The Hollywood Reporter Nabs 10 SoCal Journalism Awards
Image
The Hollywood Reporter won 10 first-place awards at the 67th SoCal Journalism Awards, including two wins for best magazine feature, one for best entertainment commentary and a first-ever nod in the best headline category.

The Los Angeles Press Club handed out the awards at a ceremony held Sunday night inside the Crystal Ballroom at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The news comes on the heels of The Hollywood Reporter’s award presented by the 2025 American Society of Magazine Editors in its best cover contest. THR was awarded the best local magazine cover for its 2024 “Work Issue,” which hit newsstands on Oct. 30, 2024.

Special honorees at the ceremony were Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times and ESPN, who was presented with the Joseph M. Quinn Award for Lifetime Achievement; CNN’s Clarissa Ward, who received the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism; and actress Kim Fields,...

The Outrageous 20-Year-Old Movie That Predicted Trump’s America
Image
Turns out life doesn’t just imitate art — sometimes it borrows the script, reboots it with National Guard checkpoints and streams it live from Los Angeles. Case in point: A Day Without a Mexican, the cheeky 2004 sci-fi satire from Mexican filmmakers Sergio Arau and Yareli Arizmendi, in which California wakes up to find every person of Latino descent has vanished into a mysterious haze, leaving Angelenos panicking over who’s going to mow the lawns and run the kitchens. Two decades later, with Ice patrols chasing down undocumented workers at Home Depots and a real fog of fear spreading through the city, the movie suddenly seems less like farce and more like dark prophecy.

“Forget about what happens to the Latinos in the film,” Arizmendi, who starred in and co-wrote it with husband Arau, tells Rambling Reporter. “The point is what happens to you without them.”

Pierce Brosnan at an event for The Ghost Writer (2010)
Pierce Brosnan Supports Aaron Taylor-Johnson as James Bond Candidate
Pierce Brosnan at an event for The Ghost Writer (2010)
Pierce Brosnan has weighed in on ongoing speculation around the future of the James Bond franchise, voicing support for actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a potential replacement for Daniel Craig.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Brosnan reflected on Taylor-Johnson’s past performance and presence on set. The two previously worked together on the 2009 drama The Greatest, where Taylor-Johnson played a leading role.

“I think he would be very good,” Brosnan said. “I cast him in one of the movies I made a long time ago called The Greatest, actually. And he played ‘the greatest.’ This young man came on the set and took the space, filled the space with passion and energy.”

Brosnan added that Taylor-Johnson has the qualities necessary to take on the role of 007. “If he wished it, wanted it and got it, he would be great.”

Taylor-Johnson, 33, has appeared in a variety of projects, including Kick-Ass,...

Pierce Brosnan Gives His Blessing to Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Next Potential James Bond
Image
A retired 007 is giving his stamp of approval.

Out of all the contenders that are speculated to be filling in the shoes of the next James Bond, Pierce Brosnan has some words of encouragement for Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who he previously worked with in the 2009 drama, The Greatest.

“I think he would be very good,” Brosnan said to Yahoo Entertainment. “I cast him in one of the movies I made a long time ago called The Greatest, actually and he played ‘the Greatest.'”

The MobLand actor continued to praise Taylor-Johnson, adding, “This young man came on the set and took the space, filled the space with passion and energy. So yeah, I think if he wished it, wanted it and got it, he would be great.”

Brosnan, of course, played the iconic suave secret agent in the films Golden Eye (1995), Die Another Day 1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Tomorrow Never Dies...

‘Sunset Boulevard’ Star Nancy Olson on Its Weak Showing at Oscars ’51: “Everything Should Have Won”
Image
Nancy Olson, the last living star of Billy Wilder’s seminal Hollywood satire Sunset Boulevard, still remembers Oscar night 1951. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three.

Olson, 96, shared her recollections on a recent episode of It Happened in Hollywood, The Hollywood Reporter‘s eyewitness film history podcast.

Olson was just 22 at the time, and Sunset Boulevard was only her second picture in a seven-year contract with Paramount Pictures. The role — Betty, a studio reader with ambitions to be a screenwriter — earned her a best supporting actress nomination.

