Eurovision Drama and ‘The Nameless’: Movistar Plus+ Exec Touts Focus on Event Programming
Image
Ambition, emotion and event programming — those are some of the key factors that Spanish pay-tv and streaming giant Movistar Plus+ is looking for in its originals, including its Eurovision Song Contest drama miniseries La Canción (The Song).

Susana Herreras, manager of original fiction content production at the company, which is part of Telefónica, touted several examples of such content at the Conecta Fiction & Entertainment industry gathering in Cuenca, Spain, on Tuesday.

She showed a teaser for the recent series La Canción, which tells the story of how Spain under General Franco in 1968 upset the U.K. frontrunner Cliff Richard and his “Congratulations” to win the Eurovision Song Contest with Massiel’s “La la la.” Created by Pepe Coira and Fran Araújo, and directed by Alejandro Marín, the series stars Carolina Yuste, Patrick Criado, Àlex Brendemühl, and Marcel Borràs. Movistar Plus+ Internacional is distributing the show outside of Spain.

Herreras also...

Pedro Almodóvar Begins Shooting Bitter Christmas for 2026 Release
Image
Less than a year since his first English-language feature premiered, Pedro Almodóvar has already embarked on his next project. Bitter Christmas (translated from Amarga Navidad) is now shooting in Madrid and Lanzarote throughout the summer, with a cast including Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit, and Quim Gutiérrez.

Variety reports the film will premiere in 2026 in Spain, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures Spain, followed by a streaming release on Movistar Plus+. We imagine it’s no time at all before Sony Pictures Classics announces its U.S. acquisition. With Almodóvar usually having a speedy post-production, one wonders if we could see a release around the holidays early next year or if he’ll hold out for a major festival debut.

Here’s the synopsis, translated from Spanish: “Elsa is an advertising director whose mother dies during a long December holiday weekend. She throws herself...

Image
Pedro Almodóvar has found his next project. The auteur is now at work on “Bitter Christmas” for Spanish streaming platform Movistar Plus+. Almodóvar also collaborated with the platform on his English-language feature debut, “The Room Next Door.”

“Bitter Christmas,” or “Amarga Navidad,” stars a slew of Almodóvar newcomers and staples, including Bárbara Lennie (“Petra”), Leonardo Sbaraglia (“Pain and Glory”), Aitana Sánchez-Gijón (“Parallel Mothers”), Victoria Luengo (“The Room Next Door”), Patrick Criado (“Riot Police”), Milena Smit (“Parallel Mothers”), and Quim Gutiérrez (“Darkbluealmostblack”). The film will be released in Spanish theaters in 2026, with Warner Bros. Pictures Spain distributing. It will then debut exclusively on the Movistar Plus+ platform.

IndieWire has reached out to Almodóvar’s representatives for details about a possible U.S. release, though it can be assumed Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in North America, as it has all of Almodóvar’s recent outings. We’re told that festival play and a U.

Spain’s Stunning 1968 Eurovision Win Revisited in ‘La Canción,’ From ‘Hierro,’ ‘Rapa’s’ Pepe Coira and Fran Araujo
Image
From the 1950s, as foreign tourists poured onto its beaches, Spain lobbied hard to join the European Economic Community, presenting itself as a modern country, despite its rule by an arcane 1930s dictator. By 1968, targeted reform notwithstanding, the only part of Europe Spain had entered was the Eurovision Song Contest, and it hadn’t even won that either.

Based often exactly on historical facts and real-life figures, “La Canción,” a Movistar Plus+, Buendía Estudios three-part miniseries world premieres at this week’s Malaga Film Festival, distributed outside Spain by Movistar Plus+ Internacional.

It begins with ageing dictator Francisco Franco entrusting minister Manuel Fraga with the task of winning the Eurovision Song Contest, which Fraga delegates to Spanish pubcaster Tve.

Incredibly for some, they succeed, Massiel, a flamboyant pro-Fidel Castro Spanish singer who has no time for Franco, delivers a powerful performance of “La la la,” beating Cliff Richard’s...

Bird Box Barcelona Review: A Compelling, Thrilling, Frightening Horror Spinoff
Image
Screenwriting and directing duo Álex Pastor and David Pastor face the enormous task of crafting a story that is as engaging, thrilling, and unique as Bird Box without relying on the same themes and plotting. Bird Box Barcelona suffers from the reality that the creatures cannot truly be revealed, as the premise thrives on the characters and audiences not knowing what they are. This may lead to repetitive actions and scenarios, requiring creativity on the part of the filmmakers. However, the franchise can’t continue without feeling redundant or evolving to the next step, figuring out how to defeat these beings or developing a cure. Both of these possibilities are hinted at in Bird Box Barcelona, but they're not fully explored. The Pastors work on this by honing in on personal narratives and teasing the possibility that humans can resist and defeat these creatures. The allure of the unknown is still very much intact,...

