Karate Kid: Legends has already had a legendary performance at the box office, and it just pushed through another major milestone. The sixth movie in franchise history, Legends stars Ben Wang as Li Fong, Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, and Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso. The film serves as a follow-up to both previous movies and the Cobra Kai spin-off TV show, which recently concluded its run on Netflix. While it took 15 years to see a sequel to 2010's The Karate Kid, the movie has been performing admirably at the box office.
According to a report by Variety, the newest film in the franchise is continuing to climb its highest-grossing chart. The sequel is about to pass $35 million at the domestic box office, despite facing stiff competition at the box office. Thanks to a projected $8.7 millionweekend and a 57% drop, it is just $2-3 million away from overtaking The Karate Kid Part III,...

Exclusive: Range Media Partners has signed in-demand comedic talent Edi Patterson for management, Deadline has learned.
Patterson received widespread critical acclaim for her performance as Judy Gemstone in HBO’s hit megachurch comedy The Righteous Gemstones, where she starred alongside fellow Range client Danny McBride, John Goodman, and Adam Devine. In addition to her standout acting role, she served as a writer and consulting producer across all four seasons.
The show marked a reunion for Patterson and McBride, who gave her a breakout role as the dangerously unstable, yet hilarious teacher Jen Abbott in McBride’s previous HBO cult favorite, Vice Principals.
Other previous work for Patterson includes playing the ill-fated maid Fran in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, the holiday action-comedy Violent Night (where she stars opposite David Harbour and John Leguizamo), and seven episodes of The Last O.G. with Tracy Morgan. Sony's decision to give Karate Kid: Legends an unusually early international roll-out may or may not have paid off. It's too early to tell. But one thing's for sure, the movie hasn't quite lived up to expectations. It grossed less than half of what the franchise's previous installment did in its domestic debut, and hasn't yet passed the $25 million mark. However, Karate Kid: Legends hit its first major global box office milestone recently, and, in doing so, overtook another Sony release from earlier this year.
With $24 million domestically and another $26 million from overseas markets, the film's cumulative global haul now stands at a little over $50 million. Karate Kid: Legends now finds itself marginally ahead of David F. Sandberg's recent horror offering Until Dawn. The difference is that Until Dawn cost a reported $15 million to produce, while Karate Kid: Legends' comes with a reported $45 million price tag. It'll have...

"Karate Kid: Legends" really likes to tell its audience that it's about two branches of the same tree. In-universe, this refers to the kung-fu that Jackie Chan's Mr. Han teaches and the karate that Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi used to practice. In reality, however, this can also apply to "Karate Kid: Legends" being a tale of two movies at odds with each other. The first movie is a fantastic reconstruction of the "Karate Kid" formula and tropes, with the titular kid becoming a teacher rather than being a student.
It helps that Ben Wang is a really good lead. He portrays his character, Li Fong, as a relatable and charismatic underdog with a painful past that you can't help but root for. And yet, he is not completely defenseless, as for the first time the protagonist of a "Karate Kid" title already has some martial arts knowledge at the start of the story.

Karate Kid: Legends has passed a significant milestone at the box office less than one week after its release. Legends is the first film in the franchise since 2010's The Karate Kid. After previously appearing in the 2010 film, Jackie Chan returns in Karate Kid: Legends alongside Ralph Macchio, who led the series' first three movies. Together, they train Ben Wang's Li Fong, a teenager who moves from Beijing to New York and enters a karate tournament. Reviews for Karate Kid: Legends have been somewhat mixed, but fans have loved watching Chan and Macchio together.
According to The Numbers, Karate Kid: Legends has officially grossed $50 million at the box office. Since its release on May 30, 2025, the newest film in the long-running franchise has made just over $24 million at the domestic box office, and $26 million in international markets. It has been 15 years since the release of "The Karate Kid," which was originally a loose remake of the 1984 film of the same name. While the original film starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita as the student and the teacher, respectively, the 2010 film starred Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in the same dynamic. At the time of its release, the 2010 film was nothing more than a modern adaptation of the 1984 coming-of-age classic, borrowing the title while changing the martial arts specialty to Kung Fu and relocating the setting to Beijing, China.
However, while the 2010 "Karate Kid" film remained standalone from the original four entries in the franchise for more than a decade, it was officially incorporated into the canon of the established franchise, with the latest entry, "Karate Kid: Legends." In the new film, we see the return of Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), as well as Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio...

