I don’t think I could ever imagine living in a world like the one we’re confronted with in Netflix’s Korean drama, Trigger. While we’ve seen violence play out often (I could even say more than often) in Korean media, it has almost never been with guns. Korea’s always been strictly anti-gun, but this new drama imagines a scenario where free access to guns is given to all residents, never mind their age, gender, nationality, or occupation. Terrifying, I know. But it’s not just the visual of Koreans getting massacred in school for bullying that is absolutely bizarre and jarring; it’s the way the story plays out, too. The 10-episode drama certainly comes across as a dystopian nightmare where everyone has a “trigger.” Something that pushes you to do the worst thing on your mind. Despite having one main plot, the series follows an anthological template,...

What happens when an object of immense power is introduced into an environment that has no context for it? Trigger poses this question with unnerving focus. The series opens in a South Korea we recognize—a society of immense pressure and ambition—but drops a foreign element into its heart: an influx of illegal guns.
In a nation with virtually no gun crime, these weapons find their way into the hands of ordinary, stressed-out people. This is not a straightforward action series. It is a slow-motion study of a social fabric tearing apart. The show’s title cleverly points to the mechanical function of a firearm and, more importantly, to the psychological breaking point within every person.
A Society on the Verge

In the first moments of Trigger, a billboard announces that South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world, largely because of a ban on firearms. Why, then, are military-grade automatic weapons being couriered to unsuspecting Korean citizens, who, in turn, take their unhappiness out on others? When a kind police officer with a traumatic past begins investigating these seemingly random violent crimes, he crosses paths with an overeager citizen sleuth who sheds light on a greater societal evil at play.

There are few American archetypes that are more enduring and iconic than that of cowboys in the Wild West. From pulp paperback novels to the silver screen, Westerns have been thrilling audiences worldwide for over a century, with that distinction also spreading to television shows. Westerns once dominated the television airwaves in the United States, with some of the longest-running shows in the medium's history coming from the genre. As a testament to their timeless appeal, Westerns have seen a resurgence of popularity recently.
As their ubiquity solidified, Westerns have expanded beyond their usual American Southwest period piece setting with grounded stakes. The genre has proven flexible enough to incorporate different global environments, time periods, even lacing in elements of the supernatural and science fiction. What are constants within the genre are people standing up in largely lawless and remote areas to defend themselves from those that would openly exploit them.

As South Korean television programming, or K-dramas, continues to find success with audiences worldwide, one overlooked gem is "Song of the Bandits." A Netflix original series, "Song of the Bandits" is a period piece Western set in the 1920s during the brutal Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula. While not as popular as other K-dramas available to stream on Netflix, "Song of the Bandits" deserves its place among the best K-dramas on the platform. Moreover, "Song of the Bandits" is a fantastic Western in a region and culture not typically associated with the genre.
Incorporating actual history into its narrative, "Song of the Bandits" takes place primarily in the Gando region of China, near the Korean border. In the face of the oppressive Japanese control over Korea, many Korean refugees fled to Gando, including resistance fighters looking to liberate the peninsula from the Japanese. With the sudden influx of refugees,...

I should start by declaring I’m no fan of “disaster movies,” which usually play out as melodramas, rather than thrillers. They always start with introductions to an assortment of strangers about to find themselves in a shared peril. That is intended to personalize the macrocosm of the threat, so we’ll care about the potential victims – root for some, hate some others – theoretically making “who will survive?” a grabber, regardless of the nature of their common menace. When you put them in a confined space – like an airplane or ship at sea – claustrophobia adds another dimension to the emotional strings being tugged.
So my praise for this subtitled Korean thriller, Emergency Declaration, which runs contrary to form, making it more of an achievement by the producers. A weird guy who we soon learn is a disgraced biologist boards...

As described at the start of Jae-rim Han’s disaster film in the sky, everything is supposed to stop the moment a pilot initiates an Emergency Declaration. It alone lets everyone involved know that the plane is in real danger of crashing. Other aircraft are instantly diverted into circling patterns, the nearest runway is cleared for landing, and it becomes all-hands-on-deck to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. And the general populace condones those measures—they don’t know when they might be on the next flight in desperate need of a runaway. Since the protocol is mainly drawn for piloting issues, depleting fuel, or malfunctions that make time of the essence, however, things get much more complicated if the plane becomes a threat itself.

"Take me with you..." Dark Sky Films has released an official US trailer for the Korean horror thriller The Closet, directed by Kwang-bin Kim. This already opened in South Korea in February this year, and arrives in the US to watch this fall. After Sang-Won's daughter Yi-Na goes missing in their new home, a mysterious man approaches him and tells him to look for her in the closet. The film is about a man who grows apart from his daughter following the death of his wife, and a mysterious exorcist who helps the man find his missing daughter. The supernatural film stars Jung-woo Ha, Yool Heo, Nam-gil Kim, and Si-ah Kim. The looks like it's borrowing some horror concepts from Poltergeist and Insidious and working them into a story of a grieving father. However, I don't know why this trailer is dubbed in English - very strange choice. Here's the...

Host Anita Sarkeesian walks us through these examples while laying out in simple terms just why such images are so harmful:
“One of the most insidious tools of white supremacy is its insistence on whiteness as the racial default or as an ethnic ’empty’ category. White people manage to exist in a kind of invisible zone, where they are assumed to not have a race or ethnicity. This allows whiteness to wear the cultural, religious, or social signifiers of other ethnic communities, as if they were merely accessories to be purchased at the mall.
