Dean DeBlois returns to the fantasy world of Vikings and dragons with a live-action remake of his original How to Train Your Dragon. While many are concerned that the film is a retread of the original with live actors, our own Tyler Nichols enjoyed the film despite the concerns. He mentions in his review, “There’s always plenty of debate whenever one of these live-action adaptations of a cartoon releases. No matter what filmmakers do, there’s always going to be a sect of people who disapprove. As proven by Lilo & Stitch, I am not one of those people, and simply want the cartoon translated to real life. That means there are going to be some changes because, let’s face it, cartoons don’t have to deal with logic in the same way.”

Update: This story was originally published March 20, 2025; it was updated on May 27, 2025 with the addition of Lilo & Stich.
Following the disappointing performance of Snow White at the box office earlier this year, Disney reportedly put a live-action remake of Tangled on hold and hit pause on other projects in development. However, the fantastic, record-smashing opening weekend of Lilo & Stitch may convince the House of Mouse to once again aggressively remake its animated features.
Disney first started re-imagining its animation classics into live-action features during the '90s, and that trend has only accelerated in the 21st century. The next remake on the horizon is Moana, which features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as Maui from the 2016 original. But that won’t be arriving in theaters until July 2026.
Until Moana debuts, our rankings for all of Disney’s live-action remakes are up to date through the release of Lilo & Stitch.

“Lilo & Stitch” just did more in its opening weekend than “Snow White” made in it’s entire box office run!
It seems “Lilo & Stitch” will be another box office hit for the Walt Disney Company. It’s estimated to bring in almost $342 million globally in the opening weekend. Domestically, it is set to bring in $183 million.
For comparison, “Snow White” brought in about $205 million globally. This was after weeks in theaters and a “re-release” for Mother’s Day weekend. “Lilo & Stitch” brought almost as much domestically at opening as the Rachel Zegler-led flop did in weeks.
To top all that, “Lilo & Stitch” landed the title of the biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever (not adjusted for inflation), beating out Top Gun: Maverick at $160 million.
“Lilo & Stitch” far exceeded expectations.
The new Disney live-action remake far exceeded expectations for its debut. Originally, it was set to make $120 million.

Even as Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White was struggling at the box office recently, the Mouse House knew that it could rely on Lilo & Stitch to turn the narrative around. The movie debuted this week to a stellar box office response, breaking Memorial Day records and setting itself up for massive success in the long run. It could even end up becoming Disney’s first billion-dollar hit since Moana 2 last year. The studio has been having a rough time at the box office this year, with Snow White tanking horribly, and its two Marvel offerings — Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* — underperforming both domestically and worldwide.
With $145 million domestically and around $158 million from overseas markets, Lilo & Stitchgrossed around $304 million in its global box office debut. It took just a weekend to out-gross Snow White’s lifetime haul by over $100 million. By comparison, Top Gun: Maverick made...

Today, Universal and Dreamworks want audiences to open their hearts to the classic story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a would-be Viking king, and Toothless, Hiccup’s best friend and a Night Fury dragon of the skies, for the latest How to Train Your Dragon trailer. Before the new promo took flight online, Marvel fans got a silver-screen look at the trailer ahead of the studio’s new film Thunderbolts*. The footage features classic scenes and characters from the original animated film in live-action, bringing Cressida Cowell’s beloved tale to a new generation of fans.
How to Train Your Dragon focuses on the special friendship between a young and unheroic Viking boy named Hiccup, and Toothless, an injured dragon he nurses back to health. The movies chronicled Hiccup and Toothless’ quest to combat humanity’s prejudice against dragons, the ache of overcoming the loss of a parent, and first love.

Disney must be doing really well with the Disney Store Japan merchandise because they are releasing even more pastel collection plush to the United States next week! I have been saying that if they brought the asian park merchandise here people would love it, and that seems to be the case.
The new wave will include plush and very popular keychains!
Fans can purchase the new plush on Monday, April 14, starting at 8 Am Pst, 11 Am Est.
Included in the collection are,
Chip, Dale, Thumper, Miss Bunny (yay), Marie, Stitch, Winnie the Pooh, and Dumbo!
I am incredibly excited to be getting access to the keychains along with the plush! I already have some of the Duffy and Friends keychains that a fan sent me.
What do you think? Comment and let us know!