Jackie Chan Dislocated His Shoulder (& Popped It Back In) During One Karate Kid: Legends Fight Scene
Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle reveals that Jackie Chan dislocated his shoulder during a fight sequence, only to then pop it back in himself. Serving as the sixth movie in the Karate Kid franchise, the martial arts film chronicles the journey of kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang), who becomes a student of Mr. Han (Chan) and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) after finding himself on a collision course with a local karate champion. Chan's role in the Karate Kid: Legends cast marks his second outing as Mr. Han after 2010's The Karate Kid.
During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Entwistle recalls filming the Mr. Han kitchen fight in Karate Kid: Legends, revealing that the action in the sequence caused Chan to dislocate his shoulder. The 71-year-old actor didn't miss a beat, however, popping his shoulder back into place and promptly getting back to filming. Check out Entwistle's recollection...

Jackie Chan’s Karate Kid: Legends has finally been released in theaters and sees two worlds colliding. Ralph Macchio’s Daniel Larusso was last seen in the finale of Cobra Kai and returns in the latest film. The Karate Kid franchise has had a resurgence since the Netflix series debuted, and it was the perfect time for the movie to be released.
However, despite the presence of both Macchio and Jackie Chan, and the franchise’s resurgence, the latest film failed to rake in huge numbers at the box office. It faced stiff competition from holdovers like Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which did not slow down after their release weeks.

It's officially time to put the "Karate Kid" franchise to bed, perhaps permanently. Sony Pictures had hoped to cash in on the '80s brand's surprising resurgence in popularity thanks in no small part to Netflix's "Cobra Kai." Unfortunately, the same audience that made that show a huge, unexpected hit didn't turn out to watch "Karate Kid: Legends" in theaters over the weekend.
Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, "Legends" opened to an estimated $21 million domestically over the weekend, which was good enough for third place on the charts. However, it came in well behind Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch," which continued its massive box office run with another $63 million after its record-setting Memorial Day debut. On that same note, "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning" held well enough to retain the number two spot with $27.3 million.
Overseas, the latest entry in the "Karate Kid" franchise pulled in an estimated $26 million for a $47 million global debut.

Karate Kid: Legends has finally made its US theatrical debut following several weeks in international theaters. After early responses to the movie saw viewers and critics divided, the addition of US scores on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes has helped elevate the legacy film to huge new heights. Actor Michael Cera has appeared in a number of films throughout his career, including Superbad, Juno, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. Cera’s breakout role came in 2003 when he began playing the son of Jason Bateman’s Michael Bluth, George-Michael Bluth, on the critically acclaimed hit series Arrested Development. However, it seems as though iconic actor and martial artist Jackie Chan hasn’t seen much of Cera’s work.
Cera, who is starring in the latest film by Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme, was promoting the movie in London recently and, per NME, had an interesting albeit awkward encounter with Chan. Karate Kid: Legends simply couldn’t sweep the legs out from under either Lilo & Stitch or Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning over the weekend. The long-awaited team-up between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) underperformed at the box office during its debut en route to a disappointing third-place finish with an estimated $21 million domestically against a production budget of $45 million. Fortunately, the film performed a bit better overseas ($26 million), which brought Legends’ worldwide total to $47 million.
Boxoffice Pro's long-range forecast for Legends dropped back on May 9, and it seemed that the sixth film in The Karate Kid franchise was headed for a $35 million to $45 million opening frame, which would have easily surpassed The Final Reckoning as the No. 2 movie over the weekend. However, despite an "A-" CinemaScore from audiences grading the new installment right out of theaters, Legends still couldn’t attract enough fans to cinemas. The...

