'Get Millie Black' Is the Underrated Crime Thriller Everyone Missed in 2024
Image
Earlier this fall, HBO and Channel 4 shared their new collaboration Get Millie Black with international audiences. Developed by prolific Jamaican novelist Marlon James, the series was filmed in 2022 and began airing this November.

The series follows Millie-Jean Black (Tamara Lawrence), a Jamaican detective serving the Jamaican Police Force after being controversially ousted by Scotland Yard. Known for her independence and resourcefulness, Black moves at her own pace, disregarding traditional police protocol. When the case of a missing girl arrives at her desk, Millie approaches the dire situation with the utmost urgency. However, the case forces Millie to confront her tumultuous past, treatment of her friends, and her relationship with her work.

‘Profile’: A Journalist, a Terrorist and a Tale Told Completely Online
Image
A computer screen chimes to life. Windows proliferate. Notifications ping. Video-call boxes pop up, tabs multiply, messenger apps ticker endlessly, a stream of bite-size demands for attention. But enough about my average Wednesday evening — we’re here to talk about the newly released Profile, which is exactly like the above description except it also, in extremely dubious taste,...

First Trailer for Computer Screen Film 'Profile' Starring Valene Kane
Timur Bekmambetov at an event for Abraham Lincoln : Chasseur de vampires (2012)
"He's a hunter, he wants to seduce me first!" Focus Features has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie computer screen thriller titled Profile, from filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov. This originally premiered back in 2018 at the Berlinale & SXSW Film Festival, which is when I first saw it (here's my positive review). The content might be exactly why it has taken so long for it to finally open. An undercover British journalist infiltrates the online propaganda of the so-called Islamic State, only to be sucked in by her recruiter. The film basically asks "how could a woman be seduced and tricked into joining Isis and becoming a sex slave?" Well, you have to watch to find out. The unconventional thriller plays out entirely on a computer screen in the Screenlife style. Starring Valene Kane & Shazad Latif, plus Christine Adams, Morgan Watkins, Amir Rahimzadeh, and Emma Cater. This is a chilling cautionary tale,...
