How France’s #MeToo Movement Is Transforming Cannes and the Country’s Film Industry: ‘The Conditions Under Which Work Is Produced Matter’
Image
This year’s Cannes Film Festival kicked off with Gerard Depardieu’s 18-month suspended sentence for sexual assault on two women during the filming of “The Green Shutters.” While that case itself has nothing to do with the festival, the sentencing of Depardieu, once a frequent presence at Cannes, was a reminder of how far France has come in embracing the #MeToo movement it was initially slow to champion.

And that wasn’t the only sign of shifting attitudes in the country and its most prominent showcase for cinema when it comes to sexual violence. This year, Cannes has issued a new rule banning filmmakers or talent accused of sexual misconduct from walking the red carpet and presenting films at the festival. Because of the change, the festival forbid Theo Navarro-Mussy from attending the premiere of Dominik Moll’s “Case 137” because he has been accused of rape and sexual assault.

Anatomy Of A Fall, streaming on Netflix from Tuesday, April 29

Justine Triet's slowburn courtroom drama - written with her partner - Arthur Harari won the Cannes Palme d'Or before heading on a statuette-winning spree around the awards circuit, culminating in an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Sandra Hüller could also easily have won for her performance as writer Sandra Voyter, who stands accused of the murder of her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) at their remote mountain chalet. Their partially-sighted son Daniel (Milo Graner) finds his dad's body and the scene is set for an exploration of whether it was death by misadventure or planning which remains ambiguous to the last. Among several films from 2023 that scrutinised the way that someone presents themselves can be put on trial as much as their actual deeds, Triet leaves it up to us -...

Anatomy Of A Fall Ending Explained: Did Sandra Kill Her Husband?
Image
Living with a spouse or life partner can be rough at times, and it is usually a couple's ability to soldier through difficult spells together that shows the true strength of their relationship. Introducing a child into the mix can also be challenging, often changing the dynamic and sometimes even upending traditional parental roles. But what if one of those rough patches ended with the sudden death of a partner?

That is the situation that Justine Triet presents in the opening moments of her Palme d'Or-winner "Anatomy of a Fall." However, she takes it one step further by adding another nightmarish layer to the scenario: What if the remaining partner became the prime suspect in her spouse's death and had to suffer the ignominy and stress of having her marriage raked over in court while also grieving her loss?

It's not exactly an original setup; murder mysteries focusing on a...

Your browser does not support the video tag.

At the end of Anatomy of a Fall, Sandra is acquitted, although the facts of the case still aren't entirely clear, making the true cause of Samuel's death ambiguous. The 2023 movie is a legal drama from French director Justine Triet, featuring performances from Sandra Hller, Swann Arlaud, Samuel Theis, Milo Machado Graner, and more. Anatomy of a Fall received great reviews and enjoyed lots of awards success, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and picking up five Oscars 2024 nominations, winning for Best Original Screenplay.

After the mysterious death of her husband, Samuel (Samuel Theis), Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hller) becomes the prime suspect. Sandra's best defense is to claim Samuel died by suicide, which even she tells her lawyer, Vincent (Swann Arlaud), is implausible at first. The only person who can back up her version of events is her blind son,...

Is Anatomy of a Fall Based on a True Story: Explained
Image
The cinematic landscape is not just for the sake of ‘entertainment’ and ‘merriment’ alone, for oftentimes it leaves the audiences with traces of unanswered questions, tickling their brain chemistry in the right way. While in 2023, movies like Barbie posed some very vital yet harsh questions about society and women, movies like Oppenheimer made viewers question the drawbacks of progress in the scientific world and the integrity of human morality.

On the other hand, in the same year, we had a French legal drama directed by Justine Triet which sparked the most curiosity among viewers. Called The Anatomy of a Fall, the film captivated audiences at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, drawing viewers into a complex web of emotional tension, courtroom intrigue, and personal revelations.

Marie Amachoukeli: 'The link between a nanny and her child is often stronger than the link between a mother and her child' Photo: UniFrance It took director Marie Amachoukeli quite a while to launch forth into her second feature Àma Gloria which explores the relationship between a nanny and her charge and all the taboos surrounding the subject.

Amachoukeli, who is French of Georgian extraction, had just finished Party Girl in 2014 (co-directed and written with Claire Burger and Samuel Theis) which won the Camera d’Or prize for a first film at the Cannes Film Festival. It tells of a 60-year-old woman who provides company for men at nightclubs on the French-German border and who decides to leave the street life behind her by marrying a regular customer.

Rather than seize the moment she explained: “I wanted to wait a while,...