Karate Kid: Legends Hits Important Global Box Office Milestone, Showing Promise Despite 59% Rt Score
Karate Kid: Legends has passed a majorly important box office milestone. The new movie, which is the sixth feature-length installment in the franchise, sees original protagonist Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) returning to team up with the 2010 reboot's mentor Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) to train new student Li Fong (Ben Wang), who recently moved to New York City from Beijing. Karate Kid: Legends reviews have been middling, earning it a 59% Rotten Tomatoes score that marks it as the third best-reviewed of the six movies.
Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, Karate Kid: Legends is projected to close out its domestic opening weekend by hitting a cumulative worldwide box office gross of $47 million, having opened previously in some international territories. This makes it the 23rd movie of 2025 to pass the $45 million milestone. This article contains spoilers for "Karate Kid: Legends."
In 1984, John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid" was one of the best family movies around, and for the past 40 years, nothing has been able to keep it down. The series of films revolving around teenagers overcoming the obstacles in their lives through martial arts has somehow managed to evade obscurity by switching up the formula. Even the 2010 reboot starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith ended up being a pretty good movie in its own right. But let's be real. The only reason "The Karate Kid" franchise is still as prominent as it is today is because of "Cobra Kai."

It’s probably safe to assume Jackie Chan hasn’t seen Superbad, Juno, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World or Barbie — basically all of Michael Cera’s most iconic roles.
The Barbie actor recently told NME that Chan had no idea who he was when they met for the first time after ending up at the same press stop, BBC Radio 2, while promoting their respective movies, The Phoenician Scheme and Karate Kid: Legends.
“When I met him though, he was like, ‘Who is this person, what’s going on?'” Cera recalled of their interaction. “We took a picture but I think he thought I was a competition winner. He was like, ‘Ok let’s do a picture real quick. Come on.’ Not rudely. But I felt like I was invading his little personal time with his team before he goes on the radio.”
However, he didn’t take it personally.

Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitchremake continues to dominate the box office. Per Deadline, the movie, starring Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Chris Sanders as Stitch, added $63 million in its second weekend in theaters. Thus far, Lilo & Stitch has earned $234.1 million domestically and more than $469 million worldwide.
On the other hand, the latest installment in the Karate Kid franchise, Karate Kid: Legends, is poised to earn $21 million in its debut weekend, per Sony, but other outlets don’t see it going past the $20 million mark. Top markets include Mexico with $45.9 million, the United Kingdom with $34.5 million, France with $23.1 million and Brazil with $21.6 million.
In other box office milestones, Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and the Warner Bros. R-rated vampire thriller “Sinners” each surpassed the $350 million benchmark.

After debuting in select overseas markets a few weeks ago, Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends opened domestically this week, in the wake of a massive Memorial Day weekend. It took the third spot on the domestic charts, behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake and Paramount’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. While its performance didn’t exactly set the cash registers ringing, the movie has managed to recover its modest reported budgetalready. It remains to be seen if audiences around the globe view the film as worthy of a trip to the theaters, or if they’ve become accustomed to watching sequels to 80s franchises, like Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, at home.
With around $21 million domestically and another $26 million from overseas markets, Karate Kid: Legends’ cumulative global haul stands at $47 million. The movie was produced on a reported budget of $45 million, and unites stars from the original series,...

Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends found itself in an unenviable position this week, as it debuted domestically in the wake of the biggest Memorial Day box office in recorded history. It wasn’t a complete washout, however, as it delivered a steady performance in the tailwind of two massive holdover hits, taking the third spot on the domestic charts in its debut weekend. Karate Kid: Legendsgrossed an estimated $21 million in its first three days of release, which is less than half of what the franchise’s previous installment, The Karate Kid, generated in its opening weekend back in 2010.
Starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, that film concluded its global run with over $350 million. Chan returns for Legends, which also brings back the original series’ star, Ralph Macchio, and introduces newcomer Ben Wang to the long-running franchise. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, the movie opened to mixed reviews, but earned a solid response from audiences.

As theKarate Kid franchise amps up the nostalgia with Karate Kid: Legends, the latest installment currently playing in theaters, fans of the Miyagi-verse should start saving for what will surely be an epic release. The Karate Kid III (1989)

While its fate isn’t yet sealed, Karate Kid: Legends opened behind expectations at the domestic box office, despite teaming original star Ralph Macchio and beloved action legend Jackie Chan, who starred in the 2010 redux.
Sony is estimating a third-place North American opening of $21 million from 3,809 theaters for the male-fueled film (rival studios show it coming in closer to $20 million). Heading into the weekend, tracking had the pic debuting to $25 million; three weeks ago, that number was a far more promising $35 million. Overseas, where it began rolling out early, Legends took in another $12 million for an early foreign tally of $26 million and $47 million globally (it has only opened in 40 percent of the marketplace).
Regardless of a soft opening, Sony remains confident that the PG-13 film will sport strong chops, thanks to an A- CinemaScore and solid exits. And its net production budget was a modest $45 million before marketing.