From 1989 to 1999, the Disney Renaissance was in full swing. Beginning with "The Little Mermaid" and concluding with "Tarzan," the 10 films Walt Disney Animation Studios produced during that time marked a critically and commercially successful resurgence for the studio. The studio had previously struggled in the 18 years following Walt Disney's death in 1966, with films such as "The Black Cauldron" undergoing massive production issues and bombing at the box office. The success of the Disney Renaissance coincided with the expanding home video market, and direct-to-video sequels to some of the studios' biggest hits were produced, with "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Lion King" among them. By the 2000s, direct-to-video sequels for "Pinocchio," "Dumbo" and "The Aristocats" were also in development, but were ultimately scrapped when John Lasseter took over as Chief Creative Officer of all of Disney Animation in 2006.

The live-action remake of the beloved animated outing How to Train Your Dragon soared into CinemaCon with a first screening. Written, produced and directed by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original, animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, the upcoming remake stars Mason Thames taking the lead as the dragon-loving Viking, Hiccup.
Following the exclusive look at the new movie, the first reactions on social media have been mostly blazing, but there are still some ready to throw water on the fire. The general feeling is that the new version of the movie is a worthy live-action remake, but lacks any kind of risk taking as it sticks very close to the original film. On X, Jeremy Kazieva gushed that the film is "The Best Live-action Film I’Ve Seen. This was literally just like the animated movie, so if you enjoyed that, you’ll Really love this too!

Snow White North America Box Office: Might Lose The Top Spot To A Working Man In Its 2nd Weekend(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Snow White’s struggles at the box office continue. The film finishes its first week with an underwhelming result. The way it is going, the Disney feature might have to compete with Jason Statham’s A Working Man for the top spot. The budget for Statham’s movie is nowhere near the budget for this Disney tentpole film. Keep scrolling for more.
The Disney feature is receiving a very underwhelming response at the box office. The film started off with a disappointing opening weekend collection earning even lower than Dumbo and the already low projection by the industry. It has a very low chance of turning around its collections as A Minecraft Movie is also releasing this coming Friday, which has a good hype among the fans, especially the youth.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, fairy tales weren’t just stuff one would read to kids at night; they were a ticket to box office success. Disney’s latest live-action Snow White seemed like a dream project. Rachel Zegler played the titular character, and Gal Gadot starred as the Evil Queen.
But some fairy tales fail to achieve their happy ending. The fall of Snow White at the box office exceeded the humiliation suffered by the Evil Queen. Its massive budget added fuel to the fire, creating a huge failure for Disney.

So, what exactly happened? The answer is not that simple because multiple elements played their part in influencing the situation. Let’s take a look at eight major factors that led Snow White to its unfortunate commercial failure.

As much as fans of the How to Train Your Dragon feel this live-action remake is unnecessary, the original’s writer/director, Dean DeBlois, returns to the Viking world for this entry. “I decided to revisit How to Train Your Dragon because it felt like an amazing opportunity to not only direct a live-action movie but to be jumping back into a world that I frankly miss,” DeBlois says. “I miss these characters. I miss this world, and I love movies that have a really poignant message buried deep within a moving spectacle. Adventure, wonder. That’s what this movie really packs. It’s about a regular kid who gets to bond with a powerful animal and there is something that’s universally wish fufilling about that,” He added.

Disney’s live-action Snow White film is now in theaters, but it has been plagued with criticism and suspicion from film fans since its first trailer was released. 4th Update Sunday Am Writethru: Disney’s Snow White is coming in lighter for the weekend with $43M domestic and an $87.3M global start. Not a happy ending for this $270M production, which was impacted by the actors strike, Covid breakout, a set fire and more.

