.
Kaitlyn Dever stars as the titular character previously unseen and only referenced in Shakespeare’s play. The film is described as a fresh comedic twist on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in which the classic love story is told from the perspective of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline…who just happens to be Romeo’s ex-girlfriend.
