She’s had films at Tribeca before, but she’s chatting with us this week from Chicago where she’s on stage in “Another Marriage” at the Steppenwolf. She’s candid, funny and has real affection for the new director. And she says it’s never too early to think about awards season. But we begin with her downtown New York professional roots.

Judy Greer: I was actually at the first Tribeca Film Festival. I was shooting a movie in New York at the time. They were all finished cleaning up the wreckage after 9/11 in downtown...

Michiel Husiman On Echo 3's Explosive Stunts, Emotional Finale & Season 2 Plans

It's a race against time — and plenty of governmental red tape — to save a loved one in Echo 3. The series revolves around two decorated military special operatives, brothers-in-law Prince and Bambi, who are stopping at nothing to rescue Amber from the grips of a drug cartel down in Colombia, even as dark secrets about the three of them come to the surface.

Luke Evans, Michiel Huisman, and Jessica Ann Collins lead the ensemble cast of Echo 3 alongside Elizabeth Anweis, James Udom, Maria Del Rosario, Bradley Whitford, and Martina Gusmán. Created by two-time Oscar winner Mark Boal, the series is a gripping exploration of why men go to war, the effects it has on their psyches and personal relationships, and how love isn't always as strong as it should be.

Image
Mark Boal has focused much of his energy as a screenwriter on interpreting the geopolitical dramas of our times in the Middle East and Central Asia. For his new Apple TV+ series “Echo 3,” the two-time Oscar winner who wrote and produced 2008’s “The Hurt Locker” and 2011’s “Zero Dark Thirty” has turned his gaze to the United States’ neighbors to the south.

The drama series, adapted from the 2018 Israeli series “When Heroes Fly,” revolves around a kidnapping of an American research scientist (played by Jessica Ann Collins) near the Colombia-Venezuela border and the rescue effort that ensues, led by her brother (Luke Evans) and new husband (Michiel Huisman) — both of whom work for a U.S. Army elite combat unit, aka special forces. “Echo 3” bowed Nov. 23 with three episodes, followed by weekly installments premiering on Fridays through the Season 1 finale on Jan. 13.

“Echo 3” marks Boal’s first series production — and it was a doozy,...

Unfortunately, they know the net is closing, and their window to save Amber is closing.

They turn their attention to the sibling of someone associated with the people holding Amber captive, forcing them to question how far they will go to save her.

‘Echo 3’ Star Michiel Huisman on Playing a ‘Control Freak’ Soldier, Working With Mark Boal — and What People Recognize Him From
Image
In Apple TV+’s “Echo 3,” created by Oscar-winner Mark Boal, Michiel Huisman — of “The Flight Attendant,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Game of Thrones” and much more — plays Prince, an elite soldier whose wife, Amber (Jessica Ann Collins), has been kidnapped in Colombia. With her brother, Bambi (Luke Evans), a fellow Special Forces member and Prince’s estranged best friend, he goes on a mission to free her without, he hopes, causing an international incident.

How did the role of Prince come to you?

For a while after “The Flight Attendant,” we were looking for a project that would feel like another step up. This character is very different from anything I’d ever played before. And it would really allow me to flex my acting muscles, so to speak. So I had to fight a bit to land the role.

Why did you have to fight?

Oh my God!

Roush Review: Familiar Rescue Thrills in ‘Echo 3’
Jeremy Renner in Démineurs (2008)
“This isn’t Jason Bourne,” the kidnap victim tells her overzealous South American rebel captors. It’s an understandable assumption, considering how many echoes of past thrillers resonate throughout Echo 3. What this Apple TV+ action series, from Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker writer Mark Boal, may lack in originality it more than compensates for with its grim intensity. The action begins when newlywed scientist Amber (Jessica Ann Collins) is abducted by revolutionaries in Colombia while studying plant life to find new cures for addiction. The guerrillas think she’s up to more than research when a sophisticated tracking device is found buried in her backpack. (Credit: Apple TV+) They’re partly right but also on the wrong track. And as in many a kidnap story, they’re chosen the wrong hostage to toy with. Amber, who’s hiding a few significant secrets, is tougher than she looks, and the loved ones...

