Tina Romero, daughter of zombie godfather George A. Romero, will be in attendance for the Southeast US premiere of her undead drag spectacle Queens of the Dead. This night of the living glam will be paired with a fabulous live drag performance that’s guaranteed to slay and leave audiences gagging… for more brains! The Popcorn Frights Film Festival is back with its eleventh this year, both in-person and virtually, from August 7-17. The Southeast’s largest genre celebration announces its second wave of programming this morning, from new premieres to repertory screening classics.

The second wave highlights include a screening of Tina Romero’s Queens of the Dead. The filmmaker is also presenting a special 40th Anniversary 4K Restoration of her father’s seminal zombie classic Day of the Dead, bringing the zombies back to Florida soil where it was originally shot.

Horror legend Dee Wallace joins the party for a howl-worthy triple-bill, appearing in-person to introduce three of her all-time cult classics hits: Stephen King’s Cujo, Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes, and Joe Dante’s The Howling, newly restored in 4K. She joins previously announced guests Barbara Crampton, Lloyd Kaufman, and Linnea Quigley.

The director of the 2020 slasher Initiation is back this year with The Mannequin, and Deadline shares a first look while announcing that Jackrabbit Media will release the film in the U.S.

The film is said to be “a tense and stylish new take on possession horror.” Deadline notes, “The company will introduce the title to international buyers at this week’s Cannes market.”

From writer and director John Berardo, “The film follows Liana Rojas (Isabella Gomez), who discovers the downtown Los Angeles building where her sister died is haunted by the ghost of a mutilation-obsessed killer. Exclusive: Isabella Gomez is set to star in the indie horror film The Mannequin, from writer-director John Berardo (Initiation).

The project falls under the SAG-AFTRA Ultra Low Budget Agreement and was just added to the list of projects receiving an interim agreement from the guild. Production will begin in Los Angeles next week.

The Mannequin follows Liana Rojas (Gomez), a creatively starved stylist assistant who discovers the historical downtown Los Angeles building where her sister mysteriously died is haunted by a serial killer who brutally murdered and dismembered his victims there half a century earlier. Screamfest is celebrating its 20th anniversary of screening the latest and greatest genre cinema and they've announced their lineup of features and shorts for this year's fest. The Screamfest Horror Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films that will be featured at the 20th annual drive-in edition. Kicking off the fest, which runs from October 6-15, is Books of Blood, the Hulu original film based on Clive Barker’s horror anthology.

From director Brannon Braga and executive producer Seth MacFarlane, Books of Blood is slated to premiere on the streamer on October 7. Starring Britt Robertson, Anna Friel, Rafi Gavron, and Yul Vazquez, the pic takes a journey into uncharted and forbidden territory through three tales tangled in space and time.

Genre festival to open with ‘Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula’.

South Korean zombie thriller Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula will open UK genre festival FrightFest on October 22 ahead of its UK release by Studiocanal on November 6.

The festival will host 34 features in central London from October 22-25 and has secured seven world premieres and two European premieres.

It will close with the world premiere of US horror Held, directed by Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff, the filmmaking duo behind The Gallows franchise.

Next month, the 2020 SXSW Film Festival kicks off in Austin, Texas, and this week, we finally have a look at the fest’s killer Midnighter slate, which includes one of this writer’s favorite films from Sundance, Natalie Erika James’ Relic. The 2020 lineup also features another Sundance 2020 title, Run Sweetheart Run, as well the latest from filmmaker Natasha Kermani (who recently helmed Imitation Girl), entitled Lucky, and The Void co-director Steven Kostanski’s latest gore-fest, PG (Psycho Goreman).

The annual South by Southwest Conference and Festival is known for having a lineup of programming that makes Austin bust at the seams — and its slate for the 27th edition of the film festival isn’t any different. After already unveiling its initial roster of films, SXSW has now announced its lineup of Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Episodic Pilots, Special Events and more.

SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite among festival-goers as it includes weird, electric, and sometimes terrifying selection of titles. Featuring 10 genre films, the Midnighters slate includes an array of dark comedies, thrillers, sci-fi, mystery and slasher pics with a mix of established and first-time filmmakers. With Midnighters and addition of Festival Favorites as well as 10 additional film, the SXSW Film Festival now has a robust 135 total features on its slate.

After unveiling its first lineup of feature film offerings last month, the SXSW Film Festival is rolling out more additions to its 2020 program. The annual Texas festival has already announced its features and episodic premieres, and now those picks are joined by Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, and Special Events, plus late-addition features and the full list of Episodic Pilot Competition shows.

This year’s program has 135 Feature Films, including 99 world premieres, nine North American premieres, five U.S. Premieres, 75 films from first-time filmmakers, and 119 short films. The lineup also features music videos, episodic premieres, pilots, special events, and Vr projects.

Today’s announcement sees additions to nearly every section of the feature film lineup, including the popular Midnighters section.