“I did not expect to win and I did not win,” Olson told host Seth Abramovitch. “I felt very rewarded being nominated and that was quite enough.”

She says she sensed her fate was sealed when she entered the Pantages Theatre and was ushered to her less-than-prime spot. “I was seated in the back, on the side,” Olson says.

The statuette,...

First Responders Get Star Treatment at Chateau Marmont

Chateau Marmont is no stranger to Hollywood luminaries — just days ago, the place was hopping with A-listers partying before the Golden Globes — but now the iconic Sunset Boulevard hotspot is welcoming some truly awe-inspiring superstars: L.A. firefighters. On Jan. 11, the hotel announced on Instagram that it would offer Lafd and Lacfd first responders two free nights at the Chateau’s private cottages, 600- to 700-square-feet poolside suites that usually start at $1,165 a night. The complimentary stays also were extended to grips, camera operators and other below-the-line guild workers who’ve been displaced by the fires (a display, perhaps, of the Chateau’s new union friendliness after its protracted labor struggles in 2022). “Given what’s been going on, I felt it was the right thing to do,” owner André Balazs tells Rambling Reporter. Not surprisingly, the response has been overwhelming; within 45 minutes of the announcement,...

My Mom’s Emmy

Melissa Rivers: TV host and daughter of Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers with her 1990 Emmy for The Joan Rivers Show, which her daughter, Melissa, saved from the fire.

Living in Los Angeles, I have been through a number of evacuations. So once I made sure we had our passports and all of that kind of stuff, I grabbed a picture of my father. I grabbed a baby picture of my son, Cooper, and some photos of me with my mom. All of the other family photos are obviously gone forever. And I grabbed a drawing that my mother did, of Cooper and I sitting on the beach one day when we were on vacation. Just a silly little sketch.

And I grabbed her Emmy because she was so proud of it. And in her entire career, it’s hard to believe she only won one [in 1990 for tt0262164 autoThe...

James Bond Gets a New Favorite in 'Challengers' Star Josh O'Connor
Image
The likes of Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill, and MCU star Idris Elba have long been favorites for the role of the next James Bond. But a new challenger has now emerged, with The Hollywood Reporter predicting that The Crown and God’s Own Country star Josh O'Connor will be chosen by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to don a tuxedo as 007.

The prediction comes as part of a whole host of other forecasts about 2025 at the movies, with the outlet’s Seth Abramovitch reasoning that O’Connor will be chosen as “Bond series producer Barbara Broccoli has always led from the gut, not caved to popular opinion,” pointing out that Daniel Craig was a controversial choice at the time.

“2025 will thus be the year we finally learn the identity of the new James Bond, and it will not be Taylor-Johnson. It...

Netflix Hit With Class Action Lawsuit Over Streaming Issues on Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Bout
Image
Netflix is facing a proposed class action from subscribers who were plagued by persistent buffering and freezing glitches that caused them to miss parts of the boxing spectacle between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.

A Florida resident alleges Netflix was “woefully ill-prepared” for the nine-figure global audience that tuned in to the bout. The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages on behalf of subscribers who had trouble watching the fight, brings claims for breach of contract and violations of Florida laws surrounding deceptive trade practices and consumer protection.

“Netflix customers experienced massive streaming issues and should have known better because it’s happened before,” states the complaint, filed on Monday in Florida state court.

For Netflix, which declined to comment, the fight emerged as the most viewed sporting event ever on the platform, with 108 million people watching worldwide, according to U.S. viewing tallies from analytics company TVision and Netflix’s first-party data.

The Reason Your Agent Isn’t Calling You Back? Pickleball

If you happened to be passing through Calabasas and heard a loud “twocking” sound, we can explain. On Nov. 16, a slew of Hollywood’s most powerful players (and, in this case, we’re using the word literally) assembled on the courts of the Calabasas Pickleball Club for the Entertainment Pickleball League’s championship tourney. Although they began just a few months ago, Epl’s games are quickly shaping up to be Hollywood’s biggest draw this side of the Academy Gala, with agents and execs from just about every entertainment company forming squads — most with pun-filled names like Disney’s Monster Dinks, NBCUni’s Dis-Pickleball Me and CAA’s Dill Makers — to participate. “We started with four teams,” says Zee Batal, the TV producer who launched the league in late

September with reality TV showrunner Erica Hanson. “Now we have eight.

