The upcoming dystopian thriller is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, though the author published it under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Though it was not released until 1979, The Long Walk was actually the first novel King ever wrote.

Stephen King is a master wordsmith, with a natural knack for creating worlds and universes filled with supernatural entities and sinister characters. But — at the heart of his stories — King’s primary focus is humanity as a whole, for better and for worse. There’s a deep appreciation for cinematic adaptations like It and Pet Sematary, but works about the human experience — such as Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck— are praise-worthy as well. Over the next few days, Peacock subscribers are going to want to run to the streamer before time runs out on one of these heart-felt adaptations ahead of The Shawshank Redemption’s departure from the...

The adventures of Daniel Larusso continues after the conclusion of Netflix’s Cobra Kai. The hit show became a treasure trove of easter eggs from the original John G. Avildsen Karate Kid trilogy. Cobra Kai would not only bring back major supporting characters like Chozen Toguchi, Terry Silver and “Karate’s Bad Boy” Mike Barnes, but the writers cut even deeper, with a character like the little Okinawan girl that Daniel saved in the Typhoon in Part II, and more impressively, took a throwaway line from Part III about an off-screen character — Elizabeth Anne Rooney — and actually gave her a scene in an episode. Sony Pictures recently released Karate Kid: Legends,...

From the highly anticipated adaptation of master storyteller Stephen King's first-written novel, and Francis Lawrence, the visionary director of The Hunger Games franchise films, comes The Long Walk, an intense, chilling, and emotional thriller that challenges audiences to confront a haunting question: how far could you go?
The first social media reactions just hit X, and they're all overwhelmingly positive. We know this is often the case with the critics who weigh in on X after early screenings, but taking these at face value, it seems Lawrence has done the near-impossible: he's delivered a sublime adaptation of King's work.
The prolific writer has authored a long list of classic books. However, outside of a few exceptions, most have been poorly handled during the transition from page to screen.

The Long Walk is set to be released in theaters next month, and it's one of Stephen King's darker works, meaning audiences can expect a bleak film adaptation that also serves as a biting social commentary. The movie centers around a group of young men who enter a deadly contest where they must walk at a pace of at least four miles per hour, and if they fall below that pace, they are killed. Only one contestant can survive, and the winner gets a prize of their choosing. Despite its dystopian premise, one star of the movie finds it relevant today, and believes that it will always be relevant for one key reason.

The Long Walk director Francis Lawrence has explained the importance of showing how brutal and violent the Stephen King story is. The filmmaker is no stranger to adapting this type of dystopian survival stories, after previously directing most of the movies in The Hunger Games franchise.
During a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Lawrence addressed how difficult it was to adapt King’s The Long Walk novel due to its violent themes. In order to stay true to the original source material, they made sure that the movie would be rated R, teasing the adaptation’s intense sequences. "I wasn’t going to buckle on that. I knew we were making a tough one. It doesn’t deserve to be PG-13; it deserves to be R," he shared. "Stephen also said it had to be an R. To be truthful to the book, it has to be violent, intense, sad.

There’s a vast world of horror beyond movies out there, especially in the literary space. So much so that novels frequently inspire new horror adaptations, whether brand new publications or enduring horror lit classics.
In a year that’s already delivered an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey and Adam Cesare‘s YA slasher novel Clown in a Cornfield, there’s still plenty more on the way.
Here are seven upcoming adaptations of horror novels that we can’t wait to check out.
The Long Walk – September 12
The first Stephen King adaptation arriving in the back half of 2025 is a doozy based on King’s 1979 novel of the same name. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) directs from a script by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). The R-rated film centers on a grim annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.

Francis Lawrence explains why his survival thriller and Stephen King adaptation, The Long Walk, is R-rated. The upcoming dystopian horror movie from The Hunger Games director revolves around an annual deadly contest where teens must maintain a minimum walking speed of three miles per hour to avoid being shot.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Lawrence clarified why The Long Walk needed to be rated R. The filmmaker stressed that he wasn't going to hold back from the intensity and violence to capture the degradation in the book. A decision supported by King, Lawrence shared that he wanted to "be truthful" with the source material, warning potential viewers that the movie would be "a tough watch."
Read Lawrence's full comments below:
You need to make sure that you really feel the miles and the time. That you feel the degradation emotionally, psychologically, physically. That you feel the weather changes. I wasn't going to buckle on that.

The Long Walk is one of Stephen King‘s most harrowing books, and the upcoming film adaptation doesn’t seem to be shying away from the intensity with its “R” rating from the MPA.
The Long Walk is rated “R” for “strong bloody violence, grisly images, suicide, pervasive language, and sexual references.”
Based on King’s 1979 dystopian novel of the same name, the film arrives in theaters on September 12 from Lionsgate.
The story follows Raymond Garraty, a 16-year old who takes part in an annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.
Francis Lawrence directs from a script by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling).

Darren Aronofsky’s crime caper Caught Stealing is set to reach theatres on August 29th, with Francis Lawrence’s intense Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk following on September 12th and Scott Derrickson’s sequel to his Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (a sequel simply titled Black Phone 2) dropping on October 17th – and today, we have learned that the Motion Picture Association ratings board has given all three of these movies R ratings!
Directed by Aronofsky from a screenplay by Charlie Huston, who is also the author of the book that the movie is based on, Caught Stealing has the following synopsis: Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant.