Of all the Disney animated classics to have been given the live-action treatment, few are more beloved than 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a landmark feature that opened the door to a whole vault of canonical fairy tales ideally suited to the form. That, in turn, led to original stories, building the studio a vast, field-leading toon library and a legacy beloved the world over. If Snow White arrives accompanied by an echo chamber of overblown online controversies, that has zero bearing on the pleasures of this 21st century update. Even those with knives out for the movie might have to admit it’s no poisoned apple.

For practically the past century, Disney has crafted some of the most beloved films on the big screen. Utilizing animated artistry and brilliant visual storytelling, The Walt Disney Company has enchanted and delighted entire generations.
That said, as much as we adore our favorite princesses and cartoon characters, there's something truly remarkable when the artists and filmmakers have free reign, resulting in some delightfully bizarre features. Disney+ has nearly the entire filmography of the animation studio and then some, but here are our picks for just how weird things can get at the house of mouse.

Presented in "Fantasound" in 1940, Walt Disney's concert feature blended famous pieces of classical music with animation magic.

The idea of animated features getting live-action remakes is nothing new, but the production of live-action remakes has obviously shifted into overdrive in recent years, with Disney bringing us the likes of Cinderella, The Jungle Book (again), Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid… the list goes on. And it seems like DreamWorks has been impressed by that animation-to-live-action business model, as they’re teaming up with Universal Pictures to bring a live-action remake of their 2010 animated feature How to Train Your Dragon to theatres on June 13, 2025. In anticipation of this release, we here at JoBlo have decided to put together a list of Everything We Know About the live-action How to Train Your Dragon… and here we go:

The concept of reference points in animation is common if you're in the know, but might surprise folks who don't have much experience with or knowledge of the history of the medium. Even the greatest and most talented illustrators have to start somewhere when creating a character, and it's no different for the craftspeople working for Walt Disney Animation Studios. In the early eras of Disney animation, reference points were often live actors or animals. In the cases of "Bambi" and "Dumbo," for example, if you check out the 1941 film "The Reluctant Dragon" (a movie that was itself bizarrely censored for one particular animated detail), you can see animators literally watching how deer and elephants move so they can accurately capture those minute details in designing the titular characters.
As the world approached the 21st century, however, Disney animators started to look not just to real people, but to specifically...

Few directors know how to tap into the magic of childhood wonder as much as Steven Spielberg. In 1982, he once again solidified his reign as the king of blockbusters with his alien adventure "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," drawing in countless audience members — young and old — to gross nearly $800 million worldwide. They were swept away by John Williams' rousing score and touched by the power of E.T.'s glowing love, as well as the emotional performances from little Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore. "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" is now ranked as Spielberg's best movie on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's hard to argue too much with that.
But despite becoming a critical hit and cultural phenomenon, there was some overseas controversy surrounding its release. "E.T." was originally going to be a horror movie before Spielberg transformed the alien-meets-world story into more family-friendly fare. Be that as it may, Scandinavia felt the movie...

Disney is still committed to adapting their most beloved animated films into live-action movies, despite their past attempts receiving mixed reviews at best. Cinderella, which they already remade in 2015, is next on the chopping block. However, according to a new report, the film will potentially be the most unfaithful adaptation thus far. In fact, it won't even include Cinderella. The new live-action Prince Charming movie was announced last October, with Paddington's Paul King developing the film. Chris Hemsworth was also in talks to play the titular Prince, although, that appears to have fallen through. Since then, Twisters star Daisy Edgar-Jones has reportedly been cast in the movie, and her role has just been revealed.
Disney's live-action Prince Charming is reportedly moving ahead, according to Hollywood scooper Daniel Richtman. According to the report, the film will follow an unnamed animator (Edgar-Jones) who sketches drawings of Prince Charming from Cinderella. One day her drawing comes to life.