Box Office: ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Rules Again With $63 Million, ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Opens to $21 Million
“Karate Kid: Legends” slashed its way to $21 million at the domestic box office, a decent start, although one that’s slightly behind expectations.
Heading into the weekend, Sony’s PG-13 action sequel was aiming for $25 million from 3,809 North American venues. Though “Legends” has garnered positive reactions from audiences (the film earned an “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls compared to the 59% Rotten Tomatoes average from critics), attendance didn’t break out beyond “Karate Kid” fans. The movie carries a relatively modest $45 million production budget.
“Karate Kid: Legends” is the franchise’s first new theatrical installment in 15 years, since 2010’s reboot with Jackie Chan. That film opened to $55 million (not adjusted for inflation) and ultimately earned $359 million globally. This new version, directed by Jonathan Entwistle, unites Chan with Ralph Macchio, who learned the art of “wax on, wax off” in the 1984 original “Karate Kid.” The long-running martial arts series has enjoyed...

Ralph Macchio isn't closing the dojo just yet as he teases a potential Cobra Kai following Karate Kid: Legends. Macchio, who first stepped into the iconic role in 1984, recently returned to the big screen alongside Jackie Chan for the new Karate Kid: Legends movie. The film follows Li Fong (Ben Wang), a Chinese teenager who moves with his mother to New York from Beijing a year after his older brother's death. With the Karate Kid franchise continuing its legacy through Netflix's Cobra Kai and the Legends movie, Ralph Macchio has addressed what the future may hold for Daniel Larusso.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Macchio was asked if this would be his final time playing Daniel. The actor reflected on the longevity of his character while expressing interest in a possible Cobra Kai movie in the future now that the show has ended. Macchio revealed he'd like...

Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle explains why the Miyagi-Do dojo house looks different. The latest entry in The Karate Kid franchise follows Li Fong (Ben Wang), a kung fu prodigy who enters the Five Boroughs Tournament, having been trained by Mr. Han and Daniel Larusso. Along with Wang, the cast of Karate Kid: Legends includes Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Sadie Stanley, and Joshua Jackson. Taking place three years after Cobra Kai, Karate Kid: Legends revisits the Miyagi-Do dojo house, but it bears little resemblance to the Netflix show's depiction.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Entwistle revealed that Karate Kid: Legends constructed Miyagi-Do dojo at a filming location in Montreal. Unlike the house in Cobra Kai, which he explained was a set, Entwistle and the crew made Miyagi-Do dojo to resemble the setting of previous movies. The director added that, unfortunately, the real home no longer stands.

If you’re still reeling from Cobra Kai’s sixth and final season and wondering what’s next in the Miyagi-verse, Karate Kid: Legends tries to answer that. Well, sort of. While it introduces a new generation with Li (Ben Wang) and brings back Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), what really got fans talking was that cameo from Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). The Cobra Kai Goat shows up in the final moments of Karate Kid: Legends. Unfortunately, not with a flying kick or an Eagle Fang Karate strike, but with a slice of New York pizza and a new business idea. When "Karate Kid: Legends" was first announced, the prospect of crossing over 1984's "The Karate Kid" with 2010's "The Karate Kid" seemed heavily involved. Leaving aside the popular six-season run of the series that acts as a sequel to the original four films, "Cobra Kai," the idea felt like it could easily run into some problems, due to the 2010 film being developed and shot as a remake rather than a straight sequel or legacy sequel. Still, there existed some wiggle room: none of the characters shared the same names as their 1984 counterparts, and although the structure and situations involved were highly similar, they weren't so exact as to feel like they could only occur once. In essence, "Legends" would simply have to concede that, in the "Karate Kid" universe, it's a fairly common occurrence for single mothers to pack up their lives and their children and move across the country...