‘Echo 3’ Review: Mark Boal’s Apple TV+ Drama Blends Action and Artiness
Image
Click here to read the full article.

If the apparent success of Amazon’s The Terminal List proved anything, it’s that there’s an audience out there for fast-moving militaristic revenge stories with more interest in a steadily escalating body count than anything deeper.

Mark Boal’s new Apple TV+ drama Echo 3 will put to the test whether viewers are willing to stick with their militaristic revenge stories if they come packaged with some nuance and characterization. Based on the Israeli format When Heroes Fly, Echo 3 has all the fetishistic shots of weapons and arbitrarily featured American flags one could ever want, and the body count rises steadily. But those things are accompanied by artier touches, whether it’s blades of grass swaying in the wind, attempts to delve superficially into the political realities of contemporary South America or just action scenes that unfold with a deliberate — right on the edge of “slow” — pace.

Echo 3 TV Review
Image
Plot: When brilliant scientist Amber Chesborough vanishes along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband—both elite U.S. Army commandos—struggle to find her amid a guerilla war, discovering that the woman they love might have a secret.

Review: Mark Boal has made a career out of telling military stories. From those grounded in true stories (Zero Dark Thirty) to those inspired by reality (The Hurt Locker), Boal has also transitioned to action-oriented blockbusters like Triple Frontier. His latest project is Echo 3, an international espionage thriller full of gritty action and military tactics that attempts to tell a sociopolitical drama full of heavy stuntwork and complicated storytelling. Despite some truly pulse-pounding firefights that rival any of his big-screen efforts, Mark Boal’s characters cannot rise to the same level of complexity as the action sequences. Echo 3 is decent but far from as good as it should, or could, be.

First Trailer for Intense South American Rescue Thriller Series 'Echo 3'
Image
"How many lives are you willing to trade for your sister?" Apple has revealed an official trailer for a rescue thriller mini-series titled Echo 3, arriving for streaming this November on Apple TV+. Echo 3 is an "action-packed" series about a brilliant scientist kidnapped in Colombia, and her brother and husband who will stop at nothing to find her and bring her home. When Amber Chesborough goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, these men with extensive military experience struggle to find her against the backdrop of a secret war. Echo 3 features Jessica Ann Collins as Amber, Luke Evans as Bambi (her brother), and Michiel Huisman as Prince (her husband), along with Martina Gusman, James Udom, Maria Del Rosario, Alejandro Furth, Juan Pablo Raba, and special guest star, Bradley Whitford. While this is supposed to be a wholesome, riveting story about saving family members, it's clearly a jingoistic reminder of America's imperialism and military attitude.

‘Acapulco’ Review: Apple TV+ Comedy Set at an ’80s Mexican Resort Is Impossibly Charming

Technically, “Acapulco” starts at the end. On a sunny, cloudless afternoon in Southern California, Maximo Gallardo (Eugenio Derbez) takes in his view of the Pacific from a sprawling estate. On a day off from his life as a financial mogul, Maximo welcomes his nephew Hugo (Raphael Alejandro) for a relaxing kickback. In celebrating his young relative’s birthday, Maximo regales him with the tale of his own teenage days, working at the luxury Las Colinas resort in Acapulco, Mexico.

As the show judiciously cuts back and forth between present-day and 1984, Maximo slowly introduces his younger self (Enrique Arrizon) amidst a sea of family members and coworkers. Childhood friend Memo (Fernando Carsa) helps him navigate life at Las Colinas, as he pines after hopeless crush Julia (Camila Perez), contends with rivals Hector (Rafael Cebrián) and Chad (Chord Overstreet), and does his best to impress the resort’s manager (Damián Alcázar) and...
