Having pitched its high-profile animated titles to a packed Bonliue in Annecy on Wednesday, Netflix shifted over to Annecy’s Imperial Palace for a studio focus panel where the streamer teased its upcoming animation slate, including early looks at new shows from the “Minecraft,” “Clash of Clans,” Magic the Gathering” and “Ghostbusters” franchises, as well as its returning series “Blue Eye Samurai.”

A jam-packed panel also included early looks at three preschool Dr. Seuss shows, an adaptation of the French comic “Samuel,” sneak peeks of “Bojack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s follow-up series “Long Story Short,” Dan Harmon’s “Haunted Hotel” and an R-rated pencil test for the “Big Mouth” teams new series “Mating Season.”

For a while there, it seemed like Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Fixed” was going to be stuck in the pound forever.

The R-rated animated comedy, about a dog who goes on a rollicking adventure on the eve of getting neutered (think “25th Hour” meets “Lady and the Tramp”), was previewed at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Tartakovsky broke down the big beats of the story, to a rapturous crowd. And now, almost two years later, it’s finally coming out.

TheWrap can exclusively reveal that “Fixed” will be released by Netflix globally on Aug. 13, 2025 in 190 countries and over 300 million households. We spoke with Tartakovsky exclusively about what happened with “Fixed” now that it has finally been adopted.

But between January and June 2023, seasons of animated originals Sonic Prime, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, My Dad the Bounty Hunter and The Creature Cases also ranked among the 500 most-viewed series (out of 18,000), as did acquisitions like Paw Patrol, CoComelon, Pj Masks and Peppa Pig.

And while much of the streamer’s most popular animated content came from its kids and family programming, the report reveals new and previously released seasons of adult animation and anime entries like Castlevania, Love, Death & Robots, Bee and Puppycat, Disenchantment, Big Mouth, and Skull Island were among the top 22 percent of watched titles.

The Terminator is getting an anime series on Netflix from the writer of The Batman.

Originally announced back in 2021, the all-new “Terminator: The Anime Series” is coming soon to Netflix, and a first-look teaser was debuted out of “Geeked Week” this afternoon.

Netflix has recruited HBO Max’s Billy Wee and Disney’s Maggie Malone while also promoting one internal exec as the streaming giant has expanded its animation ranks in the wake of Mike Moon’s exit.

Wee, who had served as senior vp comedy and animation at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed HBO Max, will serve as director of adult animation comedy series. Jermaine Turner, who joined Netflix in 2020, has been promoted to director of adult animation action series. Together, Wee and Turner will oversee all adult animated comedy series and action series, respectively. Both will be based in L.A. and report to John Derderian, vp animation series. Together, they will fill the void created by Moon on the TV side.

Netflix has sealed a new three-year deal with Brutus Pink, which extends their relationship with the animation production company behind “Big Mouth” and its new companion series “Human Resources.” The extension will keep Brutus Pink, which is run by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, developing and producing new animated projects for Netflix through 2026.

“Brutus Pink is thrilled to be continuing at Netflix, which has been our creative home for seven years,” Levin said in a statement. “We’re hopeful this means we get to keep the ‘Con Air’ DVD that’s been sitting on Nick’s coffee table in a red envelope since 2006.”

Exclusive: After announcing its acquisition of the Australian animation studio Animal Logic during yesterday’s earnings call, Deadline has learned that Netflix is making internal moves that will streamline its coterie of executives who’ll steer the Film Animation division.

Karen Toliver, VP Animation Film, is being promoted to lead the Animation Film team. With that change, Melissa Cobb will move from her role as VP Animation Film but will stay on with Netflix as a producer. Cobb joined the company four years ago and to led the animation team and since then has built the studio from the ground up, attracting filmmakers and delivering a diverse slate of ani films so far.

Also transitioning is Gregg Taylor, the VP Animation Film who’ll also become a producer. He too has been there four years, helping to build the creative team and oversee and shepherd the film slates, most recently The Sea Beast.

A slew of upcoming kids animated series will make their debut on Netflix, including Sonic Prime, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, Daniel Spellbound and We Lost Our Human.

Netflix is developing an anime-style “Terminator” series, TheWrap has confirmed.

Netflix will team up with Skydance on the series, which will be executive produced and run by “The Batman” co-writer Mattson Tomlin. Skydance holds the rights to the James Cameron-created franchise, which launched with 1984’s “The Terminator” and most recently saw the theatrical release of “Terminator: Dark Fate” in 2019.