The Karate Kid franchise is still ongoing. After the end of the Netflix series Cobra Kai, the story continues with Karate Kid: Legends.
The film brings back Ralph Macchio as the legendary Daniel Larusso and Jackie Chan from the previous entry, 2010's The Karate Kid soft reboot, with a new leading character: Ben Wang as Li Fong. The movie, which marks the sixth entry in the franchise, debuted with poor reviews that didn't come anywhere close to the recent success Cobra Kai has experienced. However, the audience doesn't agree with the critics, as Karate Kid: Legends debuted with the best audience score in the film series on Rotten Tomatoes: 88%.
Karate Kid: Legends' early reviews weren't exciting. The film debuted with a "rotten" score of 55% from the critics. It has since improved slightly to 57% as more reviews came in, but it still maintains a "rotten" badge. The audience score tells a different story.

Jackie Chan is back. Not that he ever went away, but Chan returns as Han in “Karate Kid: Legends,” the latest installment in the film franchise.
This time around, he’s in China mentoring his young nephew, Li (Ben Wang). When Li is forced to move to New York City, he finds himself tussling with a bully at school, and winds up in the Five Boroughs Tournament. Han comes along to train Li in martial arts, while Danny Larusso (Ralph Macchio), the original Karate Kid, arrives from California to teach Li karate.

It isn't unusual for audiences and critics to be out-of-sync. Just some months ago, the Amazon MGM movie Red One — that's the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans holiday adventure – scored a terrible 30% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but an exceptional 90% audience score on the same platform. Something similar is unfolding this week, with Sony's Karate Kid: Legends having opened to mediocre reviews but a warm embrace from the crowds that checked it out on its first day of release. The movie is a soft-reboot of the long-running franchise; it brings back characters from not only the original series, but also the television spin-off and the last reboot.
It's been 15 years since that movie debuted to similarly mixed reviews, but it grossed over $350 million globally. Starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, the 2010 reboot holds a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score, which is higher than the 58% score that Karate Kid: Legends is currently sitting on.

“Karate Kid: Legends” kicked off with $7.5 million from 3,809 theaters across Friday and preview screenings — but it won’t be enough to wax off “Lilo & Stitch” or “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” from the top of the box office.
Sony’s “Karate Kid” legacy sequel is coming in behind projections for a $25 million debut, now slowing down to $21 million to $23 million. Even if it falls lower, the PG-13 martial arts film cost just $45 million to produce — relatively modest for a summer blockbuster play. “Legends” isn’t breaking out much beyond “Karate Kid” fans, but their nostalgia for the 1984 original and its sequels is sizable. A 2010 film reboot, led by Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, was a theatrical hit, and Netflix’s popular “Cobra Kai” spinoff series concluded its sprawling six-season run just earlier this year.

Karate Kid: Legends
Director: Jonathan Entwistle
Starring: Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen
For a franchise that has survived for thirty years, the latest Karate Kid film is severely underwritten and excessively eager to please. It has the right ingredients to seem like a picture-perfect homage to the sensei-pupil tradition that first erupted on the screen in 1994 when Pat Marito mentored the 23-year-old Ralph Macchio.
It was an instant hit. As a student, I remember how inspiring it was to witness the guru-shishya parampara in the Chinese milieu. It felt like an event.
Macchio is back in this Jonathan Entwistle-directed poor descendant, which features a lot of pizza prattle and martial arts but no swaad or punch. The new discovery, Ben Wang, is amiable enough. Ajay Devgan’s son has dubbed him well in the Hindi version.
Ironically, Wang is at his best when not in a martial arts mode.

This article contains spoilers for "Karate Kid: Legends" and "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning."
In some ways, film is an escape that presents audiences with an opportunity to leave their world behind and find themselves engrossed in another one. It's an immersive experience, after all. Every film rides on its own wavelength. Viewers who are more cinematically attuned may rejoice at being able to recognize a filmmaker working their magic, but on the other side of the coin, noticing the seams coming apart can be detrimental to the whole experience. When the pacing is off, it makes you think about the movie beyond what it's there to do.
A film with great pacing can often hide flaws or extend your suspension of disbelief because the experience, as a whole, doesn't grant you the opportunity to think about them all that much in the moment. Each scene informs the next.