35 years later, Tim Burton still hasn't beat his own box office record, which he accomplished with his third feature movie. Though he has directed many popular titles throughout his career, even Tim Burton's best movies aren’t known for being blockbuster successes. Rather, they're loved for their signature gothic tone and practical visuals, as well as their weird worlds and unique characters. The director's filmography has some contrasting titles, ranging from great to controversial to middling, and consists mainly of remakes of popular stories and Burton originals.
Notably, Burton finally gained redemption after Dumbo's flop and is having an artistic resurgence at the moment — having re-found his passion for unconventional and grotesque narratives with the Netflix adaptation of the Addams Family, Wednesday, and the sequel to his 1988 cult classic, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Accordingly, many were on the lookout for Burton's response to a possible The Nightmare Before Christmas sequel, as...

Disney has struggled when it comes to their live-action movies. These films see high box office earnings, but they also receive their fair share of backlash from audiences and critics. Some die-hard fans get upset when the studio makes changes to their favorite Disney films. Others think these remakes are for the best since they give the studio a chance to remedy some of the more controversial aspects of those early animated films.
When it comes to Disney live-action remakes, the studio often takes care to avoid any mishaps or risqué moments. Unfortunately, these films are not immune to their own controversies. This list features the Disney remakes that are the biggest offenders, causing either raised eyebrows or full-on outrage among viewers.

Angelina Jolie is ready to return as Maleficent. The actor first appeared as the evil fairy in the 2014 live-action movie, Maleficent, which retold the events of the studio's animated classic, Sleeping Beauty, from the perspective of the iconic Disney villain.
During an interview with Deadline to promote her new film Maria, Jolie shared how somehow had recently told her that "every character you've played for almost a decade now, they're a bit traumatized. Even your Marvel character [Eternals' Thena] has Ptsd. ... She's not mentally stable." The actor continued that this extended to Maleficent, explaining that the Disney villain "was going through a lot, like worried about the child, people judging... she was struggling in bouts. But no, she's always, she's always Maleficent, so she's maybe the least." This prompted Deadline to ask Jolie if fans were ever going to see her take on Maleficent again. "I would love that. Among the best characters that Disney has given the public throughout the years, several were animals. Some have been confined to the role of sidekicks. Others, however, ended up being the stars of the story. Not every film has to be centered around humans for the characters to be relatable, and some of the best Disney animated movies prove it. From comedies to emotional stories, Disney films will get you emotionally attached to lions and fish.
Maybe animals are a crafty and subtle way to explore the complex nature of people through a mask, using their charm to tell deeper stories about friendship, family, and adversity. Sometimes, downturned ears and soft paws make a character appear more sympathetic to the audience, allowing them to recognize their behavior and emotions from an unusual perspective. Whether for esthetical or more profound reasons, not all animals were crafted to be the Disney princesses' sidekicks.

Tim Burtons Upcoming Remake Of 66-Year-Old Horror Movie Now Has A Huge Challenge After Beetlejuice 2
Tim Burton already has a follow-up movie to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in the works, though his next film now has a bigger challenge to succeed after the enthusiastic response to his 2024 horror-comedy. While Burton had already begun his exciting comeback with Wednesday season 1 on TV, Beetlejuice 2 is the gothic fantasy horror auteurs big cinematic return after the mixed reviews and box office disappointment of 2019s Dumbo. His sequel to the 1988 horror movie Beetlejuice officially proves that classic Burton is back, with Beetlejuice 2s stellar reviews and box office performance providing his biggest hit in over a decade.
Even before his hit 2024 movie was released in theaters, it was announced that Tim Burton was attached to direct the upcoming remake of 1958s Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. The classic sci-fi horror movie is right up Burtons alley, harking back to his dabbling in the genre with Mars Attacks! in 1996 and...