Full Official Trailer for 'Bird Box Barcelona' Spin-Off with Mario Casas
Image
"There are worse things than the creatures." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for the Bird Box Barcelona movie (also known as Blindly in Spanish). It will be available to watch in just a few more weeks. The Netflix Spain production tells another story within the same post-apocalyptic people-go-kill-themselves universe as the first Bird Box in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world's population by causing all who "see" it to suddenly take their lives, Sebastian and his daughter Anna must navigate their journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than unseen creatures grows. This stars Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Diego Calva Hernández, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia. Really looks like this'll be much better than the original film.

Image
The second teaser trailer for Netflix’s Bird Box spinoff, Bird Box Barcelona, reveals much more of the terror the citizens of Barcelona are feeling as the creatures launch their attack. Bird Box starring Oscar winner Sandra Bullock premiered in December 2018, and the spinoff will debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023. Goya award winner Mario Casas (No matarás) leads the cast of the spinoff, starring Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, and Patrick Criado.

In addition, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia also star.

Álex Pastor and David Pastor penned the screenplay and co-directed. Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis produced the post-apocalyptic thriller.

Bird Box Barcelona Trailer: Bust Out Your Blindfolds! We're Going Bird Boxing Again, Baby!
Image
Five years after the original "Bird Box" became an absolute sensation on Netflix, we're finally getting a follow-up. While it's not a proper sequel, it is more of a spin-off taking place elsewhere in the world. In this case, Spain, which is why the forthcoming movie is aptly titled "Bird Box Barcelona." That also has a nice alliterative ring to it. But that's about the only thing about this movie that looks nice, as it seems absolutely chaotic and tense.

This appears to be going with a very similar conceit as the original film, with survivors trying to avoid eye contact with the mysterious beings at the center of this disaster at all costs. It's a new group of people in an entirely new location. What will those new elements bring to the table? Let's have a look-see.

Bird Box Spinoff Trailer Introduces Evolved Monsters
Image
Netflix has released an official teaser trailer for Bird Box Barcelona, an upcoming spinoff set in the same universe as the 2018 film.

"Those things, they take our fears, and they twist them," explains Georgina Campbell's undisclosed character in the opening moments of the Netflix teaser. The upcoming Spanish-language spinoff takes the terror and action from the original film and places it thousands of miles away in Spain. Similar to the 2018 film, which starred Sandra Bullock, Barcelona follows a family as they try and survive while avoiding visual contact with the mysterious creatures that are causing mass suicides across the globe. However, according to an unseen individual in the trailer, the monsters are evolving, suggesting that the protagonists in the upcoming spinoff may be in for a tough road ahead.

Entertainment Weekly has debuted a brand new teaser trailer this morning, while also confirming that Bird Box Barcelona is not a prequel. Rather, the events of the film are unfolding at the very same time as the original Bird Box movie… in a very different part of the world.

Bird Box Barcelona Trailer: Netflix's Horror Franchise Is Going International
Image
In today's news of slightly unnecessary projects, Netflix is reviving its hit original film "Bird Box" with a sequel-extension film called "Bird Box Barcelona." You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.

Netflix debuted a one-minute teaser trailer for the new film — which was announced back in March 2021 — and it gives us a glimpse into a similar event as the 2018 film, only in Europe this time. There is chaos in major cities, and folks turn to obscuring their sight in the outside world in order to obtain shelter. Again, it's very much a global repositioning of the events of the first film, however, it does seem like this new story will have some of its own twists and turns.

According to the streamer, the new film is an "expansion...

‘Nights in Tefía’ Delivers an Eye-Opening Account of Spain’s Gulags Under Franco
Image
The best received of Spanish series at last month’s Málaga Festival, “Nights in Tefía” (“Las Noches de Tefía”) hit the festival with already strong buzz. The latest from Spain’s Buendía Estudios and SVOD service Atresplayer Premium whose titles also include “Veneno” and “Cardo,” “Nights in Tefía” proved a critics’ favourite. Written and directed by Miguel del Arco, a distinguished Spanish playwright and theater director, it turns on Airam Betancor who, living in Tenerife in 2004, recognises an old man shuffling down the street: Robles.

He’s the same man who, 42 years before, as a prison guard at the euphemistically named Tefía Penitentiary Agricultural Colony on Fuerteventura, another Canary Island, had beaten and tortured Airam as a teen inmate of the Francoist labor camp designed as a dumping ground for undesirables, from political dissidents to the socially unruly and homosexuals.

The sight of Robles, who has moved into Airam’s...

Money Heist: What to Watch Next
La casa de papel (2017)
So you’ve finished “A Family Tradition” – the concluding episode of Netflix’s global blockbuster series Money Heist. It’s like finally getting off the wildest rollercoaster ride ever, right? So many twists and turns, so many powerful scenes that put our hearts in our throats, so many feels…and now it’s over.

From the very start, no one knew where this show was going to go. The original Spanish TV series La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper) would have disappeared into obscurity when it was cancelled had not Netflix picked it up. But there, the gang stole the hearts of the world, was one of Netflix’s most popular foreign language titles, and became an international symbol for resistance movements. Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) said it best in her ultimate narration, “When this story began, nobody could’ve imagined…”

The final fifth season was broken into two...
