Netflix's New Disaster Thriller Series Joins a Prestigious Netflix List
Image
December was a great year for Netflix, as it premiered many popular titles. Among them, it was a disaster miniseries that became a huge streaming success.

The polarizing miniseries La Palma debuted on the platform on Dec. 12. Only five weeks later, after enjoying several weeks in Netflix's Top 10, La Palma joined a prestigious list: the Top 10 Most Popular Non-English Shows. The series is currently in eighth place. This comes after the Norwegian miniseries was the fifth most-watched series between the week of Dec. 19 and Dec. 25 on all streaming platforms.

Netflix's Polarizing New Disaster Series Is a Streaming Success

Netflix’s La Palma is trending on a new TV ratings chart, despite having a less-than-stellar 28% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Norwegian disaster drama reached fifth place the week of Dec. 19 through Dec. 25, 2024, on Reelgood, which tracks audience interest, per Screen Rant.

Reelgood’s top five list also includes: Paramount+’s Dexter: Original Sin, Apple TV+’s Shrinking, and The Agency from Showtime. The top spot for the week of Dec. 19 to 25 went to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

New Netflix Disaster Show Climbs Streaming Chart Despite 29% Audience Score
Image
Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

Netflix Disaster Series 'La Palma' Takes the #1 Spot Despite Audience Reactions
Image
An unexpected (and now largely panned) TV series has exploded into the #1 spot on Netflix’s top 10. The limited series, which was released earlier this month with little fanfare, is titled La Palma and follows a Norwegian family who, while vacationing on the titular island, suddenly find themselves fighting for survival amid a natural disaster. La Palma has taken the streaming platform by storm, beating out the likes of Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano’s dark comedy series No Good Deed, Jamie Foxx’s stand-up special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was..., and the critical hit spy thriller series Black Doves.

Created by Martin Sundland, Lars Gudmestad, and Harald Rosenløw-Eeg, La Palma stars Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Cold Prey), Anders Baasmo (Welcome to Norway), Alma Günther (Another Happy Christmas), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Thea Sofie Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom), and is only four episodes long, making it perfect for binge-watching.

Unlike the cliché Hollywood films, this one does talk about the consequences of a natural disaster and in detail takes its audiences through what happens right before calamity strikes. Legend Of Hercules Vs The Rock’s Hercules: Which 2014 Movie Was Better?
Image
The 2014 movies The Legend of Hercules and Hercules both offer different stories about the iconic hero and his legendary battles. Both films had impressive casts, but the selective cast of Hercules helps shape an intriguing story about connection and fighting for what is right. While both films have their strengths, Dwayne Johnson's Hercules proves to be the stronger movie in portraying the strengths and weaknesses of the legendary warrior.

Renny Harlin's The Legend of Hercules and Brett Ratner's Hercules were two movies about the legendary hero released in 2014, but only one can be considered a real tribute to the warrior's story. The Legend of Hercules was a 3D fantasy film that depicts the early life of Alcides (Kellan Lutz) in Ancient Greece, as the son of King Amphitryon. After being unwillingly sold into slavery in Egypt, he learns of his true destiny and must rise to become Hercules.

Geopolitical Thriller ‘The Seed’ Tackles Big Business With Genre Intrigue
Image
Winner of the audience award and prize for best creation at this year’s Monte-Carlo Television Festival, six-part drama “The Seed” mixes Scandi-noir, ecological concerns and corridors-of-power intrigue into a tense geopolitical thriller that turns around the most elemental of concerns.

“Beneath all the thriller convention we explore this question of who feeds the world,” says show creator Christian Jeltsch. “Because whoever feeds the world has a hold on political power, and today only three companies supply us all.”

The seeds (ahem) of the idea were planted years ago, when Jeltsch read about mercenaries destroying a seed vault in Aleppo and connected the idea to the very real Svalbard Global Seed Vault just off the North Pole. The wheels began turning, the seeds took to sprouting, and soon the show-writer had a narrative full of international intrigue that begins when a young German activist goes missing on the Norwegian northern archipelago.

