Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) – Awfully Good Horror Movies
Fede Alvarez
A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and with director Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus now in theatres, we have decided to celebrate by taking a look back at one of the least popular entries in the Alien franchise, the crossover sequel Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (watch it Here). You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!

Directed by the Brothers Strause from a screenplay by Shane Salerno, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem has the following synopsis: Residents of Gunnison, Colorado, are caught up in the crossfire when two deadly extraterrestrial species bring their longstanding conflict to Earth. On the one side, nearly indestructible Aliens; on the other, a lone Predator whose mission is to wipe out all traces of the Alien infestation from Earth, no matter who gets in the way.

The film stars Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz,...

15 Years Later, I Still Believe This Canceled CBS Slasher Deserves A Sequel
Image
Harper's Island was canceled after one season, but its unique approach to a slasher series still resonates 15 years later. The series thrived on suspense and red herrings, boasting a large cast of suspects and engaging plot twists. Despite being ahead of its time, Harper's Island could have been a massive hit with better marketing and a different network placement.

CBS canceled beloved slasher series Harper's Island after a single season, but it still holds a special place in my heart 15 years later because it deserves a resurrection. Slasher series rarely work because sustaining viewer interest week-to-week is tough when answers aren't forthcoming. A slasher series needs convincing kills and plots that can be told over a longer arc and offer insight into the characters and their machinations. This particular series excelled because it had 25 suspects from the get-go, meaning there was no shortage of drama.

The series benefited from a picturesque setting,...

All 9 Flash Gordon Movies & TV Shows, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Flash Gordon (1980) is the best version, capturing the comic's bombastic tone with visually stunning performances. Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1938) introduces an interesting new villain and entertaining despite rushed production. Flash Gordon (2007-2008) modernizes poorly, receiving initial negative reviews for lackluster execution.

Debuting in 1934, Flash Gordon quickly became a popular fixture of American comic strips. However, the character's most important influence was felt off the page, as a trio of serials based on the character's adventures quickly became some of the earliest examples of the cinematic sci-fi genre. This influence could be felt throughout the genre and was a personal favorite of George Lucas, leading it to become a key influence on Star Wars.

The story of dashing college athlete Flash and his companions Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov, as they find themselves facing off with the merciless (and problematically dated) Emperor Ming on the planet of Mongo, has...

Alexz Johnson, Kris Lemche, Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe, Ryan Merriman, Chelan Simmons, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gina Holden, Sam Easton, Jesse Moss, Texas Battle, Dylan Basu, and Alberto Ghisi in Destination finale 3 (2006)
A new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at the 2006 release Final Destination 3 (watch it Here) – a movie that wasn’t as popular as the previous two entries in the franchise, but at least it was more well-received than the fourth movie was. To find out what went into the making of Final Destination 3, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by James Wong, who also wrote the screenplay with Glen Morgan, Final Destination 3 has the following synopsis: Six years after a group of high school students first cheated death, another teen has a premonition that she and her friends will be involved in a horrifying roller-coaster accident. When the vision proves true, the student and her fellow survivors must deal with the repercussions of cheating the Grim Reaper.

The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead,...

2021 Emmy awards nominations ballot: See all 41 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘As Luck Would Have It’ to ‘Wendy Williams: The Movie’
Image
The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 41 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 13; last year only 28 TV movies were submitted.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

The Exorcism Of Molly Hartley Set Visit Report
The Millennium Centre towers over us with aged beauty, pillars stretching upwards to meet carved stone and the blue sky above. It’s almost as impressive and staggering an entrance as the doorway to Dracula’s isolated domain in a Hammer film. But this building is not sequestered to some faraway precipice, it’s instead comfortably nestled within the establishments on Winnipeg’s Main Street. But the locals and tourists strolling down the sidewalk would likely never guess that a satanic ritual of human sacrifice is about to take place in the basement. Looks can be deceiving, you know.

Fearing no sharp-toothed denizens of the dead within this structure, we ascend the short stairway and enter the bronze doors of the 104-year-old construction, taking one more moment to gaze up at the gorgeous gray façade. Ambling past a marble World War One memorial wall in the entryway, we walk into...

'Exorcism of Molly Hartley' Set Visit with Devon Sawa and Sarah Lind
Sarah Lind
Horror fans prepare to be spooked this weekend. Last July, 20th Century Fox invited Movieweb to the set of The Exorcism of Molly Hartley. It is a sequel to 2008's The Haunting of Molly Hartley. Shooting took place in the great northern bastion of filmmaking - Canada, but not Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver. The Exorcism of Molly Hartley shot for twenty days in Winnipeg. The film is slated for a video on demand and DVD release. This was my first set visit for a non-theatrical release. I really didn't know what to expect in Winnipeg or on the set. It was a memorable trip. The level of warmth, interaction, and accessibility was a pleasant surprise.