Emile Hirsch Was Told to “Gain the Weight” to Play John Belushi Before Planned Biopic Even Had Funding
Image
Would you gain 100 pounds in the hopes of landing a role?

That was the career conundrum faced by Emile Hirsch, who joined THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast to relive the making of his 2007 breakout film, Into the Wild.

But another film — a planned biopic of comedian John Belushi, in which Hirsch was chosen to play the early Saturday Night Live star — came up in conversation.

In 2013, Hirsch became attached to the lead role in the indie biopic. The funding never came together, and the project fell apart.

“I was a little bit torn [about signing on],” Hirsch, 39, recalls. “I had a conversation with the director at one point, and he was talking about the weight gain. This is how stupid this guy was: He was like, ‘Just gain the weight and then we’ll make the movie.’

“And I’m like, ‘Gain the weight and then we’ll make the movie?...

Why Was Barry Diller’s Memoir Pulled From Amazon?
Image
Where in the World Is Diller’s Memoir?

In late July, when Barry Diller’s forthcoming memoir, Who Knew, suddenly disappeared from Amazon — after it had popped up for presales ahead of a planned fall release — it raised all sorts of eyebrows. Had the book’s publisher, Knopf, pulled the project for some reason? Had there been an issue with Amazon (and Target, too, which also was taking preorders)? Was the tome even real in the first place? After all, Knopf hadn’t announced anything about a book deal with Diller, despite an early leak to Page Six. The answer, it turns out, is none of the above. Sources close to the project tell Rambling Reporter that it was Diller himself who delayed publication. After sending early copies to a close circle of friends for comments, the 82-year-old media mogul turned memoirist decided the manuscript needed some last-minute noodling. He...

Shelley Duvall, ‘The Shining’ and ‘Nashville’ Star, Dies at 75
Image
Shelley Duvall, the big-eyed, waifish performer who won the Cannes actress award for Robert Altman’s “3 Women” and endured Stanley Kubrick’s intense directing techniques to star in “The Shining,” died Thursday in Blanco, Texas, Variety confirmed with her partner Dan Gilroy. She was 75.

Duvall was known for working with director Altman, who cast her in “Brewster McCloud” as her first screen role. She went on to appear in his films “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” and “Thieves Like Us” before starring as part of the ensemble cast of “Nashville” in 1975. After gaining attention in “Nashville,” Altman cast her in “Buffalo Bill and the Indians,” then gave her unusual screen presence a chance to shine in “3 Women,” for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress as well as a BAFTA nomination.

Also in 1977, Duvall played a Rolling Stone journalist in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,...

John Mulaney Says Hollywood Wasn’t Responsible for His Drug Addiction
Image
Contrary to the common story of celebrity drug addiction, stand-up comedy superstar John Mulaney says that a life in show business didn’t exacerbate his past problems with substance abuse. All fame did for Mulaney’s drug addiction was make his intervention a star-studded affair.

Before Mulaney’s personal life was front-page entertainment news and his behind-the-scenes struggle with heavy drug use were common knowledge, the legendary Saturday Night Live writer and Emmy-winning stand-up explicitly addressed his past problems with alcohol in his breakout hit special John Mulaney: New in Town. “That surprises a lot of audiences because I don't look like someone who used to do anything,” Mulaney commented after revealing that he had to quit drinking after too many binges, “I look like I was just sitting in a room in a chair eating saltines for like 28 years and then I walked right out here.”

Eight years later,...

Newsflash! Nicholas Galitzine Is Not a Real Royal
Image
Nicholas Galitzine: The Artist Formerly Known as a Prince?

