Matthew McConaughey at an event for Mud - Sur les rives du Mississippi (2012)
SXSW Film Review: Matthew McConaughey in ‘The Beach Bum’
Matthew McConaughey at an event for Mud - Sur les rives du Mississippi (2012)
How can you tell when a movie star is committed to being taken seriously? It’s hard to ignore when someone like Matthew McConaughey drops a ton of weight, the way he did to play an emaciated HIV patient in “Dallas Buyers Club.” It’s also impressive when such an actor swings hard in the opposite direction, packing on the pounds, thinning out his hair, and masking his prom-king choppers with a set of crooked veneers, as McConaughey did for “Gold.” Stunts like that have forced audiences to reevaluate him as more than just a superficially handsome stud.

In Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” disguised beneath stringy Hulk Hogan-style hair, cheap flip-up baseball shades, and an ugly yellow snaggletooth, McConaughey shows the same kind of commitment in the role of Moondog — pot head and unofficial poet laureate of the Florida Keys — only this time, he’s unlikely to command the same respect.

Sail Away: The Oral History of 'Yacht Rock'
Yacht Rock (2005)
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, musical artists like Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Toto, Hall and Oates, and dozens of others regularly popped up on each other's records, creating a golden era of smooth-music collaboration.

And 10 years ago (June 26th, 2005), an internet phenomenon was born. In 12 short but memorable episodes — first via the the short-film series Channel 101 and then online — Jd Ryznar, Hunter Stair, Dave Lyons, Lane Farnham and their friends redefined an era and coined a term for the sultry croonings of McDonald, Fagen, et al.

DVD Review: Devil Riders
Devil Riders

Stars: Robert Thorne, Jasmine Waltz, Bertie Higgins, J.D. Rudometkin, Debra Hopkins, Jay Wisell, Ryan Caldwell | Written by Bertie Higgins, Julian Higgins, Larry Madill | Directed by Julian Higgins

Originally released in the Us in 2009 under the less sensationalist title of Poker Run, Devil Riders is the latest in a long line of films featuring ordinary members of the public put into extraordinary situations by more “nefarious” members of society – with definite shades of The Hills Have Eyes, Race With the Devil and even (at a stretch) Cape Fear, this is a case of survival horror flick meets Easy Rider.

Devil Riders follows Robert and Allen, two suburbanites who, tired of the everyday rat race, decide it would be cool to buy motorbikes and hit the open road with their wives on a “poker run” on Route 66, Making the mistake of looking for a cheap deal the duo buy...

Woody Harrelson and Ryan Phillippe Wanted For ‘An Honest Thief’
When he isn’t nabbing a part in the unwarranted Raging Bull sequel/prequel or Peter Bogdanovich‘s upcoming John Ledger, Tom Sizemore is attempting to vamp up his career with the new crime drama An Honest Thief. The actor will both star and executive produce the project for Polimedia Films, from a script written by his brother Aaron Sizemore, Bertie Higgins and Larry Madill.

In a recent interview with (The Playlist), Sizemore stated that, ‘We’re hoping Woody [Harrelson] will be in the movie and we’re trying to get Ryan Phillippe too. Woody is 50/50 right now and we’re going to talk to Ryan next week.’ The interesting pair, if they were to accept, would be joining Thomas Jane for the film and Sizemore, of course.

The crime drama “revolves around three petty thieves living in the Boyle Heights section of L.A., who hatch a plan to rip...
