Plumbing the Depths of Horror

Dr. Josef Heiter, portrayed by Dieter Laser

Released in 2009, “The Human Centipede” isn’t your run-of-the-mill horror flick. It dives headfirst into an abyss of depravity and cruelty, conjuring a grotesque nightmare. The twisted narrative revolves around Dr. Josef Heiter, portrayed by Dieter Laser, a mad scientist who becomes consumed by a horrific experiment. He kidnaps three innocent victims,...

New Trailer for Time-Cycling Sci-Fi Film 'Variant' with Ashlynn Yennie
Image
"You don't recognize me, do you? Even though we've met a thousand times..." Breaking Glass Pictures has revealed a new trailer for a strange time travel sci-fi thriller titled Variant, which is written & directed by a filmmaker named Tony Leech (he also co-directed 2005's Hoodwinked). This hasn't been seen many places yet and doesn't look like it's really anything worth talking about, another of these junk indie sci-fi films that will be instantly forgotten upon release. Huh. When an artist struggling for purpose meets a mysterious yet charming stranger, she becomes entangled in his twisted attempts to "relive the perfect moment". It's hard to tell from this trailer - is he an android? Does he have a time machine? Are they in a simulation? Wtf is going on in this. Ashlynn Yennie stars with Dino Antoniou, Sonalii Castillo, Josh Zuckerman, and Chelsea Yakura-Kurtz. This really looks like one big mess.

The True Meaning Of The Human Centipede Movies
Image
When Tom Six's horror freakout "The Human Centipede (First Sequence)" was released in 2009, it was met with much disgust and ballyhoo. The poster boasted that the film was "100 medically accurate," something that no movie poster should ever boast.

The premise was wild and gross and repelled prudes while attracting seekers of the extreme. A mad scientist named Dr. Josef Heiter (Dieter Laser) -- clearly inspired by Josef Mengele -- kidnaps three hapless tourists and announces his dark plan while they are strapped to gurneys in his basement. Dr. Heiter intends to surgically connect the three people via their alimentary canals. He will connect one person's face to the previous person's anus, and remove tendons in their knees, forcing them to crawl. In so doing, he will create a human centipede. There is no stated reason for his experiment.

Audiences who saw "The Human Centipede" were appropriately grossed out. The...

These Human Centipede Gummies Will Spoil Your Appetite
Dieter Laser in L'Honneur perdu de Katharina Blum (1975)
There may not have been anybody on the planet asking for them, but the twisted minds at Unnecessary Inventions have designed a gummy candy inspired by the gross-out horror flick The Human Centipede. Although the taste is likely to be very pleasantly sugary and sweet, the design of the gummies is not quite so appealing. Bearing a resemblance to the vision of the mad scientist's creation in the movie, each gummy features three people attached together in a particularly crude way which is bound to spoil your appetite.

In The Human Centipede, Dieter Laser stars as mad scientist Dr. Josef Heiter. The story follows him kidnapping three tourists with the intention of developing a "human centipede" by stitching one victim's mouth to the anus of another. Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, and Akihiro Kitamura also starred as the lucky ones to be a part of this apparent "pet project." Heiter's plan is ultimately successful,...

'The Human Centipede' Trilogy: In One End, Out the Other
Photo: IFC Midnight

Disclaimer: This essay contains Spoilers for all three Human Centipede films. Also, in order to accurately discuss the films mild descriptions of extremely graphic scenes exist within, so read at your own caution and have a wonderful day!

In 2009, the horror genre was in one of its many frequent transitions. The Saw franchise was wrapping up, Hostel Part 2 landed with a redundancy, and Paranormal Activity had taken the country by storm thus cementing the evolution from "torture porn," to the bloodless Blumhouse fare that is still being released monthly to this day. The 'gore hound' faction of the horror audience was settling back into the comfortable "been there done that" zone. It seemed as though the only way we would be able to spend our Friday nights looking at blood splatter on a wall was with casual reboots of franchises long past their prime such as...

Fearnet Movie Review - Fractured
Anderson (2011)
You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)

And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

Exclusive: Adam Gierasch Talks Fractured
You’ve got to love the fact that the press junket for Adam Gierasch’s latest extreme horror film was held in a bar – in the middle of the day. (Not only was press allowed to imbibe, the open tab certainly was encouraging of vice.)

As the jukebox played and the fermented juices flowed, I sat down with Gierasch and company to ask a few questions about Fractured (formerly, Schism).

The movie’s main male stars – Callum Blue and Vinnie Jones – were not able to attend the event, but that’s okay... we had the lovely and talented actresses, Nicole Laliberte and Ashlynn Yennie, to chat up.

Laliberte plays wild sex kitten Marlena, while Yennie takes on the tamer (though no less-clothed) character of Brandy. It’s interesting to think that maybe the roles would have been reversed. “I got the script and there were two female characters. One was...

Review: Fractured is a Film With An Identity Crisis
Fractured, formerly known as Schism, isn’t really a horror movie. It has a bit of an identity crisis, much like its lead character. Other traits it shares with its lead: It has problems with women, isn’t very captivating, and fails to make much of an impression. Filmmakers Adam Gierasch (co-writer/director) and Jace Anderson (co-writer/producer) have made far better features than this, including the 2009 Night of the Demons remake. Sadly, based on their latest effort they are not progressing. Fractured is shaky and jagged and feels like something from a first-time filmmaker. Callum Blue stars as Dylan, only that’s not his real name. Since waking up from a coma of more than 2 years, he has no memory. He leads a quiet, boring life and is a cook at a restaurant in New Orleans. He sleeps with Brandy (Ashlynn Yennie) from time to time, who notes that...

Director Adam Gierasch Talks About His Dark Thriller Fractured
Don't be deceived by the cover art for Fractured and its "Vinnie Jones is out to get everyone in an effort to rescue a family member" nature. The film, out today from Seven Arts Entertainment, is actually quite Shock-worthy in the sense that it's a Jacob's Ladder/Angel Heart-esque, grisly journey into darkness. It's the latest film from director Adam Gierasch (working from a script he penned with Jace Anderson) and it stars Vinnie Jones, Callum Blue, Ashlynn Yennie and Nicole Laliberte.

Today we've got the reveal of a brand new poster for ya, which you can check out below!

L.A. Slasher stars Mischa Barton as a washed-up actress and Eric Roberts as a drugged out mayor,...