Canada is a vast country with hundreds of miles of wilderness. This is clearly observed when flying into Winnipeg. This was my first trip here. The city pops up out of nowhere on the horizon.

Hey, Flash Gordon Fans, There’s a New Flash Gordon Movie in the Works
I don’t know anything about Flash Gordon. I believe there was a cheesy movie in 1980 starring some football player … or something. Above is a pic from that, uh, classic. Man, that looks like a fun movie. (If you’re 5 years old, anyway.) I do remember that the Syfy Channel had a Flash Gordon TV show not all that long ago. The show itself was pretty forgettable, but man, Gina Holden was ridiculously hot in it. She’s, uh, the one in purple in the banner pic below. I’m assuming the All-American blond was Flash Gordon. It looks like Twentieth Century Fox and producer John Davis plan on bringing the broad-shouldered savior of the universe back to the big screen. They’ve set writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to pen the script, with the duo working from a treatment by “Bourne Identity” writer George Nolfi. Because obviously when you think “Flash Gordon,...

Avalanche Sharks, Dracano, Forever 16, and Sinkhole Prepare to Take You on an Odyssey
Distribution company Odyssey Media looks to be getting in on the b-movie market in a big way with four Syfy-ish flicks that showcase snow sharks, volcanic dragons, crimefighting teen vampires, and Battle Royale at the bottom of a sinkhole.

Avalanche Sharks – After an horrific avalanche, the staff members at Twin Pines Ski Resort start to receive reports of missing people and creatures that move beneath the snow. As the body count piles up, the management tries to cover up the situation, which leads to disaster on their busiest day of the year: Bikini Snow Day.

This sequel to last year’s Sand Sharks was also supposed to star Brooke Hogan, but she had to back out due to a scheduling conflict. Instead Kate Nauta, Erika Jordan, and Emily Addison will have to serve as attractive snow shark bait in this frozen nature gone amok flick from Scott Wheeler, director of...

TV Trailer for Syfy’s Remake of The Philadelphia Experiment
Apparently the Philadelphia Experiment was “based on actual events”. Yeah, that’s the ticket. I’m sure the military tried something wacky like this. They’re known for that. But did it actually result in time travel? Uh, that’s probably a bit of a stretch. In any case, check out the trailer for the Syfy Channel’s remake of 1984′s “The Philadelphia Experiment”. A secret government research project tries reviving the World War II “Philadelphia Experiment,” an attempt to create a cloaking device to make warships invisible. When the experiment succeeds, it brings back the original ship (the Eldridge) that disappeared during the first test in 1943. Starring Malcolm McDowell, Nicholas Lea, Syfy Channel regular Gina Holden, and Michael Pare, the star of the 1984 original. Coming to Syfy July 28, 2012.

Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island (2012)
Directed by Mark Sheppard

Written by Cameron Larson, (loosely) based on the book by Jules Verne

Featuring Gina Holden, Lochlyn Munro, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Susie Abromeit, Mark Sheppard, J. D. Evermore, Edrick Browne, Caleb Michaelson and William Morgan Sheppard

One might suspect the Syfy premiere of Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island last February was another “mockbuster” from The Asylum, timed to coincide with the theatrical release of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. But blame this one on the Syfy channel, as The Asylum wasn’t involved with this 2010 production. And that’s unfortunate, as this movie lacks any sense of fun or campy humor.

Most genre fans know how the film starts out. During The Civil War, as a group of Union prisoners, along with a reporter and a Confederate deserter, escape from their captors in a hot air balloon. A Confederate soldier, attempting to stop them, is pulled...

TV Review: Fringe 4.16, ‘Nothing as it Seems’
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Now I don’t know if you believe in omens, I don’t even know if I believe them myself, but if ever there was a bad omen for the continued future of Fringe, then have a listen to this strange statistic:

Last week, Episode 15 reached an all-time ratings low for the series, with only 2.8 million Us viewers. Now you could blame this on the opening weekend of the Hunger Games, but we all know Fringe has been sliding slowly down the ratings chart since it was moved to the Friday night ‘death slot’. I don’t have the figures yet, but I suspect last night’s episode offered little improvement. As you’re aware if you’ve seen the episode, it was a re-hash of sorts of an old episode from Season 1. An identical case from Peter’s (Joshua Jackson) timeline re-emerges and takes on...