Stephen King fans have already had a wild year thanks to the arrival of not just one but two masterfully done adaptations, courtesy of Oz Perkins’ The Monkey and Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck. But the year of the King isn’t quite done yet, as The Hunger Games filmmaker, Francis Lawrence, will soon unveil his cinematic makeover of the legendary author’s dystopian thriller, The Long Walk. Today, as part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re thrilled to share a bit more information about the production courtesy of not only an email chat with its helmer, Lawrence, but also with its scribe, Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). Together, the pair paint a clear — albeit dark — image of how the project came together and what audiences can expect to walk into when it trots onto screens on September 12.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence last played the fan-favorite characters Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen, respectively, in 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 2. Seriously, where does the time go? Anyway, since then, The Hunger Games movie franchise has only expanded, spawning two prequels: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), which centers on a young President Snow before he rose to power, and now, Sunrise of the Reaping, which will follow a 16-year-old Haymitch as he prepares to fight in the second Quarter Quell. With a star-studded cast confirmed for Sunrise of the Reaping, which is set to hit theaters in November 2026, rumors of a certain Hunger Games alum returning to make a surprise cameo in the upcoming sequel have been circulating online for quite a while now. But could there be some truth to these rumors?...

When The Hunger Games franchise released its final entry, Mockingjay – Part 2, in 2015, it was difficult to see how the dystopian adventure series could continue after the story wrapped. However, a decade later, The Hunger Games keeps thriving.
With a prequel film, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, already out, and another prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, on the way, fans of the franchise had a lot to look forward to. But the feature films aren't the only new additions to the franchise, as The Hunger Games is officially becoming a stage play. In a new announcement on Instagram, The Hunger Games officially cast the new Katniss Everdeen: Mia Carragher for the upcoming play in London.

‘It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before’: Mark Hamill teases ‘sadistic’ villain in The Long Walk
Mark Hamill has said his role as the Major in The Long Walk is “unlike anything [he’s] ever done before”.The 73-year-old actor stars as the antagonist in the upcoming movie adaptation of Stephen King’s 1979 horror novel of the same name, and Hamill has now reflected on his “sadistic” character.During an interview with Discussing Film, the Star Wars actor said: “Well, he’s amoral. I mean, for you to be able to do what he does … he’s got to be some kind of sociopath.“There’s no sort of backstory for him, but you know he’s a really troubled person. And sadistic and … just all those terrible things.”Hamill added The Long Walk was completely different to his other recent projects, like the Tom Hiddleston-starring fantasy film The Life of Chuck and the upcoming animated flick The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. He continued: “It’s...

Mark Hamill rose to fame with his performance as the heroic Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but his newest role takes the actor to the other end of the spectrum. He plays the villain in The Long Walk, a new dystopian horror film based on a Stephen King story that's coming to theaters on Sept. 12.
Per DiscussingFilm, Hamill was present at San Diego Comic-Con to help promote the film. He spoke about the dark nature of his "sadistic character," referred to in the story as the Major. While Hamill has voiced the Joker for many DC projects, he still feels like playing the Major was very dark in its own way, and that even attracted the actor to the role in the first place.
Mark Hamill tells us about playing potentially the most villainous character of his career in ‘The Long WALK’:“He’s sadistic and all those terrible things.

Mike Flanagan has reshaped Stephen King adaptations over the past decade withGerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep — and The Life of Chuck may be his most profound achievement yet. The film is now landing on digital platforms starting July 29.
It’s a genre-bending drama that isn't your typical King horror tale. Instead, it’s a deeply human story about love, loss, memory, and what it takes to live a meaningful life. It's meditative, surreal, and emotionally shattering in all the right ways. Lionsgate’s The Long Walk marched into Hall H with a mission: to make a tough subject matter too enticing to resist.
The Comic-Con panel not only revealed the newest trailer for the adaptation of the Stephen King novel, that has at its heart a downer of a conceit, but it also showed the first 22 minutes of the movie. The story focuses on an annual contest in which 100 teen boys set out on the titular journey under the watchful eye of hard-driving army commander played by Mark Hamill. The walk ends with just a single survivor.
The assembled crowd of over 6,500 fans was given plenty of warning from the moderators that the some scenes may not be suited for all audiences, on top of the usual warnings of curse words. How intense was the open section? Well, the audience never truly found out because the scene showing the first death was blacked out.

"I don't have much to lose, but I have everything to gain – that's why I'm here." Dang, this looks fantastic! Lionsgate has marched out the second trailer for The Long Walk, an extremely intense new thriller from filmmakers Francis Lawrence & Jt Mollner about a dystopian America. Based on storyteller Stephen King’s first-written novel, and Francis Lawrence, director of The Hunger Games films, comes this grueling story of boys out on a never-ending walk. In the near future, where America has become a police state, one hundred boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life. The brutal game is simple - maintain a steady walking pace of three miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings, and you're out – forever. It's win or die, on this walk. The first 22 minutes of the Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk” debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, following the debut of the new red-band trailer and a panel featuring the cast, including Mark Hamill, David Jonsson (“Alien: Romulus”), Tut Nyuot and Garrett Wareing (“Manifest”).
The film is adapted from King’s 1979 novel (first written when he was 19!), set in an authoritarian America in which 50 young adult men join a televised contest to walk continuously at a pace of at least three miles per hour — or they’ll be killed. Hamill plays a man only known as the Major, the military commander who oversees the Walk and gives the walkers their literal marching orders. In the panel, Hamill said that when director Francis Lawrence approached him about playing the part, it immediately evoked his teenage years in Japan, where he went to school next to a U.S. military base.