He’s played Cinderella’s Prince opposite Camila Cabello, the Prince of England in Red, White & Royal Blue and next will play He-Man, Prince Adam of Eternia, in Masters of the Universe. But is Hollywood’s latest “It” boy an actual prince? There has been a ton of speculation in the press that Nicholas Galitzine, 29, descends from a royal bloodline — specifically Russia’s House of Golitsyn (an alternate spelling of his surname), a noble family whose members were executed and exiled during the Russian Revolution. And many Galitzines did wind up in London, where Nick was eventually born in 1994. Unfortunately, that’s where the fairy tale ends. THR has unearthed documentation confirming that Nick’s paternal grandfather legally changed his name to Edward Ralph Alexander Galitzine on April 9, 1956. His birth name? Edward Ralph Alexander Tier. And while Nick’s financier father,...

Stockard Channing Recalls a Lovelorn Will Smith on ‘Six Degrees’ Set: “I Felt Very Motherly Towards Him”
Image
Will Smith may have fallen in love with Stockard Channing on the set of 1993’s Six Degrees of Separation, but Channing only felt “motherly” to the rising star, who was 23 and a newly married, first-time father at the time.

Channing — who earned an Oscar nomination playing a New York socialite who connects with a young con artist played by Smith in the film — opened up about working with the rising star in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast.

“He made a lot [of money] from his music, or even Fresh Prince [of Bel-Air],” Channing said. “Because I remember we talked about it.” Despite his massive success in music and TV at a young age, “there was no big shot stuff at all” about Smith, she said.

“He had a real survival instinct in him,” Channing added, “which was completely perfect for the part. [There was a] genuine charm and a lovely sweetness about him.

Rory Kennedy on Decision to Denounce Brother Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Presidential Campaign: “I Felt Compelled to Speak Out, Which I Didn’t Want to Do”
Image
Last October, White House hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a decision to switch parties in his presidential bid by exiting the Democratic party and running as a third-party Independent. The move was quickly denounced by members of his own family, including Oscar-nominated documentarian Rory Kennedy, who joined her siblings in posting a family statement.

“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment. Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country,” read the Instagram post signed by Rory Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy II and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a group that totals four of the 11 children shared by Ethel and Robert Kennedy.

The 40(ish) Most Important People in Podcasting in 2023
Image
Written by Seth Abramovitch, Gary Baum, Kirsten Chuba, Mia Galuppo, Chris Gardner, James Hibberd, Caitlin Huston, Rebecca Keegan, Mikey O’Connell, Sydney Odman, Lacey Rose, Julian Sancton, Alex Weprin and Abbey White. Additional reporting by J. Clara Chan.

It is the best of times and the worst of times for podcasting. In 2023, the industry put the brakes on a period of lavish spending and nine-digit megadeals and — much as its streaming counterparts did last year — followed largesse with austerity. Facing challenges surrounding the advertising model, macroeconomic concerns and a post-pandemic slowdown, some of the biggest players, including Spotify, Vox Media and NPR, announced mass layoffs. Many others — like SiriusXM and Amazon — cut their podcast budgets significantly. And yet, unlike in other struggling segments of the entertainment business, audiences are continuing to grow with no ceiling in sight. According to an analysis by Edison Research, “Podcasting is ‘back,’ reaching the highest numbers ever,...

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” a statement read. “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

The 75 Most Powerful People in Kids’ Entertainment
Image
In terms of the sheer number of entertainment options, there’s never been a better time to be a kid. But it’s also never been more work.

The average 8-year-old in 2013 could turn on one of a few TV channels and park there for an hour or two, and maybe watch a few movies or shows on Netflix or Hulu (in the not-very-likely event their families had an account). YouTube was for teenagers and adults.

A decade later, an 8-year-old can choose from hundreds of titles across a host of streaming platforms and thousands of YouTube channels — as well as an age-protected YouTube Kids app — to say nothing of TikTok and other social media. The shift to streaming is even more pronounced among kids and teenagers than it is in adults: Where a popular network or cable show can still draw maybe half a million adults ages 18-34, no...

The Shining: What Happened to Shelley Duvall on the Set?
Image
Still to this day, The Shining is thought of as one of the most spine-chilling and iconic horror movies within the past several decades. Its premise paints a creepy scene of a family cloistered in a shadow-filled hotel as torrential snow collects outside. Besides its horrifying internal centering around familial trauma, the other more external and ethereal elements following the Torrance family help to drive home its dreary messages. While the movie is one of the most powerful interpretations of author Stephen King's heap of horror stories, the film's internal fundamentals contain even darker goings-on than audiences might realize at first.