Slasher Series ‘Cold Prey’ is Norway’s Answer to ‘Halloween’ and ‘Friday the 13th’ [Horrors Elsewhere]
Image
The characters in the Norwegian slasher franchise Cold Prey may be accustomed to harsh and wintry climates, but they’re not prepared for a pickaxe-wielding killer with almost superhuman stamina. The first stab in this successful trilogy made its way into theaters in 2006, on a Friday the 13th, no less. Five characters go on a ski trip in Jotunheimen, and when someone gets injured, they find shelter at the abandoned ski lodge on the mountain. As they wait for help to come, the group slowly realizes the place isn’t so empty after all. A serial killer inhabits the old hotel with a long and dark history. This ruthless and stoic assailant, referred to as the Mountain Man, then proceeds to butcher his unwelcome guests.

Slasher movies are typically associated with hot weather. Thoughts of summer camps, sweaty small towns, and warm woods enter one’s head when talking about this popular subgenre.

Norwegian Sci-Fi Comedy 'Blasted' Trailer About a Laser Tag Duo
Axel Gehrken Bøyum and Odin Waage as Philip and Henning
"It's a full-on alien invasion!" Netflix has revealed the trailer for Blasted, a sci-fi comedy from Norway that seems to have a bit of an Attack the Block vibe. This looks ridiculously fun. When a former childhood friend crashes Sebastian's bachelor party and makes it all about himself, only an alien invasion can make them put aside their bad blood and reunite as the kick-ass laser-tag duo they once were. This sci-fi comedy is inspired by the Norwegian UFO phenomenon. To defeat the aliens they need to rekindle their relationship to save everyone. And get back to being the kick-ass lasertag duo they once were. There's also some fun paintball in this, too! Blasted stars Axel Bøyum & Fredrik Skogsrud, with Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, André Sørum, Evelyn Rasmussen Osazuwa, Mathias Luppichini, and Eirik Hallert. As someone who was a huge laser tag fan growing up, I totally need to see this!

Leonine Studios Boards European Thriller Series ‘The Seed’ From Writer Christian Jeltsch For Germany’s Ard Degeto & Norway’s Nrk
Image
Exclusive: Leonine Studios has taken worldwide rights to German-Norwegian thriller series The Seed (working title), which is set around the explosive takeover of a seed company and comes from Chameleon writer Christian Jeltsch.

The Germany-based producer-distributor joins its subsidiary Odeon Fiction, alongside co-commissioners German broadcaster Ard Degeto and Norway’s Nrk and Czech producer Mia Film on the production, which began shooting on May 10 at spectacular original locations in Spitsbergen (Norway), Munich (Germany) and Prague (Czech Republic). The service producer in Spitsbergen is PolarX As.

Jeltsch, who is writing upcoming Sky Deutschland corporate lobbying mystery drama Chameleon and works on Ard procedural Tatort, is creator and head writer of the English-language series. He wrote the screenplays with Axel Hellstenius and Alexander Dierbach (Line of Separation) is directing.

Westworld‘s Ingrid Bolsø Berdal Heino Ferch stars opposite Heino Ferch.

The drama uses the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen as the backdrop to the six-part thriller. The vault acts as an insurance policy and backup facility for crops globally by providing storage for seed duplicates storied in gene banks around the world.

The Seed follows German detective Max (Ferch) and Norwegian policewoman Thea (Bolsø Berdal), who set out to find Max’s missing nephew Victor (Jonathan Berlin) in Spitsbergen. It soon becomes apparent his disappearance may be connected to the takeover of a seed company that is causing controversy in Brussels. As they plunge deeper into webs of intrigue and political interests they find their own lives in danger too.

Rainer Bock, Seumas Sargent, Erik Madsen and Friederike Becht round out the international cast.

“With The Seed, we would like to draw attention to an important global issue because it is about the struggle for food,” Ard Degeto Senior Vice President of Drama Christoph Pellander told Deadline. “With a top cast in front of and behind the camera, this is an exciting German-Norwegian co-production that will not only reach the German audience but also attract international attention.“

Pellander is overseeing the drama for Ard Degeto along with Head of Acquisitions and Co-Productions Sebastian Lückel, with Elisabeth Tangen doing the same for Nrk. The producers are Odeon Fiction’s Britta Meyermann (Spy City) and Mischa Hofmann and the Director of Photography is Ian Blumers. FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Creative Europe Media of the European Union, the German Motion Picture Fund and the Czech Tax Incentive are supporting the production.