Blu-ray Review: Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall on the Criterion Collection
Image
Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall chaotically drops us into the chalet of Sandra (Sandra Hüller), Samuel (Samuel Theis), and their visually impaired young son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner), in the French Alps. Sandra, a successful German writer, is in the midst of an interview with a visiting journalist (Camille Rutherford) that an unseen Samuel attempts to derail with his ceaseless blaring of an instrumental cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” from his upstairs office. Once her husband has succeeded at his mission, Sandra sends the journalist home before going upstairs to work herself. Not too long after, Samuel is found dead outside the house by Daniel, who had been walking around the property with the family dog.

As its title suggests, that series of events will be thoroughly dissected over Anatomy of a Fall’s runtime, first at the home and then in the courtroom. Did Samuel’s frequent...

I'm So Glad Anatomy Of A Fall Didn't Do That Twist (It Would've Ruined The Movie)
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Anatomy of a Fall's ending.

Snoop, the canine in Anatomy of a Fall, defies "the dog dies" trope. Messi's portrayal of Snoop won the dog an award at the Cannes Film Festival. Daniel's connection with Snoop hints at the movie's final scene of Snoop and Sandra holding a deeper meaning.

Co-written by director Justine Triet, the Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall deftly avoids a movie trope that viewers absolutely detest. Not only was the film's narrative decision regarding the family dog a popular one with audiences, but it works in Anatomy of a Fall's favor, especially where its ending is concerned. Starring Sandra Hüller as a writer named Sandra Voyter, the film chronicles a woman's attempts to prove her innocence after her husband's tragic — and suspicious — demise. While on a retreat in the isolated mountains near Grenoble, Samuel (Samuel Theis) continually interrupts his wife's work.

After Blue (Bertrand Mandico)

In the post-apocalyptic nightmare of After Blue, humanity—or what’s left of it—roams a former paradise turned wasteland. The Armageddon that wrecked the Earth in some undetermined past left no machines behind, no screens, and, perhaps most conspicuously, no men. In the distant planet the human race fled to, and which writer-director Bertrand Mandico’s film is named after, “they were the first to die,” we’re warned early on: “their hairs grew inside them, and killed them.” As it was for its predecessor, The Wild Boys, After Blue is suffused in a feverish ecstasy, that wild excitement that comes from a watching one world crumble and another jutting into being from scratch, a vision of...

Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller is reportedly in talks to join Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun reboot
Image
Anatomy of a Fall actress Sandra Hüller could be making a roast for Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun reboot, so how hot and wet do you like it? A report from industry insider Daniel Richtman says Sandra Hüller is in talks to play the romantic lead in the forthcoming comedy, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin from the Police Squad series and Naked Gun film trilogy.

In the Naked Gun trilogy, Lt. Frank Drebin falls in love with Jane Spencer (Lisa Marie Presley), an assistant for industrialist Vincent Ludwig, utterly unaware of his villainy. After a slapstick-ridden meet-cute, Frank and Jane form a heated courtship accompanied by steamy home-cooked meals, ultra-protected sex, and trips to the baseball field.

How Liam Neeson and Hüller’s characters cross paths in the Naked Gun reboot remains a mystery. We must also wait...

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Scores Theatrical Release in China (Exclusive)
Image
French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall‘s against-the-odds global box office run isn’t over just yet. The acclaimed courtroom thriller, which won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or in 2023 and the Oscar for best original screenplay last week, has secured a nationwide theatrical release date in China on March 29.

Chinese specialty distributor Road Pictures will handle the local marketing and release of Anatomy of a Fall in partnership with the state-backed China Film Group. The film’s writer and director Justine Triet will attend a local premiere event in Beijing on March 24.

Anatomy of a Fall is being positioned as a specialty release, but its feminist themes could align well with a recent trend of women-focused stories being a major box office force in China. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie defied early expectations last year to become a word-of-mouth hit by resonating with China’s young urban women,...

2024 Oscar Snubs: Killers of the Flower Moon & Maestro ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

The 2024 Oscar saw Oppenheimer bag seven awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Picture. Poor Things won four awards at the Academy this year. However, there were some big 2023 movies that either won just one or not even a single award. Like every year, we witnessed again how some movies, directors or actors’ work got completely unrecognised.

From Robert De Niro’s Killers of the Flower Moon to Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, many famous films were brutally ignored at the 2024 Oscar ceremony. We have listed several such movies that were nominated in different categories, but got snubbed by the Academy.