Gina Holden Talks Syfy’s Jules Verne’S Mysterious Island and Fringe
The Syfy original movie Mysterious Island, adapted from Jules Verne’s 1874 novel, follows five northern POWs from the American Civil War, who make the decision to escape by hijacking a hot air balloon. When they wake to find themselves marooned on a desert island, inhabited by a cast of survivors who have been lost in space and time, they are faced with defending themselves against vicious pirates, terrifying creatures and an active volcano that’s ready to blow, and they must find a way to survive and escape the island before it claims them forever. During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, actress Gina Holden talked about being offered this role and how much she enjoyed playing Jules Fogg (one of two sisters, from modern times, who become stranded on the island while flying over the Bermuda Triangle), how much she loves doing stunts and dealing with special effects, what...

Mark Sheppard: Well, yes, I’ve been doing a lot of voiceovers for BBC America, it’s so much fun to introduce some of the shows I’m actually in. This is so much fun. But what am I going to do on Doctor Who, I can’t tell you that. I mean I’d lie. I’d have to lie about everything,...

DVD Review: Sand Sharks
Sand Sharks

Stars: Corin Nemec, Gina Holden, Julie Berman, Brooke Hogan, Nick Hogan, Vanessa Lee Evigan | Written by Cameron Larson | Directed by Mark Atkins

When you get a movie to review called Sand Sharks you can already guess what is coming. This is going to be one of those crazy shark films that use dodgy CGI and bad acting but just don’t seem to care. They don’t make these films to be good, if anything they ham it up to insane levels and just go with it. You’ll either groan or just go with it and love it. I’m one of those people that usually groan but I gave Sand Sharks a chance.

The stories for these movies are pretty barebones at best but I’d say this one actually tried to some extent, being that it stole the Jaws idea and runs with it with...

Sand Sharks (2011) Movie Review
The search for the bottom of the creature feature barrel continues with “Sand Sharks”, a film which explores the long pondered philosophical question as to what would happen if sharks could in fact swim through sand. Boldly tackling this controversial issue are director Mark Atkins (also responsible for the charming “Battle of Los Angeles”) and writers Cameron Larson (“Mysterious Island”, “Alligator X”) and Joe Benkis (“Shadow People”), with an intriguing cast of television stars and vaguely familiar genre faces that includes Corin Nemec (“Supernatural”), Brooke Hogan (“Brooke Knows Best”), Gina Holden (“Saw 3D”), Julie Berman (“General Hospital”), Nick Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”) and Vanessa Lee Evigan (“Journey To The Centre Of The Earth”). For the brave or curious, “Sand Sharks” hits region 2 DVD in January through Chelsea Films. The plot, such as it is, proudly follows the time honoured “Jaws” formula pretty much to the letter, kicking off with a...

Casting notes: Zoe Saldana in Dominion, Malcolm McDowell in The Philadelphia Experiment
Zoe Saldana is to produce and star in a new supernatural thriller called Dominion.

The Paramount project, scripted by Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings, centres on a woman who is half human and half angel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No further details have been disclosed.

The Avatar and Star Trek actress will next be seen on screen as an assassin avenging her parents' deaths in action movie Colombiana, which opens in the UK on September 9.

In other casting news, Malcolm McDowell has signed on to Syfy's new TV movie The Philadelphia Experiment, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The original story, based on allegedly real events, is about a naval military test in 1943 that used massive electromagnetic fields to make the destroyer USS Eldridge invisible. When repeated later that year, the procedure supposedly caused the ship to teleport 200 miles and travel back in time, with several crew members suffering bizarre side-effects.

A Bikini Bound Brooke Hogan in this First Graphic for Sand Sharks
Is that a scantily clad Brooke Hogan in this first poster for Sand Sharks? The answer is probably yes, as Sand Sharks takes a page out of Piranha 3D's playbook. This graphic looks eerily similar to this earlier film and how sharks travel through sand is up to horror fans' imaginations. Take a peek at this early tease, with American World Pictures set to sell this creature feature domestically and abroad.

The synopsis for Sand Sharks:

"An underwater earthquake cracks open a crater deep beneath the ocean’s surface unleashing a prehistoric predator. On the sleepy island of White Sands, local teens drink and party beside a beach bonfire. One of them wanders off after a pretty girl and disappears, leaving only a severed hand behind. It appears it’s been bitten and ripped off by a vicious animal. This looks like a shark bite, but it’s...
