Jennifer Lopez's hunt for an Oscar might finally be coming to a close. After earning rave reviews at its Sundance Film Festival premiere, the movie-musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, executive produced and starring J.Lo as the titular character, has just slotted a Fall 2025 release.

Per Deadline, Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and Ld Entertainment have snagged the Kiss of the Spider Woman's North American release rights following its warm reception. Bill Condon directs and pens the Lopez vehicle, adapted from the Fred Kander and Fred Ebb musical of the same name. Set in the 1980s, the film follows Argentine prisoners swapping fantasies and stories—many performed by the eponymous Spider Woman (aka Ingrid/Aurora)— barely surviving under the nation's dictatorship.

The story has taken on many forms over the years. The original 1976 Kiss of the Spider Woman novel by Manuel Puig predates the musical concept. The songless version...

‘Magazine Dreams’ Fails To Flex, ‘October 8’ A Standout With ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ – Specialty Box Office
Image
Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors is eyeing an estimated $700k weekend in 815 theaters, solid in NY, LA and a handful of urban markets but below the $1 million Deadline hears the distributor had initially been hoping for given strong engagement online with the film, which has a 91% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (81% with critics).

The opening weekend miss for what was a very buzzy Sundance title back in 2023 about a troubled but ambitious bodybuilder follows controversy around its star and comes at a tough time for indie films in general. In the months after the film premiered in Park City, Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment against an ex-girlfriend.

Briarcliff’s documentary October 8 is an upside surprise with a projected $250k weekend at 113 theaters — up 7% from last weekend’s opening at 14 few theaters. AMC Lincoln Square and Century City are top grossers for the...

As ‘Hard Truths’, ‘The Last Showgirl’ Open Amid L.A. Wildfires, Distributor Calls Debut “The Definition Of Mixed Emotions” – Specialty Preview
Image
Wildfires rampaging through Los Angeles means moviegoing won’t be top of mind for Angelenos. Some top indies are opening or holding over in L.A. theaters, one of the nation’s key movie markets, amid uneven fire patterns that have scorched and flattened huge areas of the city but left others untouched.

“In West Hollywood, the sun is shining. You can’t really tell. Except for some ash that falls on your car, you can’t really tell what’s happening,” says Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions, which is releasing Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl starring Pamela Anderson in moderate release on 870 screens nationwide, including 20+ L.A. theaters.

“I have mixed emotions opening in the middle of all this. It’s been such a great run with Pamela and Gia and Jamie Lee [Curtis] and the whole group. It’s hard to celebrate. We canceled the premiere on Thursday.

Awards Buzz Buoys Indies: Pamela Anderson Steps Out In ‘The Last Showgirl’, Audiences Bond With Daniel Craig-Led ‘Queer’ – Specialty Box Office
Image
Awards kudos, critics’ lists, varied nominations and wins are boosting indie film standouts this weekend. The market is crowded as indies vie with each other, studio tentpoles and fare from Pusha: The Rule – Part 2 and the remastered Daft Punk & Leiji Matsumoto: Interstella 5555. But many specialty distributors are more upbeat now than at any point this year.

The Last Showgirl from Roadside Attractions debuted at $50.3k on one screen. It’s a one-week Academy-qualifying run for the contender by Gia Coppola and starring Pamela Anderson, now a Golden Globe nominee. Both showed up for Q&As at LA’s AMC Century City, helping push the story of a fading Vegas showgirl to the fifth best per-screen opening of the year.

The three-day number also marks Roadside’s second-highest opening PSA in its 20-year history. The distributor said the run featured sellout screenings on both Friday and Saturday across select...

Sundance Doc ‘Beyond Utopia’ Scores U.S. Theatrical Release From Fathom Events and Roadside Attractions (Exclusive)
Image
Fathom Events and Roadside Attractions are teaming up to release Madeleine Gavin’s Sundance award-winning documentary “Beyond Utopia.”

The film takes viewers on a harrowing journey as one family risks everything to escape from North Korea. The pact comes after the film made its world premiere in the U.S. documentary competition section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the doc audience award.

While the film attracted plenty of interest from distribution companies following its debut in Park City, the market slowdown has led to deals taking longer than usual to nail down.

Roadside acquired domestic rights to “Beyond Utopia” and will release the film theatrically in select markets later this fall, thereby qualifying the docu for Oscar consideration. Fathom Events will release the film in more than 600 theaters nationwide during a special two-night only event on Oct. 23-24.

Using hidden camera footage, Gavin tells the...