Shelley Duvall, whom audiences often remember in the role of Wendy Torrance, fell victim to some unfortunate and unnecessary experiences during the filmmaking process. Sadly, these took their toll on her serene yet continually bright identity. The several ways in which the making of The Shining negatively affected...

In the closing moments of the third and final installment of the new Discovery+ docuseries House of Hammer, Casey Hammer reads a letter she recently received from her brother, Michael, the father of actor Armie Hammer.

“If you choose to continue pretending that the stories you have invented are the truth, I will have no choice other than to pursue every legal remedy to set the record straight,” states the letter before it changes course. “Despite all the pain your fabrications have causes, you share the blood running through my veins. You are still my family and I wish you nothing but the best.”

The Hammer bloodline is the subject of the now streaming House of Hammer, and directors Elli Hakami and Julian P. Hobbs use the sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Armie as a jumping-off point to explore all facets of the...

COVID-19 (2020)
The World’s 25 Best Drama Schools From L.A. to London, the next generation of screen and stage talent is learning the craft at these institutions By Seth Abramovitch
COVID-19 (2020)
If Covid-19 sounded the death knell for theater and production, it didn’t manage to snuff out acting schools, many of which were quick to adapt (Zoom-based writing collaborations! Radio plays!) to the changing landscape. With the light now at the end of the proverbial tunnel, those schools are deftly mapping out the path back into the classroom. (Columbia is even throwing in a free year.) What the pandemic year has proven is that the appetite for content — and the actors necessary to bring it to life — has never been stronger. As training grounds brace for a ...

Shelley Duvall Recalls Troubling ‘Dr. Phil’ Interview, Finding Out Who He Was ‘the Hard Way’
Image
A great gift for many film fans earlier this week was a wide-ranging profile of reclusive former actress Shelley Duvall in The Hollywood Reporter, which is the first we’ve heard publicly from her since her disturbing 2016 “Dr. Phil” interview. In the segment, the show painted Duvall as someone visibly battling distressing mental illness and paranoid fantasies. In many ways, the THR piece offers redemption for Duvall, who lives in Texas with her partner Dan Gilroy, and prefers to stay outside the limelight.

“I only knew that it didn’t feel right for McGraw’s insensitive sideshow to be the final word on her legacy,” Seth Abramovitch, who wrote the piece, said in the article.

In the story, Duvall touches on her experience with the “Dr. Phil” team. “I found out the kind of person he is the hard way,” Duvall said. “My mother didn’t like him, either. A lot of people,...

Whatever Happened To Shelley Duvall?
Image
By Lee Pfeiffer

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Shelley Duvall was an acclaimed and sought-after star. She defied the tradition of having to be a sex symbol in order to achieve major stardom. In fact, it was Duvall's "girl next door" looks and persona that ingratiated her to both audiences and critics. She was championed by director Robert Altman and graduated from small parts to major roles in his films. Her star burned brightly but flamed out quickly following starring roles in Altman's ill-fated "Popeye" and Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", which afforded the role movie lovers most remember her for. Duvall began appearing in undistinguished films and eventually just vanished from sight, facing mental health and financial problems and entering self-imposed retirement from the film industry. In fact, Duvall vanished so thoroughly that few people even knew that she ended up moving to a rural community in Texas...

Shelley Duvall Reflects on The Shining and Working with Stanley Kubrick
Image
Hollywood legend Shelley Duvall is a bit of a recluse these days, but the star of The Shining and many other classic movies opened up about her life and career in a new interview. The last time most of us saw Duvall, she was featured in a highly-condemned episode of Dr. Phil that was criticized for taking advantage of the retired actress. Speaking with Seth Abramovitch at The Hollywood Reporter, Duvall has reemerged with an interview that's a must-read for all of her fans.

Famously, Stanley Kubrick was a taxing filmmaker to work with, known for being a perfectionist and requiring a ridiculous amount of takes for different scenes. Rumor is he was particularly hard on Duvall so her performance as a terrified housewife would be more believable. To see how the shoot actually was from Shelley's viewpoint, the actress admitted that shooting The Shining really was rather difficult based...