Babylon Berlin commissioner Ard Degeto and Nrk have been two of the most active co-producers of European drama this year. Last month, Deadline revealed Nrk had ordered a drama about Leonard Cohen’s relationship with muse Marianne Ihlen from the UK’s Buccaneer Media, Oslo-based Redpoint Productions and Canada’s Connect3 Media, for example.

Ard Degeto is working on several new dramas, including mystery thriller series Oderbruch, which is co-produced by Syrreal Entertainment and CBS Studios. Others such as Scandinavian series Blackwater, co-produced with Sweden’s Svt, ITV Studios-owned Apple Tree Productions and Filmpool Nord) are in post-production.

The firm is a wholly owned subsidiary of German public broadcaster Ard, commissioning and producing more than 100 productions of feature films, TV movies and series each year. It also acquires programs, with all of its content going out on the Das Erste (Ardi) channel and streaming platform Mediathek.

‘Westworld': What Body Is Maeve Building?
Westworld (2016)
(Spoilers ahead for the April 19 episode of “Westworld” on HBO)

So, uh, a lot happened on “Westworld” on Sunday, and the sort of low-key spy games that Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and her crew have been playing have now spilled over into a full-fledged war with Serac (Vincent Cassel) now that Serac is in control of Delos. And on top of that, Maeve (Thandie Newton) is about to go all-out after Charlotte-Dolores destroyed Hector’s (Rodrigo Santoro) pearl.

Maeve didn’t spend a long time mourning, though. She was inside Serac’s Matrix-like virtual construct — her old one destroyed a couple episodes back, as you may recall — trying to interrogate Connells-Dolores when that tragedy struck. Charlotte was presumably going to destroy Maeve as well but she was interrupted by a gunfight and had to flee.

‘Westworld’ Finale Review: Season 2 Closes With Gripping Battles for Control and Debates Over Human Nature
Westworld (2016)
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Westworld” Season 2, Episode 10, “The Passenger.”]

Diagnostic Report

All the timelines finally collide, the hosts make their escape, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) lays out her endgame, and the Man in Black (Ed Harris) confronts the nature of his reality. Plus, viewers got to go inside the Forge and witness a whole lot of people get shot and killed (including at least one series regular)…

Damn, a lot sure does happen in these 90 minutes. Perhaps the simplest way to do this is go character by character.

What Happens to Maeve?

After she escapes Delos’ control and sends a herd of robot bison rampaging through the Mesa hub, the surviving hosts go on a pilgrimage to the Valley Beyond, a journey Maeve (Thandie Newton) wants to help them complete. In between the hosts and the promised land, however, is Delos Corp., whose initial attack has pinned down Maeve’s posse until Lee (Simon Quarterman...

Westworld Season 2 Review
Five episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

Bring yourself back online.

The brainchild of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s cerebral interpretation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi western, Westworld became the most-watched first season of an original series in HBO history, earning the network a bevy of accolades, and vindicating the Time Warner division’s $100 million gamble.

At season’s end, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) shepherded the robot revolt against humanity, killing countless Delos’ executives and the park’s co-creator, Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), thereby initiating his last narrative. The finale had its pièce de résistance deadened, however,...

Chaos Takes Control in New Westworld Poster and Viral Videos Which Leads To a New Promo
HBO sent Westworld fans on a little hunt today to uncover some new stuff promoting the second season of the series. A bunch of viral videos flooded the Twitter accounts of the cast of the series containing pieces of a puzzle. Once fans "decrypted" the tweets, they were treated to a first look at the new season 2 poster, which you can see above.

Basically, you would just have to go to the Discover Westworld website where you would type the following to the A.I. named Aeden... "control takes chaos." Then Aiden would provide the next hint, "...to become strong than them." By flipping the phrase to "chaos takes control," you would unlock poster.

Then, hidden in the poster, where the desert meets the mountains, you will find a hidden code that reads 687474703A2F2F6269742E6 C792F3246447A696567.