Tim Burton and Michael Keaton's film collaborations highlight how strong the pairing works together in both their best and worst films. Tim Burton's early successes as a Disney animator and his big break helming Pee-Wee's Big Adventure pushed him into the spotlight as a filmmaker around the same time Michael Keaton established himself as a comic star. The pair first came together on a project with Beetlejuice, with Keaton playing the titular comedic undead bio-exorcist. The success of that film led Burton and Keaton to the cast and cast of 1989's Batman, a defining film of the superhero genre and one of cinema's biggest successes.
Since then, the pair have worked together on sequels and remakes, highlighting a strong familiarity with one another's strengths. Even in their weakest film, Keaton is able to key into perfectly to Burton's trademark sardonic perspective, elevating some of Burton's weaker material. Their latest...

After years of waiting, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is finally here, and here is every Tim Burton actor who appears in the film. Despite Tim Burton directing all kinds of different films, the director is known for frequently collaborating with a small group of actors, with there being very few actors who have only been in the main cast of one Tim Burton movie. As early as the dawn of the 1980s, director Chris Sanders has been fixated on a little creature that lived in a forest. “It was a bit of a monster with no real explanation as to where it came from. It was all about how he found a way to belong,” he told critic Bilge Ebiri for Vulture’s oral history of Sanders’s breakout hit Lilo & Stitch. That longing for connection in a hostile environment has been threaded throughout his work since.

Jenna Ortega reflects on not being cast in Tim Burton's live-action remake of Dumbo. The 2019 film was made in the wake of Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and other animated Disney films being remade in a live-action format. The screening of Beetlejuice 2 in Venice reveals a true return to form for gothic film auteur Tim Burton, reviving the director's critical acclaim and commercial success after Dumbo's unfortunate disappointments in 2019. Arriving 36 years after the 1988 original Beetlejuice movie, Burton returns to the cinematic directors chair as he continues the story of the Deetz family tree and the mischievous Betelgeuse in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Michael Keaton and Tim Burton have collaborated on several projects throughout their careers, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to be a long-anticipated return to form for the filmmaking duo. The pair first started working together on the original Beetlejuice back in 1988, which was only Burtons second feature-length film. While Disney is known for its high-quality films aimed at young audiences, it has never avoided including dark aspects that pushed the age rating to its limits. In the wake of Keaton and Burton teaming up for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the Batman star said he “sucked” in the live-action adaptation of the Disney classic.
“I love working with Tim so much, but I don’t think we ever really analyzed why we work pretty well together; we just do,” Keaton told The New York Times in an interview, which Burton was also part of. “I think I let him down on one movie, but that’s just me, and it bugs me to this day. I was clueless on Dumbo. I sucked in Dumbo.”
Burton added, “I don’t even know what you’re talking about. But whatever.”
Keaton and Burton’s work relationship dates back to the first Beetlejuice film 1988. The duo teamed up again for 1989’s Batman and in the 1992 sequel Batman Returns.

In a weird way, director Tim Burton and actor Michael Keaton's first three films together form a spiritual trilogy. 1988's "Beetlejuice" is a giddily naughty creation that Burton himself has deemed an anti-Spielberg movie, blending grotesque zaniness with a disdain for Reagan-era yuppie culture. 1989's "Batman," on the other hand, is a Gothic, operatic comic book crime thriller where the hero is a wealthy, reclusive oddball tormented by his traumas of his childhood. It's 1992's "Batman Returns" that subsequently melds aspects of the two films to create a boldly twisted superhero tentpole that's as much a dark political satire by way of a Universal-style monster movie as it is a film about a guy dressed as a bat punching out criminals.

I had to look it up, but the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel is actually Tim Burton’s first movie since Dumbo. That was five years ago. The live-action adaptation was released by Disney in 2019, and in another world, it could have been Burton’s final movie. While speaking with Variety, the director admitted that he considered retiring after Dumbo.
“Honestly, after ‘Dumbo,’ I really didn’t know,” Burton said. “I thought that could have been it, really. I could have retired, or become… well, I wouldn’t have become an animator again, that’s over.” The director added that working on the Wednesday series for Netflix helped reconnect him to making things. “We went off to Romania and it felt like it was a creative health camp,” Burton said. “It went so well.”
Burton continued, “Oftentimes, when you get into Hollywood, you try to be responsible to what you’re doing...