Major 2024 Oscar Snubs – Killers of The Flower Moon

The Martin Scorsese directorial received ten Oscar nominations this year – from Best Director to Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro). To everyone’s surprise, the film didn’t win a single award.

In winning the award, Triet and Harari beat out several other Best Picture nominees to claim the top prize. Also nominated in the category were David Hemingson for “The Holdovers,” Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer for “Maestro,” and Celine Song for “Past Lives.” The sole non-Best Picture nominee recognized in the category was “May December,” which received its sole Oscar nomination for Samy Burch’s script.

Theater of Truth: On "Anatomy of a Fall"
Image
Anatomy of a Fall.Anatomy of a Fall (2023) begins with a black screen and an auditory fragment: a short exchange between writer Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller) and a young student who’s come to interview her about her career. When the film’s image and sound come into sync, both of them realize that the student’s phone has failed to record their conversation. Reality, seemingly, starts only when the “record” button has been pressed. We never see the titular fall in Justine Triet’s courtroom drama, only a corpse. The moment when Sandra’s husband, Samuel Maleski (Samuel Theis), plunges to his death from the attic of their chalet is presented only in simulations, both speculative flashbacks based on courtroom testimony and technical reenactments from expert witnesses. Though a trial is ostensibly a search for the truth, Triet's film is a metacinematic treatise on epistemology, showing only so much...

Screenwriters of ‘American Fiction,’ ‘Past Lives’ and More Reveal Toughest Scenes, From the Invention of a Lie to A Sadistic Husband’s Arrival
Image
The creative process can sometimes be highly organized, and others completely ephemeral: for every story that’s been mapped out beat by beat there’s another that arrived completely intact from a writer’s fingers in a feverish outpouring of inspiration. Somewhere in between these extremes is the unglamorous, frequently tedious work of chipping away at an idea, a sequence, or line of dialogue that gets to the heart of what a scribe wants to say — or more precisely, hopes to communicate.

Ahead of the Academy Awards on March 10, Variety spoke with several of the screenwriters nominated in the categories of original and animated screenplay about the scenes they found most difficult to write. Whether it was identifying the kernel of an idea from which the rest of their narrative popped or translating the inspiration of source material (or real life) to something dramatically credible on the page, they explain...

Anatomy of a Fall French producer Marie-Ange Luciani put in a flying appearance at the Berlinale this week with Claire Burger’s coming-of-age drama Langue Étrangère which received a warm reception in competition.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Editor on Complicated Process of Weaving in the Trial With Flashbacks: “It’s Like the Point of View of God”
Image
From the moment editor Laurent Sénéchal read the script for Anatomy of a Fall, he knew he had a challenge ahead of him when it came to the crucial flashback showing a drag-out fight between Sandra (Sandra Hüller), an author on trial, and her husband, Samuel (Samuel Theis), who fell to his death off the roof of their Alpine home.

The scene arrives in the middle of Sandra’s trial over her role in Samuel’s plummet. What begins as just audio played for the courtroom is eventually brought to life for the audience watching the film. “When I was reading, I didn’t really know what would be the point of view,” Sénéchal says. “It’s like the point of view of God. For me, it was a bit tricky.”

That sequence is crucial to the success of director Justine Triet’s movie, which is Oscar-nominated for editing, as...

‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ Co-Writer Arthur Harari Says Star Sandra Hüller’s “Level Of Subtlety Is Very Rare” – Contenders Film: The Nominees
Image
When real-life couple Justine Triet and Arthur Harari set out to write Anatomy of a Fall, about a woman on trial for the murder of her husband, they built the story on relationships first and foremost.

“The first embryo was the relationship between the son and the mother and the idea of the son discovering he doesn’t really know who his mother is,” Harari said during a panel Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event. “And then the possibility of talking in a very deep and true way: What is a couple?”

In the Palme d’Or-winning film directed by Triet, Sandra Hüller stars as Sandra Voyter, a writer whose husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) has died after falling off the balcony of their home in the French Alps. As Sandra stands accused of pushing Samuel to his death, her partially sighted son Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner) is the...

Cool Stuff: Best Picture Nominee Anatomy Of A Fall Is Quickly Joining The Criterion Collection In May
Image
With film distributors becoming stingier about physical media and defaulting to streaming, The Criterion Collection has been picking up slack. For instance, Criterion has released physical copies of acclaimed Netflix originals like "The Irishman," "Roma," and "Marriage Story."

Joining the collection in May 2024 is Justine Triet's "Anatomy of a Fall," just released in North America back in October 2023 by Neon. As Criterion confirmed on Twitter, the film enters the collection alongside classics such as Michael Powell's "Peeping Tom."

