[This story contains spoilers from Surface season two, including the finale “Unearthed.”]
By the end of season two of Apple TV+’s Surface, Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Sophie Ellis finally has evidence connecting the Huntley family to her mother’s death, but, in typical Surface fashion, there’s one more twist as she’s ready to present this information to the police.
It turns out there are warrants out for Sophie’s arrest from the time when she was going by the alias of Tess Caldwell. Any discovery of what these warrants are for and how this new information about Sophie’s past could affect her future will have to wait for a potential third season of Surface. Apple TV+ has not yet renewed the thriller, which premiered its eight-episode second season on Feb. 21 before releasing the season finale on April 11.
But star and executive producer Mbatha-Raw has already talked with showrunner Veronica West “a little bit” about where the story could go,...

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for the entirety of Surface Season 2.
Following his famous footballer role of Jamie Tartt on Apple TV+’s breakout comedy Ted Lasso created by Bill Lawrence and Jason Sudeikis, actor Phil Dunster brought a different role to life in Season 2 of the streamer’s drama series Surface, created by Veronica West and produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.
Dunster’s Quinn Huntley emerged as a compelling character in the second season of the show, which constantly turned any attempted perception of its main character Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who sometimes goes by an alter ego Tess Caldwell, on its head, challenging everything viewers think they know about her as well as those closest to her like her husband James (Oliver Jackson Cohen) and her estranged childhood best friend Eliza Huntley (Millie Brady), Quinn’s sister.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Surface Season 2 finale “Unearthed.”] It’s time for Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) — and the audience — to hopefully find out more about another part of her life, should Surface return for a third season. The second ended with Sophie bringing news of where her mother’s body is buried — on the estate of the powerful Huntley family, after the wife of Sophie’s biological father shot her — to the police, after her former friend and (surprise this season!) sister Eliza (Millie Brady) realized. But the police told her there are warrants out for her arrest (under the alias Tess Caldwell), a shock to Sophie. Elsewhere in the finale, Quinn Huntley (Phil Dunster) and Grace (Freida Pinto) did get married, despite some of the questions she had about his family, and journalist Callum (Gavin Drea) chose to help Sophie and James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) escape the cops. Below, executive producers Veronica West and Lauren Neustadter...

The first season of Surface was met with mixed reviews as the Apple TV+ thriller tried to use a unique amnesia storyline to evoke a psychological twist reminiscent of films like The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl. Led by a stellar performance from Gugu Mbatha-Raw alongside Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the 2022 first season of Surface ended with a cliffhanger teasing a major shift for the second chapter in the story. Now, Surface is back with a vastly improved sophomore run that introduces an all-new cast of supporting players as the action moves from San Francisco to London.
Surface follows Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a woman suffering from amnesia after a suicide attempt. Trying to piece together her past and face suspicions about her husband, James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), Sophie finds herself uncovering a complex web of lies that include details about her past. This season finds Sophie in London, living under her real name Tess Caldwell.

Surface is back, doubling down on all the gaslighting, unreliable narration, repressed trauma, and secret identities we’ve come to know and love. It remains more of a guilty pleasure than a taut psychological thriller. However, the series is elevated by its star, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is sensational here for the second consecutive season.
Produced by Reese Witherspoon, Surface thrives on Mbatha-Raw’s mesmerizing performance, allowing the audience to overlook the show’s weaknesses and give in to the irresistible distraction this Apple TV+ series is designed to be. A streaming soap opera that is addictive due to its bingeable format, glossy production, and high-stakes twists and turns.
It may not be high-brow, but this Veronica West creation gets the job done.

Season 2 of The Recruit has been much better than the first. While Season 1 only had a 68% Tomatometer score, the second chapter came in strong with 91%, making it one of the best-reviewed seasons of any spy show. This is hardly surprising, considering the stakes are way higher this time. In his second outing, CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) finds himself in Seoul, where he has to help South Korea's National Intelligence Service (Nis) agent, Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), deal with a Yakuza problem. The entire saga is linked to a cryptocurrency jointly developed by the CIA and Nis.

