SpectreVision, the production company of Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Lawrence Inglee, has teamed with Norwegian filmmaker Patrik Syversen on Dawning, Deadline reports today.

The genre-bender is described as a “Scandinavian prestige drama filtered through a horror prism.”

Dawning follows “three sisters who have withdrawn to their family’s vacation home in the wake of the youngest sister’s second suicide attempt. When news reaches them that their abusive mother has passed, the two elder sisters decide not to tell the youngest to spare her the burden. Things begin to unravel when a mysterious man shows up on the property, shifting the siblings’ perspective from one of introspection and analysis to something a lot more primal.”

Starring in Dawning are Kathrine Thorborg Johansen (Power Play), Marte Magnusdotter Solem (Lovable), Thorbjørn Harr, and Steinar Klouman Hallert (Sick of Myself).

“Kieler Street” begins with the aerial shot of sleepy small rural town Slusvik, on the Norway-Sweden border. The camera pans from a bright blue sky to a pine forest, then quaint slate gray houses nestling by a network of lakes. A guitar twangs placidly over the scene, as if a song is about to start up.

Cut, somewhat violently, interrupting song and general shot, to a car’s back wheel, then its driver, a man, Jonas, telling someone, talking into the car mirror, that he’s left his wallet behind. Except that there’s no one else in the car. Jonas is obviously practicing before telling someone a lie.

That contrast – surface soporific normality versus violence, deception – runs throughout the 10-part series. And violence soon, and increasingly, begins to win out.

Written by Mette M. Bølstad (“Nobel”), “State of Happiness” follows four young characters who come from different backgrounds and are thrown into a whirlwind of opportunity during Norway’s oil boom of the 1970s.

“The Flatey Enigma,” written by Margrét Örnólfsdóttir, is a mystery thriller series based on Viktor Arnar Ingolfsson’s novels. “The Inner Circle,” penned by Håkan Lindhé, is a political thriller about an ambitious young man belonging to the Swedish political elite on a journey to fulfill his life long dream and become Prime Minister of Sweden.

There’s nothing wrong with conventional, but by the same token there’s something very wrong with a film that’s too comfortable being conventional. Prowl is the sort of horror film that desires to be nothing more than conventional. From its setup to its reliance on jump scares and an attempted twist; Prowl doesn’t have an unconventional bone in its body. There’s an ache to be vanilla that exists deep within its core, an ache that the film really wants to soothe. Atmosphere, a decent premise, and character are but three elements that Prowl sacrifices in order to be a run-of-the-mill horror film.

As per Variety, La-based Xyz Films has boarded the werewolf flick, which is co-penned by Dead Snow co-writer Stig Frode Henriksen. Cult Norwegian genre scribe-helmer Patrik Syversen (Hellfjord) will direct.

A horror film with action and comedic beats, Party Animal centers on a disillusioned young man who arranges a bachelor party for his best friend at a locked-down location. But he has to fight for his life when it turns out that the groom is a werewolf.

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

Fantastic Fest got an early treat of upcoming Norwegian cult television series Hellfjord, with the entire series screening at the Texas festival prior to the October 9th debut in Norway. And the response? Oh, yes, it was rather good. Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!

Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:

Guess it's just a centipede-y kind of day. Aubrey already showed you a new preview image from "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence." Now I've got the info on where you'll be able to see the film for the very first time: Austin's Fantastic Fest, on September 22. The deranged depravity debuts as this year's Opening Night Film.

Along with the announcement that director Tom Six's sequel to everyone's favorite ass-to-mouth horror movie will make its world premiere at the festival, Fantastic Fest also solidified the remainder of its lineup today. Hollywoodnews.com: Only the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin would try and use the words “Fantastic” and “Human Centipede” in the same sentence. Yet it’s that unique taste in spectacular genre cinema that keeps thousands flocking to Fantastic Fest in Austin each fall, and this year’s slate shouldn’t disappoint.

Tom Six’s sequel to his vile “Human Centipede” will hold its world premiere on opening night of this year’s Fantastic Fest, which runs Sept. 22-29 in Austin, Tex.

Despite my love for old-school vampires, I think the new vampire crazy starting with Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series is more than a little unhealthy for teens. The characters of Edward and Bella teach young girls that unhealthy obsession is love and that a girl is only as interesting as the men fighting over her. I didn't think it was possible to hate a vampire movie more than I hated Twilight. After seeing Prowl, however, I have to say that Bella and Edward's melodramatic nonsense is preferable to the “lessons” from Prowl.

Prowl follows a group of twenty-somethings from Smalltown Nowheresville who are trying to get their friend Amber (Courtney Hope) to Chicago by noontime tomorrow.

However, as is per the horror movie cliche, their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and the group are stranded – that is until a friendly truck driver (Payne) offers to give them a lift in the back of his semi. Prowl is one of eight films produced by After Dark Films, as part of its 2011 After Dark Originals production program. This title was recently released on DVD March 29th and the film involves six friends on a road trip to the Windy City. The trip does not go as planned and soon a hungry supernatural element is introduced, which adds both tension and mystery to a solid independent horror feature.

