David Zaslav was Behind the Cancellation of a Major Mecha Anime Revival
Image
In October 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery merged Cartoon Network Studios with Warner Bros. Animation. It was led by CEO David Zaslav, who stopped a major 2000s animation from returning to the screens. The 2000s were a glorious era for Cartoon Network, with shows like Ben 10, Johnny Test, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Teen Titans, and more.

Another fan favorite show was Megas Xlr, an animated parody of mecha anime, which aired from 2004-2005, leaving a crater-sized impact on the memories of fans. The show’s short run was due to low TV ratings and was eventually written off as a tax loss. However, the impact of the animation stayed with fans forever, even leading to an attempt at its revival.

Toonami’s Fan-Favorite Mecha Anime Tribute Was Almost Brought Back Until Wbd’s New CEO Killed It
Image
Toonami's beloved but forgotten love letter to anime and mecha was nearly revived after 21 years. However, the merger between Discovery and Warner Bros., led by new CEO David Zaslav, stopped the animated revival from happening.

The YouTube channel Secret Galaxy uploaded a new video paying tribute to Megas Xlr, Cartoon Network's loving anime mecha parody from the early 2000s. The series, created by Jody Schaeffer and George Krstic, ran for two seasons on Toonami from May 1, 2004, to Jan. 15, 2005. The short-lived run of 26 episodes was due to low TV ratings, which led to the show being "written off as a tax loss," according to Krstic in a 2014 interview. However, according to one of its co-creators, Megas Xlr was on the verge of a revival until the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery stepped in.

Paramount Reportedly Wants To Make A Transformers: War For Cybertron Movie
According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us a Witcher prequel show is in the works and National Treasure 3 is in development, both of which were correct – Paramount is looking to develop a new Transformers movie based on Netflix series War for Cybertron. Supposedly, the company wants to produce a live-action film that would very much remain its own standalone project and not be connected to the in-development franchise reboot or anything else coming down the pipeline.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the source material – which is quite possible, as the Transformers mythos is incredibly dense and complex – War for Cybertron is a Netflix animated series based on Hasbro’s popular line of toys that first premiered in July 2020 after a short delay thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Produced by Rooster Teeth in conjunction with both Allspark Animation and Polygon Pictures,...

Series, Pilots, and Projects In Development Abound at Syfy’s 2013 Upfront Presentation
As we’ve been reporting, Syfy had its Upfront presentation to potential advertisers Wednesday night, and they spent yesterday issuing press releases. It’s a good thing they held the event at a pier, as there is a boatload of information included in the summary press release below. We made sure to get it posted before the weekend, since it will take you the entire weekend to absorb it all.

Some of it is information we’ve already posted, like the Ringworld and Childhood’s End development and the High Moon pilot production, some of it we posted about fairly recently, like Ronald D. Moore‘s Helix, some of it we haven’t heard about in quite some time, like Orion, Proof, and Dominion, and some, like the nonscripted shows, the anthology, and some of the projects announced, are news to us.

You’ll also see ratings info and other...

Syfy Zeros in on a Zombie Comedy and Other New Genre Programming
"Dead boys, dead boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when Zeros come for you?" I do hope those lyrics are included in the opening theme song for "Zeros", one of the seven newly announced programs Syfy has in development. If zombies don't tickle your fancy, then Kevin Sorbo back fighting mythological monsters and Lee Majors getting all bionic again might.

Of greatest interest to horror fans is going to be the zombedy "Zeros". Here's how Syfy's press release describes the show.

In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Season Two—“Holocron Heist” & “Cargo of Doom” Season Premiere Review
Watching The Clone Wars carries an element of Greek tragedy to it: The average Star Wars fan cannot help but feel a slight twist in the gut while viewing the adventures of characters for whom the future is already written. And not too pleasantly, either.

But the beauty of being a science fiction fan has always been the requirement of that magical quality known as “suspension of disbelief.” The Star Wars stories are the popular, modern, American version of Norse mythology, and the audience knows full well that the Gods must eventually fall. But before Gotterdammerung (or Ragnarok if you wish) occurs, we get the siren song of high adventure.

And so it is with the opening of The Clone Wars’ second season two-part premiere “Rise of the Bounty Hunters” (which aired October 2 on Cartoon Network). On the orders of Darth Sidious, Cad Bane infiltrates the Jedi Temple and steals a Holocron.

Cartoon animates 5 series
NEW YORK -- The Cartoon Network announced that it will launch five new series during its 2004 schedule at its annual showcase of programming Wednesday night. "By greenlighting more new shows faster, ramping up production of current hits and aggressively acquiring new series, we'll have twice the amount of new programming on our air this year than we did in 2002," said Jim Samples, Cartoon Network's executive vp and general manager, who last year at the same meeting admitted that new series needed to be ramped up. The 500 new half-hours of content will include five new animated series, new episodes of returning original series and new acquisitions, Samples said. Megas XLR, a new action-comedy series created by Jody Schaeffer and George Krstic, featuring a twentysomething grease monkey who finds a robot in a New Jersey landfill, will air on May 1.