In the trailer for the second season of Apple TV+’s psychological thriller Surface, Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Sophie is still looking to uncover the truth about her past, this time in London.
After season one ended with Sophie embracing her former identity as Tess Caldwell and going back to the U.K. in search of Millie Brady’s Eliza, whose bloody face has been haunting Sophie, the season two trailer finds Sophie still across the pond and having reconnected with Eliza’s posh British family, the Huntleys.
Eliza is shown recalling how Sophie, whom she knows as Tess, used to work at their family’s stables and the two were friends before Tess disappeared.
But Sophie’s not just seeking to reunite with old acquaintances. She’s overheard saying that her mother was murdered when she was very young and that she thinks the Huntleys were involved in her death.

Created by Veronica West (High Fidelity) and produced by Apple Studios and Hello Sunshine, Surface follows Sophie (Mbatha-Raw), a woman who has extreme memory loss after a traumatic head injury. In the first season, set in San Francisco, Sophie seeks to rediscover herself, unearthing sins ranging from an affair to much deeper questions about a hidden past and her true identity.

With the show having already only lasted one season, Zoë Kravitz reveals that High Fidelity producers thought her character to be too toxic. The Hulu series acted as a second adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel of the same name, following John Cusack's 2000 romantic dramedy movie, about a record store owner named Rob who struggles to get a handle on the world of relationships, lamenting the inability to maintain any one partner for too long. Developed by Ugly Betty alums Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, High Fidelity scored largely favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike, though one key group weren't as sold on the show.
In a recent cover story with GQ, Zoë Kravitz reflected on her time with the short-lived High Fidelity series. When looking on the development of her central character, Rob, the star recalled how producers thought her to be too toxic and angry of...

[The following story contains spoilers from the first season of Apple TV+’s Surface, including the season one finale, “See You on the Other Side.”]
The first season of Apple TV+’s Surface ends on a cliffhanger, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s main character, Sophie, embracing her past identity as Tess Caldwell and going back to the U.K. in search of Millie Brady’s Eliza, whose bloody face has been haunting Sophie.
While Apple has yet to renew the psychological thriller, showrunner Veronica West says as she was thinking of an ending for season one, she wanted to find a way for the show to move forward.
“There needed to be at least one more chapter to Sophie’s past, and that’s why at the end of the pilot you hear the name Tess for the first time and these memories of Millie Brady’s character continue to surface up, and the reason they do is because that was one of the most traumatic things that happened to Sophie,...

Heading into the season finale of Apple TV+’s mystery-thriller Surface, so many questions remain: Who is Sophie, really? Why did she jump off of that boat? What are her true motivations? Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until a potential Season 2 before we get closer to anything concrete.
But here’s what we do know following the finale (which is now available to stream). James didn’t have anything to do with Baden’s death. That horrific honor goes to the slimy Harrison, who didn’t want Baden’s work to undermine or destroy their beloved firm.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “See You on the Other Side,” the Season 1 finale of “Surface,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
What began with a leap ended with a cliffhanger as Apple TV+’s “Surface” closed out its first season with some good old-fashioned revenge and an enticing tease of the future.
After a season spent piecing together her lost memories after an apparent attempt at suicide by throwing herself off a ship, Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) learned she’d never actually intended to kill herself. It was all a calculated ruse to escape back to her old life as Tess Caldwell, a mysterious woman with a past she’s only remembered in bloody flashes.
After discovering she had stolen money from her husband’s firm, and left herself a go-bag in a storage locker that was packed for a return trip to her native London,...

[The following story contains spoilers from the sixth episode of Surface‘s first season, “The Myth of California.”]
From the beginning of Apple TV+’s psychological thriller Surface, Oliver Jackson-Cohen’s James has viewed his wife’s near-death experience as a chance for the two of them to get a second chance at their relationship and move beyond their past mistakes.
But with Sophie’s (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) realization at the end of episode five that she was the one James was covering for with the missing money he was trying to recover and that she could be the bad guy, Sophie and James’ fresh start is over.
“That kind of opens the floodgates for James to realize there’s no more hiding behind an idealized version,” showrunner Veronica West tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s no second chance — that’s a fairytale.”
With that discovery, episode six breaks open what viewers think they...