Other film critics have given this film a peep and Matt Withers has said of the film: "Prowl rises well above most of it's kin" Withers talks primarily about the excellent performances of the cast, but Prowl is also creative in its execution. If you have not read the plot, then your knowledge of what will happen to six twenty-somethings locked in a semi-trailer will be limited. Teenagers with a broken down van accept a ride with a truck driver who takes them to an abandon slaughterhouse instead crawling with blood thirsty monsters. 

Prowl is one of those films that has potential, but never lives up to that potential. First two thirds of the film is pretty much an extended chase sequence. The problem with this section is, they kill off way too many characters too early on. This eliminates a lot of suspense the film could have generated in who lives and who doesn't as the viewer becomes attached to characters in the film. Then a plot twist is introduced that changes the whole story up. First off, a quick round of applause to “Prowl” for being a brand new vampire flick with an attractive cast and not a single stitch lifted from a “Twilight” movie. Nope, “Prowl” may not be all that original, but at least it borrows from honest vampire movies.

Instead of teen angst pictures with blood, “Prowl” is from the “30 Days of Night” sect. As a matter of fact, this could almost have been a direct-to-dvd sequel if the right people would have gotten together before it was distributed. Instead of an After Dark Original, this well could have been “30 Days Part 3.” And while that may come off as snarky, I actually do mean it as a sort of praise.

There are four notable horror features releasing Tuesday, March 29th on DVD or Blu-Ray. The After Dark Originals are hosting two of the films, including Husk and Prowl. Another is from Canadian director Ryan Nicholson (Gutterballs), while the final entry is the second film in thirty years from production company Hammer Films - The Resident.

If you are a Blu-Ray fan, then you will be disappointed with this weeks horror selections, as only The Resident, starring Hilary Swank, is available in high definition digital. This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. "Secretary" screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson co-wrote this film, which co-stars Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Lee Pace.

Chicago – Stalled cars, prophetic visions, fresh meat in need of tenderizing, and off-handed expulsions of the dreaded line, “I’ll be right back.” These are merely a handful of the timeworn elements utilized by two new direct-to-video releases from After Dark Films. Both pictures are competently made and well acted, which makes their lack of originality all the more depressing.

Brett Simmons’s “Husk” and Patrik Syversen’s “Prowl” are billed as titles in the After Dark Originals series, the collection of horror films financed and produced solely by After Dark Films, which seems hellbent on providing even more content for FearNet OnDemand. They’re the sort of films I tend to watch during a bout of insomnia. Throw one of these diverting yet disposable flicks on the screen, and you’re guaranteed to fall asleep in no time.

(After Dark). You could end up as lunchmeat! This is the basic premise for Prowl, one of the After Dark Originals.

Chris Haberman: What attracted you to the project and/or character?

Courtney Hope: I’ve never had the opportunity to be a part of a horror film, and it was something that has always interested me. I absolutely love horror films, and I thought it was a very interesting script. I fell in love with Amber's character and how driven she was and thought it was really intriguing how we see her battle her inner and outer demons throughout the script.

Haberman: How did the shoot go overall? Do you have any fun set stories?

Hope: The shoot was crazy, but incredible. It was crammed into about 18 days, and it was very fast paced.

In our ongoing investigation into the After Dark Originals line-up, we were lucky enough to chat with Prowl director Patrik Syversen. The gent had quite a bit to say about the flick, which pits a truckload of young ‘uns against a warehouse full of blood-drinkers!

Chris Haberman: What attracted you to the project?

Patrik Syversen: I got the script and responded to the fact that it had a strong central character with a very specific conflict. In result, the horror elements are sort of a catalyst for the main character's arc. It's also a very intense survival horror with themes I could relate to, and that is the most important part. It has to be a story I feel worth telling, a story that means something to me personally. And I found that in Tim Tori's script. In addition, I've always wanted to do a creature film, and...

In cooperation with Syfy and Lionsgate, on January 28th After Dark Films is releasing eight "After Dark Originals" in theaters, in a bid to take the "horror festival concept to a higher level". If I had the holiday time left, I’d be booking a trip to España right about now. The 43rd annual Sitges kicks off on October 7th and their line up so far is impressive. Damned impressive.

In competition are Gregg Araki’s Kaboom (teaser, stills), Christopher Smith’s Black Death (review), Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports (trailer), Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber (clip) and Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins among many others. We've been following Norwegian director Patrik Syversen in these pages for quite some time now. In 2008 Syversen was at the leading edge of the current wave of Scandinavian genre film with his indie slasher Rovdyr - released here as Manhunt - and has since relocated temporarily to the Us to direct the After Dark film Prowl. Well, Syversen was a busy man while on these shores, connecting with fellow expat Marie Kristiansen to shoot something entirely different - the indie drama Exteriors.

Manhunt and Prowl director Patrik Syversen and Artist Marie Kristiansen have directed and produced a new feature in Hollywood.

The two La based directors met through mutual friends in La, and were inspired by the many out of work people with dreams of making it big. Together, they decided to document and dramatize their experiences.