Does "Anatomy of a Fall" deserve to be in such company? We at /Film think so, since we ranked it one of the 15 best movies of 2023. If you don't believe us, it won the Palme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival (the highest prize), and it's up for several Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director for Justine Triet).

The film's title homages the classic...

Meet Messi: The Canine Breakout of ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Who Trained for 2 Months for His Star-Making Scene
Image
[Editor’s note: The following interview includes spoilers for “Anatomy of a Fall.”]

All dogs deserve to play fetch on the beach. But for Messi, who starred as Snoop in “Anatomy of a Fall,” getting to enjoy Venice Beach — as well as a business class trip to the Oscars nominee luncheon and lots of quality pets from Bradley Cooper and Billie Eilish — is the culmination of months of hard work with his trainer, Laura Martin Contini.

Every time we see a dog in a film, the goal is for them to look like they’re just doing their own doggy thing and responding to the characters in a genuine way; how could dogs not? But each action, from lying down to running after a ball (Messi’s favorite), requires specific preparation so that the canine actor is ready for their closeup.

“Even the simplest things take a lot of work,” Martin Contini told IndieWire. And more complicated actions, like...

Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Cut to: 4 Oscar-Nominated Editors Analyzing Pivotal Moments in Their Films
Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
[Editor’s note: IndieWire reached out to “Killers of the Flower Moon” editing nominee Thelma Schoonmaker, but she was unavailable to participate.]

This season’s Best Editing Oscar nominees (which are also nominated for Best Picture) all explore existential crises, which make them dramatically compelling and relatable. Four of the editors — Laurent Sénéchal (“Anatomy of Fall”), Kevin Tent (“The Holdovers”), Jennifer Lame (“Oppenheimer“), and Yorgos Mavropsaridis (“Poor Things”) — selected a pivotal scene or sequence that best showcases their work, telling IndieWire how the scenes explore rhythm and pace, character importance, and why it was so challenging to get right.

In Justine Triet’s gripping murder mystery, “Anatomy of a Fall,” Sénéchal delicately balances point of view through memory and imagination, as Best Actress nominee Sandra Hüller stands trial for the murder of her husband. Through this crucible, the novelist is forced to confront love, marriage, parenting, guilt, fear, regret, and ruthless ambition.

In Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,...

One Of The Best Performances From Oscars 2024 Nominated Movies Is From A Dog
Image
Anatomy of a Fall received five Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Sandra Hüller, but one of the film's standout performances was by a dog. Messi, the border collie who played Snoop in Anatomy of a Fall, delivered a memorable and convincing performance, particularly in a dramatic scene involving Snoop's near-death experience. While animals are not eligible for Oscar nominations, Messi received special recognition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival with the Palm Dog Award.

A five-time nominated film at the 2024 Oscars featured one of the best performances of 2023, but the actual performer wasn't nominated because they're a dog. 2023 was a truly exceptional year for film all around, making for an impressive list of 2024 Oscar nominees across all categories. The acting categories at the 2024 Oscars are especially stacked with deserving nominees who gave outstanding performances in 2023 films.

With only five slots in each of the four acting categories, tons of...

‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ Review: The Psychological Ordeal Of A Toxic Marriage
Image
In her first Palm d’Or-winning feature film, Anatomy of a Fall, Justin Triet, like an expert surgeon wielding a scalpel, skillfully peels back the layers of this seemingly stable relationship, revealing concealed wounds and smoldering resentments that have festered beneath the surface for years. The once-intact facade of marital bliss crumbles as the protagonist Sandra (Sandra Hüller) navigates through the emotionally charged terrain of a relationship in turmoil. Triet’s narrative approach delicately dissects the intricacies of the characters’ emotions, laying bare the layers of suppressed anger and aggression that have built up over time. The film becomes a poignant exploration of the fragile equilibrium that exists between understanding and compromise in a long-term relationship. The thin bridge upon which the characters tread precariously reveals the delicate balance that has held the union together, even as the weight of unresolved issues threatens to tip the scales. Set against the...

An instrumental cover of 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P." soundtracks the death of the lead character's husband in Anatomy of a Fall, an event for which she is put on trial for murder. German funk group Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band performs the instrumental version of "P.I.M.P." featured in Anatomy of a Fall, which was chosen after director Justine Triet was unable to secure the rights to Dolly Parton's "Jolene" for the opening scene. The 50 Cent cover plays a significant role in the murder case and is used as a narrative tool to better understand the couple's relationship and the circumstances of his death.