Production I.G, the Japanese anime studio behind such titles as “Ghost in the Shell” and “B: The Beginning,” will produce in partnership with Netflix and Skydance.

As the project is still in the early stages, plot details are being kept under wraps. Netflix has partnered with Skydance on the series, with Skydance having produced the last two “Terminator” films. The series is produced in partnership with Production I.G , who Netflix has had a production line deal with since 2018. Production I.G’s past anime credits include “Ghost in the Shell,” “B: The Beginning,” and “Eden of the East.”

Netflix’s animated World War II drama “The Liberator” follows the story of Army officer Felix Sparks and his unit, the 3rd Battalion of the 157th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Division, nicknamed the “Thunderbirds,” which spent an unprecedented 500 days in combat. But the path to getting “The Liberator” made was almost as adventurous.

Along the way, “The Liberator” went from being an 8-hour live-action series for the History channel to becoming a 4-episode unique animated experiment for Netflix. With the amount of bumps in the road “The Liberator” faced, most projects would have languished in development hell. Following the exit of several top executives, Netflix’s head of global television Bela Bajaria has set her new global leadership team and overhauled the streaming service’s U.S. operations under her purview, creating a new overalls team in the process.

As part of the reorganization, on the domestic side, Brian Wright is now leading overall deals, original series. Wright will lead this new team, which will work closely with high-profile pacts, including Netflix’s deals with Ryan Murphy, The Duffer Brothers and 21 Laps. Wright’s previous position heading up YA/Family series will now be consolidated into the drama and comedy teams.

Bajaria has named Peter Friedlander head of spectacle/event TV, focusing on high-concept drama series with high production values, like “The Three-Body Problem,” “Black Mirror” and “Narcos.”

A month and a half after being elevated to Head of Global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria has reorganized the streamer’s U.S. TV operation with an increased focus on tentpole shows and getting the most from mega overall deals. The realignment also enhances the portfolios of some executives on her international bench.

The U.S. streamlining includes the closing of the Young Adult/Family series department whose duties will be absorbed by the Drama and Comedy teams. The consolidation has led to the departures of fewer than 10 members of the series content team below VP level. Brian Wright, who ran the YA/family group, will now head a new Overall Deals department, while Jinny Howe and Renate Radford will lead the drama team. Meanwhile, Peter Friedlander, who led the Genre & Thrillers subsection of the drama department, will now head a new Spectacle/Event programming department that will be separate from drama and comedy.

A little more than a month after being named head of global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria has set her leadership team.

The new management structure puts all television worldwide under one umbrella, and follows a weeks-long period that saw several top programming executives leave the streamer.

“Each of the roles has greenlight power, so that approach of decentralized decision-making continues because it’s good for our members and good for the business,” Bajaria tells Variety of the new structure. “I wanted to eliminate silos and clarify the lanes, both internally and for creators, so my goal for this streamlined approach is that our priorities are clear: drama, comedy and unscripted, and the new overalls team to be led by Brian Wright.”

On Sept. 11, Netflix will premiere its first Spanish-produced original anime series “The Idhun Chronicles,” adapted from “The Resistance,” the first volumes of bestselling Ya novels from writers Laura Gallego and Andrés Carrión.

Turning on a group of resistance fighters exiled from their home world where dragons and unicorns are commonplace and magic is the law of the land, the group must bounce between Earth, Idhun and a mystical Dmz called Limbhad, while avoiding dangerous assassins and attempting to overthrow a despotic necromancer.

Animation was led from the northern Spanish city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country by a team of professionals led by Spain’s First Lady of animation Maite Ruiz de Austri, a two-time Spanish Academy Goya Award winner for best animated feature. Netflix has appointed Bruce Daitch as vice president of animation, Variety has learned. Daitch is an industry veteran, having previously served as both chief operating officer and chief financial officer of Dreamworks Animation, the maker of “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda.”

In his new role, Daitch will oversee production strategy and operations for Netflix’s global animation efforts. Kevin Smith will be spearheading a Masters of the Universe: Revelation anime series for Netflix.

After bringing She-Ra and The Princesses of Power to the streaming world, Netflix will continue to delve the He-Man extended universe for gold.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith announced at Power-Con in Anaheim on Sunday that he will be bringing an animated Masters of the Universe series called Masters of the Universe: Revelation to Netflix.

Smith, a prolific tweeter and podcaster, has intimated over the past year that he had been working on a project surrounding a major IP. His tweet promoting he and Marc Bernardin's podcast Fatman Beyond live podcast appearance at Power-Con now makes a bit more sense.

Zack Snyder and Jay Oliva have co-created an anime series for Netflix that will be set in the world of Norse mythology.

Zack Snyder, the director of big DC projects like Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, now wants to head to Asgard - but not Marvel's version of Asgard.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder is teaming with his Justice League producing partner Jay Oliva to bring an anime based on Norse mythology to Netflix. Snyder will exec produce the series while Oliva will serve as showrunner. Stone Quarry Animation will produce alongside Snyder's wife, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller.

The only information available about the content of the series thus far is that it will be "set in the world of Norse mythology." So shake off those cobwebs, Baldr, Njörðr, Fenrir, and any other god not currently tied down by IP restrictions.

The “Man of Steel” and “Justice League” director is set to co-create and executive produce an original anime series set in the world of Norse mythology for the streamer.

Jay Oliva, a prominent storyboard artist who has a long-standing creative partnership with Snyder which spans a dozen live action features including “Justice League” and “300: Rise of an Empire,” created the prospective series alongside Snyder and will serve as the showrunner, director, and executive producer.

Annecy, France — Announced at this year’s Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival, the Paris-based Gobelins School of Images and Netflix have partnered on a pair of initiatives intended to foster greater equality in animation opportunities available to students.

2019 Gobelins graduate Claire Matz has been selected as the recipient of the first Netflix Animation Fellowship, developed to provide one Gobelins graduate per year the opportunity to relocate to Japan and work in a post-grad program alongside Netflix’s Japanese-based animation team on original anime titles.

Inspired by the energy the student participants bring to Annecy, the selected participant will be announced annually at the festival.

The Russo Brothers are bringing the legendary Magic: The Gathering universe to Netflix in the form of an animated series.

The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame) are working with Netflix to create a new animated series based on the popular Wizards of the Coast card game, Magic the Gathering.

The Russos are not writing or directing the project. Instead, they will serve as producers who will reportedly creatively oversee the development of this project. Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina are writing the series (on top of serving as co-executive producers), and Yoriaki Mochizuki will serve as supervising director and co-executive producer.

Netflix notes that some of the people working on this series have collectively worked on previous projects like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Batman: The Animated Series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Firefly, and Agent Carter.

After 26 years of supernatural success at retail, the tabletop trading-card game called “Magic: The Gathering” is getting its first Hollywood screen adaptation: Netflix has just announced an animated original series called Magic:The Gathering from executive producers Joe & Anthony Russo, the co-directors of Avengers: Endgame.

The Russos will partner with both Hasbro, the Rhode Island-based toymaker, and Wizards of the Coast, the Seattle outfit that publishes both the Magic card game and Dungeons & Dragons, the classic 1970s game-changer. Hasbro has owned Wizards of the West Coast since 1999.

The war for market share in Japan’s streaming market is being waged on the anime battlefield. In March, telco giant Ntt Docomo announced the fixed-rate Disney Deluxe package that will include titles from Disney, Pixar and Marvel. The move closely followed an announcement by Netflix, which launched in Japan in 2015, about partnerships with anime studios Anima, Sublimation and David Production.

“Particularly for anime, our aim has been to become the most compelling and attractive home for creators, production studios and fans,” says John Derderian, director, Japan and anime, Netflix. “The company is committed to increasing our investment in anime as the audience for the content grows on the service — and we believe there is a lot of room to grow.”

Netflix has ordered eight episodes of original anime series Gods & Heroes, set in the world of Greek mythology and featuring Jason O’Mara, Mamie Gummer and Chris Diamantopoulos, among others, in the voice cast.

The series (see the new poster below), from Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, chronicles the illegitimate son of Zeus, a young man tasked with saving heaven and earth despite the interference of a vengeful goddess and her monstrous forces.

“In Gods & Heroes we wanted to tell a wholly original story set in the beloved world of Greek mythology,” said creators Vlas and Charley Parlapanides in a statement. “We are thankful for such an amazing cast and for such great creative partners at Netflix and Powerhouse Animation, who continue to push the envelope and expand the anime genre in a manner we had only dreamed of.”

The Parlapanides will serve as writers and executive producers.