An Anatomy a Fall Theory That Changes the Meaning of the Ending
Image
This article contains major Anatomy of a Fall spoilers.

Justine Triet’s new film, which just picked up nominations for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Director at the Oscars, as well as the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year, is a courtroom drama following a woman accused of killing her husband. The man in question was found dead after falling out of the window of their remote cabin. There were no witnesses. She says she didn’t do it. Did he fall? Did he jump? Or is she guilty? That’s for the court to decide in this fascinating character study that feels intense and real, and challenges the audience to do the work along with the jury.

The beauty of Anatomy of a Fall is that by the end we, the audience, don’t know conclusively whether Sandra (Sandra Hüller – who is nominated for the Best Actress Oscar...

Oscars: Sandra Hüller Breaks Through With Best Actress Nomination
Image
The Oscars, it seems, agree with The Hollywood Reporter: Sandra Hüller is a star.

When THR put the German actress on its cover for its Toronto Film Festival issue, it was under the headline “Actress of the Year?” It was an acknowledgment that Hüller had given two of the most outstanding performances in film in 2023: as a novelist accused of murder in Justine Triet’s mystery thriller Anatomy of a Fall and as a domestic Nazi in Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest.

On Tuesday, Hüller scored a nomination for the 2024 Oscars in the best actress category for Anatomy of a Fall. Both Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest were also nominated in the best picture and best director categories.

In Anatomy, Hüller plays Sandra Voyter, a successful German novelist living in the French Alps who may or may not have murdered...

International Insider: #MeToo In France; UK Unions; Israel Long Read
Image
Good afternoon Insiders, Max Goldbart here in a week that has had a distinctly ‘back to school’ feel to it. We’ve certainly been busy. Read on for the biggest stories of the week and sign up here.

Has #MeToo Finally Arrived in France?

Watershed: The past week has felt like a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement in France. The country’s film industry has been at the forefront of efforts to foster gender parity thanks to pioneering activist group Le Collectif 50/50 and initiatives such as the festival charter, along with extra state funding for movies hiring women for key crew positions. However, a culture of silence around allegations of sexual abuse by big figures such as Roman Polanski and Gérard Depardieu has long been a source of debate and consternation in and outside of the country. There are signs that a major shift is underway following a bombshell...

Why the Gerard Depardieu Allegations Are Sparking a Watershed Moment for France’s #MeToo Movement
Image
A decade ago, Gerard Depardieu played a character inspired by Dominique Strauss-Kahn — the disgraced former head of the International Monetary Fund who was accused of assaulting a hotel maid — in Abel Ferrara’s “Welcome to New York.” In an ironic twist, the iconic French actor has now become the poster boy for the country’s #MeToo movement, having been charged with rape and faced with over a dozen sexual assault allegations.

But the French remain divided over him due to his profile as a mascot of the country’s cinematic history. He’s starred in over 150 films, including classics such as Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” François Truffaut’s “Le Dernier Metro” and Bertrand Blier’s “Going Places.” However, the tide is starting to shift — while French President Emmanuel Macron refused to revoke his Legion of Honor, the Paris wax museum went ahead and removed his statue on Dec.

The 45-year-old actor and filmmaker is best known for his performance in the new movie Anatomy of a Fall, which just won two awards at the Golden Globes.

Samuel plays the husband of Sandra Huller‘s character in the movie.

French newspaper Liberation reported that a male crew member accused Samuel of rape during a cast and crew party that took place at an apartment halfway through the shoot of Je te jure. The anonymous crew member says that he stayed at the apartment as he was inebriated and he claims that Samuel raped him in the early morning hours.

Samuel claims that the encounter was consensual.

Instead of being fired from the project, producers figured out a way for Samuel to continue directing the movie without being in the room.

Golden Globes: Why Sandra Huller (‘Anatomy of a Fall’) will triumph for Best Film Drama Actress
Image
No actor has had a bigger breakout year in the awards circuit than Sandra Hüller, who has spent her 25-year career in European cinema, with prestige films such as “Requiem” (2006), “In the Aisles” (2018) and the Oscar-nominated “Toni Erdmann” (2016). This year, the German actress stars in two of the biggest international awards contenders: Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” from the United Kingdom and Poland, and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” from France, the latter of which she is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actress. Will she clinch the first major precursor award of the season on Sunday, January 7?

This is Hüller’s second collaboration with Triet, previously starring in her 2019 film “Sibyl.” In “Anatomy of a Fall,” she plays Sandra Voyter, a woman accused of murdering her husband, and trying to prove her innocence as she is put on trial.
